Progress in: City of Humboldt submitted by Kerri Martin
The “Hum” in Humboldt continues................ The release of the 2011 Federal Census population figures confirms that Humboldt and Saskatchewan are growing and that approximately 82% of Saskatchewan residents are living in cities, towns, villages and resort villages. Humboldt’s population has increased by 13.6% over the last four years. The 2011 Federal Census population for Humboldt is 5,678. Humboldt has one of the highest population growth rates amongst the cities in Saskatchewan. Humboldt is a growing, vibrant community that has attracted increased residential, commercial, industrial and institutional growth over the past few years. This growth is laying a solid foundation for a continued healthy economy in Humboldt and surrounding area. The recent investments in our new Hospital and new High School
along with major upgrades and renovations to the Uniplex, will help ensure Humboldt is a great place to live, work and invest for many years into the future. Building permit values from 20072010 were an average of $ 30 million per year. For 2011 they were $ 5.7 million for residential, $ 2 million for commercial and $ 1.4 for industrial, totalling $ 9.1 million. Projections for 2012 to 2017 construction activity are estimated to exceed these levels. Several major initiatives are currently underway and others are in the planning stages. The Horizon School Division will be proceeding with their plans for major renovations and construction of the new Humboldt Public School. A number of private residential land developments are proceeding. The City anticipates these housing developments will bring a variety of housing options to the community.
The vibrant and growing retail and service sector is continuing with several announcements in the past few months. New businesses are opening and local businesses are renovating and expanding. A current project is the development of a Downtown Business Improvement District. First reading for establishing the Bylaw to create a BID was passed at council’s Monday, February 13th meeting. Council sees this as a positive step in working with business owners in the downtown area. The goals of the Downtown Humboldt Business Improvement District are to encourage the development of a vibrant and prosperous downtown; work to improve the District’s appearance and image; as well as promoting and marketing the District. As we continue to move forward the City still recognizes renewing old infrastructure and preparing infrastructure for growth and development are going
to be the biggest challenges. Rebuilding water and sewer lines; sidewalks and roads throughout the community continues to be City Council’s top priority. Humboldt is very proud of the numerous community organizations and volunteers that continue to make Humboldt a great community to be involved in hosting major events. This past January, a very successful Provincial Scotties Women’s Curling Championship was held at the Humboldt Curling rink. Attendance was excellent, the host committee did an excellent job and we received many compliments on the fantastic facilities and hospitality. Upcoming events include the exciting RBC National Junior A Hockey Championship in May and the Humboldt Collegiate 100th Anniversary Reunion in July. Our City is very proud to be hosting such significant events that will bring visitors from across Canada to our city and region.
Progress in: Village of Englefeld submitted by Lani Best
The completion of the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment system installed in our Water Treatment Plant has been followed by the development of 16 new residential lots, the construction of a new fire
hall and a duplex built through a partnership with Schulte Industries. The fire hall and duplex will be completed spring of 2012. We will start construction of a second duplex with Schulte Industries as soon as the first one is completed. 2011
saw the sale of 5 residential lots and one commercial lot with construction to begin in 2012. We are looking forward to seeing our community to continue to grow. We also purchased new playground equipment and installed it
at the play grounds. A new restaurant opened its doors as well. With the numbers in from the 2011 Census, we have seen a population increase of 8.8%, a trend we hope will continue for all small communities in our province. Englefeld
Protestant Separate School was ranked #1 in the province according to the Report Card on Western Canadian High Schools written by the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies (AIMS) and the Frontier Center for Public Policy.

Colony Motor Products in Humboldt remembers June of 1972 as a great time. That marked the opening month for Colony Pontiac-Buick Ltd, which, at the time, was actually a few blocks away from its current location. Following a building swap, a few years later, Colony Motor Products found its home at 331 Main Street, in Humboldt. June of 2012 will be the landmark 40th anniversary for Colony Motor Products. Dealership owner, Maurice Plemel, remarks, “We enjoyed growing with St. Peter ’s Colony over the last 40 years.” Maurice began as the Sales Manager in 1975 and 22 years later, he purchased the majority of shares from original owner, Ervin Jaeb. Maurice hopes to be succeeded by his three sons, Kevin, Kirk, Blair and daughter, Megan – all of whom have worked at the dealership. Currently, Kirk is the Service Manager and Kevin is the General Manager. Colony Motor Products prides itself in keeping people happy when they come in. That’s why there’s always a fresh coffee smell when you enter the building. Employees of Colony pride themselves in serving not only their customer base, but also the communities where they belong. Each year, Colony Motor Products donates resources in the form of individual volunteers, sponsorships, gifts, and prizes to all kinds of fundraising initiatives and community organizations in and around Humboldt.
Larger donations: In 2009-2010, Colony Motor Products dedicated over $10,000 to the Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation. In 2012, Colony Motor Products will be a Bantam Level Sponsor, committing at least $5,000 to the RBC Cup, this May. They also sponsor the Kelly Bates Football camp, each year, and will have donated $4,800, including this year’s camp. The Village of Muenster has been experiencing unprecedented growth in the past few years. The most recent population statistics according to the 2011 Census show that the village has grown to 422 residents from 342 (2006 Census), an increase of 23%. Over the last 7 – 8 years, the village was slowly seeing its inventory of available residential lots being purchased for development. In 2007, Village Council saw the need to address the demand for lots and began developing a residential subdivision. Construction of new homes in that subdivision began in 2008, and since that time there have been 15 new homes constructed and 4 new commercial properties developed within the village. With that subdivision being completely sold out, in 2011 the village began development of another new residential subdivision with 14 more lots for development. Two of those 14 lots have already sold. The Village has been working to keep up with the progress by upgrading some of its current infrastructure. One major project is the recent installation of a new water main which was required to service the expanding village. The new water main project included upgrades such as new fire hydrants along with the installation of an engine driven pump for the water distribution to support the fire protection and also serves as back up power supply in the event of power outages. Another upgrade was the purchase of a new fire truck in 2008 for the Muenster Fire Department. The new subdivisions have attracted young people to the community as Muenster offers a great place to raise
a family with small-town caring and a safe place for children. Seniors who want to live in a quiet community have also found it a great place to retire. In the Village is the rental facility of Wolverine Heights which is operated by the Muenster Housing Authority. The catholic community of Muenster has also been busy and they have undertaken a huge restoration project to St. Peter’s Cathedral, which is a tourist attraction that features paintings by Berthold Von Imhoff. This restoration project included upgrading to the entire exterior and interior of the building. St. Peter’s College has undertaken major renovations to the buildings and also increased the programming offered to students. This recent expansion of courses at St. Peter’s College will attract more young people to the college and also the community. Being affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan makes it a great place for young people to begin their secondary education. Muenster has a kindergarten to Grade 12 public school with a great academic offering and also a competitive sports program for the students. For residents interested in sports there are facilities such as a curling rink, community use of St. Peter’s Arena, a number of baseball diamonds, with an active Sports Club to co-ordinate its minor hockey and baseball where a new concession building serves our outdoor activities. Muenster also has many active volunteer service groups such as the Elks, Knights of Columbus, New Horizon Senior Citizens group, Community Centre groups, etc. Muenster has essential services such as a postal outlet, credit union, co-op grocery store and a wide range of other businesses to serve residents.

submitted by Cathy Coleman It’s a great time to be on the prairies and an even better time to be in Watson! Our people are excited, and with good reason…. or reasons, actually! The most obvious of these being that we are growing and growth leads to countless other opportunities! New Census Canada reports an 8.1% jump in population over a 4 year period. These families have come from near and far to take advantage of all that’s going on in Watson! Watson has so very much to offer! There are an impressive number of jobs for a town of our size; over 300 local positions! This number has been steadily growing with the addition of many new businesses in recent years. We have some large companies that have been constantly expanding and attracting labour to the area as well as many unique small businesses. Watson is a proud home to an organic bakery, a clothing and esthetics boutique, an art gallery, a custom embroidery shop, a chiropractor, two massage offices and too many others to mention. Add a booming agricultural industry and we have a very healthy local economy! But it’s not all work; play is important too and we have lots of places to do that! McNab Regional Park is home to our 9-hole grass green golf course, outdoor swimming pool and fully serviced campground. Watson Arena boasts artificial ice and hosts our minor hockey teams, recreational hockey, the skating club and users from all over the region. We have several ball diamonds and a local slo-pitch league as well as minor ball in the summer months. We are eagerly anticipating our new Fresh Air Community Centre, set to be completed later this year! It will be a great gathering spot for all kinds of events and is conveniently located near the ball diamonds. As if that’s not enough, we also have a local fitness centre! It’s all about location, location, location and in Watson, we have that too! We are centrally located in the province at the junction of two major highways and railroads. We are very close to many small
communities and just half an hour from the nearest city. Drive a little further in almost any direction and you will reach one of our province’s major cities. Those facts have always been true but another new development is making Watson even more attractive. The proposed BHP Billiton potash development is just over 30 kms. away! This has made Watson very appealing to even more businesses, developers and families. We anticipate this interest to continue to grow in the coming years! Newcomers to the area have also had their pick of many choice real estate options! Several existing residential and commercial properties are on the market and selection continues to be good. Prospective builders have numerous lots to browse through in both new and established areas of town. Prime commercial space is still available along Main Street and elsewhere as well. In addition to available properties, Watson is poised to expand even further into open land surrounding the town as soon as demand allows. Due to a high demand for rental property and a low availability locally. There are several construction projects currently including two duplex units and one rental house. There are currently houses for sale on the market but rental properties are at capacity. What’s more, the Town of Watson has been working hard to encourage new investment with tax incentives and vast improvements to town infrastructure. Major investments in roads and the very near completion of a new Reverse Osmosis System have put smiles on the faces of many! We have made sure our water and sewer systems can handle the recent growth and have planned for even higher capacity in the near future! Watson has been making the most of favorable economic times and jumping on every opportunity that comes our way! People are energized, great things are happening and what you’re looking for just might be here. Our new slogan “Small Town Today, Your Town Tomorrow” really says it all… see you soon!

ANGELSTAD’s
Quick Cobbler 821 - 6th Avenue - Downtown Humboldt Ph. (306) 682-5524
Angelstad’s Quick Cobbler: in the heart of downtown Humboldt For 40 years, Angelstad’s Quick Cobbler has been providing shoe repair, shoe care and foot care retail service to the people of Humboldt. Located in the heart of downtown Humboldt, the business was opened by Jerome P. Angelstad, OST, in 1972. “It was an opportunity to go into business,” Angelstad said. “I did leathercrafts as a hobby, and I wanted to learn how to make shoes.” At the time, there was a huge demand for the service, as older shoe repairmen were slowly retiring, and not many were going into the business.
The business’ first located was in Angelstad’s father’s plumbing shot on 9th St. Angelstad made his first pair of shoes in 1978, and in 1985, on his father ’s retirement, he purchased the building on 6th St. where the business is still located. In the 1990s, a 10foot addition was made to the building. What sets the Quick Cobbler apart is his wide selection of retail products like laces, polishes and insoles, and that he uses quality materials, like Vibram, exclusively. He has been a Vibram authorized dealer since the early 1980s. These days, Angelstad
is serving a much larger area with his business, due to stores closing in other communities. Angelstad is currently remodeling the display area at the front of his store. In the future, he plans to continue to do quality resoling and heel lift replacements, as well as orthopedic work and zipper replacements, he noted, and is looking at adding some crafted leather items to his store in the future. “I’m happy with just owning a small business right in the heart of downtown Humboldt,” he said. For more information, check out his website at www.quick-cobbler.ca.

The Town of LeRoy is one of Saskatchewan’s best kept secrets and its growing! LeRoy nearly doubled in land mass last week with the annexation of 135 acres of Industrial Land. Thinking of building a new house? LeRoy has a new fully serviced 34 lot subdivision with large lots averaging 85’ x 147’! Town Council is currently offering a 2-year tax exemption to anyone who is building a new home in the community. Looking for commercial land? The town will have 28 commercial lots available for sale soon. The LeRoy Economic Development Committee is working on a “LeRoy and Area Growth Management Project. The committee has representation from the Town of LeRoy, R.M. of LeRoy No. 339 and local businesses. Co-operation, developing partnerships and sharing planning initiatives with the communities in the region is essential. LeRoy is centrally located with paved access to Highways 5 and 6 and located a short 6 mile drive to the BHP Billiton Jansen Project. Our pride and joy, LeRoy Leisureland Regional Park, features a beautiful 9-hole grass green golf course with licensed concession and pro shop, outdoor swimming pool, sand beach and camping sites! The Town of LeRoy has so much to offer you and your family. Children attend the K-12 school which hosts many extracurricular activities for our students. Children ages 3 and 4 attend the LeRoy Preschool. The residents of LeRoy enjoy attending LeRoy Braves Senior hockey games or one of many minor hockey, figure skating and power skating events on the artificial ice at the LeRoy Memorial Arena. If you want to get involved in some winter sports, Le-
Roy has a curling rink, also with artificial ice, for league or recreational play. In the summer, activity can be seen on the three ball diamonds or year round in the bowling alleys. LeRoy also has a Youth Club and 4-H Club for our younger residents. Culture is a big part of the town, as proven by our School of Dance offering various classes; the LeRoy Branch of the Parkland Regional Library is open year-round; featuring free high speed internet access; the LeRoy and District Heritage Museum; and the LeRoy Wildlife Federation. We also have a Senior Citizen Centre with a pool table, bowling alley and shuffleboard. The community has a health clinic and the Senior Assisted Living Complex (Evergreen Country Home). Volunteerism is alive and well in LeRoy, as showcased by our Volunteer Fire Department and emergency service department. Community volunteers have also successfully raised over $600,000 in 7 years through the LeRoy Leisure Lotto. This money has been provided to the recreation, culture and educational organizations in the community for various projects. LeRoy has everything you need, including a grocery store, 2 full service gas stations, 2 restaurants, full service Credit Union with ATM, Flooring store, Insurance agencies, Hotel and Bar, accommodations and many other businesses. Reverse Osmosis Water to everyone in town, paved streets, High Speed Internet, a cellular phone tower – what more could you ask for? The Town of LeRoy offers a safe and friendly environment and invites you to make our town your new home. We’re a community with a small town atmosphere and big town ideas!

As owners, Dan & Cheryl Torwalt of Century 21 Diamond Realty started the company on Dec 1 2008. Our company is a full service real estate company offering real estate services in the residential, commercial, farm/ranch, lease and condominium properties. We represent buyers from all over the world in all types of property sales transactions when purchasing property in Saskatchewan. We also represent sellers throughout Saskatchewan in all types of property sales transactions. Our company has a strong connection with other real estate companies across the country, using referrals incoming and outgoing to best service our clients. We follow a strict code of ethics – Honesty, Integrity and Professionalism. Our company has grown to 6 sales representatives and one full time administrative assistant working and there are more in the process of getting licensed in 2012. In December 2011 we realized our ofď€ ce was too small for our growing business. Accordingly we moved to a new location, 638 – 10th Street Humboldt. Our new ofď€ ce has a large reception area, 5 ofď€ ces and a board room. It is very easy to ď€ nd as we tell our clients we are right beside the new radio station in Humboldt, Bolt 107.5 FM. We also want to mention that Century 21 Diamond Realty has been nominated in 2 categories of the 2012 Humboldt Chamber of Commerce Mark of Excellence awards. We are very honoured and proud to be nominated in the Service Award and Marketing Award Categories. We truly believe in service to our customers. We try to treat everyone with the respect they deserve. Buying and selling a home will be one of the biggest decisions in their lives. We strive to make it as stress and worry free as possible. We also believe no company can match the Marketing we do in promoting your property to sell or ď€ nding buyers for your property. We at Century 21 Diamond Realty are very excited and can’t wait for the Mark of Excellence Award Gala at the end of February. We at Century 21 Diamond Realty are conď€ dent about the future of Humboldt and the surrounding areas. This area of the province is getting known as Potash Alley. The growth from the resource commodity along with current businesses and the strength of agriculture make us very excited to be a part of the growth that is going to take place. Dan and Cheryl Torwalt along with their staff look forward to working with you for many years to come. Each ofď€ ce is independently owned and operated.
