TO OUR GUESTS ON JUNE 29, 1918, THE BROADMOOR FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS TO THE WORLD. FROM THAT POINT TO NOW, WE HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK.

However, in this time of Centennial celebration, we are taking an opportunity to reflect on our beginnings, as we also look forward to what we might expect in the next 100 years. While there is no crystal ball to predict the future, the one thing we know is that our commitment to excellence is steadfast—as it was with Spencer and Julie Penrose, who envisioned not just a great resort, but a true destination. While we continue to improve our main campus and make additional changes that reflect our times, we have not lost sight of the great responsibility we have to maintain the stewardship and independence that has always been our foundation.

Along with continually striving to improve our service and facilities, we are excited to add to our family as well. In 2016, the purchase of Sea Island Resort in Georgia was announced, placing our two historic and iconic resorts under one ownership and forming The Broadmoor–Sea Island Corporation. Sea Island—with five miles of private oceanfront, classically beautiful facilities, award-winning golf, dining, spa and a wide array of activities—is the perfect complement to all we have to offer here at the gateway to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It is a synergy that is virtually unmatched anywhere in the world. Between the two resorts, we hold a total of seven sets of Forbes Five Star awards. That is as humbling as it is remarkable.

We are also focusing on our golf legacy in this issue, as we prepare to host the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, June 27 to July 1.

This will be our eighth USGA tournament, and our 23rd major golf event since The Broadmoor’s original Donald Ross course hosted its first tournament benefitting the Red Cross in 1918. We are pleased to announce that John Elway of the Denver Broncos is the honorary chair. An NFL Hall of Fame member and an avid golfer, there is no one better to represent Colorado as the face of this National Championship.

This magazine also marks the third of a three-part collectors’ set focusing on the Centennial, where you can learn more about our history and how it ties to what lies ahead. To give you even more insight, a new book full of rarely seen images chronicles our rich and unusual development. It reveals the incredible foresight of our founders, how they came here, what drove them and how they set the framework for all that we are today. This limited-edition book, titled “The Broadmoor Story,” is available only at the resort and through our online e-store.

Julie, he ordered this custom-built beauty with a V-8 engine and specially designed Hibberd & Darrin body. The Penroses traveled to France to pick up the car, and enjoyed its appointments and luxurious ride during a month-long tour of Europe.

1936 V12 CADILLAC TOURING CARS

Penrose purchased this model to become part of his Gray Line Touring Company, which he acquired in 1936 and boasted the world’s largest fleet of Cadillacs.

Guests utilized these cars for sightseeing trips, touring and excursions to popular attractions. In pleasant weather, you will often see a fully restored version of this model parked in front of the resort’s main entrance. It’s also available for special events.

1937 FLATHEAD V8 CADILLAC TOURING CAR

This 1937 custom-made Cadillac was part of the original fleet that served the hotel through the 1950s. The number of these elegant vehicles reached a high of 13 in 1956. The car has been meticulously restored to mint condition and is available for viewing at the resort, as well as for special events and weddings.

T

HE BROADMOOR’S RELATIONship with Cadillac spans more than seven decades. From the 1930s though the 1950s, the resort had one of the largest private fleets of Cadillac vehicles in the world. The cars were used to transport guests to and from the resort, for sightseeing tours around the region and for special occasions. The brand was also a favorite of resort founder Spencer Penrose, who personally selected several custom models for the resort and for his own use.

Today’s guests also benefit from this Cadillac connection. Cadillac Escalade SUVs are exclusively used to transport guests to and from the resort’s Wilderness Experience properties, and guests may also reserve a complimentary threehour test drive of several new Cadillac models through The Broadmoor’s Ride and Drive program. Two fully restored models from The Broadmoor’s historic fleet are also available with chauffeurs for use by bridal parties, during corporate events and other special occasions. Here’s a look at several notable vehicles from the resort’s history:

A

RGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ICE CENTERS IN THE UNITED States, The Broadmoor Ice Palace was born from the imagination and foresight of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose after seeing the Olympic gold medalist and Hollywood star Sonja Henie perform. His vision was clear: Transform the indoor riding arena he built in 1930 into a place where guests could not only skate, but also enjoy watching ice shows and exhibition hockey games. It was the beginning of what would be yet another Broadmoor legend.

While the original Ice Palace, renamed The Broadmoor World Arena in 1961, no longer stands, it still remains as a cornerstone of skating sports. To honor all the Ice Palace meant, and all the great athletes and coaches who called it home, The Broadmoor hosted its first of many Centennial celebration events on January 20, 2018.

Called “A Legacy of Ice,” the event raised funds for the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund and USA Hockey Foundation. It was a perfect way to support the next generation of athletes, while honoring all those who came before them—not only in figure skating and hockey, but in speed skating and curling as well.

FLAMINGOS ONCE 2 FROLICKED IN THE FOUNTAINS Topped by a glass roof and decorated with live plants and trees, La Taverne’s Garden Room opened in 1953 and featured a large fountain that, for a time, included a pair of resident flamingos.

While most diners found them amusing, the flamingos were quickly relocated to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The Broadmoor’s 35-by-80foot indoor swimming pool was the largest in the West when the resort opened in 1918. Lined with blue-andwhite ceramic tiles, the pool was filled with mountain spring water and purified by filters and a powerful violet-ray machine. The indoor pool was closed in 1961 and covered over.

THERE’S AN OUT4 OF-STEP DANCER ON THE CEILING The Broadmoor’s main mezzanine, fronting the lake, is painted with an elaborate fresco that depicts two dancing cherubs. A closer look reveals that the male figure’s feet are reversed, with his right foot on the left and his left foot on the right.

Artist Giovanni John Smeraldi included a similar intentional mistake when he painted a Grand Central Station ceiling.

It’s believed that the artist included these purposeful errors to symbolize that, while all human creations are flawed, only God can achieve perfection.

A double chair lift carried 600 people an hour. The area closed permanently in 1991.

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the highest cog railway in the world and the highest railway in America. Zalmon Simmons built the railway in 1892, and sold it to Spencer Penrose in 1925.

THE STORY OF THE 9 WONDER ROAD ENDS WITH A TWIST Mr. Penrose constructed the 7-mile-long Cheyenne Mountain Highway, nicknamed the Wonder Road, in 1925 as a means to reach his Cheyenne Mountain Lodge, atop Cheyenne Mountain. The road cost more than $1 million to build, and rises more than 3,000 feet in elevation over slightly more than a square mile.

It was featured in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” as the most-crooked highway up the steepest mountain.

A BEAR STOLE 10 THE SHOW DURING THE 2008 U.S. SENIOR OPEN

During televised coverage of the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, held at The Broadmoor, a black bear wandered onto the course during the second round of the tournament. The bear crossed the tee box on hole No. 14 soon after Mark McNulty hit his drive. Tom Watson’s backswing was interrupted by shouts of “Bear!” and an NBC commentator was seen running the opposite direction down the fairway.

Main has, for decades, set a tone of understated luxury that flows through the rest of the property. Until now, however, it had remained relatively untouched since the hotel opened in 1918. The lobby has now been completely transformed into a spacious entry, with guest areas, a more open layout and fireplaces. The beautiful, Italian marble-tiled floor extends past the lobby and down the hallway that leads to Café Julie’s. Handsome wooden cases located throughout the lobby contain artifacts from The Broadmoor’s collection and help tell its story.

“There’s a clear sense of place and sense of arrival now when you enter Broadmoor Main,” Damioli says. “In addition to removing the walls around the former Espresso News, the walls around the marble staircase going up to the Mezzanine level have been eliminated as well, so the staircase has a floating effect to give the room more expansive sightlines.”

The newly refreshed lobby exudes the stately luxury and timeless grace for which the resort is known, while providing an updated space for guests to meet, mingle and enjoy. Seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary luxury is a theme that runs throughout all the latest building projects at The Broadmoor.

A MAN OF VISION Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose had grand plans for his beloved Broadmoor resort and the Colorado Springs region—and he invested massive resources to achieve them. Projects he undertook include building the Pikes Peak Scenic Highway, Cheyenne Mountain Lodge and a road to reach the summit, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pauline Chapel, and The Broadmoor Ice Palace and Broadmoor World Arena, among numerous other enhancements.

A Colorado Springs local reflects on ways the resort has grown within her heritage. BY BECKY HURLEY

T

he year was 1966. I was on my way to meet high school friends at The Broadmoor resort’s former drugstore and soda fountain, down the hall from the Main Hotel’s magnificent lobby. Rumor had it that our popular gathering spot stood over the site of a swimming pool built years ago by the hotel’s original owner, Spencer Penrose. We always wondered if it was still there.

But what struck me most was the lobby, with its gleaming marble floors and coffered ceiling panels, all framed by walls showcasing historic vignettes and classic European and Westernthemed paintings. A stunning marble staircase spiraled up to the Mezzanine above, and deep, rich wood panels enveloped the front desk. The scene was more than my teenage mind could comprehend, and it made an unforgettable impression.

A lot has happened at The Broadmoor since then. My husband and I live nearby and, over the years, have witnessed the Forbes Five Star, AAA Five Diamond resort’s thoughtful evolution firsthand.

It’s as if the owners who followed Spencer and Julie Penrose—El Pomar Foundation, followed by Oklahoma Publishing’s Gaylord family and Denver’s Anschutz family—were somehow able to ask the Penroses, “How would you like to preserve the rich legacy of your beloved ‘Grande Dame’ while also taking it to the next level?”

Since the resort’s purchase in 2011 by the Anschutz family, its current owners have continued to invest tremendous resources into renovating and expanding The Broadmoor’s offerings. Major improvement projects

include the 2014 reimagining of Broadmoor West, which added new entertainment venues and dining options, along with remodeled guest rooms. Additionally, The Broadmoor’s Wilderness Properties—The Ranch at Emerald Valley, Cloud Camp and Fly Fishing Camp—represent a new category of luxurious accommodations where guests can experience Colorado’s magnificent outdoors.

“The owners have shown such commitment and enthusiasm, not only in maintaining The Broadmoor’s legacy, but also in building for its future,” says Bob McGrath, The Broadmoor’s director of engineering.

As The Broadmoor celebrates its Centennial year, ambitious projects are again underway.

I got a behind-the scenes-tour this spring with McGrath as the project was nearing completion. Watching contractors peel away layers of plaster and panels, I imagined Julie Penrose herself selecting furnishings and upholstery, and supervising the installation of chandeliers and paintings.

“We found hand-painted European wallpaper hidden behind walls and millwork from 100 years ago,” McGrath says.

The marble staircase I admired as a youth is now suspended from the ceiling, providing more room for seating below. All the wonderful handpainted frescoes on the walls have been preserved. Rich paintings from the American West, detailed carvings and authentic materials complete the historically minded refresh.

By the way, there really is the foundation of an old swimming pool below. It held hidden treasures from The Broadmoor’s history.

ON THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF THE BROADMOOR’S sprawling campus, nestled near the foothills, sits a greenhouse. In a planter along the back wall of the 2,000-square-foot space, leafy green culantro and lantern-like sweet Scotch Bonnet peppers wave lazily in the humid air. Several days a week, Broadmoor Chef Mario Viguie stops in to check on his small crop. “I think Mario would live up here if he could,” says David Patterson, The Broadmoor’s Executive Chef, during a tour of the facility.

In early 2017, Viguie contacted a Puerto Rican agriculturist about obtaining seeds for the peppers and culantro, a hard-to-find herb in the mainland United States that grows wild in Viguie’s native Puerto Rico. Once in hand, Viguie tapped the childhood gardening lessons he learned from his grandfather and got to HOMEGROWN The work tending the soil and babying Broadmoor’s chefs, his plants. Puerto Rican marinade, stew and pork dish,” Viguie says. Executive Chef David Patterson, who oversees all the dining operations at the resort, calls Viguie’s nod to home something else. “I call it heritage and experiential knowledge,” he says.

Look closely at most of The Broadmoor restaurants’ menus and you’ll see—and better yet, taste— subtle odes to a chef ’s culinary background. At Restaurant 1858, for example, the menu has a decidedly Western focus with dishes such as Wild Boar Green Chile and Rocky Mountain Trout cooked in castiron pans. When Viguie came aboard in 2016, he dug deep to build on the concept. “I wanted to bring Puerto Rican cuisine in, but that didn’t really fit. So I went the other direction when, back in the day, Colorado belonged to Mexico,” Viguie says. “Mexico and Puerto Rico share a lot of the same flavors and ingredients, so I combined those flavors with my Latin-Spanish culture to bring added depth to dishes.” Order off the menu at 1858 today and you’ll find that Viguie’s soffrito flavors the rice and beans and plays a primary role in the Churrasco Steak, a traditional recipe of marinated flank steak and chimichurri, served here with loaded potato wedges, queso, pico de gallo and pickled jalapeños.

“There’s this newfound reverence for American regional cooking—and it’s a huge factor in what we’re doing at The Broadmoor,” says Patterson, who grew up in Kentucky. “A lot of us who wanted to be great culinarians felt obligated to leave home to go do it. We went to New York, to San Francisco and to Europe. Now those chefs are getting back to their roots and embracing the stuff they grew up with.”

At Summit, The Broadmoor’s high-end contemporary regional American restaurant, Chef de Cuisine Luis Young embraces foods from all of the Americas—North America, South America, Latin America—mixed with a healthy sprinkling of global inspiration. Young, originally from Panama, spent time interning at molecular gastronomy–powerhouse Alinea in Chicago and cooking at avantgarde El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, and the legendary French Laundry in California’s Napa Valley. It’s only recently, he says, that he’s found his own style, and it’s on full view at Summit. “It’s based on my own experiences and whatever flows into it,” Young says.

For a taste of what that looks like, order the grilled Spanish octopus with fingerling potatoes, chorizo and what’s labeled as cilantro chimichurri on the menu. Young says it’s actually aji pique, a Panamanian and Colombian sauce, which is similar in style to chimichurri but made with habaneros. Young considers the dish a perfect representation of his cooking: The aji pique’s tangy and sharp Latin notes play well against the iconic Spanish trifecta of octopus, potatoes and chorizo.

But Young’s influences are multifaceted, and when he came aboard at Summit he wanted to create a menu item that would be an instant hit. For his canvas he chose sole a la meunière, a traditional French fish dish bathed in a lemony brown butter sauce. When you rework a classic, however, there’s the inherent challenge of managing expectations.

“Everyone has an opinion on how it should taste,” Young says. “So how do we give them something

that’s recognizable but still new?” The final version, which has quickly become one of Summit’s top sellers, pays homage to the prized original but with more finesse and depth thanks to a pinwheel presentation and a thin layer of decadent lobster and shrimp mousse.

“I tell my chefs that 80 percent of the menu should be solid, very well understood and approachable,” says John Johnstone, The Broadmoor’s vice president of food and beverage and a certified master chef. “The other 20 percent is your sandbox, and 20 percent of your guests will play with you. I’m sensitive to those guests who are coming to eat and the 20 percent of guests who come to dine. There’s a difference.”

And this gets to the heart of The Broadmoor’s many offerings. With multiple restaurants on property, as well as additional cafés and lounges, there are dishes on every menu for every degree of guest.

At Penrose Room, the only Forbes Five Star, AAA Five Diamond restaurant in the state of Colorado, Chef de Cuisine Max Robbins helms the kitchen. After spending seven years working for Thomas Keller, who is arguably the most influential of American chefs, at Per Se in New York and then the French Laundry in Napa, Robbins is steeped in the tradition of French cooking. Robbins loves the regimented structure of the cuisine but, he says, “you can still play along the lines. I think that’s the beauty of cooking; everything is so personal.”

Outside the French genre, Robbins cites California cuisine—and the task of taking a comfort food and refining it—as his biggest culinary influences. Both threads come through in dishes such as the roasted cabbage appetizer. Robbins dresses up the humble vegetable with the rich orange flesh of persimmons, toasted walnuts and marinated beets. The finishing touch comes from a golden drizzle of honey made

by The Broadmoor’s bees.

The bees, all of which have been collected from wild swarms, are housed at a nearby ranch and are capable of producing 500 pounds of honey a year. It feels only fitting that, at this verdant nexus of growth and creativity, the bees are busy making an elixir that is nothing if not the product of time and place.

“We want people to see the integrity behind our chocolate production,” says Adam Thomas, The Broadmoor’s Executive Pastry Chef. “Our new kitchen gives us a chance to educate our guests about the chocolate-making process, and our artisanal approach ensures fresh chocolate daily.”

The Broadmoor uses a proprietary chocolate blend made exclusively for the resort by premium chocolate manufacturer Valrhona. It’s a partnership that’s been more than a year in the making, with nine different trial recipes used to find the perfect blend.

“We gave Valrhona a clear outline of how we wanted the chocolate to taste, and how it had to be versatile enough to use as the base chocolate in our desserts,” Thomas says. “We ended up with a 66 percent dark chocolate blend that uses beans sourced from Madagascar, the Dominican Republic and Ghana.”

Guests may also take a sampling of chocolates home with them in attractive gift boxes featuring Café Julie’s logo. “Our custom chocolate boxes are like jewelry boxes—they slide out instead of opening from the top,” Thomas says. “Inside each box are notes with the Cafe Julie’s story, and details about our Valrhona private chocolate blend.”

COOKING CLUB In 1912, Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose, along with friend Chester Alan Arthur II, son of President Chester A. Arthur, decided to start a men’s Cooking Club in Colorado Springs. In 1917, as The Broadmoor hotel was taking shape, Penrose built a clubhouse at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, where Cooking Club dinners have been hosted ever since. While the menu varies, two of the official Cooking Club meals—Spencer Penrose Day in January and Club Day in July—feature the same menu each year. Penrose endowed the annual celebrations in the 1930s so that the club could carry on the tradition.

ZIP THROUGH THE AIR

Designed to pair premium thrills with maximum safety and absolute fun, The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, one of the top five zip line courses in the world, offers a thrilling experience as guests soar high above rocky outcroppings and forested canyons on zip lines ranging in distance from 240 to 1,800 feet, with some moderate hiking. Tours include up to eight participants with two professional guides.

The Woods course features five zip lines, while The Fins course also has five zip lines and includes two 200-foot suspension-bridge crossings and a thrilling 180-foot controlled rappel at the end. Try the combined fourhour adventure for the ultimate Soaring experience. No prior experience is required and each trip begins with a 15-minute ground

school to go over equipment and safety procedures. Participants must weigh at least 90 pounds and no more than 250 pounds.

B I R DS OF A FE AT H ER The Broadmoor’s falconry program offers an up-close-and-personal experience with birds of prey through small-group encounters with these regal animals. Our resident expert, Deanna Curtis, discusses what to expect.

HOW SHOULD PEOPLE PREPARE? ARE KIDS ALLOWED? Yes! Kids older than 5 can participate, and actually I think kids get so much out of it. We’ll spend time outside learning about falconry and seeing how the birds track prey. It’s thrilling to have them fly so close and see these birds in action.

HOW MANY BIRDS ARE LIVING AT THE BROADMOOR? Broadmoor Outfitters keeps eight birds right now: five Harris hawks, two saker falcons and a Eurasian eagle-owl.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH FALCONRY? A volunteer brought a bird to my sons’ Cub Scout troop, and I was hooked. There was something about the connection to a wild animal that really captivated me. I started volunteering with the organization, and eventually this became my life’s work.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE FROM THE EXPERIENCE? Ultimately I hope it strengthens their connection with nature.

Set out on a treasure hunt fit for the whole family with The Broadmoor Hunt, a geocaching adventure that’s fun for everyone.

For the uninitiated, geocaching at The Broadmoor relies on a GPS-based app for your phone, which guides your team along a trail to an unknown destination.

Using GPS and the phone’s camera, The Broadmoor Hunt incorporates historical tidbits among the clues throughout the property. It’s an activity where even the youngest kids can lead the way and the whole family will delight in discovering these secret stashes.

Try the “Tie a Fly/Catch a Fish” class at Fish House, lakeside near the East golf course, for a quick intro to the sport or, for a deeper immersion, opt for The Broadmoor Fly Fishing School. All equipment is provided.

CRUISE DIRT-PACKED TRAILS ON A MOUNTAIN BIKE

For a breathtaking Colorado experience, book a guided mountain bike ride through spectacular alpine terrain. Our experienced pros will take you on a gradual downhill slope on historic Gold Camp Road. After the downhill section of the ride, bikers are transported to the Garden of the Gods to explore the trails among the massive rock formations of this natural wonder. These tours are per-

See firsthand about the habits of falcons and owls, and even work with our trained hawk, Spencer, who will fly to your gloved hand for a small reward. hile Broadmoor Outfitters offers unique experiences for individual guests, the resort also offers nearly 20 group teambuilding competitions with playful names like Sticky Situation, Treacherous Transfer, Summertime Snowman, Tiny Bike Race and Air Cannon Bowling. Each activity is designed to promote problemsolving and camaraderie, such as:

DOMESTIC DEMOLITION Groups are given materials to build a miniature “house,” and then the structural integrity of the dwellings are tested as the homes come under a 360-degree barrage of air cannons firing beanbags.

EXPLORE SEVEN FALLS

Don’t miss this stunning natural beauty, located less than a mile from The Broadmoor. Nicknamed “The Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado,” the cascading seven-tiered waterfall is simply magnificent. Walk the 224 steps to the top of the falls to access shaded hiking trails along a meandering stream. Shuttle transportation or a short walk from The Broadmoor delivers you to the canyon.

Relax with a bite or a beverage at Restaurant 1858, the Colorado Gold Rush– themed restaurant at the base of the falls.

For a more extreme fitness adventure, tackle the Seven Falls Challenge. You don’t have to be an Olympics-worthy athlete to accept the challenge but—for the groups of two to 12 people who do undertake this adventure—it will test your endurance and resolve.

A certified fitness trainer accompanies groups throughout the challenge, which begins with a 1.5-mile bike ride from the resort to Seven Falls. Participants then set out on a 2-mile trail run to the top of the falls and through the canyon. Intermittent body weight exercises along the way up the ante. At the base of Seven Falls once more, participants then remount their bikes and cycle back to the hotel via dirt-packed trails. In all the challenge encompasses 10 miles of scenery and 700 feet in elevation gain.

This year we’ll be incorporating songs from “White Christmas,” since Debby Boone’s motherin-law, Rosemary Clooney, starred in the film.

After two years of planning and building, the Ross-designed golf course debuts with a July 4 fundraising match between the teams of “Long Jim” Barnes and Chick Evans against Jock Hutchison and Warren Wood—the first three of whom are now in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK Scottish-born Donald Ross designed many of the country’s top-rated courses— including Pinehurst No. 2, the Aronimink Golf Club and the Inverness Club. When Ross surveyed The Broadmoor property, he was delighted by the prospect of creating a mountain course but felt he did not have enough room to lay out the course in what he considered to be the optimum orientation. Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose did not hesitate to purchase 80 additional acres so that Ross could transform the dry, rolling land into a golfer’s paradise.

When it opened, the course at The Broadmoor was the highest course in elevation in the country, and Ross deemed it his “best work.”

CALLAWAY BREAKS OUT Callaway Golf CEO Chip Brewer on the new Jailbreak technology and upping the “wow” factor. B Y J O N R I Z Z I

PHILADELPHIA NATIVE CHIP BREWER IS FLYING HIGH— and not just because his Eagles won their first Super Bowl in February. Brewer is CEO of Carlsbad, California–based Callaway Golf, and two weeks before the big game, his company’s new Rogue drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons earned unanimous acclaim at Orlando’s annual PGA Merchandise Show, known as “the major of the golf industry.”

Such adulation should come as no surprise. The Rogue driver improves on the revolutionary “Jailbreak” energy-transfer technology (so named for the parallel titanium bars connecting the crown and sole behind the ultra-thin clubface) that made last year’s Callaway Epics the world’s best-selling line of clubs and propelled the company to global dominance in every category.

“They have the best product on the market, as well as the best service,” says Russ Miller, the PGA Director of Golf at The Broadmoor, which sells and rents Callaway clubs and balls exclusively in its golf shop. “We have high expectations for such a partnership, and Callaway has exceeded them all.”

But it wasn’t always so. Six years ago Callaway—which had revolutionized golf in the 1990s with its oversized and shot-straightening titanium Big Bertha drivers—found itself in the rough. By the time Brewer arrived in 2012, he says, the iconic brand had “become a little distracted. It wasn’t leading in the equipment space.”

A Harvard MBA who spent 10 successful years at Adams Golf, Brewer immediately made his presence felt at Callaway, shocking the research and development team by rejecting the first prototype clubs he saw.

He pressed the team to step up its game in much the same way as company founder Ely Callaway might have done. “He was a

heck of a maverick, visionary and bold,” Brewer says, describing the man who died in 2001 at age 82. “We need to be bold, not just making little tweaks that look good in the lab. We want to impress consumers. They have to hit it and go, ‘Wow.’ ” The R&D team responded by producing the extremely popular X-Hot line of drivers, irons and fairway metals, which featured “cup-face” technology to increase ball speed—the velocity at which the ball jumps off the club—and distance.

The hits have kept coming: The revitalized Great Big Bertha, the Apex and XR irons, the Mack Daddy wedges, the Odyssey Versa and the Toulon putters, the Epics and Rogues. They all annually fill Golf Digest’s “Hot List” and the bags of professional, amateur and weekend players.

Brewer credits much of the company’s success to the more than $30 million it annually spends on R&D. “We do not launch a product unless it is right,” he says.

Brewer has also developed a team to do advanced research with a number of composite-metal developers and casters, as well as collaborate with The Boeing Company on aerodynamics.

Callaway has developed every club since the XR-16 in concert with Boeing. “The whole Jailbreak concept resulted from that relationship,” Brewer says.

Callaway has also leveraged its relationship with five-time major champion Phil Mickelson. “He’s been incredibly instrumental in all areas, particularly in developing our wedges and the Chrome Soft balls,” Brewer says.

In addition to other major — CALLAWAY CEO champions, such as Sergio GarCHIP BREWER cia, Danny Willett, Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson, Tom Watson, Michelle Wie and Yani Tseng, Callaway is “running the table on the young-gun talent,” Brewer says, referring to rising stars Thomas Pieters, Xander Schauffele, Alexander Noren, Daniel Berger, Kevin Kisner, Si Woo Kim, Curtis Luck, Emma Talley, Morgan Pressel, Mariah Stackhouse and dozens more.

“Some of the best golfers in the world play our clubs, and the average golfer also finds comfort in playing them,” Brewer says. “But we’re not trying to be all things to all people. We’re a premium brand that believes in innovation and technology—and in giving consumers that ‘wow’ factor.”

“With so much information out there, right at your fingertips, it can be tough to sort out what’s the most helpful for you,” Hrovat says.

Two years ago, Hrovat came across The Broadmoor’s Women’s Weekend of Wellness program.

The health-and-wellness professional also recently became a licensed real estate agent. Juggling two careers, she knows the importance of finding time for herself. THE BROADMOOR BATHS The Broadmoor’s “thermo hydrotherapeutic department,” an early version of what is now known as The Spa at The Broadmoor, was a highlight when the resort first opened in 1918. The facility was very advanced for its day and boasted two separate but equally appointed areas, making The Broadmoor one of the first resorts in the country with dedicated facilities for both men and women. Guests were advised to dress in their rooms and to take the service elevator directly to the baths. Beginning with the introduction of The Ranch at Emerald Valley in 2014, The Broadmoor has established a collection of three unique properties that capture the essence of several quintessential Colorado outdoor experiences in luxuriously elevated ways. Two of the properties, The Ranch at Emerald Valley and Cloud Camp, have historic ties to the resort. Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose built a grand adobe lodge atop

Cheyenne Mountain, the site of today’s Cloud Camp, for the same reason guests enjoy its location today—as an intimate, magical retreat to get away from it all while enjoying the stunning views and quality time with family and friends.

Penrose and several friends also built a private compound in a remote mountain valley, now known as The Ranch at Emerald Valley, where they enjoyed long walks, fishing and riding horses along mountain trails, as well as evenings filled with fine food, plentiful drink and lots of laughter. While the amenities and offerings have all been upgraded to exceed modern expectations, The Ranch’s appeal remains the same.

Nestled in a lush valley, The Ranch at Emerald Valley is hemmed on three sides by mountains and surrounded by the Pike National Forest. The Ranch also features stables, a main lodge, hot tubs and two ponds with fishing and canoeing.

Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose purchased the cabins where The Ranch sits in 1923 and originally named it Camp Vigil, after a nearby peak. He and his wife, Julie, and their friends enjoyed the property in much the same way as guests do today—as a secluded mountain retreat where they could enjoy the natural setting, as well as fine food and drink with their friends and family.

While there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to be had at The Ranch, there’s also an intimate, relaxing vibe that encourages rest and reflection. It’s this unique alchemy that attracts couples, families and small groups to partake in this special place.

ACTIVITIES

The Ranch at Emerald Valley is an all-inclusive experience, and guests may partake in as many activities as they wish. In addition to guided hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, archery, fishing and lawn games are also popular pastimes. A morning yoga session, a soak in one of the outdoor hot tubs, or simply relaxing in a hammock are also popular.

FOOD AND DRINK

Included with your breakfast are homemade cinnamon rolls, cowboy coffee, a variety of fresh fruits and cereals and other goodies. A buffet-style lunch includes a variety of options, and in the late afternoon, ranch hands offer baskets of freshly made doughnuts and other snacks.

The lofty Fire Tower Suite, built from a decommissioned watchtower and located on a rock promontory high above the camp, offers the ultimate in privacy with sleeping quarters on its first floor, and a wraparound deck and a study on a second level that affords 360-degree views.

ACTIVITIES

Guided hikes, mule rides, archery, pickleball and other activities are offered daily, with sunrise yoga sessions, arts and crafts, lawn games, and more also on offer. Each afternoon, guests may join a chef in Cloud Camp’s kitchen for the legendary Cooking Club, picking up tips and sipping a glass of wine as they help prepare a dish for that evening’s meal. With its cloistered environment and top-ofthe-world views, Cloud Camp is well-suited for couples, families with older children and small groups.

In fact, Spencer Penrose originally built Cheyenne Mountain Lodge at the summit as a retreat for honeymooners to enjoy quiet time alone and to experience what he considered to be the most beautiful sunrise in the world.

Today, Cloud Camp’s main lodge sits on the same foundation as Penrose’s original building. Built in the iconic style of America’s National Park architecture, the newly built lodge features a bar area and great room anchored by large stone fireplaces at each end. Ample windows and a large wraparound porch provide stunning views in all directions, including of Pikes Peak, Colo-

rado Springs and the plains beyond. Looking down as a gathering sea of clouds roll in and blanket the land below, it’s easy to believe that you’re all alone in this Shangri-La at the top of the world.

GETTING THERE

There are three options to access Cloud Camp, each with its own appeal: Guests may choose a chauffeured ride in a Cadillac Escalade to the camp, or navigate dirt-packed Cheyenne Mountain Road and its 17 switchbacks atop one of the camp’s sure-footed mules. Alternatively, a vigorous 3.5-mile hike to the camp helps make that evening’s meal taste even more satisfying.

ACCOMMODATIONS

A dozen comfortably appointed one- and two-bedroom guest cabins are nestled into the forested summit, with a pair of outdoor hot tubs located nearby. Additionally, the

The evening meal is a highlight of a day at Cloud Camp. Guests meet and mingle for cocktail hour before finding a seat at a long communal table. The menu, served in four courses with a variety of options for each course, is patterned after the classic cooking of the 1920s and ’30s, when Spencer Penrose was running his Cheyenne Lodge, albeit often with a contemporary twist.

A small bowl of wild mushroom bisque or spicy gumbo might start the meal, followed

by Rocky Mountain trout or a roast of Colorado lamb. A small salad helps aid digestion, before a surprise share platter is presented to the table, followed by an array of desserts; all accompanied by a selection of house wines.

ELEVATED EVENTS

The Overlook is a separate, 1,500-square-foot event space ideal for groups of 10 to 70 people. The open, airy room features floor-toceiling windows and a wrap-around deck, as well as Wi-Fi and all the audiovisual equipment needed to show a personal slideshow during a wedding reception or a presentation during a corporate retreat. Full-service food and beverage are also available.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Some guests choose to depart Cloud Camp with a hike along a trail that leads to Cheyenne Canyon and The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, where, after an exhilarating few hours navigating the zip line course, they finish with a controlled rappel into the canyon to cap their adventure in style.

From novice fishermen to experienced anglers, this Orvis-endorsed lodge is the place to experience some of the West’s best fishing.

LAY OF THE LAND

The Broadmoor Fly Fishing Camp is situated along a private five-mile stretch of the Tarryall River in southern Colorado’s Lost Creek Wilderness. The Orvis-endorsed lodge features prime fishing habitat, with a variety of terrain both above and below water that’s well-suited for every style of fishing, from roll casting into a tree-lined pool to nymphing below a tumbling cascade or hucking a dry fly for distance. The camp maintains very low numbers, and its dedicated staff of seasoned guides ensures that everyone from novice fisherman to experienced anglers enjoys a superb experience.

The guides and Camp Manager Scott Tarrant are on-site around the clock, and they also take care of everything from cooking and cleaning to gardening and stream maintenance, in addition to guiding small groups on the water with a two guests to each guide ratio.

When guests aren’t on the water enjoying world-class trout fishing, many enjoy exploring the network of trails that wind through the surrounding Lost Creek Wilderness. Guided horseback riding is also offered. Cornhole boards and other yard games are a fun diversion, as is sitting around a campfire in the evening and trying to count the endless ribbon of stars that flow overhead.

While most of the fishing is catch-and-release, guests also have the option of bringing their trout back to the lodge, where Tarrant will demonstrate how to clean and prepare the fish. The day’s catch is then presented at dinner, alongside other homemade specialties served family style in the lodge’s dining room.

In addition to fresh-caught fish, menus at Fly Fishing Camp revolve around seasonal produce from Colorado’s Arkansas Valley Organic Growers, as well as produce and herbs grown in The Broadmoor’s on-property greenhouse. Outdoor cookouts are often a highlight, with beef sourced from nearby ranches.

GROUP GATHERINGS

The camp also features a comfortable event space called Fish House, which is outfitted with fishing memorabilia and everything needed to host presentations, small gatherings or breakout sessions. Half- and full-day guided fishing trips are also available for groups from The Broadmoor.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

The camp’s guides are experienced in tying flies, and are happy to teach the technique during a personalized fly-tying lesson at the camp. There’s nothing like landing a large trout on a fly that you’ve tied yourself.

Accommodations are in seven renovated historic cabins clustered among the pines, many of them within earshot of the gurgling river. The cabins date to the late 1800s and have been remodeled and outfitted in refined, rustic décor. Some include a private bathroom, while others are located a short distance from a heated bathhouse with private showers, sinks and stalls.

The camp is centered on a well-appointed Main Lodge, where guests congregate for meals and to socialize. Evenings are often spent swapping fish tales by the fire.

MANY GREAT FORTUNES WERE MADE during the Roaring Twenties, when credit was plentiful and stocks soared. Most of this wealth was wiped out on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, when the day of reckoning came on low-margin positions and the New York Stock Exchange collapsed, throwing the U.S. and the world into the Great Depression.

Among those fortunes that survived the crash was that of Thomas Harris Powers, heir to the Powers-Weightman pharmaceutical company (which merged with Merck & Co. in 1927), the first company to introduce quinine to the United States.

Powers hailed from Philadelphia, which was also home to Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose during his boyhood.

In 1923, five years after Penrose opened The Broadmoor, Powers purchased land from The Broadmoor Hotel & Land Company, across the street from the resort.

The quinine magnate began his plans modestly in 1924, constructing a small four-bedroom cottage and a carriage house, with a four-car garage and caretaker’s apartment, designed by Thomas MacLaren, a heralded Scottish architect who moved to Colorado Springs for his health. The house is still in existence at

That same year, Powers selected Saco Reink DeBoer to design the landscape plan for the property. DeBoer was the Landscape Architect of the City and County of Denver from 1910 to 1931, where he collaborated with Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. on the citywide park and parkway system. DeBoer was ahead of his time and is still recognized today for his use of native plant material, sensitivity to the natural landscape and sustainable practices such as water conservation.

he engaged the services of Frohman, Robb & Little of Boston, one of America’s significant 20th century Gothic-style architecture firms, who worked on the completion of the Washington National Cathedral. Their design for Powers, La Tourelle, is named for the stone turret that dominates the front of the house. According to property records, it was built in 1930. When completed, it contained 17 rooms, including seven bedrooms and seven baths, plus servants’ quarters, all spread over 12,000 square feet. The census of that year, two years into the Great Depression, valued it at $60,000.

Yet, the house was used only briefly from 1930 through 1935, and by 1940 it was being maintained by four of Powers’ servants. Finally, in 1949, La Tourelle was sold by Powers to L.B. Simmons, of Duncan, Oklahoma, for $100,000. In 1960, Simmons sold the house. In 1993, the estate went into foreclosure. The Broadmoor purchased it in 2016 and began the journey of bringing it back to life.

Sea Island, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year and is now under shared ownership with The Broadmoor, has enough stories to fill every inch of the isle. Over the years, it has transformed from a “friendly little hotel” into an internationally acclaimed destination—and the only resort in the world to earn four Forbes Five Star ratings for 10 years in a row.

The setting looks very different than it did nine decades ago; however, some things never change. Even

while services and amenities are constantly reimagined to meet modern expectations, Sea Island continues to honor its past, retaining its signature elegance and the undeniable sense of community that charms members and guests year after year.

A STORIED HISTORY

In 1910, Howard Coffin and his wife, Matilda, traveled to see his cars race just south of Savannah. They fell in love with the area and inadvertently changed the course of history.

Coffin, a millionaire, engineer and co-founder of the Hudson Motor Car Co., purchased swaths of the land, creating Sea Island Investments. He began building his vision for the island, including a golf course. “Mr. Coffin did not like golf, but he knew that his guests would want to play,” says Merry Tipton, the Director of Marketing Communications for the resort. “So a golf course opened in June of 1928, before there was even a hotel. People stayed in a large ship, called the Amphitrite, anchored nearby.” »

PRESENTING THE CLOISTER Designed by architect Addison Mizner, Sea Island’s 46-room “friendly little hotel” opens its doors and immediately becomes a popular destination.

1941

OUT OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION The resort survives the economic crisis thanks to tenacity, ingenuity and community support.

Later that year, construction finished on The Cloister, a Mediterranean-inspired hotel designed by noted architect Addison Mizner.

The Cloister comprised 46 rooms, the Spanish Lounge, courtyard, formal dining room and a solarium. It was an overnight success, often booked to capacity even in its earliest days. Hearst newspaper writer and editor Arthur Brisbane hailed the hotel as the “sun parlor of the nation.”

If that weren’t enough, President Calvin Coolidge spent that Christmas in the area with Howard Coffin, and came to The Cloister and planted an oak tree. A photographer captured the event, and the images ran in newspapers across the country. The publicity attracted even more visitors, and the president’s actions started a tradition that would eventually include Dwight Eisenhower, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, George W. Bush, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton—whose trees can still be seen at Sea Island today.

As The Cloister rose in 1928, Coffin also transformed the old beach club—which once housed a dance pavilion—into a popular seaside destination, with a larger dance hall and freshwater swimming pool. A golf clubhouse opened that September. Things were looking up, but just as the resort began to come into its own, the Great Depression struck.

FROM SURVIVING TO THRIVING

By strategic and creative means, Sea Island made it through the economic downturn. In 1932, Coffin turned management of the resort over to his younger cousin, Bill Jones. Sea Island would continue to be owned and managed by the family for decades to come, with Bill Jones Jr. taking the helm after his father, followed by Bill Jones III in 1992.

The resort began printing its own money in nickel, dime, quarter, $1 and $5 denominations.

Emblazoned with the signature of Sea Island’s treasurer, the scrip explained that the Sea Island Co. would redeem the amount in legal U.S. currency or coin “when it becomes possible to do so.”

“It didn’t matter where you bought your groceries or where you pumped your gas; all the merchants here in our community knew that somehow, some way, Sea Island would be able to make good on the scrip,” Tipton says. “Of course, Sea Island did.”

Sea Island entered a new era of hosting dignitaries and celebrities, creating unique and memorable experiences for its guests, and gaining more and more notoriety for its high level of service. A new Sea Island Beach Club opened in 1950, and the resort continued to make enhancements to its golf courses, building Sea Island’s reputation as one of the world’s top golf destina-

In 2004, Sea Island hosted the G8 Summit, the meeting of the largest industrial democracies. It remains the only resort in the U.S. to have done so, ultimately hosting 22 world leaders that summer. The Sea Island staff had about a year to prepare for the event, which brought the delegates and their staffs, security and Secret Service to the island, and drew worldwide media attention.

In 2016, Sea Island was acquired by Denver’s Anschutz family, which consolidated ownership of Sea Island and The Broadmoor and placed the resorts in a 100-year family trust to preserve their historical and cultural value. A COLORFUL PAST

“The Broadmoor Story” is not told in textbook fashion, like the dry history of military maneuvers, but more in the vein of a sophisticated scrapbook, filled with historical and contemporary photographs, complementing one another.

Archival photographs include everything from scenes of the early days of Colorado Springs to the hotel’s construction and amenities long gone, including a riding arena, ice arena and ski area, as well as the still-operating golf course and the new Wilderness Experience properties— Cloud Camp, Fly Fishing Camp and The Ranch at Emerald Valley. There’s also a slew of archival photos of employees, Penrose family members and celebrity guests, including Prince Harry of Wales, President Gerald Ford, Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope and Liberace.

Published earlier this year, “The Broadmoor Story” marks only the second time the resort’s history has been officially told in print. “Broadmoor Memories” was published in the early 1990s, and was researched and written without the resources available today.

At 212 pages, “The Broadmoor Story” was a labor of love for those involved, a team that included Allison Scott, Communications Director for The Broadmoor, Beth Davis, the hotel’s Archivist, Tom Wilmes, Editor of The Broadmoor magazine, as well as members of the El Pomar Foundation and even its publishers, Filter Press LLC, of Palmer Lake, Colorado.

“It was a team effort,” says Damioli, who is only the seventh president and CEO in the hotel’s long history. Allison Scott and Beth Davis led the team. I consider them the generals of the project. They used all the resources at their fingertips and came up with a great finished product.”

The 18-month-long effort included extensive research, writing, editing and careful scrutiny of stories and documents. Telling The Broadmoor’s story meant a commitment to the truth and relying on facts, rather than long-told tales. The oral histories of former employees and others were carefully listened to but always verified by surviving documents or photographs.

As a result, some legendary stories— such as the aforementioned Antlers incident—were shared in the pages of “The Broadmoor Story,” but framed with facts.

“Spencer Penrose riding his horse into The Antlers makes for a colorful story,” says Wilmes, who served as editor-inchief of the book as well as a contributor.

“But it isn’t true.”

The truth is that Broadmoor without the raised “A” was already widely used as a logo in Colorado Springs (several properties preceding The Broadmoor hotel used the Broadmoor name), and by raising the

We were finally able to get access to their original plans and could see where they put specific plants.”

Surprisingly, while some design modifications have been made over the years,

most of the original planting beds remain on The Broadmoor’s main campus.

“You look at the Olmsted drawings and go, ‘Wow, that’s just like today,’ ” Davis says.

A SINGULAR VISION

For Wilmes, one of the impressive aspects of The Broadmoor’s history is the “very short chain of ownership” over the past century. There have been just three owners in the resort’s history: Spencer Penrose, Edward L. Gaylord and Philip Anschutz.

“There were times in The Broadmoor’s history where hotel groups or outside chains wanted to purchase the hotel— who knows how different things could have been?” he says. “That continuity helped us to organize and tell 100 years of history in a way that directly connects past with present. It’s what makes The Broadmoor what it is today, with so much of its original character intact.”

Adds Damioli: “To have three private owners over 100 years is almost unheard of. The Broadmoor is not a corporate asset. It’s a place that’s loved and that people are passionate about. It’s been placed in a 100-year trust to preserve it for generations to come.”

Damioli says anyone who picks up the

book will gain a rich appreciation for The Broadmoor and its unique story. It’s not a traditional resort by any means, he adds, pointing to recent expansions and acquisitions, which include off-site activities such as zip lining with The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure and hiking and sightseeing at The Broadmoor Seven Falls.

“I think the book looks fantastic,” says Connie Rickard, a representative of El Pomar, a philanthropic organiztion founded by the Penroses. “What I liked best is the presentation. It has a lot of pertinent information presented in an easily readable format. ‘The Broadmoor Story’ tells the story in a fashion that would hold someone’s interest, especially someone who doesn’t like to read history books.”

Other members of the El Pomar Foundation have been equally enamored of the book, including Thayer Tutt, vice chairman of the foundation and the greatgrandson of Charles Tutt Sr., one of Penrose’s business partners.

“There are photos I’ve never seen before,” says Tutt, noting that a 1918 family portrait is included in the book. “I really like the way the book is presented. It’s a celebration of The Broadmoor instead of just a history book. It’s a great achievement.”

Returning to the home of her great-grandmother, Julie Penrose, brings back special memories of childhood at The Broadmoor for Baroness Longchamps.

GLEEFUL MEMORIES OF ICE-SKATING lessons and a very special dog named PittyPat flooded back when Julie Penrose’s great-granddaughter made a special visit to The Broadmoor in time for the hotel’s Centennial celebration. We sat down with Baroness Sybille Michele Emilie Marie Ghislaine de Selys Longchamps, who shared personal memories of time spent at her great-grandmother’s Broadmoor suite and the shared history that connects this Belgian baroness to Colorado Springs.

Q.

What do you remember about Julie Penrose?

You know, she was always in the same mood — she would never lose her temper, and she was always smiling. I remember everyone was always coming up to her and saying hello, especially when we were with her in the Tavern, which you know hasn’t changed much since then.

Oh, and of course I remember PittyPat, her dog.

Q.

You were raised in Belgium?

Yes. After the war, the aristocratic families were struggling financially with these huge estates. I’ve been told there were lists of wealthy American heiresses, so the men came over here and fell in love, and the American heiresses redid all the castles. That’s how Gladys [ Julie’s only daughter] came to Belgium; of course she and my grandfather were in love, but she really saved the Chateau de Longchamps.

She had the same type of character that Julie had, and you could see the similarities in the buildings between the castle and The Broadmoor.

JULIE PENROSE

Q.

How old were you when you first came to The Broadmoor?

I must’ve been only 6 or 7 years old. My grandmother came down with MS so young; she was only 40. She could never come, but my mother Pauline brought us.

Spencer had already died, so I never met him, but there’s a photo somewhere of him and my older brother as a baby.

Q.

What do you remember from that trip?

BARONESS LONGCHAMPS

Skating! It was wonderful; we all ran across the bridge and laced up our skates and they gave us lessons. They even taught us to twirl.

Q.

What was it like being a child here?

We were running around like wild, yet everyone was so nice to us—we were quite spoiled. We loved staying in her flat in Broadmoor Main. It was also the first time we had seen television, so I remember sitting in front of the television and being given quite a bit of chewing gum.

It was so special for us! And of course we went to Pikes Peak on the train and we went to the zoo.

Q.

Did you come back when you were older?

Well, yes, probably the last time I saw Julie was when I was 15 or 16. We would land at the airport, and she would meet us out there with her chauffeur, her maid and of course PittyPat.

Q.

Did you get a chance to visit the Pauline Chapel?

(Named for Lady Longchamps’ mother, Pauline.)

When I arrived, I saw the Pauline Chapel and noticed there was a sign for a mass. I went in and very much enjoyed the service and afterwards told the Chaplin I was Julie Penrose’s great-granddaughter and that Pauline was my mother. He was so kind, and really the whole thing was so touching.

I think I was afraid that everything would be different here at the hotel. But to return now, and see how The Broadmoor has captured the memories of Spencer and Julie, it’s really something quite special.

Especially now that it’s been 100 years. I wouldn’t have guessed for one minute that these memories would still be here, and it’s very special to see them now.

“Not only did the Olmsted Brothers do the regular landscaping, they designed the lampposts, railings, flowerpots, balustrades, every element, natural and manmade, that you would see between leaving the hotel and the water,” says Davis. Many of these touches, including the waterfront railings, survive to this day, and the custom wrought-iron lampposts would not be out of place in Central Park.

Fitting his pedestrian friendly bent, the most obvious Olmsted design element is the well-used walking path that runs along the lakefront, which has been tread by uncountable thousands of guests and visitors to the resort. While Broadmoor West was not built until 1976, long after Olmsted’s passing, the resulting extension of the path around the lake, and especially the island and bridges now connecting the two main buildings, are straight out of the firm’s design playbook, and a fitting expansion of the original ideal.

dotted with hundreds of small circles, each of them hand-drawn all over the map—these represent every individual tree transplanted to The Broadmoor property at the time, with the exception of those on the golf course. Olmsted’s site plan includes all the areas surrounding the hotel structure and lakefront, the entire resort up until the golf clubhouse and adjacent tennis courts, which form the dividing line beyond which Ross’ golf course plan began. There is even detailed landscaping around the tennis courts, the farthest-flung part of the Olmsted design.

Lake Avenue is now a main Colorado Springs thoroughfare lined with majestic pines, but in 1918 it was a barren dirt track, so Olmsted conceived a grand entrance to announce arrival to the hotel, with an extensive front garden and main fountain. While in the original plans, the fountain was not installed until 1923, five years after the grand opening, but the complex plantings Davis described were all in place. Other parts of the original plans have not survived—there was originally a large stable complex for up to 50 horses next to Broadmoor Main, also extensively landscaped, and the Olmsted blueprints called for eight freestanding cottages curving around the front garden at the Lake Avenue entrance, which were never constructed.

But the main elements of the Olmsted plan can still be seen today, as the primary focus was the lake side of the hotel and the interior of the resort’s grounds. Guests would arrive from the city, but pass through the hotel to discover a beautiful natural escape.

The mezzanine of Broadmoor Main, where the hotel concierge desk is now located, was at the time open-air terraces. Always wary of abrupt change, Olmsted carefully planned a transition from the hotel interior to the lake, including the landscaping and aesthetics of the hotel terraces themselves, larger than they are today, down to the shape and appearance of the railing and steps.

Spencer Penrose took the same care in selecting all the noted designers for the property as he did in choosing the Olmsted Brothers for the landscape. To create the hotel, he chose the New York firm of Warren and Wetmore, which had designed various landmarks in New York, including Grand Central Terminal and the Ritz-Carlton hotel. For the golf course, Penrose engaged Donald Ross, who designed more courses on which major championships have been played than any other golf architect in history.

BROADMOOR FOUNDER SPENCER Penrose loved to entertain. For his hotel guests during the early years, he brought in everything from rodeo, football and boxing, to celebrities, politicians and wild animals. One of his earliest ventures—and one that still thrives today—is the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), which wears the mantle of the second-oldest motorsports competition in the United States, after the Indianapolis 500.

The PPIHC is a one-of-a-kind challenge and entertainment rolled into one.

Of Colorado’s 53 mountain peaks taller than 14,000 feet, Pikes Peak is the closest to the plains, and a short drive from The Broadmoor. The road to its 14,115-foot summit—a snaking 20-mile stretch sure to test any driver’s nerves—was a mere carriage route before Penrose had it widened and improved for automobiles in 1915. That dirt track, with maintenance, remained the surface that the PPIHC was contested on until paving was completed in 2011.

The PPIHC is the most diverse one-day motorsports event in the world, with categories for everything from race cars and motorcycles to 1,400-plus horsepower electric vehicles.

The race begins at the 7-mile mark of the road, at an elevation of 9,390 feet, and rises nearly 5,000 vertical feet through 156 turns—the majority without guardrails— and 12.42 miles. It is generally considered one of the most dangerous motorsports races in the world. If you watch a GoPro

drivers must navigate the seven switchbacks (the “Ws”) that lead to the “Devil’s Playground” at 12,780 feet. This stretch of road crosses one of the most electrically active zones on the planet, experiencing thousands of lightning strikes a year, drawn by the high iron content of the mountain.

Of course, the panoramas along the course are as grand as any in the Centennial State, with 400-mile views spanning both the Continental Divide and the Great Plains—a sight that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” after visiting the summit in 1893. Pikes Peak is the No. 1 tourist attraction in Colorado, hosting 5.9 million visitors a year, which makes it second only to Mount Fuji as the most visited mountain in the world.

At The Broadmoor, James’ trio featured Billy Kilson on drums and Michael Palazzolo on bass, and the group’s set featured a number of tunes from its forthcoming CD on Mack Avenue Records, his first studio disc in 12 years, as well as James’ classics such as “Angela.”

HE STORY OF THE COLORADO Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College (FAC) begins just one year after Spencer and Julie Penrose opened the doors at The Broadmoor. Established in 1919, in what had been the Penroses’ private downtown estate, the Broadmoor Art Academy (BAA) served as a cultural pillar of the West—ultimately evolving into what is known today as the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.

The Fine Arts Center was the first of its kind—a museum, theatre and art school, all under one roof. Three founding women came together to make this community dream a reality: Julie Penrose, who gifted the magnificent property at 30 West Dale St.; Alice

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN ZOO

First competed in 1916, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second-oldest motor sports race in America.

Drivers race up Pikes Peak in a bid to be crowned “king of the mountain.”

JULY 11–14 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days

NORRIS-PENROSE EVENT CENTER // PIKESPEAKORBUST.ORG Sanctioned by the ProRodeo Cowboys Association, cowboys compete in steer wrestling, bareback bronc riding, tie-down roping, bull riding and women’s barrel racing. The rodeo supports local military and their families.

AUGUST 11 Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb This USA Cycling sanctioned race pits cyclists against the famous 20-kilometer auto racecourse. This year’s event also includes several noncompetitive options in the Gran Fondo.

AUGUST 18–19 Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon

PIKESPEAKMARATHON.ORG Cheer on the runners who run 13.32 miles straight up Pikes Peak on the first day of this weekend event.

Marathoners will race on day two, in one of the region’s most demanding races.

Hike through towering red sandstone rock formations along accessible trails with views of Pikes Peak. Admission is free to the park and visitor center.

MANITOU SPRINGS

Open year-round, weather permitting, the 19-mile highway leading to the summit of Pikes Peak offers numerous photo stops along the way. Don’t miss the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (June 24; ppihc.com), where professional drivers race to the summit.

A Century of Exceptional Service THE PAINT HAD BARELY DRIED WHEN GUESTS and curious local residents crowded into The Broadmoor for its June 29, 1918, gala grand opening.

Visitors found the lobby, halls, restaurants and 350 guest rooms exquisitely decorated and furnished, with appointments personally selected by Julie Penrose, wife of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose.

The room rate was $10 to $12 per night (approximately $199 today), which included three meals prepared by Broadmoor Executive Chef Louis Stratta.
