There may not have been many sirens but the Town of Lanigan was full of fire fighters over the weekend as PotashCorp Lanigan hosted the PotashCorp Annual Fire Fighters’ Rodeo.

The Sept. 16 rodeo pitted teams from some of the PotashCorp mines from around the area including Allan, Rocanville, Lanigan, Patience Lake, and Cory, as well as one team from the Town of Lanigan Fire Department, against each other in a series of competitions including search and rescue, first aid, practical skills, extinguishment, burst hose, challenge relay, and water soccer.

Being able to host the rodeo is a great way for the firefighters to showcase their skills, says PotashCorp Lanigan Safety Manager Tracy Welder. “This is really where you really tweak and hone your firefighting skills‌ the training’s invaluable and you can use it anywhere, from your first aid training, your fire extinguisher and a lot of these guys go back to their local departments and they help train them, too.â€?

Welder notes that not only does the competition give the firefighters a great opportunity to gain some extra training but it also will give them a large boost of confidence when they have to respond to a real life mission.

“If we ever have something go wrong at one of our facilities and these guys have to respond, they’ve just got that confidence that they’ve had the training, they know how to handle it and they know they’ve been pushed to the limits.�

After two straight years seeing PotashCorp Allan take home the top prize, the division from Lanigan put a stop to the streak and took home the overall title, edging Allan for their first win since 2013.

Welder notes the winning is good but the competition brings out so much more. “It’s the fun part but at the end of the night when guys are trading hats and shirts and the camaraderie and the friendships it builds and the training you receive, everybody’s a winner.�

Despite less than ideal weather conditions the rodeo also attracted large crowds, even for the outdoor events, which was great to see, says Welder. “It’s awesome to have this big of a turnout, to come

watch the guys and cheer on the guys and that helps motivate them as well.�

While the event is hosted jointly between the safety and human resources departments at the PotashCorp Lanigan mine, the competition needs numerous additional volunteers to make it run, and Welder notes without them there is no competition, specifically noting the great work the Town of Lanigan Fire Department does. “Not only do they provide us with a team to compete but they do all the side work setting up the events, getting everything ready. Some of the retired guys, they’re out at the fire field in the morning and its just awesome.�

The competition, which started in 1981 in Rocanville, before transitioning to Lanigan in 1990, will be celebrating their 29th year in Lanigan next year, and Welder encourages anyone who has not seen a fire fighters rodeo before to come and check it out.

There were 23 people that came out, to eat and visit. Workers were Chris Rault and Monica Palfy.

The Lucky Loonie winner was Albert Guricko.

The Viscount Viking Football Team enjoyed a game against Carrot River on Sept. 15. It was a close game with the Vikings taking a win 53-51.

John and Karen Dale travelled to Alberta, on Sept. 8, to visit their daughter Trudy and family.

It was a warm weekend spent outside with kids activities and some building projects.

Harpauer endorses Moe for Sask. Party leader

Humboldt’s MLA has decided who she’d like to see as the Saskatchewan Party’s next leader and the province’s next premier.

Donna Harpauer, who represents Humboldt-Watrous, has endorsed Scott Moe, who served most recently as environment minister, for the position.

The leadership election will be held Jan. 27, 2018. “Scott Moe is a very strong voice, both in our caucus and in our cabinet and I think that support is demonstrated by the number of MLAs and cabinet ministers that are endorsing Scott and seeing him as our new leader.�

Harpauer, who’s the finance minister, said Moe was strong at the cabinet table. “I have been very impressed with Scott’s ability to know his files, to be a

strong voice and he’s also a great team builder, which is extremely important in politics.�

On a personal level, the HumboldtWatrous MLA said Moe has a great sense of humour and is a guy you can sit down and have a cup of coffee with. “He is that common person. He is a great husband and a father of two.

If people ever have the opportunity to meet Scott, he’s just comfortable to be with.�

While the five leadership candidates haven’t made many policy announcements, Harpauer is supportive on one stand that Moe has taken. “He was, obviously, very front and centre and strong on the national scene when it came to the carbon tax and has been working diligently to put forward Saskatchewan’s story on how, per capita, we’re doing more to reduce emissions then almost any other province.�

No leadership candidate has of yet announced support for a carbon tax.

Every member of the Saskatchewan Party will have a vote in the leadership election. Harpauer said she’s going to make an effort to reach out and talk about Moe’s strengths with those in Humboldt-Watrous that are supportive of her party. “I’m going to be speaking with a lot of the members, plus supporters that may not have a membership.�

The MLA said those that wish to vote in the leadership election will have to become a member of the Saskatchewan Party. The same is true for those that want to vote in the Saskatchewan NDP’s leadership race. “It’s a rather unique opportunity for those who are supporters in that it is one of the rare times where you’re voting for a leader, but ultimately that leader will be our next premier.�

Cheveldayoff visits Humboldt on leadership tour

Ken Cheveldayoff is trying to reach as many Saskatchewan communities as he can and Humboldt was no exception.

The leadership candidate for the Saskatchewan Party announced his plans to run for the leadership on Aug. 28 and started campaigning across the province with a stop in Humboldt on Sept. 7. “My campaign is going to see me go out to the people and meet with them and listen to their ideas. They are the people who are going to be electing the next leader of the Saskatchewan party and the next Premier.�

While meetings with fellow MLAs are important, Cheveldayoff believes small, intimate gatherings, like the one in Humboldt are just as important.

Around 10 people came to the luncheon and discussed provincial concerns around the Humboldt area, including agriculture, education, and industry concerns.

Cheveldayoff heard loud and clear that the people around the table are against the carbon tax proposed by the federal government. “There’s better ways to have carbon reduction in the province...we had a good discussion about that. I talked about my ideas and my platform about innovation in agriculture and how we can achieve the same goal that the carbon tax is trying to do.�

Before coming to Humboldt, Cheveldayoff spent the week before touring around Northern Saskatchewan and worked his way south. That is what his campaign is going to be about, he says, is small community meetings and growing his team.

Part of his team includes former MLA Sherwin Petersen representing the constituency of Kelvington-Wadena from

Petersen watched as Cheveldayoff went from an executive assistant in the Legislature to an MLA himself and Petersen knows and believes in the experience he has.

Experience is something in large supply for Cheveldayoff and his team, with five government portfolios under his belt over a 14 year career in provincial politics. “I’ve got a wealth of experience and a background that begins in rural Saskatchewan and translates into urban Saskatchewan and a strong constituency that I have here.�

While rural Saskatchewan is an economic driver and the base for the party, Cheveldayoff still admits that winning the leadership will take many urban seats.

ince, Cheveldayoff plans on visiting all of them. Humboldt is a very important one, he says.

Cheveldayoff is running on a platform of economic growth and the 10 year plan under current Premier Brad Wall has served them well. Considering this past budget, Cheveldayoff says that it is time for the party to admit their mistakes and talk about what the next 10 years are going to look like for the Saskatchewan Party. “I’m going to implement a tax review

commission on the first day I am Premier if I’m able to have the confidence of the Saskatchewan party voters.�

Cheveldayoff says that within 60 days of him winning the leadership the government will have a platform on PST which will involve changes to insurance taxation.

Having already met with people in the financial planning and life insurance industry, Cheveldayoff says there is a better way to do it and they have shown alternative methods.

While Cheveldayoff believes in the work that Wall has done, he believes that it is time for someone else to take the torch. “I have, what they call in politics, the fire in the belly. I have the enthusiasm, the contacts all across Saskatchewan.

I think we’re going to be a formidable team.�

Cheveldayoff has recently been endorsed by local MLAs, including Delbert Kirsch, MLA for Batoche and Greg Brkich, MLA for Arm River.

Kirsch released his endorsement video on Sept. 15, saying he has, “a strong respect for his good friend, first and foremost because (Cheveldayoff) can hold a position in Cabinet but will maintain friendships with others in caucus.�

Brkich also released his endorsement video on Sept. 15 saying Cheveldayoff is a “sincere, honest, and caring person who understands urban and rural issues, listens to MLAs and works hard.�

Canada’s Shapovalov wows the tennis world

Canada has a new sports star with a name that looks like a combination of French and Russian.

Denis Shapovalov burst onto the professional tennis scene like a bolt of lightning, wowing the tennis world in August with an upset victory over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in Montreal’s Rogers Cup, going on to lose in the semi-final, and then becoming the youngest player in almost 30 years to reach the fourth round at the U.S. Open in New York in September. He lost in the round of 16, but he won thousands of fans on both sides of the border.

Shapovalov is only 18, with long shaggy blond hair that flows out from around his Nike baseball cap, worn backwards, to give at first glance the impression that he’s an Avril Lavigne Sk8er Boi. He joins Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard atop the list of Canadian tennis stars to watch. Retired tennis great Mats Wilander gave the highest praise to Shapovalov, calling his talent a combination of ‘Federer and Nadal’. Former U.S. great Brad Gilbert says the sky’s the limit for Shapovalov, saying he could potentially be the No. 1 player in the world.

The master of nicknames, Gilbert calls the Canadian star ‘Shapshot’ — merging part of the youngster’s name with

a takeoff on one of the most famous hockey movies.” How Canadian, eh?

The kid, however, prefers ‘Shapo’.

But who is Denis Shapvalov and what’s his backstory?

The tennis world just didn’t pop open a can of yellow balls, crack one open and see Shapovalov roll out.

He has worked his way up, reaching new mountains ever since he was 13.

At 16, he won the Wimbledon junior singles and teamed with Felix AugerAliassime to win the U.S. open junior doubles. The tennis world knew all about Shapovalov long before Sammy Sports Fan in Canada started to pay attention.

Shapovalov was born in Israel but moved to Canada with his parents when he was one year old. His mother, Tessa, who runs a tennis club in Vaughn, Ont., remains one of his co-coaches.

He might not have McDavid or Bautista name recognition quite yet, but he’s gaining. People are stopping him in airports, seeking autographs, and he’ll undoubtedly have votes cast in his favour when Canadian sports reporters determine our country’s outstanding athlete of the year.

After starting the year ranked 250th in the world (he was 1,162 at the end of the previous year), Shapovalov has risen to the top 70. He’s heading

toward the top — with a bullet, just like his serve.

• Bob Molinaro of pilotonline.com (Hampton, Va.): “Miami signed Jay Cutler. Apparently ownership was impressed by all the passes he completed to Dolphin cornerbacks when he played for Chicago.”

• Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “There are allegations the Red Sox cheated in a game against the Yankees. So this is how World War III will begin.”

• Comedy writer Jim Barach: “LaVar Ball will play a role in the video

game ‘NBA2K18.’ Apparently he will be the guy running up and down the sidelines trying to sell everyone some overpriced shoes.”

• Another one from Barach: “The Red Sox are expected to get a slap on the wrist over stealing signs using an Apple Watch. The part that hurt was when Bill Belichick gave them only a ‘3’ for originality.”

• RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Arland Bruce III has asked the Canadian Supreme Court to allow his concussion suit against the CFL. Trying to get money from the CFL? The guy really does need his head examined.”

• Jimmy Fallon of NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show’: “The New York Jets are 1000-to-1 longshots to win the Super Bowl. That means if you bet just one dollar... you will lose just one dollar.”

• Alex Kaseberg again: “Did you see Roger Goodell get booed at New England? Michael Vick got a better reception at the Westminster Dog Show.”

By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent Combining is well underway and we sure are getting the weather for it. It sure has been hot.

Several folks enjoyed Folkfest in Saskatoon.

A steak supper was held on Aug. 25, and was enjoyed by several folks.

Robert and Joan Callaghan enjoyed a visit with their mother Ellen Farago in Lanigan Lodge who is now back in Watrous and is happy to be back.

It was very interesting watching curling on television.

The purple martins have already left for the sunny south.

A deer was seen in my garden in town.

It was nice hearing from Anna-Mae Ryanne from Vancouver Island and she says hi to all her friends.

Dennis and Leona Credgeur were away to Meadow Lake camping with their grandchildren.

School days are here and we hope everyone has a great school year.

The evenings are sure cool now and the days are getting shorter.

GMO crops and robots the way of the future

Calvin Daniels When it comes to the future of farming regular readers will know I have a decidedly ‘scifiinspired’ vision of what is likely to occur.

That future vision has long been a two-pronged

one.

The first of those is in the area of genetically modified crops.

While I recognize a vocal opposition exists to the very idea of GM crops, I also feel that opposition is short-sighted, and is arguing a position based on perception and emotion rather than a foundation of scientific fact.

The opposition will not quiet overnight, but a couple of factors suggest it will ultimately lessen.

The overriding factor will be the need to feed the world. As popula-

tions grow there will be added pressure to produce more.

And it is likely there will be less land to grow that production on because of urban sprawl, desertification, climate change, and other factors.

The result will be a need to grow crops of greater yields, and to grow crops on less than ideal land.

The utilization of GM technology holds the promise of helping on both those fronts.

will almost certainly be in the transition to robot farming.

We have long seen farm machinery get bigger and bigger, and that certainly equates with higher unit costs.

The idea has always been that bigger means more acres being covered in the same amount of time.

But the machinery still requires operators, and increasingly highly trained operators. Staffing farm operations is an issue, especially if the goal is to keep the unit operating 24/7.

Robotic units will address at least some of the issues. Properly programmed they can, in theory, rove a field 24/7, with the long-term likelihood of a single operator at a control panel somewhere centralized on a farm.

The units are likely to be smaller, and with no operator space, lower cost, although it might be argued more will be needed. That will be an interesting question to see answered moving forward.

During the summer, we are enjoying the warmer weather and most people are on holidays, relaxing or enjoying summertime indulgences and activities. Fall is a time where we are back to work, routines, activities, and what many people would describe as our “normal� or “usual� lives.

When setting goals for your health and establishing that healthy fall routine, it is always best to make small changes. Small changes and goals are easy to accomplish and lead to success.

If you try to change everything at once it can be very overwhelming which often leads to failures. Set yourself up for success from the get-go.

Depending on your health goals chose one small change you add into your normal routine.

Get to bed before midnight each

night so you wake up feeling refreshed.

Increase your water intake by one glass per day each week.

Increase your daily servings of vegetables.

Buy a gym membership or register for a fitness class or sports team.

Schedule five minutes of meditation into your day.

It’s easier to start small with achievable goals and continue to evolve your goals over time than to try to start everything at once.

Fall back into routine this September and make those small changes to help you achieve your long-term health goals.

Wynyard, Kelvington win senior golf team titles

The return of school means the return of high school sports and one of the first sports on the docket for 2017-2018 is golf.

Senior District Championships Senior golfers from across Horizon School Division descended upon LeRoy on Sept. 12 for the Senior District Championships.

Wynyard Composite picked up the senior boys district team title knocking off LeRoy by 14 strokes, thanks of finishes of second and two sevenths, while also adding an 11th.

LeRoy meanwhile was boosted by a trio of top ten finishes, as they claimed third, fifth, and ninth, and added a 23rd place finish as well.

Other rural schools to claim top five finishes in team points, were Watson, who had fourth, 14th, and 26th place finishes, and Wadena, who managed finishes of 15th, 24th, 24th, and 27th.

In senior girls competition, Kelvington claimed the top spot in the team points competition, as they were the only team with enough golfers to be eligible for the title, and claimed finishes of first, and fifth.

Other schools to finish in the six golfer field, were Wynyard, who claimed third, and LeRoy who finished sixth.

Junior Pre-District Championships The junior golfers also hit the links this week for the pre-district championships, Sept. 14, with half the golfers swinging the sticks in St. Brieux, and the other half teeing it up in LeRoy. St. Brieux Lanigan Elemtentary and Kelvington enjoyed terrific tournaments in St. Brieux, with Lanigan enjoying two top 12 finishes and Kelvington enjoying three top 12 finishes.

Lanigan Elementary picked up the win firing a round of 47, and also claimed seventh with a score of 54.

Kelvington meanwhile, finished second, three strokes back of the win, tied for fifth, after a round of 53, and also nabbed a tenth place finish thanks to a score of 56.

Aside from first to second, the next 11 spots, from second through 12th was extremely close as it was separated by just nine strokes.

Crop report for the period September 5 to 11 Producers have made significant harvest progress, due in large part to the warm and dry weather, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report.

Sixty-five per cent of the crop is now combined, up from 45 per cent last week, which is well ahead of the five year (2012-2016) average of 40 per cent combined for this time of year. Twentytwo per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 86 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern region has 76 per cent combined, the west-central region 66 per cent and the east-central region 57 per cent. The northeastern region has 37 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has 35 per cent combined. Some producers have wrapped up harvest operations and many more expect to be finished in the coming weeks.

Minimal disease issues have occurred so far, although there are some lighter bushel weights being reported.

Unity and Neilburg areas both reported receiving five mm. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to worsen with the warm and windy weather. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 15 per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 46 per cent very short.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 11 per cent adequate, 34 per cent short and 55 per cent very short.

With the dry field conditions, many producers have indicated that winter cereals may not be seeded this fall.

Lack of moisture continues to cause crop damage, while strong winds have blown swaths around and shelled-out standing crops. There are many reports of combine and grass fires due to the extremely dry conditions. Some areas in the north reported frost and producers are assessing damage.

SaskPower has received nine reports of farm machinery coming in contact with power lines since September 1, bringing the total since August 1 to 33.

Producers are urged to be extremely careful when using equipment around power lines. Safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/ safety.

New Publisher joins Humboldt office

Valerie Durnin has a long history with the media industry.

Now she is joining the team at the Humboldt Journal as the new publisher of the Journal and the East Central Trader.

This is an innovative time for newspapers, especially small city papers, Durnin says.

“There’s talk of newspapers being dead, but they’re not. People are consuming news in greater number than ever before, they’re just doing it differently.”

Community newspapers have been grappling with moving into the digital world for a long time, says Durnin.

“There is a place where technology and news delivery meet that is still untapped,” she says. “It is a time of great opportunity.”

It is the people on the ground who are going to make the difference, she says. New ideas are going to change the landscape.

What we do with that is our challenge and privilege, she adds.

“To be in this industry at this time means that you are watching new and different things happening, and you’re constantly developing new ways to reach people.”

Meeting and working with the people of Humboldt is going to be an exciting part of starting this new position, says Durnin.

“So far I see it as a vibrant city, and one of the best things about this job is that I get to participate in the community.”

Durnin started her media career in New York City, working in retail marketing as a brand manager for

Lady Foot Locker, before moving on to become Director of Visual Merchandising for Kids Foot Locker in the late ’90s.

“With Kids Foot Locker we opened 100 stores a year, so it was quite the job,” she says.

After leaving New York, she fell into the newspaper industry by volunteering to create a community newspaper for a community club in Lund, BC, a tiny community north of Powell River.

“I wrote all the stories, took all the pictures, and I did all the layout and ads, sent it to print, brought it back in my car – and had a moment of panic,” she laughs.

With the paper in hand, she realized that people were actually going to be reading it. “It was stage fright,” she says.

After about eight months Durnin joined the staff at the Powell River Peak as a copy editor.

“They knew about my volunteer paper so they contacted me and I’ve been in the newspaper industry ever since.” She went on to work as production manager for the Peak, and as an ad designer for the Coast Reporter in Sechelt, BC. Durnin is coming from the Flin Flon Reminder, where she remains publisher, and will also serve as publisher for two newspapers in Tisdale.

Durnin says she has a real love of the industry and the communities that she serves.

“I love what we do, I love what we do for communities, and the longer I stay in it the greater my passion is for this industry.”

Reporting on local government, industry and business means reporting

on how small communities are impacted both positively and negatively, says Durnin, and that can influence people and their choices.

“We stand by the information we publish,” she says, adding it sets journalists apart from social media in important ways. “There is a difference in the quality of information when you say ‘I read it in the newspaper ’ as compared to ‘I saw it on Facebook.’”

Durnin believes that the work done by her and her teams makes a difference.

“That’s why I get up in the morning,” she says.

BLOCK: Ricky Gordon May 31, 1965 - Sept. 9, 2017 It is with broken hearts the family of Ricky Block of Annaheim, SK announce his sudden and unexpected passing on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Cudworth, SK. He was 52 years of age. Ricky was born in LeRoy, SK, on May 31, 1965, to Gordon and Scarlett (nee Buckaway) Block of LeRoy. He was raised on a farm outside of LeRoy with his two sisters, Starla and Dione, and grew up helping on the farm; playing, coaching, and refereeing hockey; running frog races; wearing his purple suit; and being a leader in his school, as President of the SRC. Ricky graduated in 1983 from LeRoy High School as Valedictorian. On April 12, 1986 he married Ann-Marie ven der Buhs of Englefeld and settled on a farm in Quill Lake. Throughout their marriage they settled in Saskatoon, where Ricky graduated as Valedictorian from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Education.

Then they moved to LeRoy; where Ricky continued farming with his dad for many years. Eventually, he started teaching at LeRoy School and then in 2001 began teaching full time in Annaheim. Ricky continued to teach at this school for the rest of his teaching career. During the summer months he trucked, farmed, built bins and coached provincial and national fastball. He passionately coached fastball, volleyball, badminton and other sports, and loved to write movies and adapt plays for his students to perform. Ricky inspired and pushed many to pursue their dreams and goals. Throughout Ricky and Ann’s marriage they welcomed four children; Jacqueline (1990), Rachelle (1994), Taylor (1997), and Dawson (2000). Ricky and Ann parted ways in 2011 and Ricky moved to Annaheim, SK. There he met his loving partner, Susan Hathiramani. They spent their happy years together sharing their love of music, art, writing and pets (Fred, Miska and Leif). Ricky was a loving father and partner, a wonderful teacher and incredible coach, who passed away doing what he loved, sharing his passion of teamwork and sports on Saturday, September 9, 2017. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten by his four beautiful children, Susan, family, students, and all of the lives he touched. Ricky will lovingly be remembered by his partner, Susan Hathiramani of Annaheim; his four children: Jacqueline (Justin Equina) of Saskatoon, Rachelle (Levi Thoner) of Saskatoon, Taylor (Derek Gardiner) of LeRoy, Dawson Block and their mother Ann Paton of LeRoy; mother Scarlett Block of LeRoy; sisters: Starla Kemp (Roger Rosenthal) of Rosetown and Dione Block of LeRoy; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and their families. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon Block. The Prayer Service for Ricky was held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK at 6:30 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Greg Smith-Windsor. The scripture reader was Bradley Torwalt, and the eulogy was delivered by Taylor, Rachelle and Jacqueline Block. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Greg Smith-Windsor. Others taking part were: Ryan Schoettler, crossbearer; Heather Block and Catherine Langenberger, scripture readers; Becky Zimmer, intentions; Maria Schoettler and Erika Hoehn, memorial table attendants; Greg Torwalt and Jenelle MacDonald, ushers. Music ministry was provided by director, Loretta Schugmann, organist Sarah Novecosky, and members of the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. An honor guard was formed by past and present staff and students of Annaheim School. Active pallbearers were Dan Torwalt, Garry Koop, David Wakelam, James Brown, Neil McGrath, and Bob Hoffman. PITZEL: Doreen Mary Jan. 25, 1933 - Sept. 4, 2017 After a long, hard fought battle with cancer, Doreen Pitzel, surrounded by her family, went home to her Lord and Saviour on Monday, September 4, 2017, at the age of 84 years.

Remaining to cherish Doreen’s memory are her children, Keith (Terri), Kevin(Cheryl), Garth (Doris)and Jerilyn; grandchildren, Amy, Colin, Colleen, Jared, Makena, Nathan and Stephen(Natalie); companion George McKay; sisters, Marion Wirtz and Ardel Hautzinger (Leonard); numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Fleischhacker, husband Lloyd, and brother-in-law, Roman Wirtz. Mom and Dad were married on July 14, 1954 in Pilger, Saskatchewan. The early years saw them working in many locations, eventually they moved to Regina and finally in 1963, they took up residence in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad had just over 44 years together where they enjoyed family, friends and neighbours. Many happy times were had with the Doran Bay neighbours and they always had an open house, a hearty meal and good company for the many friends and family who stopped by. They loved to travel, to dance and enjoyed the cottage life at West Hawk Lake. After Dad’s passing, Mom’s religious beliefs became stronger. She was fortunate to have a group of friends that kept her active and engaged in living life. She was very happy to have George come into her life and he renewed her zest for it. Even though their time together was short, they certainly had an impact on each other’s lives. Bringing great joy to her life was being a foster parent to 61 children, an active member of her church, a member of the Ladies of the Royal Purple, a member of the Catholic Women’s League, floral arranging, decorating, knitting and crocheting, cooking and baking, entertaining, playing cards, her time at West Hawk Lake, gardening, dancing, attending Bomber games and attending five out of town Grey Cup games. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, with Rev. Fr. Michael Wollbaum, presiding. Interment followed at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Wildcats, Rebels, Golden Bears all move to 2-0

High School football is now underway across the province, with some teams entering week one, and others entering week two.

6-Man 1A Conference 1 The Raymore Rebels looked to push their winning streak to two straight to open their season as they traveled to Milestone to take on the Cougars.

After piling up 48 points in their season opening victory over Lemberg, the Rebels offense continued firing on all cylinders scoring 40 points in a 40-0 destruction of the Cougars.

The win moves the Rebels to 2-0 on the season, and leaves them in a tie with Cupar for first place in the seven-team conference, two points up on both Ituna and Lemberg.

The Rebels will look to push their win streak to three games, and extend their lead over Ituna as they welcome the Ituna Trojans to town for their home opener.

1A Conference 4 After being blown out in their week one contest, the Viscount Vikings traveled to Carrot River on Sept. 15 to take on the Carrot River Wildcats.

The win moves the Wildcats to 2-0 on the season, and leaves them in a tie with the Wynyard Golden Bears for first place in the six-team conference.

The Wildcats will look to push their winning streak to three games as they travel to Davidson on Sept. 22 to take on the Raiders.

Wynyard The Wynyard Golden Bears pushed their high school regular season winning streak to 14 straight games on Sept. 15 as they knocked off the Assiniboia Rockets.

2A Conference Wakaw The Wakaw Warriors opened their 2017 football season at home as they welcomed the Rosthern Longhorns on Sept. 14.

The Warriors came into the season looking to build on a 3-2 regular season the year prior, which lead the Warriors into the provincial quarterfinals where they lost 72-36 to eventual provincial champion Hanley.

Offense was no concern for the Warriors last season as they averaged nearly 54 points per game in their five regular season contests, and it came through again in their season opener as it piled up 78 points en route to a 78-64 win over the Longhorns.

The Warriors will look to move to 2-0 on Sept. 22 when they travel to Big River to take on the 1-0 Rebels.

Birch Hills After finishing last season unable to play in the playoffs, due to having too many students to play six-man football, the Birch Hills Marauders opened their 2017 football season looking for a return trip to the playoffs as they took on the Big River Rebels on Sept. 14.

The Marauders came into the contest fresh off a 4-1 season, where they averaged more than 64 points per game.

Unfortunately for the Marauders, their offense was not able to pick up where it left off the season prior and they were shutout, losing 19-0.

The Marauders will look to get their first win of the season as they head out on the road to take on the Shellbrook Aardvarks.

LeRoy The competition for the pre-district title was much closer in LeRoy as Watson took home the top prize firing a 44 to edge out LeRoy by just a single stroke.

LeRoy also finished in a tie for

fifth after shooting a 52 to earn the Lightning a pair of spots at the district championships.

Wadena meanwhile, enjoyed a terrific competition as they finished third (50), fourth (51), and 12th (61), to nab a tournament high three district championship berths.

Rounding out the schools to earn district berths were Watrous and Wynyard, who each claimed two, with Watrous finishing with both golfers in a tie for eighth after rounds of 56, while Wynyard had one golfer finish in a tie for eighth, and their other golfer finish in 11th, one stroke off a four-way tie for eighth.

Imperial took home the top prize in the girls competition as she ran away from the field firing a 55 to win the tournament by 34 strokes over LeRoy, while Wadena finished another stroke back in third.

All three golfers qualified for the district championships held on Sept.

19 in LeRoy.

Quill Plains Health Care Foundation Inc. are in the early stages of a large project at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge and Health Care Centre in Watson, that would see a new addition added to the building and the east wing be renovated.

The current east wing of the building in 50 years old, and is in desperate need of an upgrade, noted Quill Plains Health Care Foundation Inc. chairperson Norma Weber during a presentation made to City of Humboldt council on Sept. 11.

Currently the east wing is home to rooms and bathrooms that are too small, very worn, and in need of some serious repairs, said Weber, who also noted doorways were too narrow, and the tub room, which is the only one in the whole facility is “very small”, and has no toilet or sink.

Weber also noted they are looking to update the air exchange to provide the residents with even better air quality.

“We also have laundry that is down in the basement and is very dungeon like. It could use a lot of improvements,” Weber told council.

The plans would see the 12 bed east wing moved into the new addition, while the East wing would see an improved laundry facility, a larger tub room and possibly add another respite, among others.

Despite needing a number of up-

grades, Weber told council that there were some great aspects to the wing, which would make it a shame to be torn down, including a modern kitchen, solid foundation, newly renovated roof, and boilers that are in great shape.

“We’ve had some architects there that did the Kelvington and Tisdale projects. They were amazed that our kitchen, how modern it was.”

The lodge is currently home to 52 total beds, and while Weber notes she does not think they have any empty beds, she says the project will not include any additional beds added to the facility.

“We’re not interested in reducing but… increasing is probably going to jeopardize our project because now you need extra staff,” she noted.

Conservative estimates on the cost of the project come in at approximately $6.2 million, noted Weber, who says the current plan will be to raise 20 per cent of the cost of the project and apply for the remaining 80 per cent through the provincial government.

Currently the project is in the early stages of development and Weber noted to council they are looking at getting the project started in five years, but says she would like to see it started in three.

In the meantime the Foundation has started fundraising for the project, and Weber notes they will be speaking with 25 communities surrounding the center asking for some financial support with the project.
