Lanigan music festival wraps up 41st year

All good things must come to an end.

And that end came for the Lanigan and District Music Festival’s 41st Annual Music Festival with their final concert on May 5 at the Christian Fellowship Church.

This year’s festival featured a twoday vocal competition April 24-25, followed by a three day piano competition May 1-3.

Over the course of the week and a half festival, Nata Kline, Lanigan and District Music Festival President noted that she saw a tremendous amount of talent on display, noting there were a great deal of performers eight years and younger.

“We have very talented teachers in the area that are doing really good work with the kids and of course the kids have been working hard too getting ready for the festival.”

Seeing so many young children participating in the festival was really great to see, says Kline.

“It would be nice to see them continue because we don’t have that many older kids. When it gets up over 16 there was only four.”

In total the festival saw 97 students participating, with 164 entries in the

piano, and 123 entries in the vocal competitions.

Students came from all over the area to participate, including Lanigan, Jansen, LeRoy, Drake, Guernsey, Englefeld, Naicam, Humboldt, and Watson, with many of those performers competing in many different categories.

Being able to provide the students the space to perform is really important, says Kline because it gives them a chance to work on a song with a performance in mind.

“We don’t get a lot of opportunities to perform. And I think that that’s the most important part is that they can perform and get something to that level. And we have adjudicators that come and help them to be better.”

The festival wrapped up with the final concert, which featured more than 20 award winning performances, as selected by the adjudicators.

Being able to host the final concert is really important, says Kline because it showcases the talent to the whole community.

Awards we also handed out with a number of businesses, organizations, and individuals stepping up to help provide awards for the performers.

Kline would like to thank all of those who stepped up to help make the festival a success.

“We couldn’t do it without them there would be no awards if there weren’t people donating money for that.”

Highway work includes highway grade raises

Saskatchewan Department of Highways are still working on trouble spots in local areas, including on Highway 20 and Highway 6.

Steve Shaheen, Interactive and Social Media Consultant with Department of Highways says that these areas are spots where the highways need grade raises and this is where excess dirt is needed as a result of flood issues.

Motorists have been noticing pits dug near trouble spots on both highways.

Grade raises on Highway 6 near Dafoe are being done because of the rising of Big Quill Lake.

In 2016 Highways did a grade raise between the highways 5 and 16 junctions. This year work is being done north of the highway 16 junction.

Work began early spring with materials being taken from local land with a sizeable pit being dug. Weather permitting, work will be done in mid-June, says Shaheen. “(That highway) has been problematic because of mother nature and this is our response to that.”

The cost of the project will be $2.5 million and that cost does not include resurfacing the roadway.

Shaheen says this is the time that motorists need to be extra cautious on the roads during construction time since the section was turned back to a gravel surface. Please watch for posted speed limits and be careful around road crews.

With the rising of Houghton and Dead Moose Lakes, Highway 20 near Fulda is needing an emergency grade raise.

“Because of the rising water levels that highway is at risk of becoming impassible so this is our response to that,” says Shaheen.

That soft material will be graded off and compacted with gravel, says Shaheen.

“We do understand the state of that road was unacceptable and we’ve been working with contractors to get it back to where road travel is more satisfactory,” says Shaheen.

Work will continue weather permitting with a grade raise of 2.8 kilometres starting last fall.

With two large pits remaining from the grade raise, the Department will discussing what to do with the pit that remains.

More grade raises may happen in the next couple of weeks, says Shaheen, with an update coming out before the May long weekend so motorists can plan their routes.

Matthews top rookie? It’s not automatic

Judging by the stats the two leading players put up, the voting for the 2016-17 Calder Trophy, given to the best rookie in the National Hockey League, should be razor thin between Auston Matthews of Toronto and Patrik Laine of Winnipeg.

If you’re a Torontonian, or who happens to live somewhere in the Golden Triangle of Ontario, you laugh at the notion that the vote will be close. Matthews is a slam-dunk winner in the minds of Eastern Canadians, based on his 40-goal season (the only rookie to hit that mark, and second-most in the entire league) and piloting the Leafs’ resurgence.

But should the Calder voting be a slam dunk? Absolutely not, when the numbers are analyzed a little closer. In fact, a solid case can be made that Laine, one year younger than his 19-year-old rival, had statistically a superior season to Matthews, but received nowhere near the national attention because, duh, he doesn’t ply his trade in the Centre of the Universe, home to Matthews.

Matthews may have outscored Laine 40-36, but the big centre from Phoenix, Ariz., who was selected first overall in last summer’s draft, played in all 82 of the Leafs’ games, while the deadly-shooting Finn, Laine, missed nine games because of a concussion he suffered from an open-ice hit by Jake McCabe of the Sabres Jan. 7.

So put a check mark under Matthews’ name for durability but in about a dozen statistical categories — on a per-game basis — Laine has a decided edge.

To wit: Points per game: Laine had .88; Matthews .84;

Goals per game: Laine had .493; Matthews .487; Plusminus: Laine plus 7; Matthews plus two; Multi-goal games: Laine 7; Matthews 6; Hits: Laine 80; Matthews 21. Hat tricks: Laine 3; Matthews 1. And perhaps most telling: Goals vs. the ‘other guy’: Laine had five against the Leafs; Matthews had zero against the Jets.

Matthews played on a line with relatively inferior linemates (fellow rookies William Nylander and Zach Hyman) while Laine skated alongside veteran centre Mark Scheifele most of the season, a fact Toronto coach Mike Babcock pointed out in February as Calder Trophy talk started to heat up.

One of them will win (Zach Werenski of Columbus is the third finalist) and it will likely be Matthews, since more trophy voters come from the Eastern time zone. In reality, he probably should: Ask yourself this: Would the two teams agree to swap their superstars in a one-for-one blockbuster? Toronto definitely wouldn’t. Winnipeg probably would.

Crop Report for the period April 25 to May 21, 2017 Saskatchewan farmers are slowly making their way into the field. Adverse weather has delayed spring field work, such as applying herbicide, harrowing and seeding, in some areas.

Many fields remain wet. Warm and dry weather will be needed in the coming weeks before seeding can get fully under way.

The majority of producers with crop from last year still in the field have, so far been, unable to finish harvesting due to cool weather, wet field conditions and lodged crops. It is estimated that

approximately one million acres of the 2016 crop remains in the field, with the majority being in the west-central and northeastern regions of the province.

There was little harvest activity over the winter months in these areas, and spring progress has been very limited.

Aeration bins and grain dryers have been in continuous operation on many farms since last fall.

Despite these challenges, some producers in the south of the province have begun seeding pulses and cereals.

One per cent of the provincial crop is

in the ground, compared to the fiveyear (2012-2016) seeding average for this time of year of six per cent. In the southeast, producers are reporting that three per cent of the crop is seeded, while in the southwest, producers have two per cent seeded. There is very little, if any, crop seeded in the other areas of the province.

Much of the province received large amounts of precipitation over the last month, and fields remain wet in many areas. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 30 per cent surplus,

69 per cent adequate and one per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 16 per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and three per cent short.

Producers are busy seeding, calving, controlling weeds, working fields and trying to wrap up last year’s harvest.

Balancing ag and environment not an easy task

That said it is not always an easy thing to accomplish.

A broadly integrated approach is required if we are to conserve threatened ecosystem such as prairie grasslands. That was the clear message

those attending an Earth Day presentation in Yorkton at an event hosted by the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association heard recently from speaker Kenton Lysak with the Meewasin Valley Authority in Saskatoon.

“Grasslands now are really one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world,” said Lysak.

Lysak said the loss of such grasslands has been dramatic.

“There’s only five per cent of what there was 100 years ago,” he said.

The loss of grasslands has been a result of human encroachment from urbanization and agriculture. However, Lysak is not one who sees farm-

ers as “evil men with pitchforks.” He said he understands that farmers require land to grow food for a growing world population.

But Lysak said that does not mean efforts to protect what natural grasslands may remain should not be given priority.

That was one aspect of government – operated cattle pastures which seems to have been lost as both the federal and provincial governments (at least in Saskatchewan), more to divest themselves of such pasture lands.

Pastures under the PFRA contain some of the largest remnants of native prairie in Cana-

da and stretch over 1.5 million acres of land.

Through the Community Pasture Program, native prairie has been sustainably managed, and over 358,000 acres of poor-quality cultivated lands have been returned to grass. Integral to the sustainable management of these lands is the grazing of cattle.

In the spring of 2012, the federal government’s announcement it would divest the pastures to the provincial governments.

It was a short-sighted decision at the federal level as it gave up control of the native prairie ecosystems within the pastures.

ture of the Saskatchewan pasture lands with the provincial government holding two public meetings on the future use of lands that are part of the Saskatchewan Pastures Program. The program consists of approximately 780,000 acres located at 50 sites throughout the province.

To expect any result other than a process of transferring the majority of the lands to private hands would seem to be overly optimistic from a conservationist point of view.

Even the process is being questioned in some quarters.

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is certainly not

pleased.

“We have Inherent and Treaty rights over all Crown lands: pasture lands, wildlife lands, provincial parks and national parks, and all bodies of water. Any potential sale will impact all of our First Nations,” said Chief Bobby Cameron in a release.

“First Nations people need to be brought on as co-managers of any new parks developed from these pastures on their traditional territory.”

Whatever the process, and whoever the partners, protecting the prairie grasslands needs to be at the top of the priority list, and so far it does not appear to be a key component of things.

Red Sox roll to pair of wins

The Muenster Red Sox kicked off the home portion of their schedule on a high note as they swept their home opening double header against the Northwest Prairie Pirates on May 7.

Game one of the doubleheader got off to a terrible start for the Red Sox as they gave up three runs in the top of the first inning.

After a full inning of scoreless baseball the Sox’s bats came alive in the bottom of the second as they plated three runs, adding five more in the third inning as they brought ten batters to the plate.

The Sox added to their lead in the fourth inning as Brody Frerichs launched a 3-1 pitch over the leftcentre field fence, for his first home run of the season.

Thomas Bollefer came on in relief of Frerichs in the fifth and pitched three shutout innings as the Red Sox rolled to a 9-3 win.

Frerichs and Bollefer were solid on the mound for the Red Sox as they combined to give up just three earned runs, five hits, and three walks, while striking out eight.

After a half an hour break the teams returned to action for the back half of

the doubleheader, which the Red Sox dominated, winning 6-0.

After holding the Pirates scoreless in the top half of the first inning the Red Sox grabbed a lead they would

not relinquish scoring four runs on two hits, three errors, and two walks as they brought eight batters to the plate.

The two teams locked into a pitchers duel for the next four and a half innings as neither team managed a run, before the Sox added two more on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Logan Hofmann was spectacular on the mound for the Red Sox pitching five innings of one hit, two walk ball, while striking out 11.

Morgan Gobeil came on in relief of Hofmann in the sixth inning and pitched two innings of one hit, two walk ball.

Bollefer was steady at the plate for the Red Sox finishing 2-3 with one run batted in, and one run scored.

The wins pushes the Sox’s record to 4-0 on the season and moves them into first place in the league standings one game ahead of a trio of teams.

It started with a mask: One-woman play about Second World War

A one-woman play about a man returning to the shores of Normandy 60 years after D-Day began with a mask.

Julia Mackey and her partner Dirk Van Stralen were at an acting workshop in 2002 where, using a mask, they had to create a character.

“The mask that I was working with actually looked like an old man and so that’s where the story started,” Mackey said. “I just came up with this idea of this guy and his brothers from the Prairies and their connection to the Second World War and it kind of grew out of that.”

That’s where Jake, the protagonist of Jake’s Gift, was created. The play was performed in Wadena, Kelvington and Melfort.

A year after that workshop, Mackey was watching the news with Van Stralen and saw a piece about the 60th anniversary of Normandy.

“I had one of those feelings that was where the rest of the story was because after that workshop, I felt like I really wanted to explore Jake’s story more and I felt it was unfinished.”

So she went there for a week in June 2004, interviewing as many former soldiers about their D-Day experiences and what it was like to be back. For a lot of those veterans, this was their first time back since D-Day.

“It was a very moving experience and a lot of them were very generous with their stories and experiences during that time,” Mackey said.

By combining those stories with her own experiences, Mackey wrote Jake’s Gift. The play sees Jake return to Juno Beach for the 60th anniversary to visit the grave of his brother Chester, who died during the war. While there, he encounters Isabelle, a 10-year-old from the nearby village.

“When I was writing the story, I wanted to find a way of how to wrap this all up and the little girl was inspired by this really young group of French students that I saw saying hello to the Canadian veterans,” Mackey said. “There was this one girl in particular who was just a little bit pushy and she was trying to get to the front of the pack and shake the hand of these veterans.”

Isabelle helps Jake crack out painful memories that he’s had for 60 years.

Both characters are the type who speak their mind.

“Even though they’re both at the opposite ends of life, they’re both at a time of life where there’s no inhibitions so they just kind of say what they think.”

Mackey said when she wrote the play, she didn’t anticipate it would be a one-woman play. She knew she wanted to play Jake after years of working on the character, but she also knew how

the other character would sound and act.

“So I just said to Dirk one day, ‘do you think this could be a solo show?’ I always wanted the challenge of doing that as an actor because I had never done a solo performance before.”

Van Stralen, who’s the play’s director, told her to give it a try and it ended up working out to Mackey’s satisfaction. She now has little problem

transitioning between the characters.

At the play, there will also be buttons for sale, with proceeds to go to the local Legion.

The actor said she still loves performing the play even though she’s been doing it for 10 years.

“I’m not tired of it at all and so as long as people will keep asking us to come to their communities, I think we will do that as long as we are able to.”

The Horizon Central Athletic Association handed out their 2017 recognition awards at their annual spring meeting on May 2.

This year the association handed out eight awards to individuals from around the region, including six from the immediate region including Middle Lake, Humboldt, Kelvington, Englefeld, Viscount, and Wynyard.

The awards recognize individuals “for their outstanding contributions to school athletics programs,” states the HCAA press release.

Lisa Parsons Lisa Parsons has coached at Three Lakes School in Middle Lake for over 23 years where she has coached a number of sports including basketball, soccer, and track and field when help is needed.

In addition to coaching Parson also lent a hand officiating basketball and has also been willing to organize tournaments and events throughout the school year.

“Lisa’s bright smile and cheery demeanor always puts smiles on the kids’ faces, but she also demands dedication and hard work from her players,” the press release stated.

Rob Lissinna Rob Lissinna first joined Kelvington High School as a teacher in 2008 and has since coached a wide variety of different sports including volleyball, badminton, track and field, and flag football.

In addition to coaching sports teams Lissinna also helps run a weekly fitness program for students who are looking for additional conditioning or physical activity opportunities and is also an active participant in intramurals at Kelvington High School.

Charlie Biemans Charlie Biemans has invested countless hours into the athletics program at Englefeld School.

Biemans has coached a number of different sports in Englefeld including basketball, cross-country, curling, and badminton, and is a large supporter of the volleyball programs.

In addition to coaching the athletes, Beimans has also taken on a mentorship role of new staff, and still attends HCAA meetings as the school representative when needed and often takes care of the SHSAA registrations for the school.

“He has truly dedicated himself to the promotion of sport in our school and throughout the district,” noted the press release.

Travis Serke Travis Serke began his teaching career at Viscount Central School in 1997 and since then has gone on to coach a number of sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton, track and field, and touch football.

In addition to coaching Serke also lends a hand as the school’s athletic director and was an instrumental part in bringing six-man football to Viscount School.

Serke also organizes football camps for players and oftentimes invites many of the former players who have achieved success in football to the camps.

“Travis is a positive role model for the young men and women who have attended the school,” noted the press release.

Ryan Peterson Ryan Peterson spent the last number of years putting countless hours in the Wynyard Composite High School athletics program where he has helped coach a number of sports including football and badminton.

In addition to coaching Peterson also spends countless hours in the weight room, where he works alongside many of the students, coming in as early as 6:30 a.m., and many days after school, while also giving up his lunch hours.

“His dedication to the physical fitness of the students is second-to none,” says the press release.

Welcome to St. Peter’s Abbey

By Becky Zimmer Humboldt Journal The history of the Humboldt area cannot be told without the story of the Monks of the Order of St. Benedict.

And nothing is more of a symbol of their story than St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster.

It may not be a public space but anyone is welcome to go out and tour around the Abbey and grounds, which are beautifully kept.

The Fathers and Brothers of the Order of St. Benedict only ask for the property to be respected, says Guestmaster Fr. Demetrius Wasylyniuk, OSB. Fr. Demetrius’s role as guestmaster for the last 20 years has been to welcome guests.

He is also the one to contact for anyone who wants a tour of the rich history of the Abbey, which includes Michael Hall, which is the home to St. Peter’s College, the monastery, the chapel, St. Peter’s Church, the arena, and predominantly the majority of land surrounding Muenster.

The majority of the land was worked by the monks but over time their numbers have dwindled where they no longer have the manpower. They do still have an orchard and garden, which provides the majority of food for the monks.

The Abbey itself was established to provide spiritual care to the Catholic German settlers during the mass immigration to the Humboldt area at the turn of the century.

Settlers were coming from all around the world to seize the opportunities from the Homestead Act where settlers could purchase 160 acres of land for a $10 registration fee.

Settlers from both the United States and Germany itself were requesting priests to come and fill that spiritual need and monks from St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minn. answered that call in 1903.

During that time, the monks stayed in a log and mud

house and to celebrate 100 years in the Humboldt area in 2003, a replica was built of the house just across the road from Michael Hall.

In 1921, the monks were asked to serve the surrounding parishes since the majority of the settlements were German Catholic and that is how the abbacy was born, says Fr. Demetrius, at a time where there was only seven in the world.

The monks also provided education to the children of the settlers and became affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan in 1926.

Current University of Saskatchewan students can take their first and second years at the College before moving on to a university setting, mainly to the University of Saskatchewan.

The College Library is also open to the public so anyone can come and enjoy the college atmosphere, especially when it comes to events like author readings.

Besides student housing, which is available in Severin Hall, St. Scholastic and the guest wing provide rooms for between 2,500 to 3,000 guests a year, either for conferences or workshops that are hosted at the Abbey, from the Saskatchewan Stitches Conference

to the Saskatchewan Writers Guild writing retreats. photos by Becky Zimmer Despite extensive renovations that started in 2008, the Abbey’s rich history can still be found around the grounds.

The root cellar, also affectionately called the Dungeon, was hand dug in 1921 under the monastery and is still in use housing the vegetables and canning done by the monks.

Pictures from their early years all the way to the present time are up all around the guest wing and college so guests can see plenty of the Abbey’s history during their stay.

The grounds make a beautiful walking opportunity for guests and visitors and Fr. Demetrius suggests taking along some peanuts. The chickadees who make the Abbey their home will eat out of people’s hands if they have the right treat, he says.

With so much to see and do, Fr. Demetrius says that they only ask that people respect the Abbey and the people who live there.

Remembering Waldsea Lake

By Christopher Lee Humboldt Journal With all of the talk about flooding issues in the province one of the places that was hit particularly hard by this was Waldsea Lake.

With its rich history, this is a sad loss for Humboldt and area.

Waldsea Lake was a mineral lake and one of only two in all of Canada to feature the unique mineral content.

The lake was clear and was fed by an underground river.

This made the lake a health and holiday resort, with its

medicinal waters.

A chemist from Saskatoon City Hospital noted the lake’s healing qualities compared to that of distinguished bathing houses in Europe.

By 1913 there was a pavilion on the shore of the lake, which was equipped with a dancing hall, boat and bathing houses, and a colony of summer residences.

At this time, the pavilion stretched out onto the water and allowed dancers to glide their boats up to the veranda and enter the hall without getting sand in their shoes.

By 1916, water levels became an issue for the lake due to heavy rains, which saw the water move more than 40 feet further up the beach.

During this time, the lake featured no electricity and received their first phone line in December 1916.

During those days, milk and eggs were delivered by the Kalthoff and Reinhart families, with groceries delivered by Max Bauer.

A boy scout camp was established in the park area in 1920, which was a very popular time as the park was busy

with families taking advantage of the swimming area, family picnic centre, nine-hole golf course, and two tennis courts with a shared clubhouse.

The golf course was established on Oct. 20, 1921 as the original Humboldt Golf Club and featured 30 members.

The course featured nine sand green holes, and was considered a good course for its time.

The golf course was a key employer to a number of Humboldt boys, who would ride their bikes to the course in the afternoon hoping to find a job

as a caddy or groundskeeper.

That same year the beach was organized into a village and featured an overseer and council.

During this time, approximately 40-50 cabins could be found in the village.

The main feature of the main beach was the dance pavilion built on pilings, a concession, change rooms and an outer deck.

During the 1930s the lake was a popular spot with many people spending their entire summer at the lake.

Remembering Waldsea Lake Continued from page 11 Those residents were sustained by the deliveries of bakery items, groceries, and drinking water, with farmers providing deliveries of butter and milk.

During this time, there were approximately 40 cottages at the lake.

After seeing water levels rise significantly in 1916, the water levels plummeted by the end of the 1930’s, which caused the lake to be invaded by red bugs, and suckers.

This also came during a time when the economy was in crisis, which saw war break out, resulting in the rationing of gas.

This made it very difficult for tourists to visit Waldsea, with many of the locals called into service.

With supplies during the war being limited, the cabins would be hauled away and renovated to be used as town residences or for grain storage and chicken coops.

The golf clubhouse was also moved during this time and placed on the current 17th hole of the Humboldt Golf Club, but was moved back to Waldsea years later to be used as the Boy Scout Camp.

Water levels and economy improved in the 1950s and ‘60s again making Waldsea Lake a popular beach for day usage.

A group of local businessmen including Walter Telfer, Cyril Thompson, Alf Butterly, Henry Nieman, and Leo Gehlen sought to take advantage of a new provincial government regional park initiative which aimed to provide recreation and to develop tourism.

The group’s application was approved by the provincial cabinet on July 27, 1961, making Waldsea Lake the sixth regional park established by the province.

The capital cost of the new park was set at $20,000 and was shared on a 60-40 basis between the provincial government, Town of Humboldt, and RM of Humboldt, with assistance coming from the Board of Trade, Royal Canadian Legion, Knights of Columbus, and Lions Club.

This new park renewed interest in the lake and the regional park gained many new cabins.

A new concession was built, which featured new living quarters for the new managers, Leonard and Dorothy Neubauer.

During this time new change rooms and bathrooms were also built and the beach was cleaned up, making the lake a popular destination once again.

In the early 1970s, the Park Board opened up a new development, which saw 16 lots and campsites added to the park, as well as a boat launch at the north end of the lake.

Cabins and campsites replaced the old wiener roast sites and the lake front road was replaced by a new road at the rear of the cabins.

This also saw the installation of electricity for the campsites and cabins.

The 1990s saw the RM of Humboldt take over operations of the area of the park used for cabins.

During this time a number of new developments were established including a new concession gate, a mini golf course, new campsites, hiking and biking trails, a new boat launch, driving range, and the old concession was turned into a rental cabin with the newer one converted into the manager’s residence.

Looking to enhance indoor recreation and socialization, the former Humboldt Bible Church was moved near the main beach, and water was piped into the cabins from the dugout.

During this time, the playground built by the Jaycee’s in the 1980s was moved to the former ball diamonds.

Water levels again became a problem for Waldsea in the early 2000s and by late 2006, early 2007 the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority issued a long-term potential flood warning.

Water levels were nearing historical peak levels by this time and at least one building was already being impacted by

the high water levels.

This was caused because Waldsea does not have an outlet.

At this time water would have to rise another 5m for water to naturally spill out of the lake, with the only natural way for Waldsea’s levels to decrease being through evaporation.

A pair of factors were at play in the increase of water levels including natural causes like precipitation, and underground inflows, and a manmade cause from a drainage ditch dug in the 1960s during a period of low water levels, which directed all runoff into the lake.

During this time a control structure was installed on the drainage ditch, which reduced the drainage contributing to the lake by 30 per cent.

By June, 2007 the cabins were beginning to be flooded with 48 of the 70 cabins either in the water or directly threatened by rising water levels.

Due to the state of the park the regional park was closed and a state of emergency was called by the RM of Humboldt.

Water tests were also required to ensure that it was safe to be in, as rising levels of debris found its way into the lake due to the flooding.

By July, 35 cabins were still being immediately threatened by high water or were in the water and in August with cabins already being flooded a decision was made to build a berm to help offset the flow of water to the cabins.

At this time 25 of the 63 remaining cabins were condemned to be demolished, with four or five of those being

reclaimed and the remaining 20 or 21 being destroyed.

In December the berm was completed.

This held off the flooding for a short time but by April 2009 flooding again became a problem with the RM of Humboldt forced to place round hay bales in front of a culvert to slow runoff enough to allow pumps to keep up.

During this time lots were resurveyed, for the first time since 1918.

It was decided, due to the rise in water levels, that the regional park would not be opened during the 2009 season, and in the summer a lot of work was done to try to make the park ready to be reopened in 2010.

Water levels did not improve by June.

The 2010 water levels were still much too high for the park to be reopened resulting in the closure of the park, which had not been opened since the spring of 2007.

In September the area saw a large rain storm blow through, which raised the water levels by six inches, and in October the survival of Waldsea Lake looked to be dire if weather conditions did not improve drastically.

By December the berm, which was built in 2007 and raised in 2008, and again earlier in 2010 was completely swallowed up by water.

Due to heavy storms over the year, which saw 39 inches of rain, the lake saw a 45 inch rise in water levels.

In March 2011 the struggle was officially over for Waldsea Lake as it was decommissioned due to the flooding.

Obituaries MEYER: William Dec 24, 1929 - May 1, 2017 It is with deep sadness that the family of William Meyer of Luther Care Home, Saskatoon, SK, announces his passing at his residence on Monday, May 1, 2017. He was 87 years of age. William â&#x20AC;&#x153;Willieâ&#x20AC;? was born on December 24, 1929, to Frederick and Maria (nee Isaac) Meyer at their home in Lockwood, SK. He took his schooling in Lockwood, completing Grade 10 before farming with his father. After his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death in 1948, Willie worked the farm with his half-brother John. When he reached the age of 21, Willie continued the farming operation in partnership with John, until John retired in 1970. In 1954, Willie married the local primary school teacher, Isobel Conley, and they moved out of town to live on the farm. They both continued with their careers until the spring of 1990, when they sold the farm and moved to Humboldt, Isobelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthplace. Willie and Isobel enjoyed their retirement life by curling, fishing, playing cards, golfing, spending time at their cottage at Turtle Lake and, of course, their favorite activity - dancing. They also made trips to meet relatives and tour the birthplaces of Isobelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents. Willie lost Isobel to cancer on September 30, 2001. He remained in Humboldt for almost four years before moving to Saskatoon. He continued with his love of dancing and attended polka fests around the country. As well, visiting on coffee row at Market Mall, and trying his luck at the Dunes Casino helped fill his days. In January of 2016, Willie suffered a fall which resulted in a hip replacement. He was unable to return to his apartment and took up residence at the Luther Special Care Home where he resided until his passing. Willie was a community-minded individual, always willing to help people or assist on various projects. He served as a municipal councillor for six years, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, an original share holder at the Lanigan Poundmaker Feed Lot, belonged to local golf and curling clubs, and was a season ticket holder of the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enjoy all things that come with age, but you have to make the best of it and enjoy your life as long as you can.â&#x20AC;? Willie. William was predeceased by his wife, Isobel (nee Conley) Meyer; parents, Fred and Maria (nee Isaac) Meyer; four half-brothers: George, Abram, Frank, and John; and by two half-sisters: Mary, and Maria (in infancy). He is survived by his brother-in-law, Dickson; and by many nieces and nephews. Although Willie and Isobel didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any children of their own, they considered Jim Kidd and Murray Scott to be their family. Jim was a constant visitor on weekends and holidays, and Murray lived with them from his teen years on. Special thanks to the staff at Luther Special Care Home for their care. A Service of Remembrance was held at Westminster United Church, Humboldt, on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Brenda Curtis. Others taking part were: Karen Scott, Kathryn Toth and Dorothy Sollosy, scripture readers; Murray Scott and Cliff Wiebe, words of remembrance; and Donna Barth, urnbearer. Music ministry was provided by organist Beverly Decker and members of the Westminster Community Choir. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Kidd, Jacqueline Kidd, Donna Barth, Barbara Thick, Keith Scott, and Michelle Lilles. Interment followed at Humboldt Public Cemetery.

EKLUND: Lloyd McKenzie June 19, 1934 - May 2, 2017 The sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Lloyd Mackenzie Eklund, 82 years occurred at his residence in Watson on Tuesday May 2, 2017. Lloyd was born on June 29, 1934 in Watson to Edward and Ethel (nee Justis) Eklund. Lloyd obtained his education at Spalding. He later joined the services and it was while in Winnipeg he married Vivian McPherson at Fort Osborne Army Barracks on December 14, 1954. They later moved to the Archerwill area and started their family. From this union seven children were born. The family later moved to Meacham where Lloyd worked at the local Versatile shop. Lloyd was very gifted when it came to mechanical duties. He thoroughly enjoyed this job as he could drive around and help farmers and get to visit all the farmers along the way. When retirement arrived Lloyd moved to Watson where he resided until his passing. Lloyd and Vivian enjoyed many annual Tennant Jamboree Festivities in the Naicam area.

Lloyd was a very social person and loved visiting and catching up on all the local events in the area. He also was an avid gardener and took pride in growing wonderful produce. Lloyd was known to spend many hours puttering in his garage. During the long winter months Lloyd would be found putting many puzzles together. Lloyd will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his seven children: Barry (Maggie) Eklund, Lonnie Eklund, Valerie (Garry) Anderson, Carron McEachern, Dean Eklund, Barbara Eklund and Dianna Eklund (Jim); 16 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren; brother: Carmen Eklund and sister Elma Brenna.

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Edward (1982) Ethel (1975); wife Vivian (2014); siblings: Margaret Eklund (1936), Vernon Eklund (2003), Edna Morley (2016) and Alice Guttormson (2016). By Sandra Reid Correspondent Amazingly life-like baby dolls are way more than a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Toyota â&#x20AC;&#x153;Baby dolls called reborns are much more than a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s toyâ&#x20AC;?, says reborn doll artists Lorna Robert.

Some people think they are adorable and some think them a little creepy because they look so real, but for many they fill a void in their life.

Lorna discovered â&#x20AC;&#x153;rebornâ&#x20AC;? baby dolls when looking for a realistic doll to model her baby knits at craft fairs.

Reborn dolls are created from artist or 3D computer sculpts of real babies.

The sculpt is then cast in vinyl and me-

ticulously painted by a reborn doll artists. Life-like skin is painted with veins, mottling, baby scratches, stork bites, and milk spots. Painted finger and toe nails bring life to little feet and hands. Hair is rooted one at a time, as are eyebrows and eyelashes.

The doll is then weighted and stuffed to feel like a real baby. A doll takes 40 to 100 hours to complete.

These dolls are widely used as therapy dolls for people suffering from dimensia, or for mothers who have lost a baby.

As one father put it, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold a picture.

One 40-year-old says that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold one of these dolls without rocking

or patting their little backs. When she comes home from a crazy day at work, she picks up her doll and calms right down.

Doll collectors buy the dolls as well.

Some people have a custom made doll to look like their child.

Lorna recently took her baby dolls to a seniors village for residents to cuddle and reminisce about real babies of the past. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was so amazing to see the look on the seniors faces and hear them tell their stories. One gentleman held the babies hand and spoke softly to it. The dolls brought such joy,â&#x20AC;? she said.

It was a great day for shoppers and sellers and the weather was perfect.

The visiting at each sale was awesome.

Annaheim, Wadena win regional titles

It was a busy week for badminton players from around the area as the juniors competed in the district championships and the seniors in the regional championships.

Junior Raymore emerged as the big winners of the district championships as they were the only school to claim more than one top two finish as they finished first in both the boys singles, and mixed doubles events.

Finishing just behind Raymore was St. Brieux in boys singles and Wynyard in mixed doubles.

In boys doubles action, Annaheim took home top spot as they edged out Cudworth, who was left to claim silver.

Muenster claimed their lone top two in girls doubles action as they claimed the top prize.

Senior Englefeld enjoyed a great deal of success at the regional championships as they sent four

In boys singles action Englefeld picked up the silver medal thanks to a perfect 3-0 round robin with a two sets to one victory over Warman and two sets to none victories over Sturgeon Lake and Melfort.

In the semi-final Englefeld picked up a two sets to one victory but in the final Englefeld ran into a tough Wadena player who knocked off Englefeld two sets to none.

Wadena picked up the gold medal with a perfect tournament finishing 5-0, not dropping a set along the way as they beat Justus, PA St. Mary, Porcupine Plain, Warman, and Englefeld.

After cruising through the round robin in boys doubles action with two sets to none wins over Perdue,

Shellbrook, and Melfort, Middle Lake ran into some trouble in the playoffs and it cost them as they dropped a two sets to none decision against Humboldt and a two sets to one decision against Melfort, as Middle Lake finished fourth.

In girls doubles action, Naicam picked up the silver medal as they rolled through their first four games beating Sturgeon Lake and Englefeld 2 two sets to none, and Perdue two sets to one, before beating Englefeld 1 two sets to none in the semi-final.

In the final Naicam ran into some trouble and were bounced

by Carrot River two sets to none.

Englefeld finished third and fourth in girls doubles action as Englefeld 1 knocked off Englefeld 2, two sets to none in the bronze medal final.

With their loss in the bronze medal final Englefeld 2 wrapped up their tournament with a 2-3 record, with losses coming to Carrot River, Naicam, and Englefeld 1, and wins coming against Perdue, and Sturgeon Lake.

Things did not go very well for Raymore in girls singles action as they finished the tournament with a 0-3 record, with all three match losses against Olser VCA, Debden, and Melfort, being two sets to none.

The mixed doubles tournament was full of local teams as four teams competed for the regional title.

Annaheim topped all teams picking up the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 record, not losing a set along the way as they knocked off Colonsay, Canwood,

Carrot River, Englefeld, and Perdue.

Englefeld finished two steps lower on the podium than Annaheim did as they captured the bronze medal with a two sets to none win over Colonsay in the bronze medal final.

Englefeld wrapped up the tournament with a 2-3 record with losses to Perdue, Naicam, and Annaheim, and wins over Shellbrook and Colonsay.

With their loss to Englefeld in the bronze medal final Colonsay finished the tournament in fourth place with a 2-3 record thanks to wins over Carrot River and Canwood, and losses against Annaheim, Perdue, and Englefeld.

Rounding out the field was Naicam who finished the round robin with a 2-1 record with wins over Shellbrook and Englefeld and a loss against Perdue.

Looking ahead, Englefeld and Wadenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boys singles teams, Naicamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s girls doubles team, and Annaheimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mixed doubles teams now turn their attention to the provincial championships in Weyburn on May 13.
