Archerwill residents talk taxes at public meeting

Anger over civic taxes in Archerwill led to a public meeting – chaired by the president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association as an outside authority to mediate over two sides.

The meeting filled the Archerwill Centennial Centre the evening of Oct. 26.

The tax debate began when Archerwill’s council decided to keep its tax rates the same: a base tax of $300 per property, plus around 1.68 per cent of the property’s assessment for residential properties, around 5.88 per cent of the assessment for commercial properties, and around 3.08 per cent of the assessment for agricultural properties.

The problem: property assessments were revalued last year, with most properties going up a little and some going up a lot. The result: an increase in taxes, not evenly distributed across the village.

Myrna Christianson, a member of the Concerned Archerwill Taxpayers, an advocacy group formed after the tax levy was issued, said the taxes were unfair.

“What most towns, villages and cities did, instead of passing a whole bunch onto their taxpayers, is they adjusted the mill rate [which dictates taxes based on proportion of an assessment]. Some people changed the base tax, or did whatever they had to do to make it more fair,” she said.

“Our beef is that they didn’t consider any of that here.”

Jody Hagenes, Archerwill’s mayor, said council realized that taxes would increase, but they didn’t realize how it would affect certain properties.

“We figured with leaving the mill rate the same, taxes would go up, but it wouldn’t be unbearable. As it turned out, we were wrong – on some of them,” he said. “We didn’t specifically go house by house and see how the assessments went up.”

There are some expenses coming up for the village: it received a grant to upgrade its water treatment plant, the sewage lift station needs repairs, some equipment needs to be replaced and the village has to pay 28 per cent of the cost of closing down the Ponass Lake Landfill.

After the tax was levied, the Concerned Archerwill Taxpayers spoke at council twice. Neither side was satis-

fied with how those meetings went, with council feeling mobbed and the taxpayers feeling they were ignored.

The frustration soon manifested itself into life in the village at large.

The Concerned Archerwill Taxpayers contacted the province’s municipal ministry, which suggested they spark a public meeting through a petition. They got twice the amount of signatures required.

At the Oct. 26 meeting, both sides had an opening statement, followed by a long question period where villagers could ask council – and the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency, which sets the values of property assessments – questions.

Gordon Barnhart, the president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, chaired the meeting and was tasked with keeping proceedings civil.

“There’s some division, certainly, in the community, but by the time it ended, I’m sensing there was a coming together of people in this community and that is so important,” said Barnhart, a councillor for Saltcoats.

“All of the small communities of Saskatchewan, there’s a lot of pressure on us with sewer and water and all

of those issues, and we have a small tax base.”

As for trying to prevent a similar situation from happening next year, council is planning to hold a public meeting before the taxes are levied.

“We’re going to start looking at taxes earlier than we did this past year,” Hagenes said. “If we don’t start earlier, then we’ll end up in the same boat next year, rushing through it and getting the taxes out. In December, we’re going to start looking at it.”

Council wants to examine the base taxes and mill rates it issues to try to come up with a reasonable solution.

“Chances are, the taxes will come down next year,” the mayor said.

On their Facebook page, the Concerned Archerwill Taxpayers said it was good to see the number of people that attended the meeting.

“So, a few things were accomplished. The meeting was held. The mayor and councillors all showed up, sat there and faced people. They admitted some decisions maybe weren’t the best,” they wrote. “As for the ongoing narrative that this has split the town. Nonsense. Taxpayers want fair taxes. How can there be another side?”

#MeToo sad reminder of the times

Within days of reports of a scandal involving movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, #MeToo became a common sight on social media.

Women and men both used the hashtag on Twitter, Facebook and other social media to state that they had been sexually harassed or assaulted.

An article in The Atlantic (“The Movement of #MeToo,” Oct. 16, 2017) described how the hashtag was not the start of a movement with marches and speeches, but rather a groundswell of participation to give people a sense of “the magnitude of the problem.”

At last count, the hashtag had been used 1.7 million times in 85 different countries.

It is frustrating that it is 2017 and we are still dealing with how consent works.

We are still dealing with the fact that when a person says no, some people think that’s debatable.

Everyone who came forward with #MeToo did a courageous thing. It is not easy talk about being sexually assaulted or harassed.

This is not a big-city problem.

The amount of sexual assault in the Humboldt area has increased 153 per cent over the past year, according to PARTNERS Family Services Executive Director Hayley Kennedy. However, she noted she does not know whether that is because survivors are more comfortable coming forward now, or because there has been an increase in sexual assault.

The organization serves Humboldt and rural communities within a 100 kilometre radius around the city, and Kennedy says rates in rural areas can be higher even than Saskatchewan cities.

Sexual assault and harassment cases can seem to have grey areas, especially when the evidence comes down to one party’s word against another.

However, even in cases that have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, we are still victimizing survivors.

Take a case before the Quebec courts just last week. As reported in the Globe and Mail on Oct. 25, the judge in that case noted that the teenaged sexual-assault victim had a pretty face, was a little overweight and speculated that she might have

been flattered by the accused’s attention.

The accused was found guilty of kissing, touching and licking the 17-year-old while she was in his taxicab.

In a famous case in California last year, Brock Turner bragged on social media about raping a woman behind a dumpster. Even with two witnesses to the crime, he served three months in jail.

This despite minimum sentencing in California of two years for sexual assault.

To make matters worse, major media outlets spent air time lamenting about the loss of his swimming career.

According to Statistics Canada, sexual assault is the most underreported violent crime in Canada, with 636,000 self-reported sexual assaults in 2014 and only 117,238 reported to police in 2014.

How does anyone see any of this as okay?

How do these kinds of stories encourage victims to come forward?

With stories like this littering our feeds, how does this improve anything for survivors?

People need to stand up and say it is not okay.

That is what #MeToo is doing.

It was night two of six as the five Saskatchewan Party leadership candidates met in Melfort to debate policy, the economy, and support for the Quill Lakes.

Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Ken Cheveldayoff, Alanna Koch, Scott Moe and Gord Wyant will meet in six election debates over the next three months leading up to the Saskatchewan Party leadership election on Jan. 27, 2018.

No matter the topic for discussion, candidates kept it cordial. There were 10 member-chosen questions with 60 seconds each to respond.

Building a winning coalition Wyant kicked off the Oct. 26 debate with speaking on what is needed in a leader. The most important thing is to maintain party unity so the Saskatchewan Party can defeat the Saskatchewan New Democrats in the 2020 election. “We need a Saskatchewan Party leader who can keep the coalition strong, keep the tent open, and keep the base broad. That’s how we defeated the NDP in three consecutive elections.�

That same sentiment was echoed throughout the night, with many members touching on the importance of winning seats, especially in urban areas.

Beaudry-Mellor spoke during her closing remarks about urban voter turnouts in both the Saskatoon Fairview and Saskatoon Meewasin by-elections, saying that some of those voters are choosing to stay home. That momentum has to be turned around, she said. “Some of that is maintaining those dual values of economic growth and quality of life issues that our party has been known for.�

Keeping the coalition of conservative and liberals that make up the party together was a question onto itself, with the importance of party identity coming up during the member questions.

The four Liberal and four Progressive Conservative MLAs who formed the Saskatchewan Party had a lot of courage, said Cheveldayoff, and that is what the party needs going forward. “(The party needs) courage to make the difficult decisions but also in a way that’s welcoming to people across the political spectrum.�

Municipal infrastructure The NDP government of 2003 is not something the Saskatchewan Party wants to see again, especially when it comes to municipal funding gaps, said Koch.

accomplishing. “This is a challenge for us to make sure we have adequate funds to invest in infrastructure but it’s key for the growth and prosperity of the province.�

Municipal funding gaps for infrastructure spending in small urban municipalities is a constant theme in regional Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) meetings, said Wyant. There are innovative ways of providing funding, he said, but that will take a working dialogue with SUMA, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities and the federal government. “Innovative ways of funding infrastructure is important and we need to continue to pursue that.�

Quill Lakes Spending and decisions have to be made according to the candidates regarding the Quill Lakes water levels. And while the solutions have to be scientifically based, the province needs to act on a solution for the water levels.

Water management is creating challenges across the province and while it is not a unique issue, said Moe, it is a unique issue in the scope of the problem. “I applaud the Quill Lakes Watershed committee for the effort that they’ve done in coming up with a number of projects that have been submitted and now it’s time for the Water Security Agency to wrap some science around those and make a science-based decision.�

Winning in urban and rural areas In several closing remarks, candidates spoke of the importance of winning urban seats to win the 2020 election, especially with the NDP seats that have been won in the recent by-elections.

While the party may have deep rural roots with farms, towns and villages being the backbone of Saskatchewan, winning in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw are going to be the key to a Saskatchewan Party win in the next election, said Cheveldayoff. “We must be urban strong, we must work together,� he said during his closing remarks.

Speaking with reporters after the debate, she does not see the same split between urban and rural issues, said Koch, “I see Saskatchewan people as the same. We’ve got the same values, the same things matter to us; families, jobs, strong economy, a great quality of life, and I really don’t see that difference.�

candidates during questions regarding economy and agriculture production transportation.

Freeing up rail lines and getting oil into pipelines was an important message for Moe, since Saskatchewan leads the country in agriculture exports, especially with the doubling in exports since 2007. “We need those pipelines to be approved so we can free up our rail service and our rail capacity for the potash, grain, and agricultural products that we want to put on that rail.�

Beaudry-Mellor said that the loss of Energy East would have improved rail conditions for moving other commodities, however not all is lost with agricultural stakeholders not seeing this as an issue. “You heard of their need for continuing research, that there’s institutional support in having competitiveness, we heard better communication and public trust, and the maximization of research funding.�

Leadership debates continue with the Saskatchewan Party convention debate in Saskatoon on Nov. 4.

High-ranking members’ thoughts Two people that will be following the debates rather closely is James Thornsteinson, the party president and June Draude, one of the Saskatchewan Party’s founders.

The Quill Lakes are having an impact in the area and Thornsteinson said people in the audience were happy to hear that question asked. “It was good for them to hear what each candidate had to say about it,� he said. “It affects people in this region specifically.�

Draude, the former MLA for Kelvington-Wadena, is excited to see the result of the election with five strong candidates ready to be put to task.

Twenty years later, the candidates are still dreaming the same dream that the party was founded on, said Draude. “I look at these people and think they represent the depth and breadth of the province.�

Leafs shine, Habs struggle in wacky NHL start

Early surprises from the 2017-18 National Hockey League season, with the first one about the best player in the league, Connor McDavid.

— Why hasn’t McDavid been filling the net? After scoring three goals in his first game, leading veteran Jaromir Jagr of the Flames to say McDavid was too talented to stop and could score 100 or 150 goals in a season, the 20-year-old reigning MVP proceeded to go five games without a goal. Is he all skate, all flash, no score?

— Can it be possible that the Toronto Maple Leafs are, indeed, the best team in the league? Las Vegas oddsmakers, after coach Mike Babcock’s team went 6-1-0 in its first seven games, pegged the team formerly known as the Maple Laffs as the odds-on favourite to win the Stanley Cup. Hey, why not? Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip passed away and he wrote the song “50 Mission Cap,” which references the Leafs and their Cup victory in 1962, so maybe

there’s karma at play here.

— Can it be possible that the Montreal Canadiens are the worst team in the NHL? Wow, through eight games, the Habs had scored a grand total of 13 goals and had only one victory to their credit, a fortunate shootout win over woeful Buffalo. It’s Montreal’s worst start after eight games since 1941. Carey Price may or may not be the best goalie in the league (he used to be, that’s for sure) but if he’s not at his absolute stand-onhis-head best on a particular night, the offence-challenged Habs seem to have little or no chance to win.

— When Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1981-82, it was a mind-boggling total most fans thought would never be topped. So here we are in 2017-18, coming off a season when 44 goals (by Sidney Crosby) was the league’s best, and two Russians, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s Nikita Kucherov each had 10 goals in their first nine games — a 91-goal pace.

Herbicide debate could prove costly for farmers

Calvin Daniels A key tool that farmers have been using for years may be forced out of the ‘farm toolbox’.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) came out some time ago suggesting the widely used agricultural herbicide glyphosate may cause cancer in humans.

The report started a

shock wave of response, most of it negative toward the herbicide. Consumers have voiced concerns and those concerns have fostered court challenges and governmental reviews.

The reaction is not good news for farmers who have been using the herbicide as a key weed control tool for decades.

Glyphosate is a broadspectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant.

It is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops.

It was discovered to be a herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970.

Monsanto brought it to market in 1974 under the trade name Roundup.

The farmer pick-up of the product was widespread because it was found to be an effective tool in the battle to control in-crop weeds which can impact production through competition with the crops.

In 2007, glyphosate was the most used herbicide in the United States’ agricultural sector and the second-most used in home and garden (2,4-D being the most used), government, industry, and commerce, according to Wikipedia.

By 2016 there was a 100-fold increase from the late 1970s in the frequency of applications and volumes of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) applied.

farm tool with the development of glyphosate resistant crops, which have been rapidly adopted in soybean, maize, cotton, canola, and sugarbeet in large part because of the economic advantage of the technology. Such crops allow for use of glyphosate as a weed control method.

But the IARC report has certainly started processes which could push farmers away from using glyphosate.

As recently as last week the U.S. Right to Know website reported more than 265 lawsuits pending against Monsanto Co. in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, filed by people alleging that exposure to Roundup herbicide caused

them or their loved ones to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto covered up the risks.

And European Union countries failed last week to vote on a licence extension for glyphosate. The current licence expires at the end of the year.

The EU did pass an 18-month extension in June 2016 pending further scientific study.

“That research came in the form of a European Chemical Agency conclusion in March that there was no evidence to link glyphosate to cancer in humans,” reported www.reuters.com “It was the same conclusion as that of the European Food Safety Agency and of regulatory bodies of

No doubt the delays relate to the European Parliament calling for the product to be phased out in the next five years.

Muddying the waters even more is another Reuters storyline which suggests the IARC report may not have had all the data, including that suggesting glyphosate was not a cause of cancer, when it made its decision.

Sadly, even if the IARC report is found flawed, the damage done may not be repairable, as consumers and governments are clearly looking for bans and the machinations to achieve that will not be easily stopped.

Communities can celebrate local businesses Owning a business is the goal of many would-be entrepreneurs. Being your own boss has certain perks, including making your own hours and not having to report to anyone but yourself.

But owning a business is a lot of work, especially for new business owners trying to get their businesses off the ground. According to Bloomberg, eight out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within 18 months

A respected member of the community who shares a good experience with a local business may propel others to patronize the business. Speak up when you feel a business owner has provided an exceptional level of service. Recommend a company to friends and neighbors.

Middle Lake wins gold, silver at provincials; Lake Lenore brings home silver

Local soccer teams made up a small percentage of provincial entrants but they made good use of their trip, as all three entrants brought home provincial medals.

1A Boys It was an excellent provincial championship for a pair of local schools as the Middle Lake Avengers brought home the provincial title, while the Lake Lenore Lancers brought home the provincial silver.

The Avengers entered the tournament as the top seed and were matched up against Sakewew in the first round.

Offense was not a problem for the Avengers in their quarterfinal matchup as they piled up 11 goals en route to an 11-1 win.

The win moved the Avengers into the provincial semi-final where they took on Rosthern Jr. College.

Looking to one up themselves the Avengers came out flying, as they dominated Rosthern en route to a 15-1 destruction.

The Lancers meanwhile, came into provincials as the tournament’s second seed and were matched up against Moose Jaw Vanier in the first round.

Much like their Avenger counterparts, the Lancers flexed their offensive muscle in their provincial quarterfinal as they routed Moose Jaw Vanier 7-0.

With the win the Lancers moved into the provincial semi-final, where they took on third seed Constable Robin Cameron out of Beardy’s First Nation.

After rolling through their quarterfinal, the Lancers’ semi-final was a nail biter, with the Lancers eventually pulling out a 4-3 win.

The win set up a grid 777 rivalry contest between the Lancers and Avengers, and was a rematch of their regional final from the week prior, won by the

Avengers.

The final was a tight defensive contest between two teams that knew each other very well.

Neither team managed many solid scoring chances in the first half, and the game went into halftime tied at 0.

The Avengers came out strong in the second half and were rewarded quickly as they scored just minutes into the second half.

After neither team was able to score through much of the second half, the Avengers put the game away late scoring off a corner kick to take a 2-0 lead.

That lead would hold up as the Lancers pushed for a goal but not find one as the Avengers emerged provincial champion after a 2-0 win.

The win capped off a solid season for the Avengers who lost just once in league play, in the district final.

The Lancers meanwhile, also enjoyed a solid season that saw them finish second at both the regional and provincial championships.

1A Girls In 1A Girls action, the lone local entrant were the Middle Lake Avengers, who brought home a provincial silver medal.

The Avengers came into provincials as the tourna-

ment’s third seed and opened up against sixth seeded Dalmeny.

The Avengers put forth an excellent effort on both sides of the ball and rolled to a dominant 6-0 win, sending the Avengers into the semi-finals against second seeded Waldheim.

Despite coming into the contest as the lower seed, the Avengers refused to back down and were rewarded as they knocked off Waldheim 3-1.

The win moved the Avengers into the final, where they got a rematch with Warman.

After losing to Warman in the regional finals a week earlier, the Avengers set out to flip the script, but were unable to do so as top seeded Warman knocked off the Avengers 3-0 in the final.

The loss left the Avengers as the provincial silver medalists capping off a second of seconds, as they finished second in the district championships, second at regionals, and second at provincials.

With provincials now complete, the soccer season comes to a close, as athletes will now turn their attention to the rest of the volleyball season, and the start of the basketball season.

The success of last year’s event meant a repeat for the St. Brieux Fire Department as they hosted their second annual Fireman’s Ball on Oct. 21.

The night included a silent auction and supper. Around 120 people came to the event, says Fire Chief Lee Brockman.

Brockman says the department has outgrown their current fire hall so they have officially started fundraising for a new building with all ball funds going to that cause.

There has been some fluctuation in the past year but the St. Brieux Fire Department is still sitting around 18 members which is where they usually are, says Brockman.

Four of these members were honoured by the department, Dylan Theis as a 10 year service member and three will receive a special award care of the Government of Canada. Randy ven der Buhs, Dan Hunt, Bob Coquet

will receive the Governor Generals Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal for their 20 years of service.

According to the Governor General’s website, the medal, “honours members of a recognized Canadian fire service who have completed 20 years of service, ten years of which have been served in the performance of duties involving potential risks, and were employed on or after the date of creation of the Medal...Exemplary service is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.”

Brockman says the department will award the medals on a later date since they have yet to arrive from the government.

While it is pretty special to have such members on their team willing to put in the years of service, there is a more important reason that these men are being honoured, says Brockman.

“These 3 gentlemen after all those years are still enthusiastic members.”

High school football playoffs are here, and it was a bit of a rough week for a number of local teams.

6-Man 1A Playoffs In a battle of local schools it was the Raymore Rebels who knocked off the Viscount Vikings 80-42 in the provincial quarterfinals on Oct. 28 in Raymore.

The win keeps the Rebels’ perfect season alive and moves them into the provincial semi-final where they will play host to the Plenty Wildcats on Nov. 4.

The matchup between the Rebels and the Wildcats will see two high scoring offenses do battle as they combined for nearly 800 points in seven games each.

The Rebels put their undefeated record on the line against a Wildcats team who has won four straight and six of seven overall.

The Vikings meanwhile, will turn their attention to next season, as the loss brings their 2017 football season to a close.

2A Playoffs It was a busy weekend for local 2A football teams with three teams playing in three of four playoff

games.

It was a tough trip to provincials for the Watrous Wildcats as they fell 59-32 to Clavet on Oct. 28 in Clavet.

The loss brings to an end a solid season for the Wildcats, as they will now turn their attention to the 2018 season.

Joining the Wildcats in planning for 2018 is the Wynyard Golden Bears after they lost their first game of the season 68-52 against Dalmeny at home on Oct. 28.

The lone local 2A football winner was the Wakaw Warriors, who knocked off the Creighton Blue Jays 77-44 on Oct. 28 at home.

The win kept the Warriors’ perfect season alive, pushing their winning streak to seven games.

The Warriors enjoy some home cooking in the provincial semi-final as they welcome Dalmeny to town.

Dalmeny comes into the matchup fresh off their aforementioned upset win over Wynyard.

It will be another battle of high scoring clubs as the two teams combined for over 650 points during the regular season.

The Warriors will put their undefeated season on the line when they welcome 6-1 Dalmeny to town on Nov. 4.

Farming associations meet in Ottawa to discuss high impact issues

Agricultural partners from across Canada were in Ottawa for the Canadian Federation of Agricultures board meeting and Lobby Day on Parliament Hill on Oct.23-24.

Associations and agriculture councils from coast to coast, including President Todd Lewis, and Vice-Presidents Norm Hall and Ian Boxall of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan were a part of 40 meetings with MPs from all federal parties to discuss issues within the agriculture sector.

The federation has been holding their fall board meeting and lobby days for the past 10 years to ensure this dialogue with the federal government.

Being new to the federation lobbying and meeting with government, Boxall says that everyone that they spoke to was receptive to discussing agricultural issues, from the Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay to agriculture critics in the opposition, including John Barlow who was very engaged, says Boxall.

“That’s a worry going in is how receptive these MPs will be to what we’re asking.”

Understanding was a big part of what Boxall wanted MPs to take from the lobby day, especially with agriculture being one of the six pillars from the 2017 budget.

“We can be one of the economic drivers in this country as long as we have good policy to get us there.”

Two important issues were on the docket; North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and federal taxation changes for small business.

Canadian Federation President, Ron Bonnett, says both issues are having considerable impacts on farmers across the country.

Producers work hard to take advantage of incoming sharing rules and succession planning, says Bonnett, and taxation changes are going to drastically change how farmers plan to keep family farms within the family.

“We along with a number of other organizations commissioned a study to really do some analysis of it and had Meyers Norris Penny, the accounting firm, did that analysis. It confirmed what we suspected, that there would be a heavy hit.”

While changes were made the week before the scheduled federation lobby day, Bonnett says they were able to applaud the governments decision to adjust the tax changes while also reminding them that they want to be involved in the changes.

“We really want to be engaged in the details of developing the specific rules around things like income sharing and also taking a look at the whole succession planning issue.”

The federation did applaud government officials in a press release after announcing changes to the taxation regulations.

Bonnett said in the press release that “plans to limit the lifetime capital gains exemption and options to convert income to capital gains...would have led to enormous complexity and added costs for inter-generational farm transfers and could’ve even encouraged farmers to sell their businesses to nonfamily members.”

The devils in the details, says Bonnett and that is what they are going to be watching in the next several weeks as the federal government brings forth new taxation changes.

Bonnett says everything has to be spelled out so that farmers know that their concerns are being addressed.

Two issues that they do not have an-

swers on yet is income sprinkling and passive investment, says Boxall.

Come harvest time, it is every member of the family on deck but it may have come down to a complex number of people on deck receiving income sprinkling benefits which may have complicated matters, says Boxall.

Negotiations around NAFTA will be entering the fifth round in Mexico City in the third week in November and discussion regarding possible changes are making Bonnett and other organizations nervous.

“On the agriculture side, there’s always supply management and how they’re going to treat it and some of the announcements in Washington lays out a path that basically destroys supply management.”

This is not the only concerning aspect, says Bonnett, as the Sunset Clause proposed by the United States is also putting Canadian organizations on edge.

The clause allows members to pull out of NAFTA if they are not liking what has been going on after the first five years. That does not build a lot to inspire confidence for someone investing in NAFTA related deals involving businesses from Canada, United States, or Mexico, says Bonnett.

Many issues are non-starter issues which could cause problems later for Canada, including dispute settlement rules, which has the possibility of going to the United States court system.

“That, in our minds, is very one sided and unacceptable,” says Bonnett.

Considering the problems that have plagued Canadian and Mexican negotiators, no deal would be better at this point than the deal that is being proposed, he says.

While there seem to be doom and gloom coming out of the negotiations,

Bonnett says Canadian organizations are getting traction by talking with farmers from other countries and joining the discussion at that level.

The messages they are getting from the United States farmer organizations is that they recognize the importance of the NAFTA and getting congress more engaged in discussion around NAFTA is going to change the game.

“Even if President Trump decides to pull out, I think there will be a little bit of a fight between him and congress as to whether he has the authority.”

At this point, what the federation is doing with the Canadian government, American and Mexican organizations are doing with their own as well, says Bonnett.

The federation has already met with the American Farm Bureau and the Consejo Nacional Agropecuario (National Agricultrual Council) the largest farm organization in Mexico and together have put a joint statement forward describing what they would like to see in the agreement, a number of them ways they could improve the movement of goods back and forth, says Bonnett.

“The idea is for each group to keep pressure on negotiators in their own individual countries to make sure they don’t put some things in place to undermine (the deal).”

While there was very little mention of access issues, there is always going to be these issues up for discussion.

Even so, in the agricultural sector, trade has worked really well between the three major trading partners, Bonnett says the message now to negotiators in all three countries; ”it’s working well, don’t screw it up.”

That was the message Boxall got from speaking with other partners in lobbying was this no harm to agricultural based trades.

Nobody is above the law should mean just that

All too often you hear the saying, “nobody is above the law” except this weekend we found out that is not entirely true.

This weekend we saw a situation where Houston Astro Yuli Gurriel saw suspension but not right away because his team was in the World Series.

Let’s rewind a little bit.

Gurriel’s Astros are taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, and during game three of the World Series Gurriel hit a home run off of Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish.

After returning to the dugout Gurriel was caught making a racist gesture towards the Japanese pitcher.

Of course after the game there was a considerable amount of backlash towards Gurriel for the incident.

And the next day he was rightfully suspended for those actions.

But here’s the kicker.

That suspension, which was set at five games will not be initiated until the beginning of the next season making him eligible to continue playing in the World Series.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred then came out and explained his decision.

Manfred gave four key reasons for his decision, the first was that it was important that the suspension carry a loss in salary, which can only happen during the regular season.

While I understand the need to take some money away from him, I think the idea of losing out on the opportunity to play in the World Series, which could be his only chance would be far devastating to a player than losing five games pay.

The second reason was that it would not be fair to the other 24 players on his team.

Pardon?

Maybe it would not be, but that is not anyone’s fault but Gurriel’s.

Should we not be saying, well you should not have put yourself and your teammates in this position?

Part of life is that we have to deal with the challenges presented to us.

It is not fair to us when things happen in our job, but

we just learn to deal with it.

And what about the Dodgers?

It is not really fair to them that a player, who should be suspended, is helping the Astros beat the Dodgers.

Of all four reasons for why his suspension should be pushed back, this to me is the most outrageous.

Manfred then explained that the third reason was that Darvish, was just looking to move past the issue.

So? How often in life does something happen to us where we are like I just want to move forward, yet there still needs to be punishment.

I understand that there was punishment dished out but it will be dished out in the future.

Finally, the last reason commissioner Manfred gave was that Gurriel would be given the opportunity to appeal.

Okay fine.

But should we just not put ourselves in that position?

Should we not just say you are suspended effective immediately, not, well I know you are going to appeal so we can wait until later to suspend you?

Nobody is above the law.

Unless of course it is at the right time.

Then we can wait until later to actually punish you.

This thinking needs to change.

If you deserve to be punished for something you should be punished for it, regardless of what is happening at the time.

BROCKMAN: Arnold “Arnie�

Sept. 7, 1037 - Oct. 21, 2017 Arnold “Arnie� Brockman, 80 years, passed suddenly on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in the Humboldt District Hospital. He was raised on the family farm near Humboldt, attended St. Augustine School to Grade 8 and completed his high school education at St. Peter’s College, Muenster.

His parents Henry and Agnes (nee Gieselman) Brockman were progressive and idealistic role models who instilled a strong work ethic and patterned the value of life long learning. In his youth Arnie and his father built and operated a snow plane, which forged a passion for aviation as a future career, however an accident in his youth caused the loss of vision in one eye. A physical limitation did not restrain his resolve.

Arnie’s passion for the skies was fulfilled when he attained his private pilot’s license and enjoyed his air coupe and Cessna 172. He shared his joy of flying with others as an instrumental figure in the establishment of the Humboldt Airport. Arnie met Patricia Sarich (a local teacher) at the home of Bertha and Dan Pavelick (special aunt and uncle) in Humboldt. Arnie and Pat married on July 16, 1960. They had three children: Jason (Jay), Janelle (deceased), and Camille. In 1955, when Arnie was 18, he started Brockman Service Ltd., a machine shop and fabrication business. This first business set the foundation for what produced several of Arnie’s innovations both professionally and for the community. In response to a growing potash industry, Arnie’s design and production endeavours focussed on soft rock mining that eventually expanded into a design and consulting practice. Ore-Site Systems was founded in 1989 to specialize in technical advisory and cutting head design that optimized ore extraction. He was known in industry and the community as the “go to’ guy when a problem couldn’t be resolved. Through the years, Arnie was consistently involved in his community and volunteered for his children’s activities. He was a Town Councillor for over a decade, long term member of the Humboldt Junior Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Waldsea Lake Park Board, and President of the Humboldt Broncos, a hockey coach and volunteer at numerous Humboldt Speed Swim meets, and many other local projects. In Arnie’s later years, he shared a love of gardening fostered by his mother Agnes. Arnie’s evolutionary gardens were monumental. It boasted rows of gladiolas frequently donated to the church, and hundreds of hills of potatoes. He experimented with new varieties and, ever the innovator, devised several gardening efficiencies including automated tree, potato and gladiola planters. As a cancer survivor of 16 years, he offered counsel to numerous bladder cancer patients.

His generosity was fuelled by a strong faith, high moral standards and unassuming authenticity. He had an intrinsic standard of excellence in his work encouraging others to follow that principal and remain steadfast in times of adversity. Although a quiet and humble man, those who knew him best, knew the strength of his character and were impacted by his example. Arnie’s immediate family, friends and colleagues are forever touched by his passion for life. Family was foremost: wife Pat (nee Sarich) Brockman of Humboldt (married 57 years); their two children and three grandchildren: Jay (Rachelle) Brockman and children Elizabeth and Maria of Saskatoon and Camille (Lorne) Jensen and daughter Sappho of Calgary; two sisters and one brother: Lois Brockman of Winnipeg, Irvin (Lorraine) Brockman of Harrisburg, PA, and Jeanne (Keith) Laxdal of Regina; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Agnes (nee Gieselman) Brockman and infant daughter, Janelle Brockman. The Funeral Mass was offered on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt celebrated by Archbishop James Weisgerber and co-celebrated by Fr. Joseph Salihu. Interment followed in the St. Augustine Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations in Arnold’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation, St. Elizabeth’s Ladies Auxiliary Centennial Cardiac Endowment or David Ronald Bell Cardiac Endowment Fund. STILL: Irma Valentina Jan. 27, 1925 - Sept. 28, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irma Valentina (nee Langen) Still of Humboldt, SK, at St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, on Thursday, September 28, 2017. She was 92 years of age. Born on January 27, 1925 at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital in Humboldt, SK, Irma was the fifth of sixteen children born to Joseph August and Hedwig (nee Hogg) Langen.

Irma and her siblings were raised in Lake Lenore where her father worked as a grain buyer. Irma completed her education at the Ursuline Academy in Bruno in 1944 and immediately began working as a legal secretary at the office of Sutherland and Saddlemyer in Humboldt.

When Mr. Saddlemyer retired in 1970, Irma became the Assistant Secretary-Treasurer at the Humboldt School Unit and continued working there until her retirement in 1984. Irma was a talented piano player who played without sheet music and could hear a song the first time and play it flawlessly. She met a young man named Leonard who added an extra sparkle to an already talented family of mostly female musicians by convincing Irma to marry him, and make music. Irma married Leonard Virgil Still on March 29, 1948 at St. Augustine R.C. Church, in Humboldt. Irma and Leonard enjoyed entertaining family who fondly remember her playing piano, singing up a storm, and laughing. Irma was an avid reader and, as her competitors can attest, a fierce Scrabble player. She also maintained a keen interest in politics, sparked by her time working with the local Returning Office during the historic 1944 provincial election. In retirement, Irma kept busy by bowling, belonging to the Guardian Angels and C.W.L., and meeting with her Ladies’ Night Out friends regularly. A highlight of Irma’s retirement was her trip to Germany to visit her Hogg cousins and the villages and towns of her ancestors. Irma leaves to mourn her four children, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild: Thomas Still of Humboldt, SK; Douglas (Donelda) Still of Regina, SK, and family, Andrea Still and her children Henry and Carl, and Sarah Still (Chris Gunningham) and their children Freyja and Callum; Harvey (Ruth) Still of Rusagonis, NB, and family, Carolyn (Rob Gibson) and Michael Still (Robin Turner), and Harvey’s daughters, Kathleen Chow (fiance Jason Kuntz) and her children Darence Chow, Marissa, Klaudia, Jaxon, and Lakin Robinson, and Christine (Alex Lacharite) and her children Bradley Melanson and his son Abel, and Emily Melanson; and Emily (Terry Rohrke) of Humboldt, SK, and family Kurtis Rohrke (Jessica) and their daughter Brooklyn, and Lindsay Rohrke. Obituaries SARAUER: Richard Martin Oct. 15, 1925 - Oct. 20, 2017 With family by his side, our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Richard Sarauer, passed away peacefully at his residence, St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, on Friday, October 20, 2017, at the age of 92. Richard was born on October 15, 1925, to John and Mary (nee Braun) Sarauer on the family farm at Annaheim, SK, where he continued to live and farm for 69 years. On October 2, 1950, he married Valerie Ramler and together they raised a family of seven children. In 1994, Richard and Valerie retired to Humboldt. In January of 2012, Richard suffered a third, more debilitating stroke which made it necessary for him to move to extended care. Initially, he resided at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson, SK, and within a year, he was moved to St. Mary’s Villa, where he spent his final years. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., presided by Fr. Michael Yaremko. Others taking part were: Trevor Sarauer, crossbearer; Jill Jenkins and Sierra Sarauer, scripture readers; Kristin Logan and Michael Silzer, intentions; Richard’s children, giftbearers; Annette Magus and Cindy Ramler, memorial table attendants; Allan Rumberger and Wayne Berscheid, eulogists. Music ministry was provided by director Loretta Schugmann, organist Marie Aubin, and members of the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. An honor guard was formed by members of the Knights of Columbus. Honorary pallbearers were Richard’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Lindsay Sayese, Brian Rumberger, Sherri Pronych, Erin Perrot, Savanna Sarauer, and Dustin Sarauer. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery. Wolfgang Thiem, OSB, of St. Peter’s Abbey, Muenster, SK, passed away at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. He was 93 years of age.

Br. Wolfgang was born to Josef and Maria (nee Weinhoeppel) Thiem on April 28, 1924, in Schwab Gmund, Germany. The Second World War was devastating Europe when he graduated from high school. At the age of 18 he was drafted into the air force and then transferred to an anti-aircraft unit in Germany. At the end of the war, he was taken prisoner by the Americans on Christmas Eve in 1945. He then spent three-and-a-half years as a Prisoner of War working on a farm in France. Br. Wolfgang came to Canada in 1953, where he joined Voluntas Dei, a secular institute founded by an Oblate priest in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. In 1971, he spent a few months at the Trappist monastery in Manitoba, and then decided to visit St. Peter’s Abbey. Br. Wolfgang entered the novitiate and made his profession of vows on March 21, 1973. His talents kept him busy in carpentry, masonry and gardening. He was known for the tomatoes he grew in his greenhouse. During his final years, Br. Wolfgang grew sunflowers and harvested the seeds to feed the chickadees in the winter. His favourite winter pastime was cross-country skiing. He also enjoyed listening to international news and reading about news events on his computer. Br. Wolfgang is survived by the Benedictine Monastic Community of St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster. He was predeceased by his parents, Josef and Maria (nee Weinhoeppel) Thiem; and by three sisters: Friedel, Annemie, and Trudi. The Prayer Service was held on Monday, October 23, 2017, at 7:30 p.m., at Saints Peter and Paul R.C. Church at St. Peter’s Abbey Muenster officiated by Br. Basil Schaan, OSB. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., presided by Abbot Peter Novecosky, OSB. Pallbearers were Br. NIENABER: Joseph John Mar. 7, 1934 - Oct. 21, 2017 Joseph “Joe� Nienaber of Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of Annaheim and Muenster, SK), passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. He was 83 years old. Joe was born on March 7, 1934, to Henry and Maria (nee Niekamp) Nienaber at home on the Nienaber farm between Annaheim and St. Gregor, where he was also raised. He attended Harvest School and used his schooling to help his German-speaking parents learn English. After his school years, Joe worked for numerous farmers, as well as Doepker’s hauling livestock. In 1956, he went to work for Frances Kimmen to help with the family farm after the death of her husband. In later years, Frances’ son, Donn, joined in the farming, and more land and livestock were purchased. After Frances retired and moved to Muenster in 1980, Joe and Donn started their life-long partnership in Kimber Farm.

Joe loved sports, especially hockey, baseball, football, and golf.

He even got a hole in one once! He often said, “I have golf clubs, and I like playing golf, but I buy the wrong golf balls. They like to be near trees and long grass�. Joe, like most Saskatchewanians, had a love/hate relationship with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

For many years he regularly attended Rider games in Regina with friends. When unable to attend, he watched the games faithfully on TV. Also like most Saskatchewanians, from time to time he was known to yell at the TV or call the next play from the comfort of his armchair. Joe loved to remain active. This, along with his love of hockey, led him to the rink where he spent much of his time in the winter. He both coached and played hockey in Muenster, and when not actively participating in the sport, could often been seen in the stands as a spectator. Joe was also very active in his communities. He served on the boards of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Muenster Sports Club, and Muenster Credit Union as well as serving with the Annaheim Knights of Columbus and Muenster Elks. Joe also had an innate love of music, and sang with the Annaheim Men’s Choir for a time. In fact, the choir was so talented that the CBC heard of them and came to Annaheim to feature them on the air and record an album! His love of music continued throughout his life. He sang in the Annaheim church choir, and attended every Voices in Tyme concert where Maurina, Joanne, and Lesley Kimmen sang as part of the group. He was also known to stop what he was doing when a particularly lovely song came on the radio just to listen.

Joe was also known to tinker. He loved to fix things and figure out a problem. He was always willing to volunteer his skills to anyone in need of them. Those of you who knew Joe knows how he loved animals, especially dogs. Joe was always known to visit the Kimmen house, where there was always at least one dog present, with a container of dog treats necessary for the appropriate amount of canine bribery. Needless to say, the dogs also loved Joe! As most of you know, Joe’s family situation was unique. He had a big enough heart to accommodate being a member of two families;he was a Nienaber by blood and a Kimmen in spirit. After going to help Frances in 1956, Joe stayed and became an integral and much-loved part of the Kimmen family. In fact, the Kimmen kids were usually around 10 years old before they realised not every home had their very own Joe! Joe will be remembered most for his humble nature, his infectious smile, and great sense of humour. He will be lovingly remembered by his Kimmen family, Donn and Joyce Kimmen (nee Kunz) of Muenster, SK; their son Garry and his wife Tammy (nee Mueller) Kimmen and their children, Cassandra, Tristan, and Brooklyn of Lethbridge, AB; Donn and Joyce’s daughters, Maurina Kimmen of Humboldt, SK; Joanne Kimmen of Saskatoon, SK; and Lesley Kimmen of Moose Jaw, SK; Myrna (Robert) Clark and their daughter, Kimberly Clark, and sons Christopher and Gregory Clark, all of Calgary, AB. Wadena Action Group continues success with Health Auction

It was another successful year for the Wadena Health Action Group as they worked to bring the fifth annual Wadena Health Auction to town.

Over 300 people came to enjoy the evening and raise money for great causes within Wadena and area.

Combined there were 125 items on the auction block through live, silent, and dessert auctions throughout the evening with the highest bidded item going for $900.

Included in the evening were also many draws, games, raffles and a kids zone to entertain the littlest of guests and to ensure parents had a good time as well, says Kathy Christianson with the Health Action Group.

Nine members of the group as well as 75 volunteers made the day a success, however, they are yet to determine how much money was raised. Over $5,000 in financial donations were made during the fundraiser, says Christianson.

It was a busy night for Archerwill School on Oct. 19 as Cropper Motors came out for the school’s first Drive 4UR event.

Kellie Maslin from Archerwill School took on the project and was very happy with the success of the event.

Around 210 people showed up to the Drive 4UR community event while also taking in appetizers with the playschool to raise money for their program, a tradeshow with 20 local vendors, and a supper fundraiser to go towards the grade 8 and 9 Rockie Mountain trip.

Around 120 people came out for supper, which was great, says Maslin, since Archerwill only has about a 60 people population.

Funds will go to a few different needs of the school, including a recycling shed and improving the track and playground.

Especially in Archerwill with so many activities to go along with the Drive 4UR event, the test drives bring the community together, says Kehler.

“People came for the trade show, they came for the supper, they stood around and chatted while waiting for a vehicle...It seemed like people really wanted to come out and help the school.”

Vote to be held on Prairie North East Central Co-op merger

Members of the Melfortbased Prairie North Co-op and Kelvington-based East Central Co-op will vote on whether or not the two co-operatives should merge.

The two co-ops have been exploring the possibility of amalgamation for years. Under an agreement thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been around for almost four years, Prairie North has been helping manage East Central.

Randy Wassermann, Prairie Northâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general manager, said the merger is about becoming

more efficient and competitive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just feel that putting the two retails together will make us more efficient and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be able to work more closely together, buying better together, using our resources more efficiently,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping that by having a larger, more efficient retail with a larger balance sheet we are able to take advantage of growth opportunities.â&#x20AC;?

East Central has a food store, service centre, home centre and agro centre. Prairie North has multiple food

stores, gas bars, home centres and agro centres around Melfort and its immediate area.

Wassermann said the merger is about maintaining and improving services, not reducing them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the positions are secure. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no job loss related to an amalgamation and no losses of locations,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All services would remain intact.â&#x20AC;?

The general manager said the East Central facilities are in a strong position and that the merger isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about shoring up a weak co-op, but making both

stronger. Co-ops across the Federated Co-operatives Ltd. system have found theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had problems keeping rural locations fiscally sustainable as shoppers choose to travel to the larger towns and cities.

To merge, there will be a meeting in Kelvington Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Legion Hall where East Central members can vote on the proposal.

Two-thirds of members at the meeting must agree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a positive vote there, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll then have the Prairie North members vote as well,â&#x20AC;?

be able to vote at a meeting Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Melfortâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kerry Vickar Centre. Twothirds of those members at that meeting must also agree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If both sides are in agreement, then the amalgamation would take place Jan. 1, 2018.â&#x20AC;?

The general manager said members of both co-ops should attend the meetings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to come out and make your voice heard,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The decision affects the future of your co-operative, so we encourage everyone to come out and take part.â&#x20AC;?

Crop Report for the period of October 17 to 23 Harvest has all but wrapped up for producers in the province as 99 per cent of the crop is now combined, according to Saskatchewan Agricultureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Weekly Crop Report. There are still some crops such as flax, soybean and sunflower left to be combined. Harvest weather was favourable for much of the fall, allowing producers to pull off well above-average crop quality.

Although field conditions remained dry for the majority of the province, producers had fewer rain delays than in previous years and were able to take most crops off in relatively good condition.

There were also limited reports of diseases such as fusarium head blight impacting crop production this year. The majority of crops are being reported as falling within the top two quality grades. Crop yields vary greatly throughout the province, depending on seeding date and the amount of moisture received throughout the season.

Overall provincial yields are on par with the 10 year average, although some areas in the north are reporting higher than normal yields thanks to timely moisture. Yields in most southern and some central areas of the province were significantly affected by the extended period of hot and dry conditions this summer.

Average provincial yields at this time are reported

as 43 bushels per acre for hard red spring wheat, 34 bushels per acre for canola, 18 bushels per acre for soybeans, 63 bushels per acre for barley, 746 lbs per acre for mustard and 1,369 lbs per acre for lentils.

Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions remain a concern for much of the province. Very little moisture has been received in the last number of weeks and strong winds have further dried fields. The fire risk remains very high in southwestern areas and there have been many reports of grass and stubble fires in recent weeks. Significant moisture will be needed heading into winter to replenish what has been lost throughout the growing season. The majority of producers have indicated that the subsoil is very dry and that seeding conditions next spring will be impacted if moisture is not received.

Heading into winter, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 40 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 23 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 33 per cent very short.

Average hay yields on dry land are reported as 1.1 tons per acre for alfalfa and alfalfa/brome, 0.9 tons per acre for other tame hay, 1.0 ton per acre for wild hay and 1.6 tons per acre for greenfeed. On irrigated land, the estimated average hay yields are 3.0 tons per

acre for alfalfa and other tame hay, 2.0 tons per acre for alfalfa/brome and 3.5 tons per acre for greenfeed.

Hay quality going into winter is rated as 11 per cent excellent, 78 per cent good and 11 per cent fair.

At this time, most livestock producers have indicated that they will have adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain heading into winter.

However, producers in southern regions are reporting that many areas will have inadequate winter feed supplies and that shortages will be likely. The loss of feed supplies due to recent fires in the southwest has increased concern for producers in those areas.

With the drier than normal field conditions this fall, the number of acres seeded to winter cereals is below average in most areas. Rain was received in much of the province at the end of September, allowing for winter cereal crops to germinate and establish.

Thanks to the recent warm and dry weather, producers have been able to complete fall work such as putting down fertilizer, fixing fences, moving cattle, working fields, hauling bales and grain, picking rocks and cleaning up fields. Many producers, particularly in eastern regions, have been able to reclaim acres lost to flooding in previous years.

First quad rally hits Watson

Mud was flying and engines were roaring as the Watson and Region Optimist Club first annual Quad Rally on Oct. 28.

The quad rally was the first big fundraiser for the Optimist Club, which began operations in 2016, noted club president Annelies Huiting-Kupers.

The quad rally featured nearly 200 entries embarking on the 37 km trail, which was an overwhelming turnout, says Huiting-Kupers, especially considering it was the first year.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It makes me kind of speechlessâ&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very proud of my team.â&#x20AC;?

In addition, the rally also saw a tremendous amount of support from businesses who made donations to the rally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is overwhelming to see the support weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had for this quad rally,â&#x20AC;? noted Huiting-Kupers.

The quad rally was the first part of a trio of events going on throughout the day, with a dinner that evening, and a cabaret to follow.

program at Watson School, which is used by a number of the membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; kids and grandkids, and can always use extra money, notes Huiting-Kupers, who says the donation fits in perfectly with the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The optimist club is all about bringing out the best in our kids and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going for.â&#x20AC;?

The quad rally is a unique event for this area, with many communities electing to host snowmobile rallies in the winter, but Huiting-Kupers says she got the idea from Bruno, who has been hosting a quad rally for a number of years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our vice-president, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been to the quad rally a few times and Bruno is the closest one by so she was like

The rally was a perfect fit with the area as well, says Huiting-Kupers, who notes there are a lot of quad riders in the area.

Overall, Huiting-Kupers was pleased with how the quad rally turned out, noting that they were very lucky to get such nice weather. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have weather like this every year but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to say.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing more unpredictable than the weather.â&#x20AC;?

Looking ahead to next year, HuitingKupers says they have already begun planning, and says while they have yet to pick out a date, it will be held in October right after harvest, once again.

LeRoy honoured for arena rebuild Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association honoured the Town of LeRoy for their hard work in restoring their arena.

On Oct. 20, they accepted the Cecil Nobes Facility Award of Excellence for their efficient and accessible design to the facility. “We tried to keep the costs down as a lower cost construction balanced with trying to keep it low cost to operating,” says Kari Moore with the Raise the Roof committee, which worked tirelessly after a fire destroyed the arena in May 2013.

Henderson graces the stage in Watson

Watson got a taste of some roots country music on Oct. 29, as they hosted the Quill Plains Regional Arts Council’s (QPRAC) first Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) concert of 2017-2018, when they welcomed Chris Henderson to town.

Henderson was one of the QPRAC’s top choices after hearing him perform at the OSAC’s showcase, says Judy Schmid, who says he was a perfect fit for their audience, and was a “very good choice.”

Henderson wowed the crowd with a large majority of his show featuring his own music, but did weave in songs from other artists including the late Don Williams.

“We picked the songs that we felt worked best for the lineup of how we were presenting the show and then also selfishly I picked the songs with the stories I wanted to tell, too,” noted Henderson of his setlist selection.

Henderson played in front of a crowd of just under 150 people, and says he really enjoys playing shows for crowds that size.

“This is my favourite type of show to do. I don’t mind going into arenas and playing loud and being a party, too, but I really like telling the stories behind my songs and it helps people connect with the music a lot more.”

Seeing so many people in attendance was also really great to see for the arts council, says Schmid.

“Because we sell our tickets with the other three councils we never know exactly what kind of a turnout we’re going to get so it’s always good to see such a big crowd. For us 150 is excellent.”

Henderson was really pleased with how the show went, noting that he was pleased to see such a captive audience.

“I used to be a school teacher. This crowd listened better than any group of students I ever had,” he laughed.

“That makes our job a lot of fun

“These people were fantastic and anytime you have a respectful audience inside of enthusiastic, it’s very easy to play and it makes you want to come back in a heart beat.”

Liquor building up for sale The former Watson Liquor store building has been sold as part of the Saskatchewan government selling and privatization of liquor stores in the province. The building has been sold to Quill Creek Holdings for $100,000. Watson mayor, Norma Weber, says Watson has a few empty buildings on Main Street so it is always good for small towns to have buildings occupied. Food through football The Wynyard Golden Bears football team hosted their annual tackle hunger game on Oct. 22. The Golden Bears encouraged their peers to bring in donations for the Wynyard and District Food Bank during the week leading up to their 2A Conference final contest against Assiniboia. The Bears managed to knock off Assiniboia in a hard fought contest, but their biggest win came off the field where they raised 733 pounds of food and $300 for the food bank.
