Louisiana Hayride rolls into Humboldt for the first time

The Louisiana Hayride brought many country singers into the spotlight during the heyday of country music during the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Now thanks to the Louisiana Hayride Show, those singers are coming to Humboldt for the first time on June 10 at the Humboldt Uniplex.

Founder and host of the Louisiana Hayride Show, Lori Risling, says they pay tribute to the many singers who got their start on the show like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, and George Jones and others who were influenced by it, like Garth Brooks and Shania Twain.

Seven members of the band will be coming to perform and sing live with some characters being done in full costume while many members of the band pay tribute to the singers with strong performances of their hit music, says Risling.

The songs the band chooses to perform are ones that stir up a lot of memories, says Risling, with people singing along and dancing in their chairs. “We need people to recognize the songs, we don’t want to do ones that people don’t know, even if they’d be well done.�

Over the last couple of years, audiences are not just that older generation who know the songs from when they came out but also are the younger ones who also enjoy those classic country tunes. “We’ve got young people maybe 15-35 age range coming more and more, loving it, recognizing the songs from what their parents or grandparents played,� says Risling.

The main reason that singers like Brooks and Twain are being brought into the show is to give the younger audience members more of what they would recognize and bridge that older to the newer country, she says. “The younger ones are recognizing that and really love the upbeatness of those two characters.�

The band started in the Okanagan and have spent the last eight years touring Western Canada.

Risling says that selection for the band was based on what was needed for the show but the core five members of the band has become much like a family, with the addition of two more members from the Battlefords in the past year and a half. “We just say it was meant to be because that’s how it turned out.�

School boards get it all with Education Act amendments

It comes on the cusp of a $54 million cut to education and many are leery of the changes that came to Bill 63 when it was passed on May 4.

Bill 63 made some crucial amendments and cleaning up to the Education Act. But while school divisions do get to keep their boards the bill also includes changes to school board autonomy.

President of the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation Pat Maze says that communities across Saskatchewan will lose their voice with these amendments.

“This bill consolidates all power in the minister and even takes away anybody’s right to legally change a decision of the minister in the courts. It just shuts down all options.”

Ultimately, Bill 63 significantly changes the way education partners do business, says Maze.

While previous standings with the bill had these types of powers diversified, Maze says that the amendments

to the Education no longer have that.

The huge impacts of this bill did not stop its quick passing within the legislature, says Maze, with only a month in between the first reading in the legislature and its final passing.

According to Education Minister Don Morgan, there was extensive consultation between the Advisory Panel on Education Governance Renewal and the more than 45 stakeholders groups and the over 3,800 residents who responded with online submissions.

“We heard strong support for maintaining elected trustees and we listened,” said Morgan during the first reading of the bill on April 5. “We also heard a clear need to ensure school divisions are being as efficient and effective as possible with the resources that are available.”

Maze says there was little consultation after the bill was passed and really no time to lobby their concerns.

“It was just sort of here it is and here’s what we’re doing. It’s government using their majority numbers

in the legislature to ram something through virtually uncontested.”

None of the usual consultation with the sector took place, says Maze, which is very concerning.

Maze says the Federation will be looking at legal options to contest some of the amendments around bargaining routes.

With so many amendments passed with just one bill, legislation did become an all or nothing kind of deal.

For Director of Education within Horizon School Division, Kevin Garinger, some amendments in the over 20-year-old bill were in desperate need of attention so the amending itself was not wholly unwarranted. The bill does preserve the rolls of the elected school board trustees and keeps the election local which was in discussion before the bill entered its first reading.

Keeping that in legislation is a positive thing, says Garinger.

“Elected school boards play a critical role in governance work that they do in their school divisions and allowing

the public to have a voice in decisions relating to their children’s education I think is very important and having that voice at a local political level makes great sense. The current amendments do maintain that.”

Walking down the path of more government autonomy is a fine line to walk, says Garinger, with the possibility of better centralized spending and efficiencies but also looking at the impacts on local spending.

When it comes to what the school boards can do surrounding their role within Bill 63, Garinger says we will just have to wait and see what impacts there will be. Ensuring that elected officials having power to make decisions is an important factor in the coming months but there also has to be analysis of the sector as a whole.

“The important work will be in developing that understanding, asking the critical questions around it, and being able to work collaboratively towards solutions to any problems that arise.”

Merchants swept in doubleheader

The Bruno Merchants’ slow start to the season continued last week as they lost both games in a May 23 doubleheader in Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association action.

The Merchants kicked off their doubleheader with

their first game of the season against the defending league champion Saskatoon Poly Plus Sr. Angels.

The Merchants could not keep the Angels off the board and it hurt them as they gave up eight runs en route to an 8-1 loss.

chants returned to the field for the second game of their doubleheader as they took on the Saskatoon Diamondbacks U23.

The Merchants came into the contest with a 0-1 record against the Diamondbacks U23 having lost 14-8 to them the week prior.

This game was much closer and was a low scoring affair with just five runs combined but the Merchants could not pull out the win as they fell 3-2.

The loss dropped the Merchants’ record to 0-4 on the season and leaves them in last place in the four team

NBA’s ‘foregone conclusion’ should be a thriller

Let’s just call the upcoming National Basketball Association final the Foregone Conclusion.

For the third season in a row, it appears to be a certainty that LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers will tangle with the Golden State Warriors, led by Steph Curry (and this year, a co-leader, Kevin Durant).

At the time of writing, neither the Cavs nor Warriors had officially qualified for the NBA Final, but the Warriors held a solid 3-0 lead on San Antonio Spurs in the West, and King James and the Cavaliers were up 2-0 against Boston Celtics after two blowout victories. The Cavs were 10-0 in this year’s playoffs and it would be an upset of gigantic proportions to see them lose four out of the next six against Boston.

(However, it’s not impossible: A LeBron James broken leg? A UFO landing outside Quicken Loans Arena and snapping up King James as he exited the facility? A sudden inability to dribble the ball?)

OK, so on June 1, let’s just assume the Cavaliers and Warriors will tip off the NBA Finals in what is essentially a rubber match stretched out over three seasons. It will be the first time in league history that the same two teams have been finalists three years in a row. In 2015, the Warriors beat Cleveland in six; last year, the Cavaliers roared back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship in a Game 7 thriller. Now, basketball fans will be getting what has been a Foregone Conclusion for the last couple of months: The two best teams, the two teams with the most avid TV following, the two teams with the most polarizing players (James and Curry), the undisputed, no-flukes-

here, best in the business in a best-of-seven battle that could go either way.

Golden State has its two-headed monster in Curry and Durant, with great support from the likes of Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. But the Cavaliers have King James, the best player of his generation, this era’s Michael Jordan, who seems to have the ability to carry a team above and beyond the norm.

His supporting cast is more than merely decent, too: Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and Toronto native Tristan Thompson are no slouches.

It should be a dandy. My pick: Warriors in six. King James will be dethroned.

The Cavaliers and Warriors both did in fact win their respective series in relatively short order.

Family were up from Regina, as well as Verna and Julius Nagy and family, relatives and his sisters from Saskatoon.

Anna Mae Ryann of Vancouver Island phoned and said her pear tree is blooming very nicely. She says hi to all her friends.

Dennis and Leona Credgeur were away to Temple Gardens Spa in Moose Jaw for a few days and celebrated Dennis’ birthday. Ken and I were also at the spa (a gift from

our family). While there we visited Don Farago and he drove us around Moose Jaw. It was nice seeing the countryside.

Dennis and Leona Credgeur were away to Meadow Lake to help their grandson celebrate his ninth birthday.

The Friendship Club met May 2 for a potluck supper and cards. It was a good evening out and anyone is welcome to come. Just bring something for supper and it is only $1 each for a lovely potluck. The men do the dishes.

friends were present to celebrate Armella’s birthday.

Evelyn Shoemaker was a recent visitor at the home of Cheryl and Fred Schaan. Schaan family members came from Young, Saskatoon, Muenster, and Creston, B.C. Recently visiting Westly Farago and Myrna were friends Cordell Anderson of Saskatoon and his mother Debi Anderson. They all enjoyed

chicken wings at the Plunkett Hotel.

Cordell brought his guitar and entertained folks. He was the star attraction that night.

Also there was Robert and Joan Callaghan of Moose Jaw. They were also going to Lanigan to visit their mother Ellen Farago at the Lanigan Lodge.

Plunkett folks welcome any new folks who have moved into town.

Conditions still too volatile for StatsCan numbers

Calvin Daniels The numbers don’t seem to be quite adding up.

Or, if they do, they seem to be running counter to conditions, and earlier expectations.

The numbers in this case are from Statistics Canada, and relate to cropping expectations for Canadian farmers this year.

Overall, the numbers suggest farmers will plant an additional two million acres this season.

Not surprisingly the greatest interest is in canola, and its oilseed competitor soybeans.

The numbers suggest producers will increase canola acres to 22.4 million acres, up almost 10 per cent from last year and a new record high.

Soybeans, a crop unheard of across most of the Canadian Prairies a decade ago is becoming a major crop. The StatsCan numbers show Manitoba soybean acres to 2.2 million acres which is a 34.6 per cent increase from 2016.

In Saskatchewan, where soybeans are an even newer crop, the acreage is expected to triple from 240,000 acres to 730,000.

While the numbers don’t crystal ball the future, given the nitrogen fixing ability of soybeans, and farmers seeking al-

ternatives to canola as an oilseed crop, the acres devoted to soybeans are likely to continue to grow in the years ahead.

Of a greater surprise among the StatsCan numbers are those related to a couple of old standard cereal crops.

Oat acres are anticipated to jump 20.6 per cent to 3.4 million acres. Given the oat milling sector here on the prairies, this will be seen as a positive in terms of supply.

And one-time crop king wheat, is at least expected to hold its acres at 23.2

But the question is where the acres are actually coming from?

We are in a spring where a lot of 2016 crop was still in the field, and that is a pressure on replanting.

There are also significant acres that were wet last fall, and remain so this spring. With the calendar turning to June any amount of moisture could leave at least some of those wet acres idle.

The same moisture issues means a lot of slough acres which might be

cropped in dry years, are not going to be planted in 2017.

While Statistics Canada numbers are never guaranteed, planting is too volatile for that, this year farmers clearly hoped to put in huge acres, perhaps as a buffer to softer price expectations.

But conditions are likely to roadblock the big planting that farmers had planned.

In fact, it would not take a lot of moisture in the next couple of weeks to drop the expected acres significantly.

Have safe fun in the sun this summer

Warm days and bright sun call to all of us to get outdoors and enjoy it while it lasts. Fresh air is always a good thing and the more time we spend in nature the more our bodies will thank us, but we want to make sure we are doing it the right way.

Sun exposure has many positive benefits to our health including creation of vitamin D, positive effects on mood and energy (especially those suffering from SAD), decreased tension and stress, and improved relaxation.

Soaking up the rays in a healthy manner is great for our health.

One of the greatest benefits of sun exposure is our body’s ability to cre-

ate vitamin D from it. Vitamin D is required as a precursor to steroids and hormones, as an integral part of our immune system, to help with energy production and has been shown to be beneficial in preventing chronic disease.

When the sun’s rays hit our skin, it produces a reaction that begins a chain of events in our skin and kidneys that allows us to create the vitamin.

A fair skinned Caucasian individual requires ten minutes of direct exposure to the sun in order to create their daily supply of vitamin D. Those with darker skin will require slightly longer exposure.

Although the sun has multiple benefits for our health, it also comes with some risks.

The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can have damaging effects on our skin. The UV rays are what give our skin the elusive summertime tan or glow that most people seek out, but the more we tan our skin the more at risk we are for damaging effects.

Exposure to the sun can cause freckles, wrinkles, discoloration of the skin, weakening of the collagen and elastic tissue causing sagging and lines, dilation of small blood vessels under the skin, benign tumours and pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions.

Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in North America with numbers continually on the rise. The

UV radiation from the sun causes damage to our skin cells which produce uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells leading to the development of skin cancer. The UV radiation from tanning beds has the same effect on our skin, but in a more concentrated dosage.

We should all be sun safe and take precautions in order to protect our skin from these damaging UV rays.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays is a great barrier method. UVB rays typically are the cause of the red sunburn and damaging effects on our top layer of skin, while UVA rays can penetrate to deeper layers of the skin. Applying sunscreen before sun exposure and reapplying regularly while out in the sun will help keep your skin protected.

While sunscreen is a great barrier method, we also want to be conscious of the type of sunscreen we are applying.

Anything that we apply topically will be absorbed through our skin and into our bodies. A lot of sunscreens (and other personal care products) contain a number of chemicals that can have harmful effects on our body.

These chemicals can affect our hormones or even increase our risk of cancer.

A great resource for finding out the safety of your sunscreen would be the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.

This is a free online resource that lists

the toxicity rating of personal care products and also has lists of the safest sunscreens on the market.

Sunscreen is a great way to protect our skin from sunburns and other damaging effects, but we also want to spend our time in the sun wisely. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion occurs when our body is not able to regulate its temperature properly after long-term exposure to heat.

Make sure to seek shade when you are outdoors for extended periods of time to limit your damaging UV ray exposure and to keep your body from over heated.

Wear a hat and cover up exposed skin. Avoid outdoor activities during peak periods in the sun. Staying hydrated will keep your body cool and keep it functioning optimally to avoid exhaustion. Utilize cooling compresses when you are feeling warm and to help cool down any sunburns you may inadvertently acquire.

With our long winters in Saskatchewan, we all want to enjoy the summer sun while it’s here. Make sure you are protecting your body from harm and enjoying the sun safely.

Dear parents; let your children be bad at stuff

Sitting at an elementary school play, I was shocked to hear someone behind me loudly mutter ‘finally’ as the students came on stage for their final bow.

While there were mic problems, forgotten lines, and jokes that were not all that funny, the students wrote and worked very hard to perform the play.

They learned about teamwork, gained self-confidence, and everyone in the audience could tell they had fun doing it.

No matter what technical problems there were, overall it was a delight to see the work they had done.

‘Tis the season for year end plays and concerts while final sporting events happen throughout the year.

When I was in school, there was very rarely a time when a parent could not make a performance or game.

Since the majority of dads are farmers, many of them made sure the work was done so they could get out of the field in time.

Since I am going to more and more of these events, I understand what my parents went through in the 23 years of having kids in school.

But I still hate hearing this ‘finally’ sentiments.

We should be encouraging students to try these things, no matter how much they may fail at first.

I have fond memories and lifelong friends from spending 7 years making music. I gained so much from every drama production and variety show I was in and there is hardly one of these performances my parents missed.

I may not have picked up my clarinet in 12 years but I gained so much from joining the band and I kept going because I, like lots of the students, were well supported by parents who came to every concert, drove us to practices, helped up fundraise, and chaperoned on field trips.

This does not include the amazing teachers and coaches who stuck with us through the junior level years where there were tonnes of skills we needed to work on.

Some kids may have needed more encouragement than others and I have always heard kids lament over their terrible solos or track results.

Even though I was encouraged by teachers and family, as a person who now writes for a living, I do not think a single piece of elementary and high

school writing survived my ‘everything I have ever written is terrible’ phase.

That does not mean that the encouragement I did receive was pointless.

As someone who now writes for a living, I survived that phase and kept my passion for writing intact.

Taking drawing lessons from Grant McConnell, I discussed with him my own frustrations with selfcriticism.

His response was perfect: you do not start at the end.

Simple words yet the most profound.

Kids will not be perfect at playing an instrument or sport right away but with our help they can get better.

Encourage a child and they will get better. Discourage a child and they will quit on the spot.

How are we going to improve that rate if we do not become more active?

To make matters worse only a small percentage, 17 to be precise, find themselves to be very active.

Activity should be something we strive for.

Some of the blame can fall at the government’s feet as well.

We have a nationally funded organization called ParticipACTION whose goal is to help people of all ages make sitting less of and moving more of a priority.

What exactly are they doing if one third of Saskatchewan is not active?

They need to do more to help make those people more active.

But to be honest sitting here and blaming the government is taking the easy way out.

Physical activity is easy, we should not need to have government organizations telling us how to be active.

Activity is as simple as pushing a lawn mower, or going for a walk or run, or going swimming.

It is time we stand up and make activity more of a priority and for those who do not.

Let us try to help motivate them to make that change.

This is extremely concerning to me.

With obesity rates on the rise we should be looking to be more physically active not less so.

According to an Overweight and Obesity in SK (2013-2014) report filed by the Government of Saskatchewan three in five Saskatchewan residents 18 years and older were overweight or obese based on the Body Mass Index.

Now I will be the first to admit that I do not fully buy into the BMI, as I find their ideas of overweight to be excessive.

According to the BMI I am overweight, and when I tell people that they look at me like they have just seen a ghost.

However, it does provide a great basis for which to start.

The troubling sign is according to BMI Saskatchewan is actually significantly higher than the national average for overweight and obesity.

Yet here we are discovering that almost one third of all residents are not physically active.

The Bruno Bisons enjoyed a steady week as they picked up wins in two of their three games.

The Bisons kicked off their week with a match up against the Selects on May 23 at Stonebridge South in Saskatoon.

It was a close contest between the two teams as they finished the seventh and final inning tied at nine.

In the eighth inning the Bisons could not score a run on Selects pitcher Kody Hartung, who smacked the game winning RBI to give the Selects the 10-9 win.

The Bisons enjoyed a couple of days off before returning to the diamond on May 28 for a Sunday doubleheader.

The opening game of the doubleheader saw the Bisons take on the Pirates at Stonebridge North.

The Bisons got terrific pitching and their defense came up big as they cruised past the Pirates 6-0.

After enjoying a short break the Bisons returned to Stonebridge North for the back half of their doubleheader as they took on the Rhinos.

The game was much closer than the Bisons’ first of the day, but the result was the same as the Bisons swept their doubleheader with a 6-5 win over the Rhinos.

The wins pushed the Bisons’ record to 4-2 on the season and leaves them in a three way tie for first place with the Brewers (3-1) and the Wombats (3-1) in the Saskatoon Men’s Baseball League A Division.

The Bisons return to the diamond for a pair of contests against B Division foes this week as they take on the Expos on May 31 and Northeast on June 3.

Trio of locals selected in WHL draft

For a 14 year old hockey player there is no bigger dream than being drafted to the Western Hockey League and for three local hockey players that dream became a reality.

The WHL held their annual Bantam Draft on May 4 in Calgary and saw four locals taken including Kaden Kohle, Brett Fogg, and Kalen Ukrainetz.

Kaden Kohle The Tri-City Americans drafted Kohle, a 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;2â&#x20AC;? 175lb forward in the first round, 12th overall.

American assistant general manager and head scout Barclay Parneta said it was the Cudworth nativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s size and compete level that was really enticing to the Americans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that lends well to as he gets older and stronger that he will continue to do that and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a trait you can teach. And then obviously his skill.â&#x20AC;?

Parneta noted they first saw Kohle play last year and were really excited about him after his first year of bantam. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He just kept sort of continuing to develop in his second year.â&#x20AC;?

Kohle was dominant in his second season as a bantam player as he finished the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League season with 38 goals and 66 points in 29 games with the Humboldt Bantam AA Broncos, before adding eight goals and 13 points in

Fogg spent this past season playing with the Humboldt Bantam AA Broncos were he put up nine goals and 17 assists in 30 regular season games before adding two goals and five assists in five playoff games.

One of the most impressive parts of Foggâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game is his ability to play the same night after night, says Kazuik. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Each and every time you saw him he played with a good edge.â&#x20AC;?

Looking ahead Kazuik says he expects Fogg will make the jump to the WHL as a 17 or 18 year old and says he projects him to be a good player in the WHL who will be able to play up and down the defensive pairings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you see a guy that can do that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very interesting because sometimes heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a power play guy, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a penalty kill guy.

Ukrainetz spent last season playing with the Humboldt Bantam AA Broncos in the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League where he put up 26 goals and 50 points in 30 regular season games, before adding three goals and five points in five playoff games.

Looking ahead La Forge says he thinks Ukrainetz has the potential to jump into the teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; top six, but says he does not expect him to make the jump to the WHL until he is 17 or 18. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to give himself a chance to get a long look at 16 and then hopefully by 17 heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really to make the step into the Western Hockey League.â&#x20AC;?

In the meantime, just like all young players, Ukrainetz is going to have to get bigger, faster, and stronger if he wants to make the jump to the WHL, says La Forge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We like how well rounded his game is now so we want to keep that going but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just bigger, stronger, faster and making sure that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing all the things right to prepare yourself to play at the next level.â&#x20AC;?

La Forge says he spoke to Ukrainetz on draft night, and says he seems to be ready to go.

Watrous, Lake Lenore, Wynyard finish 3,4,5 at districts

Track and field athletes were busy last week competing in the district championships in Saskatoon on May 23, with 45 schools in attendance.

Watrous High The Watrous Wildcats enjoyed a terrific trip to the district championship as they claimed a third place finish in the team points competition, missing out on first by 281 points.

The Wildcats sent 44 participants to the district championships where they enjoyed a tremendous amount of success claiming six firsts, six seconds, and 11 thirds in individual events.

Thanks to those terrific results the Wildcats picked up a pair of top five finishes in individual points competitions, and five top tens.

Their top finish came in the peewee girls competition where they finished third, before adding a fourth in bantam boys, seventh in peewee girls, and tenth in senior girls and junior boys.

Thanks to their six firsts and six seconds in individual events, the Wildcats qualified for 12 individual events at the provincial championships.

Lake Lenore Finishing just behind the Wildcats in the team points competition was the Lake Lenore Lancers, who missed out on a top three finish by just 51 points.

The Lancers sent 25 athletes to the district championships where they enjoyed a tremendous amount of success.

In the individual points competition the Lancers finished with five top three finishes and nine top tens.

The Lancers picked up a single first place finish in the midget girls event, and added finishes of second in midget boys, and junior girls, third in senior girls, and senior boys, fifth in junior boys, and bantam boys, eighth in senior boys, and ninth in senior girls.

The Lancers’ individual points finishes were boosted by a number of great individual events finishes including nine firsts, 12 seconds, and seven thirds.

Wynyard Comp The Wynyard Bears picked up a fifth place finish in the team points competition missing out on third by just 63 points.

The Bears sent 28 athletes to the district championships with a number enjoying a great deal of success.

In the individual points competitions the Bears picked up a trio of top three finishes and five top fives.

Their best result came in the midget boys competition where they finished first, and added finishes of second in bantam boys, third in bantam girls, and fourth in peewee boys and junior girls.

The Bears picked up a number of individual top three finishes as well claiming nine firsts, nine seconds, and five thirds.

Thanks to their finishes the Bears qualified for eight individual events at the provincial championship.

Middle Lake Despite sending just 16 athletes to the district championships the Middle Lake Avengers enjoyed a terrific result in the team points competition where they finished seventh despite sending no fewer than nine less athletes to the meet.

The Avengers captured a pair of individual points titles in the junior boys, and peewee girls events and added finishes of fourth in senior girls, seventh in senior girls, bantam girls, and bantam boys, and ninth in senior boys.

In addition to their great performances in the individual points races

the Avengers also enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in individual events as they claimed nine firsts, eighth seconds, and seven thirds.

Thanks to their great results the Avengers qualified for 12 individual events at the provincial championships.

LeRoy The LeRoy Lightning enjoyed a quiet district championship as they sent 25 athletes and finished in 15th place, less than 100 points short of eighth.

The Lightning managed to pick up a pair of top ten finishes in individual points competitions as they claimed a first place and a ninth place finish in the bantam girls division.

The Lightning also picked up five first and two third place finishes in individual events.

Despite finishing with five first place finishes the Lightning failed to qualify for a single event at provincials as they finished with five firsts in bantam events, which are not provincial events.

Annaheim Rounding out the individual points winners were the Annaheim Rebels who claimed a first place finish in the senior girls division, and added a third place finish and tenth place finish in the peewee boys division.

The Rebels sent 19 athletes to the district championships where they finished in 11th place in the team points competition, missing out on seventh by fewer than 100 points.

They also put together strong performances in individual events, which saw the Rebels pick up seven first place finishes, three seconds, and three thirds.

Thanks to their strong performances the Rebels qualified for seven events at the provincial championships.

Looking Ahead Athletes now turn their attention to the Provincial Championhips in Saskatoon June 2-3.

Royals win despite errors

It was a busy week for the Marysburg Royals but a very successful one as they picked up wins in all three games.

The week kicked off for the Royals on May 26 as they traveled to Saskatoon to take on the Outlaws.

The game came down to the wire with Luke Strueby driving home the game-winning run in the seventh inning as the Royals emerged with a 7-5 win.

Thomas Lessmeister picked up the win on the mound for the Royals after coming on in relief for starting pitcher Nick Anderson.

The Royals returned to action on May 28 as they welcomed the Hoppers to Marysburg for the teams’ home opener.

The Royals squeaked out a 6-5 win in the opening game as Lessmeister picked up his second straight win pitching five innings in relief of starter Colin Bauml.

Bauml and Lessmeister gave up five runs, all of which were unearned as the Royals committed five errors defensively.

Cam Blair lead the way offensively for the Royals as he pounded a homerun to left centre field, and

finished with four runs batted in.

After a brief break the two teams returned to the field for the back half of the doubleheader, which the Royals won 11-6.

Mathew Strueby got the start for the Royals pitching two solid innings before handing the ball over to Carter Frerichs, who picked up the win pitching three strong.

Eric Bollefer pitched the final two innings for the Royals.

The Royals defense was poor once again as they committed four errors in the win, making nine errors in the doubleheader.

Brett Doepker lead the way offensively for the Royals as he pounded out two home runs, with Luke Strueby adding three hits, and Dustin Emberley, Rylan Korte, and Braden Bauml each adding one hit.

The win pushes the Royals’ record to 3-1 on the season and moves them into a tie with the Saskatoon Smokin’ Guns for second in the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League just 0.5 games back of the first place Saskatoon Stallions.

The Royals return to action June 4 for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader in Marysburg as they welcome the Smokin’ Guns with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

BROUILLETTE: Nina Marie June 19, 1937 - May 13, 2017 The unexpected death of Mrs. Nina Marie (nee Paquin) Brouillette of Watson, SK, occurred at her residence on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the age of 79.

Nina was born to Jules and Antoinette (nee Harel) Paquin on June 19, 1937, in La Broquerie, MB. She married Adrien Brouillette in 1955, and afterward was blessed with three sons. Nina enjoyed knitting, playing bingo, bowling, volunteering, her membership with the CWL, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great mother, amazing grandmother, incredible great-grandmother, and a friend who will be sorely missed. Nina is survived by her three children and their families: EMERY (Diane) Brouillette of BC, Jennifer Gazandlare, daughter Desiree and son Adrian, Erica Thompson and son Andre, and Samantha Brouillette; RAYMOND Brouillette of Watson SK, Dawn Binsfeld and sons Ryder and Maddox, Emery (Jill) Brouillette and step-sons Rhett and Ryker, Daniel (Laura) Brouillette daughters Parker and Alexis and son Flynn, Jenni Brouillette and her son Jayce; HECTOR Brouillette of Sidney, BC, and daughter Maddison Brouillette; her brothers and sisters: Ronald, Hector (Shirley), Annette, Cecile, and Alice (Dave); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Adrien Brouillette; parents Jules and Annette Paquin; brothers: Joseph, Ted, Peter, and Phil; sisters: Jeannette, Bernice, Bertha, and Diane; daughter-inlaw, Lorraine; and her granddaughter Nina. CLASSEN: Myles August 5, 1956 - Jan 31, 2017 The death of Myles Classen, 60 years of Sherbrooke Community Centre, Saskatoon, occurred at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

Myles was born on August 5, 1956 at home on the farm in the St. Gregor area to Vincent and Ramona (nee Frank) Classen.

He was a survivor from the start, being born prematurely and weighing only 2 lbs, and having cerebral palsy, he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expected to survive, never mind live 60 years. When he was five years old, he went to Shrinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Winnipeg where he spent a couple of years. He then moved to Saskatoon where he lived for the rest of his life. Myles worked for 40 years at Cosmo Industries. He married Eileen Boucher and they enjoyed 4 years together before she passed away in 2004. For the last 12 years, he has resided at Sherbrooke Community Centre. Mylesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; personality shone through in all he did, touching the lives of all of the caregivers and other residents. Even though dependent on others for much of his daily care, he was independent and never complained about the circumstances of his life. He was fortunate to have a case worker who enjoyed outings with him, even taking him to Edmonton for some hockey games and to the race track. Myles always enjoyed visits with his family and his many friends at Sherbrooke Community Centre. Myles will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Ramona Classen of Humboldt; two sisters and four brothers: Cheryl (Vern) Chapman and Kevin (Kathy) Classen of Muenster, Glenn Classen of St. Albert, AB, Russell Classen, Angie Classen (Dave Mueller) and Darryl (Bev) Classen, all of Humboldt; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Myles was predeceased by his father Vincent Classen; wife Eileen Classen; and grandparents Leo and Elsie Frank and Michael and Clara Classen. A Funeral Service for Myles will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church, St. Gregor. Interment will follow in the St. Gregory Cemetery. GOETKEN: Sharon Anne June 29, 1946 - May 12, 2017 Sharon Anne Goetken, 70 years of Watson, passed away on May 12, 2017 at Humboldt District Hospital. Sharon was born June 29, 1946 to Edward and Anne (nee Podmoroff) Cullen at Kamsack. The family later moved to B.C. when she was quite young. Sharon and Gerald met through friends and they had an instant connection. Gerald became her soul mate. Sharon knew Gerald was a keeper by the way he treated her dogs Jobie, Kaylie, Applejack and Coco. She moved back to Saskatchewan to be with Gerald, a province she thoroughly loved and all that it had to offer. Sharon enjoyed driving around the back roads observing the animals and birds that are unique to the prairies.

She spent many hours outdoors in her large manicured vegetable and flower gardens. Sharon was an amazing cook and reaped the rewards of her garden by processing and canning for the winter. Geraldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite dish was her weekly prime rib roast. She loved to relax and enjoy a morning coffee on the deck, listening to the birds, in the summer. In the winter she would also relax by looking out her window and watching the deer and other animals passing through their yard. Sharon was also highly involved with sports and golfing. Sharon and Gerald shared a passion for travelling; they traveled all over Canada from Alaska to Newfoundland. They also enjoyed many camping trips in Canada and the U.S.A. Sharon will be remembered by her friends for her loud and boisterous laugh which came right from her belly. She will be always loved and remembered by her faithful companion of 12 years Gerald Thacyk: Sharon will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two sons, four grandchildren, sisters, extended family and many good friends.

RABNER: Gilbert April 27, 1927 - May 14, 2017 Gilbert Michael Rabner was born at home to Frank and Theresa (nee Grieman) Rabner on the family farm east of Fulda. He attended the Canvasback and Fulda Schools. After completing Grade 8, he helped out at home as well as being a hired hand on neighbouring farms. In 1951 he met Rosemarie Strueby at a Lake Lenore dance and in 1953 they were married in Marysburg. Over the years, they were blessed with four daughters. Gilbert and Rosemarie farmed the home place until 1978 when they moved to Humboldt where he did carpentry work as well as maintenance at the St. Augustine Church for several years. His interests included curling, golfing, ice fishing with his buddies and going for coffee at South 20. Gilbert will always be remembered for his quick wit and one-liner jokes. As years went by and the family grew, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him much joy. KUNZ: Lawrence William July 28, 1927 - May 16, 2017 It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence Kunz announces his passing on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. He was 89 years of age. Lawrence William Kunz was born in Humboldt on July 28, 1927 and grew up on the family farm near Annaheim.

Lawrence took all of his schooling at Harvest School. After school, he went to work for Nick Kramer, a close family friend.

On July 21, 1956, he married Marie Grieman and they made their home in Annaheim where they raised five children. After several years he started his own bulk farm fuel station, which he ran for more than fifteen years.

After the fuel business, Lawrence worked as a labourer for the school unit and also as town foreman for the village of Annaheim. He was also the caretaker of the arena in Annaheim for many years. Throughout his life he was very involved in playing and coaching many sports teams in baseball and hockey. He was a major organizer of the Annaheim Minor Sports Day for many years. Lawrence also enjoyed a round of golf with his children and his wife, Marie. Lawrence and Marie planned and organized many family camping trips and their children and grandchildren cherish those memories. Lawrenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest love was Marie and his family. After Marieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing, Lawrence moved to St. Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Haven in Cudworth and then the Cudworth Nursing Home where he lived until his passing. Lawrence will be lovingly remembered by his five children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Gordon Kunz of Saskatoon; Kelly (Val) Kunz of Humboldt and their children, Tinaya (Chad) Von Matt and their daughter Danica, Blair, Jade and her son Deakin; Bruce (Michelle) Kunz of Whitecourt, Alberta and their children, Brandon, Tyler, Justine, Blaine and Sydney; Ralph (Anita) Kunz of Saskatoon and their children, Sarah and her son Ethan, Melissa and Megan; Peggy (Sheldon) Becker of Cudworth and their children Shelby and Jarod; and his sister Agnes Binsfeld. Early runs lift Red Sox to doubleheader sweep

The Muenster Red Sox keep on rolling through the early part of their Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League season as they swept a home doubleheader on May 27 against the Parkland Expos to push their winning streak to eight games.

The game got off to a tough start for the Red Sox as they found themselves down 2-0 before they even had a chance to swing the bats.

The deficit did not last long however as they quickly tied the game with a pair of runs in the first inning, before adding five more in the second and four more in the third to build an 11-2 lead after three innings.

After the teams combined for 13 runs in the first three innings the game slowed right down with neither team managing another run as the Red Sox cruised to an 11-2 win.

Matthew McGrath picked up the win on the mound for the Red Sox as he gave up two unearned runs on two hits and one walk, while striking out three in

2.1 innings.

Thomas Bollefer, Kalvin Rueve, and Drew Bauml combined to pitch the final 4.2 innings giving up no runs and no hits while walking just two and striking out four.

Offensively the Red Sox were lead by McGrath and Bollefer who combined to hit 3-for-8 with four runs batted in.

Brody Frerichs and Morgan Gobeil also enjoyed terrific games at the plate as they combined to hit 5-for-5 with one run batted in, six runs scored, and one walk.

After a short break the teams returned for the second half of the doubleheader.

Just like in game one the Red Sox offense came out of the gates quickly scoring two in the first and three in the second to build a 5-0 lead after two innings.

The Red Sox added three more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away as they cruised to another dominant win, taking the back half of the doubleheader 8-0.

Bauml came on to pitch the seventh inning and gave up one hit and one walk before getting out of a bases loaded jam.

Rueve, Frerichs, and Gobeil enjoyed terrific games at the plate as they combined to hit 5-for-9 with one home run, four runs batted in, four walks, and five runs scored.

The wins push the Red Soxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; record to 8-0 on the season and leaves them in a first place tie with the Saskatoon Diamondbacks (10-2) with both teams two games up on the third place Saskatoon Cubs (6-2).

After enjoying some home cooking for the entire month of May the Red Sox head out on the road for a weekend doubleheader as they take on the Northwest Prairie Pirates in Lloydminster on June 4.

The 2815 Naicam Army Cadet Corps celebrated another year of success with their Annual Ceremonial Review.

Commanding Officer Lt. Adam Moskal says that the review gives the community the opportunity to see the hardwork the cadets are putting into their training.

“I want them to feel good for all they’ve accomplished all year,” says Moskal.

This was the 50th year the 2815 Naicam Army Cadet Corps has been in Naicam.

Moskal says that he hopes the Corps can celebrate another 50 years since the community support has always been there for them.

“It feels really good to be celebrating 50 years of cadets in Naicam but

it would not be possible without the support of our community and surrounding area. I hope that everyone involved past and present feels proud of what we have going on here.”
