Pilger spends Saturday in the Pumpkin patch

Another beautiful fall day meant for a successful Pilger Pumpkin Festival.

Organizer, Roman Bieringer, says it was a good turn out for this year with around 650 people stopping by the 65 population village to enjoy the day.

“We’re well pleased. Real nice day for it.”

As well as pumpkin themed food, decor and competitions, the event also included fireworks, horse and wagon rides, boucy castles, and wall climbing for the kids.

A wagon full of pumpkins from the village patch were also for sale during the day at a dollar per pumpkin.

Around 24 competitors rolled in their biggest pumpkins for the weigh in event with Doreen Dobrohoczki taking in the senior event with a 314 lb pumpkin monster and Wyatt Hoppe taking first in the junior category with a 142 lb pumpkin.

Jenna Pitka from Saskatoon won in the junior out of town category with 55.5 lb pumpkin.

CPR story rolls into local schools

The Canadian Pacific Railway connected British Columbia to the rest of Canada.

And this was a story that Allen Desnoyers wanted to bring to the students last week with a show in Wynyard and Englefeld on Sept. 26 and Watrous on Sept. 27.

As the writer, composer, and director, to name just a few of his job titles, Desnoyers wanted to bring the story to Canadian students as a way for them to get excited about a very Canadian story.

Along for the ride were fellow performers Ross Douglas and Henry Beasley who all split roles as the CPR history rolled across the stage, including Sir John A. MacDonald, Alexander McKenzie, Sandford Fleming, William Van Horne, and A.B. Rogers.

The project to connect the country from coast to coast took 10 years to get the rail line through the mountains and for every mile of track there were 4 dead workers.

While the history books focus on what happened, says Desnoyers, his story focuses on the people as they go through the process of completing the railway and wondering whether it will be worth the cost; both monetary and in human life.

During the time, the Canadians and Americans were in competition for British Columbia. Without the CPR to sweeten the deal, the large part of the country would be American.

Along the way, students got to meet many historical figures who were part of the CPR journey, including “(The students) get to come along for the journey of will this thing ever be built and what obstacles did they face and who was along for the ride.�

The fun and the challenge was making the story engaging with all age members, says Desnoyers.

While they want all members of the audience to be engaged, not every group of students is going to find the

Desnoyers says while the younger kids gravitate towards the schtick and more physical aspects of the musical, there is always some smart word play and historical humor that is caught by the older ones. “(They’ll) come away highly engaged and excited about this era and style of music and the story we tell.�

Canadian history has no shortage of stories and interesting people and Desnoyers has brought many stories to the small stage, from stories about the British invasion to stories of early explorers like William Bligh and Captain James Cook.

Each story has their own style with the CPR story having the blue-grass boogie-woogie style, which fits the

time of the railroad to the story of the British Invasion having a more rock n’ roll sound.

Englefeld School teacher, Jolene Gullacher, along with her students, were very impressed by the performance saying the music and storytelling made the lesson fun. “It was historically correct and really made the history lesson come alive.�

Crop report for the period of September 19 to 25 Wet and cool weather delayed harvest for most producers this past week, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seventy-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin, slightly up from 75 per cent last week. Harvest progress remains ahead of the five year (2012-2016) average of 74 per cent for this time of year. Fifteen per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Many producers expect to be back in the field when warmer weather returns and crops can dry sufficiently.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 92 per cent of the crop is now combined.

The southeastern region has 88 per cent combined, the west-central region 81 per cent and the eastcentral region 77 per cent. The northeastern region has 53 per cent combined, while the northwestern

region has 48 per cent combined.

Ninety-four per cent of mustard, 91 per cent of durum, 88 per cent of chickpeas, 84 per cent of barley, 77 per cent of spring wheat, 68 per cent of canola and oats, 66 per cent of canaryseed, 37 per cent of flax and 18 per cent of soybeans have now been combined.

Twenty-seven per cent of canola is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Although the rain was welcomed by many producers in the drier areas of the province, those in the central and northern areas need warm and dry weather soon so that harvest can resume. Rainfall this past week ranged from nil to 36 mm in the Debden and Hafford areas.

Topsoil moisture conditions continue to improve with the recent rainfall, although the subsoil will need significant new moisture to replenish what has been lost to the hot and dry weather. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 29 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and 35 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 22 per cent adequate, 34 per cent short and 44 per cent very short.

The extended period of hot and dry conditions this summer has negatively affected production, particularly in the southern and central regions. Canola crops suffered the most, as much of the crop was in full flowering during the hottest time of the season.

There are indications that yield has been reduced by as much as 75 per cent in some areas.

Soybean crops have been slow to mature and there are reports of pods not filling completely. Many lentil and cereal crops were unable to fill properly as they ran out of moisture much earlier than normal. Lighter bushel weights and smaller seeds have resulted. There are also reports of reduced protein content in cereal crops.

While yields have been directly affected by the extremely dry conditions, crop quality has been good to excellent with minimal disease issues.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to wildlife, strong winds, frost and lack of moisture. Pastures and hay land have suffered greatly from the lack of moisture and will need significant rainfall.

Producers are busy combining, completing fall field work, moving cattle and hauling bales.

SaskPower reports there were four reported incidents of farm machinery coming in contact with power equipment last week. The total number of incidents reported in September now sits at 21. Producers are urged to be especially careful when using equipment around power lines. Safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/safety.

It has been a long time coming for the Town of Wynyard but work is finally going forward on the new Recreation Complex, says Director of Leisure Services, Sigourney Hoytfox.

“We just signed on with a contractor and we’re hoping to break ground sometime this year for this new facility.”

With additional services going into the complex, Hoytfox says this is going to be more than just a recreation facility but will house the minor ball and golf course.

The current facility was built in 1953 so it does have some miles on it. When the engineers were brought in to have a look at the facility, Hoytfox says that they were told they only had a few years left before the building was unusable as an arena.

The process itself has taken six or seven years, says Hoytfox, so it is nice that they can finally announce they can start the work.

“We’re coming to the point where we can see some results from it,” says Hoytfox.

Mayor Albert Boylak actually made the announcement at their Brock Andrews fundraiser on Sept. 23 that they have signed a contractor and will be looking to begin construction before the end the year.

The Brock Andrews concert went really well and was a great fundraiser for the new building.

“He has his own music and he did some of that but he also did a lot of covers and took requests which is why I think people liked him so much.”

The energetic performance really brought people out to support the new recreation centre, says Hoytfox, with around 220 people coming for supper and

around 300 for the concert itself.

Hoytfox says the event raised around $17,000 to go towards the new complex with lots of sponsors and volunteers lending a hand in the fundraising efforts.

Many volunteers came from user groups who will be directly impacted by the new facility, but Hoytfox says there were many others from the community and local organizations that stepped up to lend a hand because they wanted to help.

“It’s a good thing to have in the community which is why I think they stepped up.”

The many who volunteered are no strangers to it and that made the event very easy for everyone, says Hoytfox.

While the arena has been talked about for many years, it has been great renewing the spark and getting the project going, says Hoytfox.

Lazers pick up first win of the season

The high school football regular season is entering the stretch drive and the playoff picture is beginning to become a little clearer.

6-Man 1A Conference 1 The Raymore Rebels continue to roll through their regular season schedule as they won their fourth straight game 60-8 over the Cupar Wildcats on Sept.

29 in Raymore.

The win moved the Rebels to 4-0 on the season, and moved them into sole possession of first place in the seventeam conference, two points clear of the Wildcats.

The Rebels will look to continue their winning ways when they welcome Kahkewistahaw to town on Oct. 5.

2A Conference 3 Watrous The Watrous Wildcats’ dream of an undefeated season came to an end on Sept. 29 as they fell 60-59 to the Wynyard Golden Bears on their home field.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 3-1 on the season, and leaves them in

sole possession of second place in the six-team conference, two points back of the Golden Bears.

The Wildcats will look to wrap up their regular season on a high note as they travel to Preeceville on Oct. 5 to take on the Panthers.

Wynyard The Golden Bears’ dominance in regular season high school football continues as their 60-59 win over the Watrous Wildcats was their 16th consecutive.

The win moves the Golden Bears to 4-0 on the season and leaves them standing alone on top of the six-team conference, two points clear of the Wildcats.

The Golden Bears will look to put a bow on their third consecutive undefeated regular season when they travel to Davidson to take on the Raiders on Oct. 5.

Lanigan The Lanigan Lazers picked up their first win of the season on Sept. 29 as they knocked off the Preeceville Panthers 22-18 in Lanigan.

Japan’s Otani set to make baseball history

You may not know much about the player one Major League Baseball executive has called “the best baseball player in the world.”

No, it’s not Mike Trout of the Angels, Bryce Harper of the Nationals or Jose Altuve of the Astros.

The player’s name is Shohei Otani, a clean-living, non-controversial Japanese superstar whose agent will take bids this winter for his North American services next year.

Otani is 23, a 6-foot-4, 189-pound left-handed slugger … and right-handed power pitcher. On the mound, he tops out at 102 MPH (but thinks he can get to 106 if he really works at it). He is a stud at both exercises, something not seen in the big leagues since Babe Ruth. You get the occasional pitcher whose batting average is close to .200, or, like Madison Bumgarner, hits six or seven homers a season, but Otani is different. He is among the best pitchers in the Japanese league (41-15 in five years, 2.73 ERA); and among the best hitters (22 homers in 104 games in 2016). He wants to do both in MLB next year, so an American League team would seem to be a logical landing point for him, where he could serve as designated hitter three days out of four, and pitch on the fourth. He might also be able to whip up breakfast for the team on off-days. Who knows?

The website Baseball America says “Nothing in the (collective bargaining agreement) prohibits a team from promising that they would allow Otani to hit and pitch. So Otani can choose to ensure he joins a team that is willing to let Japan’s Babe Ruth try his hand at hitting and pitching in the U.S.” If 25 to 35 Japanese media regularly follow every

move made by golf star Hideki Matsuyama, it’s mind boggling to imagine what sort of a media frenzy Otani would create suiting up for, say, the Yankees or Dodgers.

Because of Otani’s age, certain MLB signing limitations (contract value, bonuses, etc.) are in place. Were he to wait until he was 25, he would be completely free to sign with any MLB team for an unrestricted amount. Baseball America says if he comes this year — which he is apparently intent on doing — he will be sacrificing millions of dollars.

Young and foolish? Perhaps. Best baseball player in the world? North American fans can’t wait to see for themselves if the hype is real.

Plunkett news

By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent Harvesting is well underway.

Maisie Sutherland is in Watrous Hospital after having hip surgery at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Plunkett folks send their deepest sympathy to the family of Ellen Farago on her recent passing.

A memorial service will be on Oct. 7 at the DropIn Centre in Watrous, just two days before her

birthday, which would have been Oct. 9.

Stanley Giddings and Dennis Credgeur went elk hunting to Endeavour.

On Sept. 13 the Plunkett ladies birthday group held a birthday party for Judy Shoemaker.

There is not much news to write and Plunkett folks welcome any new folks who are moving to town.

It was interesting watching curling in Regina.

It seems that curling is earlier than it was before, but anyhow it is great to watch.

They have been getting terrible weather in the southern United States.

Ken and I visited Gary and Francis Grisdale from Porcupine Plain at Manitou Beach. They are Ken’s nephew and his wife and they were camping with the Good Sam’s at Manitou Beach.

Get well wishes to anyone ill and in the hospital.

Calvin Daniels It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise the potential of pulse crops on the Canadian Prairies appears to finally be taking off.

It hasn’t happened as fast as some, myself included, may have anticipated.

It has long been real-

ized pulse crops; peas, beans and lentils, are a major human protein source in much of the world. That is particularly true in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and a number of other countries.

That all translates into a major market.

Canada has done well in accessing such markets. India bought 1.33 million tonnes of peas in 2016. China bought one million tonnes, and Bangladesh took 290,878 tonnes as the three largest markets.

But there has long been a belief the potential was greater. Over the years there has certainly

been interest in pulse crops in terms of diversifying the crops grown here.

Lupins held much interest for a year or two, as did pinto beans, but so far past peas and lentils, no pulse crop has become particularly significant for Canadian Prairie farmers. That may well be about to change.

The domestic market for pulses appears poised to boom.

T h e C a m e ro n a n nouncement is only the latest in a list of announcements which suggest a growing market for pulses domestically.

French plant-based ingredient maker Roquette, is building the world’s largest pea protein factory in Portage la Prairie, Man. The $400 million facility will use up to 250,000 tonnes of peas a year starting in 2019. This is clearly the announcement which seems to bode well for the future of pulse crops

here based on plant scale, and international connections.

But, Roquette is not the only international player in the current wave of pulse production expansion here. A German company called Canadian Protein Innovation plans to build a $75 million pea fractionation plant in Moose Jaw, Sask., which will process 100,000 tonnes of peas a year into starch, protein and fibre.

And then there are plans for a $15 million addition to a processing plant in Bowden, Alta., which will have a flour mill, dry and wet fractionation lines, and even-

tually a pet food ingredients plant. The plant will consume 100,000 tonnes of peas and lentils once at full capacity.

Most of these plants will process pulses for their protein, likely creating initial demand for peas as they are the lowest cost pulse, but it could lead to interest in other crops, those with higher protein production, and that could open the door to new crops for producers.

It will certainly create a number of domestic markets and should stabilize markets pushing pulse production to a higher level of importance for producers.

Lake Lenore wins pre-district cross-country title

The competitive cross-country season is underway for students from across Horizon School Division as they competed in the pre-district championships on Sept. 27 in Wynyard and St. Brieux.

St. Brieux The Lake Lenore Lancers’ crosscountry dominance continued at the pre-district championships as they claimed yet another team title, edging out the Middle Lake Avengers and Muenster Cougars by two points.

Points are awarded to schools with the top five runners at each school earning points based on their finishing position, with the points awarded corresponding with the finishing spot.

The school then with the fewest points wins the team title.

The Lancers finished the meet with just eight points thanks in large part to a number of excellent finishes by their runners, including a meet high seven top threes.

The Lancers finished with a pair of podium finishes in two different events, as they claimed first and third in the junior boys event, and second and third in the senior boys competi-

tion.

The Lancers also added first place finishes in the Wee Pee Girls, and Junior Girls events.

The final podium finish for the Lancers came in the Pee Wee Boys competition.

The Lancers saw 19 of their 25 runners qualify for the district championship, where they will be in search of their seventh straight team title.

Finishing just behind the Lancers were their grid 777 rivals, the Avengers, who finished with ten total team points, thanks in large part to six podium finishes.

The Avengers’ best event came in the Bantam Girls competition, where they claimed a first and a second.

Their remaining four podium finishes were spread out over four different events as they claimed first in the Pee Wee Girls event, and thirds in the Senior Girls, Junior Girls, and Bantam Boys competitions.

The Avengers qualified 14 of their 21 runners for the district championship.

Finishing in a tie with the Avengers for second, were the Muenster Cougars, who also claimed ten points, thanks to six podium finishes as well.

Humboldt RCMP looking for suspect in Watson robbery

The Humboldt and Langian RCMP are looking for any information on a robbery that took place in Watson at 12:30 am on Sept. 28.

According to a press release from the Humboldt and Lanigan RCMP, a lone suspect walked into a Watson business and sprayed an employee and bystander with bear-mace before taking a purse containing an undisclosed amount of cash, a debit card, and credit cards.

The suspect fled however no vehicle or direction was noted.

“Humboldt RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. He is described as: an adult, Caucasian male, 5 ft. 9 or 10 inches tall with brown hair and wearing a white t-shirt, dark hoodie and a mask over his face,” reported the press release.

The district championships will head to St. Brieux on Oct. 5 as runners in the older age groups look to book a spot at provincials.

Wynyard The Wynyard Golden Bears picked up a second place finish in the team points competition, as they finished with ten points, five points back of Strasbourg.

The Golden Bears finished the meet with eight podium finishes including second and third place finishes in both the senior boys and junior girls events.

The Golden Bears added four other

podium finishes, all in different events including first in Wee Pee Boys, second in Senior Girls, and third in the Junior Boys, and Pee Wee Boys events.

Thanks to their strong showing, the Golden Bears will send 14 of their 20 runners to the district championship.

Finishing just behind the Golden Bears in the team points standings were the Lanigan Elementary Lazers, who finished seven points back of the Golden Bears.

While the Lazers were able to grab the final spot on the team points podium, they did not have a large number of runners climb onto the podium in individual races, with just two podium finishers, a first in the Pee Wee Girls event, and a third in the Wee Pee Girls race.

The Lazers still did enjoy a great deal of top ten success, as seven of their 11 runners earned berths at the district championships.

Other schools to book a berth at the district championships include Wadena Composite, Wynyard Elementary, Nokomis, Englefeld, Quill Lake, Raymore, Watrous Elementary, Watrous High, Muskowekwan, Kawacatoose, Viscount, George Gordon, Watson, LeRoy, Drake, and Punnichy High.

St. Peter’s College hand out annual awards

The amount of awards and recipients says a lot about the community support and the quality of students coming to St. Peter’s College.

Over $70,000 worth of awards were handed out to 53 students, including 15 Horizon School Division grade 12 students who were rewarded a St. Peter’s College class to be taken this school year.

Brenda McNabb, Chair of the Scholarships and Awards Committee, says the awards are also a way to celebrate the 20 donors who make the awards possible, whether they are alumni or members of the community.

The fact that some of these awards have been around for decades does speak to the commitment of the college, says McNabb. “It shows how much value they place on making post-secondary available to students in a rural settings.�

The Great Plains make stop in Watson

The Great Plains made another stop to the area on Sept. 29 as they visited the Trinity United Church in Watson for their latest concert.

After stops in Kelvington, Humboldt, and Kinistino within the last year, the Great Plains made their first appearance in Watson, since playing with Gary Fjellgaard at the Watson Civic Centre.

The show featured the Great Plains playing 90 per cent of their own music, but also added in those that are well known, including Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

“Even the best players have to sprinkle in a couple that people know so that they’ll feel warm and fuzzy inside. I think it gives people something to judge by too,” noted band member Darrel Delaronde.

As for the set list, Delaronde notes they stuck to a similar one they used at their last concert but made some changes based on how they were feeling.

“We think about what am I going to play next, I don’t know if I can sing that one or maybe I’ll try a new one.

It’s all just up in the air all the time and that’s what keeps us alive on stage.”

The show was played in front of a smaller crowd inside the church, but Delaronde says he prefers it that way.

“Some of our best songs have been played at small shows because it’s more relaxed. We don’t have to satisfy 150 people or 300 people out there.

Having 40 people in a small room, it’s like a house concert and you treat them as just company. It’s warmer.”

Overall Delaronde was pleased with how the show went.

“It was lovely. I think the people were fun.”

As for stopping in Watson again one day, Delaronde says that is something he would like to do.

Obituaries SARETSKY: In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 23, 2017 Barbara Anne (nee Bergermann) Saretsky 80 years of Humboldt passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the tranquility of a country setting. Barbara was born on December 17, 1936 to John and Clara (nee Draude) Bergermann at Muenster Sask., the oldest of 12 children. Barbara obtained all of her education in Muenster except for Grade 12, which she received while attending the Ursuline Academy in Bruno. Upon completion of her Grade 12, she entered the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in June of 1959. Even as a young girl Barbara always knew she wanted to be a nurse, and although she worked in several different departments, the maternity ward was her favourite.

She helped deliver many of the babies in the surrounding communities and in future years, often informed her children’s friends and acquaintances that she had taken care of them in the nursery. On October 26, 1959 she married Emil Saretsky from the Burr area.

This union was blessed with 7 children. Her life was full, working outside of the home and raising the children, along with all the domestic duties that went with it. In 1980 Barbara started employment at St Mary’s Villa, she was a caring, compassionate nurse and enjoyed working with the elderly, she often remarked however that it helped to have a good sense of humour. In 2000, after 20 years at St Mary’s Villa, at the age of 64, she retired from nursing. Barbara and Emil worked together on the farm. She loved gardening and all aspects of yard work, preferring to spend her time outdoors if she could. She enjoyed hosting many gatherings, especially when the yard and flowers were at their best. Her other passion was sewing. Barbara spent many countless hours sewing for her family. Some items included wedding dresses for various daughters, and complete sets of bridesmaid dresses. She also enjoyed quilting and many different crafts. The countless hours of sewing were made possible because of her husband Emil?s contribution in the kitchen. He would make meals on occasion so she could make her sewing deadlines. She often told him how much she appreciated that. Music was also a huge part of Barbara’s life. She enjoyed playing the piano and spent time singing with St Peter’s Chorus for a few years. Barbara and Emil both encouraged their children to sing from a very young age and many happy family memories are centered around this pastime. Barbara was also the choir director at St Scholastica Parish for many years. In 2010, Barbara and Emil moved to Humboldt, shortly after that move, Emil passed away. Emil had always told his children that “your Mom was the best nurse ever�, and that when he would fall ill, she always took very good care of him. In the spring of 2011, Barbara moved to Park View Condos. She often remarked how much she enjoyed her neighbours there, and of course, the sunny deck where she could grow more flowers. Barbara was a spiritual woman, but her faith and her strength were tested in 2007, when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Barbara fought that battle tenaciously and won. She maintained a positive attitude throughout her illness and was an example of perseverance and faith for all of those around her. She credited her recovery to her excellent surgeon, the health care team that took care of her, which included naturopathic medicine, and the prayers of many people throughout the province. She enjoyed 9 more years of independent living until her health began to fail. In the past few months, it was amazing to note that it didn’t matter how weak she was, when she had company, her energy level would escalate, she enjoyed all of her visitors so much.

Barbara was proud of her family and their accomplishments, and supported every event she was able to. As the number of her descendents grew greatly, she continued to remember birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions. She told her children and grandchildren numerous times that they were her greatest treasure, and how thankful she was for them and everything they had done for her. Barbara’s loving, caring and compassionate personality will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her 7 children, 31 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. BRIGGS: Ruth Violet Nov. 11, 1926 - Sept. 22, 2017 “We lost an amazing lady; our mom Ruth Briggs, a very gentle soul has gone to be with her Lord.� Ruth Violet (nee Gassall) Briggs of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson, SK, (and formerly of Spalding, SK), passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, September 22, 2017. She was 90 years of age.

Ruth was born on November 11, 1926, to Frederick and Margaret (nee Leah) Gassall in the Saskatoon area. She attended Floral School, then moved to Saskatoon to finish her education. Ruth was always pleased to say that she went to school with Gordie Howe, who was also born near Floral. After completing a secretarial course, she worked in Saskatoon. Ruth met the love of her life, Stewart Briggs, when he was on leave from the Canadian Armed Forces. They were married on July 15, 1946, and started their life together in the Spalding district. Life was difficult, but they persevered and worked side-by-side, whether in the field or tending to their livestock.

Their family of three girls were raised on the farm. The Briggs table was always a meeting place for dinner or coffee time. No one was every turned away or left hungry; an extra plate was always available. When Ruth’s family left to pursue their lives, she went to work at the Spalding Pharmacy. When the grandchildren started to arrive, they were greeted with great joy; hugs and kisses were always offered and they would still wait for Ruth’s hugs as adults.

Ruth always had time to talk to all her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, making them all feel very important. Everyone will remember her standing at the door waving goodbye and telling them she loved them, and that they should phone when they got home, whether they were going ten miles or a hundred. Ruth and Stewart loved the lake and spent a lot of time at their Marean Lake cabin. In later years, they started attending chuck wagon races with their very dear friends, the Souter family, who became extended family members to Ruth and Stewart. In 1986, they sold the farm and moved to Spalding. Over the years, Ruth was a member of the White Dove Society, volunteered at the Spalding Museum, and spent many hours working at the Spalding Bowling Alley. Her greatest passions in life were her family first and foremost, quilting, needlework, gardening, and tending to her plants and flowers. She will be remembered for her good ethics, hard work, and importance of the love she had for her family. On October 16, 2011, Stewart passed away. Ruth continued to live in their home for another four years, and then moved to Sunshine Manor in Watson. Just three weeks ago, she became a resident of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge. Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters and 12 grandchildren: Beryl Slater (Albert Rose) and family, Michael (Erin) Slater, Paul (Susan) Slater, Brent (Brittany) Slater, Brock (Renae) Slater, Cindy (Fidelio) Borges, and David (Erin) Rose; Brenda (James) Pomfrey and family, Derrick Pomfrey, Corey Pomfrey, and Jennifer (Devon) Gillanders; and Shirley (Lloyd) McLeod and family, Laurie (Ashley) Reschny, Jody McLeod (Dave Bilokraly), and Robert (Leslie) McLeod; 16 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Lorne (Myrtle) Briggs; very special friends, Vincent and Florence Dewing; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stewart Briggs; son, Marlin (in infancy); parents, Frederick and Margaret (nee Leah) Gassall; parents-in-law, Lee and Mable (nee Gray) Briggs; 16 step-brothers and step-sisters and their spouses; two sisters-in-law and their spouses; and by numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held at Crossroads Bible Church, Spalding, on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Brian Unger. Obituaries DOEPKER: Allan Joseph Sept. 14, 1940 - Sept. 19, 2017 With family by his side, our loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK. He was 77 years of age. Allan was born on September 14, 1940, in Humboldt and was the eldest son of Leo and Celestine (nee Stangel) Doepker. He was raised on the family farm near Annaheim, SK, and attended Leavenworth Country School until beginning high school in Annaheim. Following high school, Allan attended Teacher’s College and he began his 30-year teaching career in 1963. He later completed his Bachelor of Education Degree in 1970. Allan and Beatrice Schreiner were married on July 6, 1963, in Annaheim where they raised their two sons, Kelly and Darren. During his career, Allan touched countless lives as a passionate teacher and coach, and genuinely cared for all of his students. Additionally, Allan was very active in the community, as he served many years as town councillor, a member on the Board of Directors for St. Gregor Credit Union, a member of the Annaheim Rec Board, as well as the President of the Annaheim New Horizons. He was an avid baseball player, curler, card player, musician, outdoorsman and gardener. As time passed, Allan’s grandchildren brought great joy to his life as he very much enjoyed traveling to their various activities and sporting events. Allan is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Beatrice (nee Schreiner) Doepker; two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren: Kelly (Bobbie) Doepker of Maidstone, SK, and family, Taylor (Dean Ogg) and their children Sawyer and Orie, Kassidy (Quinn Flegel), and Morgan (Dan Brelje); and Darren (Jackie) Doepker of Saskatoon, SK, and family, Colin, Brett and Kristen; four brothers and one sister: Lorne (Janice) Doepker; Merlyn (Rick) Palmer; Marvin Doepker; Darrel (Yvonne) Doepker; and Aldon (Trina) Doepker; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Celestine (nee Stangel) Doepker; his father-and-mother-in-law, Adolph and Loretta (nee Sarauer) Schreiner; as well as numerous other family members. The Prayer Service for Allan was held at St. Ann’s R.C. Church, Anneheim, on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., led by Glenn Taphorn. Scripture readers were Donna Dube and Jerome Dauk, and the eulogy was delivered by Scott Vanderlinde.

Music ministry was provided by director Lorraine Holtvogt and members of the St. Ann’s Parish Choir. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Ann’s R.C. Church on Monday, September 25, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Anthony Atter. Others taking part were: Colin Doepker, crossbearer; Jackie Doepker and Jinny Doepker, scripture readers; Kassidy Doepker, intentions; all of Allan’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren, giftbearers. Urnbearers were members of Allan’s family. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Allan’s life”. Interment followed at St. Ann’s R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either the St. Ann’s R.C. TOKARSKI: Michael “Mike” Aug. 25, 1927 - Sept. 26, 2017 Michael (Mike) Tokarski of Watson, SK passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday September 26, 2017 at the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson.

SK. He was 90 years old. Mike was born on August 25, 1927 to George and Michalena (nee Babi) Tokarski in Oplitzko, Poland.

In 1937, at the age of 10, he accompanied his mother to Canada to join his father who came two years earlier and was working in the Blaine Lake area. Mike’s father purchased land in the Wimmer district, near Watson, and moved his family there. Mike attended the Westasta Valley School for a short time before leaving to help his mother on the family farm when his father unexpectedly passed away in 1939. In early 1950, Mike met his future wife Olga Hleck and they were married at St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Watson, SK later that year. Mike also purchased property a few miles south of his homestead to start his own family farm. Here they raised their five children in which two followed in his farming footsteps. Mike loved life on the farm and operated a mixing farming operation for many years. In 1986, Mike and Olga moved off the farm to Watson. In his earlier years, he enjoyed golfing, playing softball, playing cards and curling. He was also an avid hockey fan. Loving the outdoors went hand in hand with his other interests of hunting and fishing. Mike was active with the National Farmer’s Union and the Canadian Wheat Board. His faith was very important to him and he was an active member of Wimmer’s Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He enjoyed playing pool and cards at the New Horizons where he also served as president. Mike and Olga were also kept busy following their grandchildren in their various sporting and school activities. MUELLER: Lenard Brian June 19, 1969 - Sept. 22, 2017 Lenard “Lenny” Brian Mueller of Saskatoon, SK, (and formerly of Humboldt, SK), passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017.

Lenny was born on June 19th, 1969, to Leonard and Geraldine (nee Frank) Mueller in Humboldt.

He began his life on the farm near St. Gertrude with five siblings, Gordon, Michelle, Lisa, Karen and Regan. When he was four, the family moved to Humboldt to be closer to school and sporting activities.

Lenny spent his younger years being a good student, a good friend, and an outdoorsy “full on” kid. He did everything with deep conviction, a hearty and infectious laugh and a bit of innocent mischief. He was a good hockey player and left home for higher level hockey, playing double AA, then triple AAA midget in Saskatoon, SJHL in Estevan, and WHL in Prince Albert. Lenny hung up his skates for textbooks, and a pretty girl, entering the University of Saskatchewan. He married Lisa Lisitza of Middle Lake on July 11, 1992. Lenny and Lisa graduated together the following year, her with a degree in Education and him with a Commerce degree. They bought a farm, and Lenny entered a long and very successful career as an Investment Advisor. Lenny took promotions and moved his family to follow his career from Humboldt to Regina, to Pilot Butte, Moose Jaw, and finally to Saskatoon. He achieved a vice-president role, but went back to what he loved, talking to clients.

His last position was partner, and part-owner, at Wellington West which became the National Bank. During those years, Lenny and Lisa raised three beautiful daughters: Alexa (1997), Shae-Lynn (1999), and Sabrina (2005). He will be deeply missed and never forgotten by his family, Lisa (nee Lisitza) Mueller and their three daughters, Alexa, Shae-Lynn, and Sabrina; parents, Leonard and Geraldine (nee Frank) Mueller; brother Gordon Mueller (Kendra, nee Pederson) and children Mackenzie, Mitchell, Madison; sister Michelle Mueller (Clayton Gessner) and children Stephen (Angela), Jesse, Kyle (Stephanie) and Brant; sister Lisa Mueller (Allan de Paiva) and children Rawdon, Max, Shaye, William, and Karis; sister Karen Mueller (Rick Kelln) and children Samantha, Nicole, Alena, and Jessica; brother Regan Mueller (Melanie nee Snook) and children Koen, Kiley and Klaire; brother-in-law Rick Lisitza (Susan nee Welk) and children Megan, Joseph and Cassie; brother-inlaw Mike Lisitza (Arlene nee Demmert) and children Torrie (Mike Banasek) and Tyler; sister-in-law Janine (Michael Possberg) and daughter Kyra. Lenny was predeceased by his mother-in-law Dolly Lisitza (nee Andersen); and by his father-in-law Orest Lisitza. The Funeral Mass was held at the Cathedral of the Holy Family, Saskatoon, on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Deyre Azcuna.

She was 89 years of age. Evelyn was one of life’s special souls.

She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who left a joyous mark on the lives of those she touched as she went smiling and laughing through life. She was born to Robert and Augusta (nee Chantler) Harvey at their home near Kildrum, SK. Evelyn grew up there and attended school at Kildrum, then completed Grade 12 at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, SK. She then trained to be a telephone operator in Saskatoon, and accepted a position in that occupation in Humboldt. Evelyn met Robert Collin and they were married on October 22, 1951, at St. Augustine Parish in Humboldt. They began their life together on the Collin family farm near Peterson, SK. Over the next 12 years, Evelyn and Robert were blessed with five children, one daughter and four sons, however, one son died in infancy. They worked side-by-side on their mixed-farm operation. Evelyn loved gardening and baking, and was famous for her homemade buns.

She also enjoyed reading, travelling, crocheting and doing cross-stitch.

In addition, Evelyn kept busy following and enjoying all the activities her children and grandchildren were involved with. In March 1986, she and Robert retired from farming and moved to Humboldt. They relocated to Caleb Village in 2011. Over the years, Evelyn was a member of the ACW ladies group, and active in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Evelyn will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren: Janet (Dave) Runge of Cold Lake, AB, and family, Michael Runge (Joanna), and Crystal (Mark) Agar and children Ethan, Benjamin and Jacob, all of Calgary, AB; Brian (Donna) Collin of Saskatoon, SK, and family, Tanya (Ricky) Cuthbert and son Theodore, Janelle (Ryan) Paproski and children Mara, Aayla and Kanan, and Breanne Collin (Michael), all of Saskatoon, SK; Mervin (Annette) Collin of Peterson, SK, and family, Lisa Collin of Saskatoon, SK, Sarah (Catlynn) Kramer and children Vaughn and Maxwell of Ottawa, ON, Leanne Collin (Greg), and Christa Collin, all of Saskatoon, SK; and Daryl Collin (Sherry) of Bruno, SK; one brother and one sister: Bob (Theresa) Harvey and Doris Bieber, all of Saskatoon, SK; sisterin-law, Thora Harvey of Fairmont, BC; and by numerous nieces and nephews. TREMEL: Paul George July 13, 1988 - Sept. 22, 2017 It is with broken hearts that the family of Paul George Tremel of the Bruno district announces his accidental passing at the Bruno district on Friday, September 22, 2017. He was 29 years of age. Paul was born to Jean and Brenda (nee Boak) Tremel on July 13th, 1988, in Saskatoon, SK. He was raised on a farm near Peterson with his sister Michelle and brother Marcel, and grew up helping on the family farm.

Paul attended Bruno School, and upon graduation, attended SIAST where he completed the Heavy Equipment - Truck & Transportation Technician program. In 2012, Paul completed his Journeyman as a Truck and Transport Mechanic. He loved the challenge of fixing anything and was a very talented mechanic. Paul was an avid sportsman, especially broomball, and enjoyed being part of a team. As well, he loved being outdoors, and spent many enjoyable hours snowmobiling, skiing, quading, hunting, camping, and fishing. However, his real passion in life was farming and family. From a young age, Paul was fascinated with all aspects of the family farm and took great pride in the farm that he and his dad had together. Anyone who knew Paul admired his excellent work ethic, funloving nature, and the immense love he had for his two sons, Tucker and Ryder. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sons, Tucker and Ryder; the mother of his children, Kelsey (nee Grey) Tremel; his parents, Jean and Brenda (nee Boak) Tremel; sister, Michelle (Colin) Olchowski and their children Drew and Owen; brother Marcel Tremel; paternal grandparents, Alain and Albertine (nee Boutin) Tremel; maternal grandmother, Alice (nee Crabb) Boak; and by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Apple Layer: â&#x20AC;˘ 2 cups apple (thinly sliced - cored & peeled) â&#x20AC;˘ Âź cup sugar â&#x20AC;˘ 2 tsp. flour

â&#x20AC;˘ â&#x20AC;˘ â&#x20AC;˘

1 tsp. lemon juice Âź tsp. cinnamon Unbaked 9â&#x20AC;? pie crust

Toss apples with sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon. Mix and put on top of pie crust.

Combine eggs, pumpkin, evaporated milk, sugar, margarine & spices in bowl. Mix and pour over apples. Bake at 375ÂşF for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with Crumble Topping.

Crumble Topping: â&#x20AC;˘ ½ cup flour â&#x20AC;˘ 5 Tbsp. granulated sugar

â&#x20AC;¢ ½ cup white chocolate chips â&#x20AC;¢ 2 cups white chocolate chips â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢ â&#x20AC;¢

1½ cups gingersnap cookie crumbs ¼ cup pumpkin puree ¼ cup graham cracker crumbs 2 Tbsp. icing sugar ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon Pinch of salt 2 ounces softened cream cheese

In a large mixing bowl combine gingersnap cookie crumbs, pumpkin puree, graham cracker crumbs, icing sugar, cinnamon, salt and cream cheese and beat till smooth. Melt ½ cup white chocolate chips in microwave stirring every 30 seconds so they do not burn. Add melted chocolate to mixture and combine. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours.

Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll 1 heaping teaspoon of mixture into balls. Melt remaining 2 cups white chocolate chips. Drop the balls into chocolate and coat each ball. Place coated ball on parchment paper.

Garnish with a few gingersnap crumbs.

Chill truffles for about 30 minutes until chocolate sets. Store in fridge.
