Teamsters on display at Teamster Day By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor Arden and Debbie Dust were always eager to display their horses at their farm northwest of Humboldt. At their first Teamster Day on Feb. 20, they got to show off just what their teams of horses could do, as they took spectators out to feed their herd of cattle and show them the process of training their drive horses, says Arden. Out of the Dusts’ 17 horses, 12 are trained as driving horses, says Arden. Many people brought their own teams to help out from Sedley, St. Brieux and Moose Jaw to take people around the Dust farm. A driving competition was also on the agenda. It’s a lot of work, says Debbie, but she is happy that so many people came out. “People don’t realize how much work it is to get here. You have to load horses. They have to be brushed, their feet have to be trimmed. It’s a big day for them to come too. Royden Crone brought his team of two Black Clydes, Joe and Pete, and one Belgian Clyde,

Molly, that Crone was still breaking in. All three horses were bought in Prince Albert and would have been turned into horse meat if Crone had not purchased them. It took a lot of work to train them to be able to drive his 80-year-old Massey Ferguson sled. The biggest thing Debbie wants people to take from the day is that they have learned something, either about using horses, the equipment they use, or sharing ideas with all the farmers there. At the Dust farm, there are many benefits to using horses. “Horses are docile animals. They love to work. They start everyday whether it is 40 below, says Debbie. Arden says that, costwise, using horses around his farm is a bit less money on fuel and tractor costs and he can get around his farm just as easily. “I wouldn’t exactly sell my tractor and buy a bunch of horses. You got to like what you’re doing. Arden says that through the winter, it is easier with horses.

Tisdale Motor Rewinding (1984) Ltd.

“I can (feed cattle) just as fast with horses as I could with a tractor, the way my equipment is set up. Many pieces of equipment Arden built himself, including a feed sleigh with a wood heated caboose, a 75 bushel feed box, and a hydraulic bale hauler. One round bail can even be stored on the back of the sleigh while another is picked up and hauled to the pasture with three horses. Debbie says with 75 bushels of grain and two round bales a load, around 80 head of cattle can be fed at one time. Some of the horses are up to 2,000-2,300 pounds which means a lot of muscle power. Driving horses is something that continues, that it doesn’t stop with their generation of farmers, says Debbie. Dust’s neighbour, Kayden Hoppe, is carrying on the skills of the trade. The 14-year-old took a shine to learning how to drive Dust’s team of horses last summer. The Dust’s even took Hoppe and her cousin Taylor, who also drove, to Prince Albert and placed second in a drive four

competition, where four horses are hooked up, among women who have been driving their whole lives. Hoppe is liking her time at the Dust farm. “I’ve been coming every Saturday since November and just getting to see all the animals and getting to drive and work. Both Kayden and her cousin Taylor are having a lot of fun coming over and helping out, says Debbie. The Dusts’ own daughters had a lot of fun with the horses when they were growing up, even inviting their classmates to come out for sleigh rides and wiener roasts. When the Dusts’ youngest daughter became a teacher at an inner city school in Saskatoon, she even brought her students out to the farm so they could have that experience. Some of the kids had never even been out of the city. “It was unbelievable to see. They were scared to get off the bus because of the wide open spaces, says Debbie. “We took them out for wagon rides and it was just unbelievable. See photo spread on page 4.

Message from the Minister of Agriculture

Lawrence MacAulay Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

As Minister of Agriculture, I’m honoured to be part of this special section on agriculture. Having been a farmer, I understand the challenges and dreams of our farming community. The agriculture and food industry is a huge economic driver in Saskatchewan, with record exports topping $15 billion last year. Trade is one of our government’s key priorities. We’re working hard to open new markets for farmers, while eliminating trade barriers such as Country of Origin Labelling in the United States. To get our products to market efficiently, we will work with the grain industry to build a strong grain transportation system. I also have a strong focus on innovation. I’m proud to join with Saskatchewan in joint investments of almost $15 million under the Agriculture Development Fund to support 66 research projects in forage, livestock and crops. We’re also working

with the Western Grains Research Foundation, which recently invested $21 million to help our scientists develop competitive new wheat and barley varieties. As well, we’re helping farmers take action on the environment and adjust to climate change. To help Saskatchewan farmers capture new opportunities in the future, we are sitting down with industry and governments to develop the next generation of farm programming. I’m excited about the future of agriculture in Canada. It’s a privilege to serve the best farmers in the world. I will continue to reach out to farmers, food processors and the rest of the industry to grow a great future for Canada’s agriculture and food industry.

Workshops give producers opportunity to gather new information By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter The Wascana Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds Association hosted three Agri-Environmental Group Plan Winter Workshop Series’ in Lanigan, Lumsden and Strasbourg. The Agri-Environmental Group Plan worked with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture to educate producers on the topics of grazing and forage. Wascana Upper Qu’Appelle Watersheds Association General Manager, Colleen Fennig, said that hosting these workshops is an opportunity for farmers to learn new information, especially for producers on a farm that has been family owned for many generations. “Rather then saying ‘well, that’s what my dad did and that’s what his dad did,’ it’s important to have these (workshops) so that producers can get updates on what’s out there.“ Producers and farmers also have the opportunity to ask situation specific questions, which can be beneficial for the producers because the expert can help them figure out why they are having that problem, says Fennig. Producers were given the opportunity to explore the intricacies of grazing, including different plans and how to calculate stocking rates. Since animals need to eat all year round, Fennig says touching on grazing was important.

“Grazing is not just a summer type deal for our producers. They have to feed their cattle in the fall and in the winter and there are many different options out there for them,” she said. Some of the topics that were touched on included fall grazing, swath grazing and bale grazing. Fennig says that when producers choose their grazing plan they need to be careful and protect their land from over grazing. The producers management style and their personal situation can dictate different approaches that you must consider for grazing, says Fennig. “Whether you have tame grass or native grass whether you have had enough rain or not enough rain, it’s just really important to understand how all the factors play in a situation so that you can change your management accordingly,” she said. Rain plays a major factor in the grazing process, says Fennig. “If you go all summer without any rain you’re kind of in a drought situation so you need to alter your stocking rate and your management style to accommodate that. If you have a lot of rain then that eases a little bit of pressure off of you but that doesn’t mean that you can over graze and not move your cattle in an appropriate manner either.” Being in Saskatchewan producers normally face a moisture deficit in the summer months due to the fact that they see more evaporation then they do

precipitation. The last few years have been better in that respect as it has been wetter, says Fennig, but she also says that just because it is wet, it does not mean that the producers do not need rain. “Rain still needs to fall in order for the crops and for the hay and pasture land to thrive,” she says. On the topic of forage the discussion centred around different kinds of forage including tame forage and native forage, how to manage the forage, as well as a discussion about incorporating annual crops and green feed into one of the forage rotations. Incorporating green feed and annual crops into a grazing rotation can be beneficial because it can extend the grazing season, says Fennig. “It just takes some of the pressure off of your native pasture if you have that or your tame pasture. Your land base might be limited in terms of pasture but you might have some crop land that you can plant different species, so that you can have more feed for your cattle.” Having extra feed for the producers’ cattle is important, especially in a dry years because it can help offset the lack of pasture or hay from the fields when there is a shortage of rain, says Fennig. The watershed is currently planning its summer events.

Sommer Ranch Stock Dogs

Pictured right are Bev Sommer and her three dogs (from left to right) Lexi, Tag, and Spike. photos by Taryn Riemer

Continued from page 6 “I won the Western Canadian Championship twice with two different dogs now and I’ve won Agribition. Last year in the Canadian I ended up fifth overall in the finals,” he said. Bev has also done lots of competitions, but she hasn’t been able to lately because of a knee replacement. She does plan to get back into competitions though when she’s able to. Norm said at the competitions there are a couple of different tasks they can be asked to do. At Agribition the owner and dogs have to complete an arena trial. “You go around some barrels and through a chute then you pen the sheep. The arena trials are more on time, the faster score. If you get all your points, you win,” said Norm. In the Westerns and Canadian competitions there are regular field trials and double-lift finals you will compete in. The field trial consists

of having your dog bring the sheep through a number of gates and panels in the field. They also will bring them into a shedding ring and have to separate the sheep. “Sheep don’t like to be apart from one another, so they try to get back, but your dog has to hold them and then you put them back together when the judge is satisfied and you put them in a pen,” said Norm. The double-lift final is where the dog must take a herd of sheep through panels on one part of the course. Then they have to ‘look back’ and go get another group of sheep and join them with the first group and drive them. Norm said along with going to around 10 competitions a year he has also gone out to British Columbia for the last seven years to teach a dog clinic. “It’s called a sheep camp and they have four instructors out there and we just teach people how to train their dog,” said Norm.

Norm and Bev have gone to a lot of competitions over the 20plus years of having dogs but before they can take any dog to the competition there’s a lot of training involved. “Lots of training-like practical work is the best. If you just do everyday work with them properly it’s a big difference in the dog and go to different fields and that and your dogs get more seasoned,” said Norm. Norm said when they’re training them there’s not treats involved as rewards but rather working with the stock. “If they don’t do something correct you just crawl them back and do it over and sometimes you have to help them out. Their reward is letting them have their stock, letting them bring the stock to you,” he said. Both Bev and Norm said they really enjoy working with the dogs and training them.

“They’re always happy to do whatever you want. They’re really loyal and so whatever you want them to do they’re always game to go, doesn’t matter how hard it is, muddy, rainy, yucky, they’re good to go,” said Bev. “They would die for you,” added Norm. “When you go to the kennel and you walk by a few kennels you take one well the rest are all just ‘pick me, pick me!’” Norm said he plans to go to around 10 competitions this year with two or three different dogs. He said it’s also rewarding for them to train and compete with the dogs. “They’re very smart,” he said. “You start them on voice commands, then you put a whistle to that command and boy it doesn’t take long and all of a sudden that you blow whistle and they remember.”

Drone technology could mean gains for farmers by Devan C. Tasa Recorder Editor Rapid changes in technology could mean gains in yields, said an drone advocate at a farm workshop in Melfort. Chad Colby spoke about advances in drones and agricultural technology at the seventh annual Ag Update at the Kerry Vickar Centre Feb. 11. “At the end of the day, our farms are going to be different, he said. “You know, our farming operations are changing and if whether you like it or not, I can promise you this: the changing performance at the fence row has never been any bigger. A lot of those changes are related to advances in drones and computing technologies. While agricultural drones have existed in a prototype form in the 1980s and used commercially in the 1990s, it’s only now the price points are becoming affordable to farmers. For example, a drone that would have cost $35,000 U.S. two years ago is now $3,500, 10 per cent of the cost. The same thing of thing is happening with portable computers: the iPad was only introduced in 2010, with each iteration being more powerful than the last. “I’m telling you, when you start implementing some new tools and you start seeing 40, 50, 80 bushel quarter gains, that’s a big deal, Colby said. “My challenge for you guys today is this simple: find a couple of things today and try some things different on your operation. That’s really the name of the game. While there’s options appearing for advance imagery from drone, to begin, farmers are better off with a practical, recognizable colour photo. “The fact of the matter is a good solid colour image does a lot, Colby said. Once there’s understanding of the operation from the area, then there’s

more potential for advanced imagery. Colby said he’s was also interested in satellite imagery, but the key is to know how the image matches with the ground. So he has flown drones at the same time as when the satellite is taking images to match up locations “The reason we did that is we wanted to start learning what the correlations are, he said. There are also new sensors that align with the sun and correct the light adjustments caused by cloud cover so that any photo taken with the drone will have the same lighting and therefore be comparable. Two years ago, that sensor would b in the $35,000 U.S. range. Now it’s $3,500. Thermal imaging is also becoming cheaper, with cameras that can be attached to cell phones costing $250 U.S. Colby expects thermal imaging cameras will be on drones along with regular ones at an affordable price “Thermal is going to be the next revolution and finally those cost points are getting lower in 2016, he said. Yet there are challenges with using drones. Farmers will have to learn aviation rules and learn how to pilot a drone safely, something that only pilots are familiar with. Yet Colby expects that children growing up with the technology will learn how to operate them safely, like children are taught how to properly use firearms safely. “The fact of the matter is this: our [three-year-old] daughter is never going to have an issue flying a drone, because she’s been taught from that age, he said. While drone costs are going down, Colby said it’s worth getting a first drone now so that farmers can play around and learn the technology become it becomes more common.

Seeding preparation key to successful pulse crop Continued from page 15 There’s a variety of seed treatments available, with some only attacking one disease, while others need a tag-mix partner. The equipment available to the farmer is also a consideration. Anderson said experts can help farmers come up with solutions. It’s important to note that pulse seed is more fragile than cereals. “Ideally, if we could be running these seeds through conveyors, it’s going to be the gentlest,” Anderson said, adding rotary drum-style traders are also okay because they are soft. Augers can cause damage, but if that’s the only option,

then it’s important to wet the seed down, possibly applying more water than recommended for dry or cold seed. “If we’re bouncing around these dry little marbles, they’re going to bang into one another and we’re going to open the seed coat up and it just gives the opportunity for disease to come in and just take over,” he said. Then it’s time to inoculate the field with rhizobia, which gather in the roots of the pulses and fix nitrogen. It’s important to use inoculant with rhizobia that is compatible with the crop. Granular inoculant is the best,

followed by peat-based inoculants. It’s important to treat the seed before inoculating, as the inoculated seed needs to be in the ground before the rhizobia die. Liquid inoculants is the cheapest, but it is the least pure and has compatibility issues. “Without good inoculation we’re really limiting our potential,” Anderson said. The specialist said that farmers should talk to experts to help them choose the best options for their pulse crop. “You need to have these conversations so you’re not limiting your opportunities,” he said.

2016 looking good for producers By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor The 2015 farm season was not the best for a lot of farmers. But for Tex Prete, Farm World CEO, the 2016 season is looking good in the early months. With prime moisture conditions in the fall and such a lower than average snowfall in the winter months, the spring is looking great for seeding conditions. “It appears, at least so far this winter, that snowfall is going to remain below average, which should bode well for moisture conditions for the

spring seeding season. With adequate moisture last fall at freeze up, spring seeding conditions should be terrific in the Humboldt area.” From listening to consumers in the area, Prete says that many local farmers are really getting into precision equipment and higher technology based tools to help with farming. Many precision tools have GPS mapping to tell the farmer where they have already seeded or sprayed. The farmer then has the option of turning off zones to save time and cost reducing overlap and highly saturated zones. “As input costs for seeding continue

to rise, our customers are saving the input costs on overlap seeding with this technology,” says Prete. Reducing their environmental footprint has also been higher on farmers’ priorities, says Prete, with New Holland meeting emission standards with diesel powered equipment. “The HI-SCR system that New Holland uses allows the engine to be tuned for maximum performance and efficiency and deal with emissions outside of the engine combustion system.” All diesel models have some sort of system with this recycling model. “All of the 100hp and greater engines are using a Hi-SCR system to deal with emissions. This means that the

emissions are controlled after the exhaust has left the engine,” says Prete. Farmers have reported fuel savings of 15-20 per cent. When it comes to the crops that will be planted in 2016, Prete says that the crop varieties are looking similar to 2015. Farmers have been having a lot of luck with crops like oats, pulse, and canola, and some farmers in Southern regions are trying peas and lentils. Faba beans might be growing in popularity and might have a higher production rate but farmers are a bit more hesitant to spend money on higher costing seed. “Overall, we think crop rotations will remain fairly normal,” says Prete.
