Whether you intend it to or not, your garage door makes a major style statement about your home. Why not make it a good one?

UPGRADING YOUR GARAGE DOOR IS one of the top three home-improvement

projects nationwide for return on investment, according to Remodeling magazine. That’s partly because, visually, the garage door represents a large portion of your house. Infusing a little style into this seemingly mundane part of your property can make a major difference in how people (including you) view it aesthetically. Follow these style tips to ramp up the appeal of your garage door—and your entire home.

FIND YOUR STYLE. Most garage doors come in one of three styles: Traditional: These doors usually contain panels that can be recessed or raised, short or long. Adding windows gives them a distinctive look. Carriage House: High on historic charm, carriage varieties offer the look of swinging stable doors but the functionality of a door that opens vertically. Modern: These doors generally use materials such as aluminum and glass to make a contemporary design statement.

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIAL. • Steel is durable and low maintenance, but can dent or rust if not cared for properly. • Vinyl resists dents, is rust-free and never needs to be painted, but it isn’t recommended for climates with extreme heat or high elevation. • Premium woods are beautiful but usually need to be painted, stained and water-sealed every few years, depending on sun and water exposure. • Fiberglass looks a lot like wood but requires a coat of clear protectant every few years.

• Aluminum and glass demand almost no maintenance but generally don’t provide much insulation, so they may not be ideal for extreme climates.

SELECT A COLOR. Prefer a subtly elegant door? Or perhaps one that pops? Color allows you to customize your door in a way that suits your personal aesthetic style.

ADD ACCESSORIES. Windows, panels and decorative hardware such as hinges and handles lend flair that can set your home apart.

Wood. Wood has a distinct aesthetic, but it’s usually about twice as expensive as asphalt for roughly the same durability. Also, some fire codes, especially in the West, don’t allow wood shingles. In that case, you might consider asphalt shingles designed to look like wood. •

Slate. This gorgeous, extremely durable (think 50-year life span) shingle style has long been a favorite in the Northeast, thanks to the availability of slate from regional quarries. It’s often prohibitively expensive, however, and can be too heavy for some roofs. A possible solution: a proprietary material from Women’s Choice Award winner GAF called TruSlate. It uses genuine, topgrade, hand-cut slate, treated with a waterproof material. The result: It cuts the amount of slate needed in half, greatly reducing cost and weight. •

Top STYLE

Shingles can dramatically enhance, or detract from, your home’s aesthetic (and monetary) value. This guide will help you get it right. THE LOOK OF YOUR ROOF changes the look—and worth—of your entire home. Follow this four-step checklist to determine the ideal shingle style to keep your house attractive, safe and marketable for many years to come.

FIND THE BEST CONTRACTOR.

CONSIDER THE MATERIALS.

First, know what questions to ask: Is the contractor licensed by your state (or province)? Adequately insured? Does the roofing company have a proven reputation for reliable, quality work? Is it committed to ongoing professional education? One way to ensure that the answer to all these questions is “yes” is to use a GAF Master Elite contractor, who had to pass these and other stringent tests to earn the Master Elite seal.

Not every material is suitable for every roof. Consult with an expert contractor you trust before you set your mind on a particular style. Here are three popular options you’ll find:

Asphalt. The most common and usually most affordable roofing material, asphalt shingles are versatile and durable (look for a lifetime limited guarantee). •

‘TRY’ BEFORE YOU BUY Get a feel for how various shingle colors and styles will look on your home by uploading a photo to the Color & Style Guide. WOMEN’S CHOICE AWARD

SELECT YOUR STYLE. The style of your home—ranch, colonial, mountain, modern and so on—will likely be the greatest determining factor of your shingle style. You may want to cruise nearby neighborhoods to assess styles you like and don’t like on similar homes. See ‘Try’ Before You Buy for other style-selection strategies.

CHOOSE YOUR COLOR. Personal style is important—do you prefer subtle colors? Bold hues and stark contrasts?—but be sure to weigh other factors, too. For example, lighter shades reflect sunlight, which keeps your home cooler, while darker shades warm it up by absorbing light. Color mixes and trendier hues are appealing but may go out of style sooner. Also, think about complementing not only the color of your house, but also accents such as brick or stone walls or porches.

A Room for

CALL IT A DESIGN REVOLUTION: The stuffy, formal living rooms of yesterday are rapidly transforming into more laid-back and decluttered spaces where everyone can feel at home. These fresh living room design trends will at once

aesthetics—now and for many years to come.

Lamps can go a long way to completing—or sabotaging— your design scheme. A few tips:

SECTIONAL SOFAS.

• Seek out lamps and light fixtures that complement the overall theme but don’t draw too much attention to themselves.

satisfy your desire for comfort, your need for practicality and your eye for

Whether two-sided or three-sided, sectional sofas continue to make their style mark in living rooms around the world. Who can resist the temptation to stretch out and relax? Today’s sectionals come in plenty of designs, from modern to timeless, and feature fabrics such as natural leather and leather match, soft chenille and more. As a bonus, look for practical touches, perhaps divided back cushioning for lumbar support or consoles with storage and cup holders.

ENTERTAINMENT FURNITURE.

VINTAGE CASUAL LOOKS.

Comfort is king as you settle in with your flat-screen TV. Poweroperated reclining mechanisms, deeperseated sofas and affordable home theater setups are all part of today’s functional living rooms.

Thanks to today’s relaxed design rules, expect things like fewer matched sets, more accent chairs and linenlike fabrics to be popular choices for living rooms.

HOME BARS. Whether you like to entertain, or just appreciate a good cocktail, adding a “happy hour” area can make your living room a lot more livable. Consider using console tables, counter-height bars, chairs and benches.

ACCESSORIES. A must for any living room, accessories are an easy way to add personality. Choose spicier hues, intriguing patterns and more “hand-spun” fabrics to add a splash of color and texture to your space. Themes—1960s patterns, exotic Moroccan market finds, distressed Parisian antiques and more—lend an air of sophistication and style.

• For end tables, keep lamp heights within a few inches of each other. • In general, the diameter of the bottom of a lamp shade shouldn’t exceed the height of the body of the lamp. • Using multiple lamps, including a mix of floor and table varieties, lets you influence the ambience of the room according to the occasion.

TAKE CARE Follow these tips to keep your china beautiful now and for generations to come. • Buy dishwasher-safe china— the easier it is to clean, the more likely it is you’ll actually use it.

A 2014-2015 Women’s Choice Award Winner

• For safe washing, use a mild liquid or powder detergent. Load china securely on racks so that the pieces do not touch. Use a mild wash cycle, and let pieces cool before removing. • Prevent damage by avoiding dramatic temperature changes: For example, don’t whisk a dish from the refrigerator to the dishwasher; let it warm to room temperature first. Or pour milk or cream into a teacup before adding hot tea.

3 Smart Shopping Tips KNOW YOUR MATERIALS. Bone china provides the best durability, as well as a characteristic whiteness. For trim and accents, select products that use real gold or platinum. It will look better and last longer, making it worth the investment.

The DISH ON Fine China How to choose—and care for—the best-quality place settings for your home. FEW THINGS ADORN a home as beautifully—or as enduringly—as fine china. TEST THE QUALITY. Before you buy, verify a dish’s value by holding the piece up to a light to check for translucency, which demonstrates the quality of the clay content. With most high-caliber dishes, you can see your shadow behind the plate.

Long Live the

ROSES With just a little daily TLC, you can extend the life of a rose bouquet —and increase your enjoyment.

WHEN ROSES GRACE YOUR HOME, you want nothing more than to help their beauty flourish as long as possible. The first step: Make sure the flowers come to

you fresh and healthy from a trustworthy floral provider, such as Women’s Choice Award recipient FTD, which has been delivering flowers since 1910. Then follow these simple strategies to get the most enjoyment out of your splendid bouquet.

Keep rose stems in water at all times— they continue to “drink” water even after they are cut. Exposing the cut end of the stem to air may cause the water-absorbing cells to shrivel and seal over, which can dramatically shorten the life of your rose bouquet.

Every day, add fresh, roomtemperature water properly mixed with the food that came with your bouquet. The treated water shouldn’t be too diluted or too cloudy; follow directions carefully.

Every few days, re-cut the stems diagonally under running water (to keep stems from sealing). Trimming them at an angle prevents the stems from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase, which can block water uptake. Use a sharp, unserrated knife rather than scissors, which can damage the watertransporting vessels.

MYTH BUSTERS

Prune wisely by trimming away any leaves that are submerged in water; otherwise they may rot and encourage bacteria growth. Also, prune dead blossoms and consider moving wilting blooms to a separate vase, both of which can help new blossoms flourish. Don’t, however, cut off the thorns, which can cause the flowers to wilt faster.

Display your flowers in a place protected from heat-generating appliances, direct sunlight and drafts from fans or windows, all of which can shorten the life span of your bouquet.

Fact: No scientific proof supports this myth. In fact, cutting stems vertically destroys the cell structure, causing bacteria growth and hindering water uptake.

A Spray of All

TRADES Even avowed “non-ironers” might want to stock spray starch in the pantry. Here’s why.

STARCH MAY SEEM LIKE A PRODUCT FROM your grandmother’s time, but there are plenty of reasons to make it part of today’s domestic arsenal. These are five of our favorites.

BETTER-LOOKING CLOTHES. Not concerned about stiff collars? Even so, you could easily become a spray-starch fan after just one use. It lends an attractive crispness to clothes without being too rigid. A few starching tips: • Spray lightly. Using too much will cause build-up on the bottom of your iron and make your clothes too stiff. If you prefer stiff, use two light applications (with a round of ironing after each) instead of one heavy one. • Use moisture. Spray and iron the clothing item when it is very slightly damp, or use the steam setting on your iron. This helps the garment absorb the starch and will minimize any residue on the fabric. • Consider the fabric. For natural materials like cotton and linen, spray the garment in sections as you iron. For man-made fabrics and blends, spray the whole item, roll

it up loosely and let it stand for a few minutes first. If a garment says “machine washable” on the label, then it should be safe to use starch. • Let it set. Place the garment on a hanger immediately after ironing, but don’t put it in the closet right away. Let the starch settle into the fibers in the open air first.

CLEANER LAUNDRY. Dust, sweat and other contaminants stick to starch, which means they come out of clothes more easily during the wash cycle.

easier to take down—simply peel off and then wipe down the surface.

CLEVER CRAFTS. Spray starch is a versatile crafting tool, allowing you to stiffen string, turn powders into paint, make unique mobiles and Christmas ornaments, mix up homemade silly putty, crispen quilting and sewing fabric, and much more. Pinterest has a bevy of ideas to get you started.

KEEP YOUR IRON CLEAN

STAIN-FREE SHOES. Apply spray starch to athletic shoes, including canvas and nylon sneakers, to block stains.

CREATIVE DÉCOR. Use spray starch to easily attach fabric to walls, the backs of cabinets and other areas of your home for a decorative touch. Bonus: It’s even

It’s easy to remove residue from the bottom of your iron: Make a paste using equal parts baking soda and water. Use a rag to rub the paste on the iron’s soleplate. Wipe it off with another rag. Then turn the iron to “steam” for a few minutes to clean the vents; you can also use a Q-tip.

DIY Home DÉCOR

Think beyond scarves and sweaters: Possibilities abound for knitting or crocheting beautiful home accents.

THERE’S PERHAPS NO BETTER WAY TO INFUSE your home with your personal touch and style than by crafting your own handmade accessories. Yarn projects like knitting and crocheting lend warmth to your décor and allow you to be more selective about specific colors and styles. Here are some design accents to try—many are even beginner-friendly!

THROWS/AFGHANS.

PILLOWS.

BASKETS.

TABLE RUNNERS.

Toss it over the back of a sofa for a pop of color, or beautifully adorn a bed. These projects range from simple to challenging.

Smaller than throws, pillows are a manageable starter project. Style options are limited only by your imagination.

Make one to hold your yarn or as a catch-all to corral clutter. Use two colors to give it a shaded, modern look.

These can be elegant or playful, depending on the direction you go. They can also be as easy or intricate as you choose.

WHY KNIT OR CROCHET?

SEASONAL DECORATIONS.

POUFS (BEAN-BAG COVERS).

ORGANIZATIONAL POUCHES.

Knitted and crocheted items are a simple way to lend your home holiday or seasonal flair.

This project, an excellent choice for novices, turns a child’s bean bag into an attractive footrest or floor pillow.

Keep your pastime paraphernalia—remote, crossword puzzles, Kindle and so on—at hand with simple pouches that can rest over the arm of a chair or slip under a cushion or a mattress.

One word: science! Recent research studies suggest that hands-on crafts such as knitting or crocheting can improve mood and even support cognitive function and memory by encouraging new neural pathways (especially when they replace TV watching).

Sew CRAFTY How to choose the right sewing machine and build the perfect home sewing workshop.

A SEWING MACHINE CAN BE a powerful tool that unlocks a wealth of DIY possibilities. But trying to choose the best one can be intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out. Use this guide to lead you to the ideal choice for your

abilities, your budget and your sewing aspirations.

ASSESS YOUR NEEDS.

DECIDE ON THE BASICS.

EVALUATE THE EXTRAS.

Before you shop, ask yourself a few questions: How often will you use the machine? For what types of projects? What fabrics will you use? Will you transport it, or will it always stay in one spot? What characteristics are most important to you—for example, ease of use, durability, specific features? How much can you afford to spend?

• The motor. In general, a bigger, heavier motor equals a heavier-duty machine. (That also means it will be harder to move.) If you expect to do only occasional, light sewing, a lighter motor may work just fine.

As you weigh the value of bonus features, employ this general rule: Give yourself room to grow, but don’t pay for things you know you’ll never use. A few features that are likely worth the extra dough: one-step or automatic buttonhole, toploading bobbin system, adjustable presser-foot pressure, snap-on feet, automatic needle threading.

Ready, Set, Sew! Get started on your machine with free project instructions at singerco.com/projects. You’ll find directions for scarves, bathrobes, totes, tablet cases, sewing machine covers and much more. Women’s Choice Award winner for two years running, SINGER, is the nation’s most-purchased sewing machine brand and has been an industry leader since its inception in 1851.

WOMEN’S CHOICE AWARD

• Stitching options. For the most part, you will need only a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch, which are available on nearly every machine, but other decorative stitches can add pizzazz and creativity to projects. Also check if you can adjust the stitch length, a feature you’ll likely want unless you plan to do only the most basic sewing. • Mechanical vs. computerized. If you can afford it, consider springing for a computerized (a.k.a. electronic) model. Most are lighter weight, fun to use and offer a huge array of features and options to try as you expand your sewing repertoire.

BE PROACTIVE. Don’t be shy about trying out machines at the store, and don’t rush the process. Take a variety of fabrics with you and test the machine with each. Try different sewing techniques and machine features. Make machine adjustments to see how easy they are. Listen to how loud it is (be sure to factor in background noise in the store). Ask a lot of questions, and check on warranty and repair policies.

your kitchen appliances. Choose high-performance, energy-efficient, aesthetically pleasing models, and you may just stop hunting for excuses to get out of the kitchen—and start looking for reasons to spend more time in it. Follow these tips to discern which of the many options will work best for you.

REFRIGERATORS. A new refrigerator can use up to half the electricity of older models. Look for a fridge with an ENERGY STAR label, a government-supported certification that ensures that it meets rigorous efficiency standards. Other features to consider include adjustable shelves, fast-cooling compartments, child-safety locks, ice makers and water dispensers, crisper drawers with modifiable humidity levels, door alarms, and LED lighting that offers better visibility while using less energy.

even baking and allows for crisper baked goods because it doesn’t produce water vapor). Or spring for the best of both with a dual-fuel range that combines a gas cooktop with an electric oven.

Modern ranges provide more options than ever, making your time in the kitchen more efficient and fun. Key decisions you’ll need to make:

• Convection baking options. Many ovens, gas or electric, now offer a convection baking setting, which uses radiant heat with a fan to circulate hot air throughout the oven, cooking food more evenly and quickly. However, not all convections work the same way, so it’s smart to ask how many fans are used (some use two vs. one) and how the heating elements inside the oven work with the fan to deliver more even heat distribution across the oven. Kenmore recommends dual true convection for this reason.

• Gas vs. electric. Gas is ideal for experienced chefs who need precise heat levels for various recipes. Electric can be better for budget-conscious buyers or frequent bakers (it offers true convection that promises more

• Stovetop features. Separately, induction cooktops use magnetic technology to deliver fast and precise heat directly to the cookware holding the food (the cooktop surface does not heat up). Induction offers faster speed

to boil than gas or electric cooktops, provide more precise simmering and is safe to the touch, even while cooking. However, all these features often come at a premium to gas or electric cooktops. And cookware that isn’t magnetic (iron, steel or copper are all fine) won’t work on it.

DISHWASHERS. The increased efficiency of newer dishwashers saves energy and money—with innovative cleaning features like micro-filtration and motorized spray arms that distribute water and detergent more evenly, they can eliminate the need to prerinse dishes. Many new models also have “express wash” cycles that offer a modest increase in water consumption to wash dishes faster than older models. High-tech features to consider also include delayed-start settings, noise insulation, adjustable racks with fold-down tines, and smart sensors that detect soil levels and load size to automatically choose the cycle that cleans the best.

Dream KITCHEN Before you tackle your kitchen renovation, you’ve got a vital question to answer: WHAT’S YOUR KITCHEN PERSONALITY?

YOU’VE DECIDED. IT’S TIME. You’re finally ready to take that plunge and make over your kitchen exactly the way you want it. But then one day you take a look at Pinterest and you’re suddenly overwhelmed. How exactly do you want it? Are you making the right choices? What if your taste changes? What if you’re not being practical enough? Or what if you’re not being you enough? The dream kitchen isn’t just a dream. It can be a reality. Your reality. The way you really live every day. The key lies in tuning out what others might do or think and discerning what will best suit your tastes and lifestyle. If you’re a true gourmand, for example, you’re going to want a pragmatic, no-nonsense kitchen with everything you need at hand. That doesn’t mean you have to forgo aesthetics, but it does mean you’re going to need a surgically

precise space, the right cabinetry and smart storage, with everything carefully thought out. Or what if you’re a busy mom who loves to cook but who has kids doing homework at the counter or playing on the floor while you’re whipping up dinner? The dream kitchen for the growing family will probably look a bit different from that of the professional chef. And if it’s just you and your partner sharing a kitchen, perhaps you don’t need all that space. Maybe you want to focus on having the very best appliances (that Viking stove!), custom built-ins and a galley kitchen that functions like a luxury charter ship on a permanent voyage to the Bahamas. There’s also a chance that you’re a combination of a few of these profiles. Use this personality guide to help you decide—and then to design your way to your perfect kitchen.

ARE YOU THE REALIST?

ARE YOU THE ROMANTIC?

ARE YOU THE DOMESTIC?

You’re serious about getting things done, but you know that to do so (without losing your sanity) you need a relaxed, fluid approach to life. You may have kids. You may not. There’s always something being made in this kitchen—and perhaps left behind: the kids’ toast crumbs on the counter, a smattering of French press grounds as you dashed off to work. Your kitchen is organized and (mostly) clean but unpretentious. You appreciate beauty and warmth, and you’re ok when life gets a little messy and unpredictable. You love warm woods, repurposed or upcycled items, soft colors and unique things that are both useful and beautiful. Your dream kitchen is fresh yet lived in and welcomingly rustic.

Fresh flowers. Bright white. Subdued accent colors. Your dream kitchen is harmonious and beautiful, a kitchen fit for a royal princess. You’ll serve up regal yet sensuous fare here. The consummate ladylike hostess, you feel at home in this kitchen because everything has a place and every sweet detail has been attended to. Any person whose crystal wine glass you fill will feel serene, comfortable and relaxed in this space. As you well know, relaxation is best achieved when there is a sense of order and innate pattern in place. This kitchen is for the person who loves to entertain and charm her guests, her family and herself—from day to night.

Your mornings are hectic at best. Your evenings are jampacked, too. The kids are off at soccer practice, and you’re finally having a moment to yourself. You love your crisp, white surroundings. At once classic and Zen in nature, your kitchen evokes a sense of calm amid the hustle and bustle. You’ll love being able to cozy up to the counter and linger over a cup of tea on a rainy afternoon. Your kids can make cupcakes with their friends while you chat with a neighbor. Your classic dream kitchen is form meets function in a cheerful white that’s both timeless and modern.

As you plan Don’t be too fussy. Look for textures, hardware and colors that reflect the way you really live: freely! Avoid shiny surfaces; instead opt for matte textures and muted colors with popping contrasts, like an oriental rug or a counter backsplash.

As you plan Domestic productivity begins here. Look for a blend of strength and subtlety for a timeless design. Inspired by sophisticated yet simple woodwork? Center panel detailing and a natural wood finish create a timeless look that welcomes everyone home. The beauty lies in its simplicity.

ARE YOU THE ARTIST? Artists revel in color. In the unexpected. In raw materials and free form. Your dream kitchen is all your own and unlike any other. You’ll find a funky and fabulous old sink at a salvage yard and, at the same time, you’ll choose exquisite designer cabinets and custom flooring. Your idea of heaven is a blend of eccentricity, style and self-expression. Your dream kitchen is a colorful, magical place from which you can draw inspiration for the other aspects of your life, as well as create amazing culinary delights for friends and family.

ARE YOU THE MODERNISTA? Denmark. Sweden. Norway. These are your dream-kitchen roots. Your dream-kitchen personality is minimalist, perhaps even a bit stark. You can add accents and pops of color but, for the most part, your kitchen is spartan, purist, uber-modern and clean. Every surface shines. Nothing is out of order. Everything has its place. Your space is open and free of clutter. Not unlike that of the ordered yet dreamy Romantic, this dream kitchen frees your mind to be creative while you work.

As you plan

Mix and match cabinet stain/ color for an eclectic mix. Add a pop of color with wallpaper or texture with grass cloth wall covering. Try pairing neutrals with glossy finishes and a little metallic bling to round out your artistic approach to design.

Look for sleek finishes with a monochromatic color palette. Structured cabinetry, hardedged countertops, sleek stainless steel fixtures and hardware give a modern flair. Add concealed storage for easy, out-of-sight organization.

Keep It Clear No matter which kitchen personality defines you, you’ll enjoy your new space much more if it’s well organized. For ingenious and discreet ideas, visit thomasvillecabinetry.com and click on the “Organization & Storage” tile. Thomasville Cabinetry, available exclusively at The Home Depot, landed the 2015 Women’s Choice Award as “America’s Best for Home Kitchen Cabinetry.”

ARE YOU THE URBANITE? This is not your grandmother’s kitchen. This is a serious kitchen for serious people. Masculine in feel, it employs dark, rich colors that contrast sleek, metallic accents. Sparkling backsplashes invigorate the depth here, and there is a strength in the calm. More at home in the city, this dream kitchen is for the erudite, sophisticated and cultured. You’ll delight guests, you’ll pour only the finest wines, and you’ll serve only the finest cuisine. Most of all, you’ll revel in this kitchen every day from the depths of your soul.

As you plan Dark wood cabinets, wroughtiron accents, exposed brick, ducts and pipes, and subway or green glass tile fit your urban sensibilities. Complete the look with a neutral base color accented with pops of color and edgy art.

If so, you probably don’t need the fastest service or highest data limits— for example, the FCC survey found that the time required to download a basic Web page dropped proportionally with speeds up to 10 Mbps but stayed about the same after that. But if you play games online, watch or download movies or music, or

spend a lot of time on social media, you’ll want to get the fastest service and the highest data-download/ upload limits you can afford. Also, be sure to consider not only your needs but also those of anyone else who might use your computer; having multiple Internet users in a household at one time can reduce speed. Note: Download and upload speeds are usually different; check both if you do much uploading.

Americans. The good news: With the right strategies, you can combat symptoms like labored breathing, poor sleep, and watery, irritated eyes before they reach their peak. Here’s how:

KNOW YOUR ENEMIES. The most common allergen is the microscopic dust mite, according to a recent study, “The Growing Incidence of Allergies and Asthma in America”. According to the report, more dust mites live in the bedroom than in any other room of the home. Because people spend a third of each day in bed, the bed is naturally dust mites’ prime feeding ground. Unfortunately, the bedroom is also the toughest part of your home to protect. “Dry carpet cleaning and furniture sanitation may discourage dust mites, mold and mildew,” the report states. “However,

mattresses present an impossible cleaning dilemma. Mites and their feces live deep inside the mattress and are unreachable.”

SEAL THEM OUT. The best—and often the only—way to protect your sleep environment from dust mites and other common allergens is to use medical-quality, total-encasement mattress and pillow protectors, says Philip M. Tierno Jr., Ph.D., director of microbiology and immunology at New York University and author of The Secret Life of Germs.

RETHINK SOFT SURFACES.

Consider replacing home décor like curtains, upholstered sofas and wall-to-wall carpet with harder surfaces such as blinds, leather sofas and wood flooring to make your home less friendly to dust mites. If your child is suffering, you might want to minimize the use of stuffed animals, especially in the bedroom.

STAY DRY. Dust mites need moisture to live, so aim to keep your home’s humidity levels below 50 percent. If you live in a wet climate, try a dehumidifier.

SECRETS

to All-Night Sleep Simple changes can make the difference between toss-and-turn and out-like-a-light.

FOR SOME, A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Brought to you by

is like an elusive phantom—always beckoning, but never actually appearing. Before you turn to a prescription, try these sleep hacks for sweet, sustained slumber.

A 2011-2015 Women’s Choice Award Winner

USE A GO-TO-BED ALARM.

SNIFF YOUR WAY TO SLEEP.

Set an alarm on your phone to remind you when it’s time to start powering down electronics and getting ready for sleep. Take 20 minutes to finish your chores, 20 minutes for personal hygiene and 20 minutes to read quietly or relax before lights-out for the night. If you must leave your phone on overnight, place it facedown on your bedside table and screen incoming calls to only top-priority numbers.

Aromatherapy—using scents such as ylang-ylang, lavender and chamomile—has been shown to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

GO TO BED EARLIER.

TRY A NIGHTLIGHT.

Sleep triggers a hormone that regulates appetite—skimp on sleep, and you’re more likely to choose high-fat, salty snacks over healthy ones. And the heavier you are, the more likely you are to snore, which can keep you (and your partner) from sound sleep.

Bright lights wake up your brain, so light your bathroom with ambient lighting or a small nightlight.

OPTIMIZE YOUR BEDROOM. Think of your bed and pillows as performance gear. Do a sensory test of your bedroom furnishings— sight, touch, smell and sound all contribute to your good (or not-so-good) night’s rest.

CALM YOUR MIND. Stress is a top contributor to poor sleep. Before bed, try various relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, prayer or writing down your worries or things that you’re thankful for.

ON A WINNING STREAK Restonic mattresses have received the Women’s Choice Award for excellence for five consecutive years. Sleep, Baby,

SLEEP

Set your newborn up for safe and comfortable shut-eye with these proven tips. Experts say... BABY’S BEDTIME CAN BE STRESSFUL for new parents. Are blankets safe? What about toys? Is the crib reliable? Does it matter what mattress you use? Calm your heart and mind with these safety and smart-slumber recommendations to help your baby, well, sleep like a baby.

SHOPPING TIPS.

Encourage good sleep habits by aiming to put your baby to bed when she’s drowsy, rather than fast asleep.

BEDTIME TIPS.

SKIP SECONDHAND.

GET THE RIGHT MATTRESS.

THINK SNUG.

It may be tempting to take your friend up on the offer of a handme-down crib, but it’s not in your child’s best interest. Always purchase new ASTM Certified cribs to ensure that they comply with the latest standards. For example, drop-side cribs are no longer approved, and newer cribs require stronger crib slats and mattress supports, higherquality hardware and more rigorous testing procedures. Avoid used mattresses as well: They are likely not firm enough and may contain bacteria from the previous user. A few studies have found a correlation between used mattresses and a higher risk of SIDS. Also, all new mattresses must pass state and federal flammability standards, as well as the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), which requires testing for toxic substances.

Consider the following when choosing a mattress:

Swaddle newborns instead of using any loose blankets. Use cozy footie pajamas or sleep gowns to keep your baby warm.

• Materials. Purchase a firm coil or foam crib mattress from a reputable manufacturer—in general, an infant’s mattress should be firmer than that of older kids or adults; a soft sleeping surface can be a suffocation hazard. For a foam mattress, check its resiliency: Push your hand down into it; then remove your hand and see how quickly the mattress regains its shape—the faster the better. • Size. Legally, crib mattresses can’t be more than 6 inches thick. Also, make sure the mattress fits snugly in the crib: There should be no more than a 1¼-inch gap (about two fingers’ width) between the mattress and the side of the crib.

KEEP IT CLEAR. Avoid crib bumpers, pillows, stuffed animals, sleep positioners or any products with cords or electronics that can pose a danger in or around a newborn’s sleeping environment.

STICK TO THE CRIB. Despite what your mom or best friend may have done, the safest place for your baby is in his crib. Don’t place an infant to sleep on pillows, a couch, a waterbed or airbed, or in an adult bed.

COMPLETE THE ENSEMBLE. You’ll want to invest in a waterproof mattress protector to shield the mattress against spills and leaky diapers. Use fitted sheets and mattress pads that fit snugly and securely on your mattress.

Rest EASY

Take the stress out of mattress shopping with these 5 sure fire tips.

GREAT SLEEP STARTS WITH a comfortable mattress, but finding the perfect fit

Brought to you by

isn’t always easy. Here we help you formulate a simple game plan to wade through the sea of options and find the best sleep solution for you—and your partner. A 2014-2015 Women’s Choice Award Winner

SHOP WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER. Comfort is subjective and varies from person to person, so you can’t assume that your partner will like every type of mattress that you do. By shopping together, you can agree on a new mattress that you both find comfortable and supportive.

FIND YOUR COMFORT LEVEL FIRST. Your local mattress retailer may have a lot of models on display—don’t let this overwhelm you. Start by testing out the different comfort choices (firm, plush, pillow top, memory foam) to narrow down your selection.

DON’T RUSH. Your new mattress will affect the quality of your sleep for years to come. Don’t be shy about lying down on the mattresses in the store. Spend about five minutes trying out each mattress in various sleep positions and talking with your partner about what you like and dislike about each mattress you try. Consider taking notes to help you remember what your thoughts were, and don’t be afraid to ask your sales associate if you have any questions.

TRY AN ADJUSTABLE FOUNDATION. An adjustable foundation can enhance your sleep experience by letting you alter the angle of the head and foot of your mattress. By doing so, you may be able to alleviate back and neck pain, improve circulation, and reduce acid reflux, snoring and other common sleep issues.

KNOW YOUR RETAILER’S POLICIES. It’s possible that, even with careful shopping, a mattress ends up being too firm or too soft for you or your partner. Consequently, it’s important to understand your retailer’s return and exchange policies before you purchase.

QUICK TIP You really should leave that manufacturer’s tag on after all. While the “don’t remove” warning is aimed at retailers, you’ll need to have the tag attached if you ever want to make a warranty claim.

Be the

SPIN Doctor

Keep your laundry machines humming with these easy washer and dryer fixes. WHEN YOUR WASHER OR DRYER stops working, you usually need it fixed fast—before your laundry pile grows into a laundry mountain. Fortunately, the most common problems are ones you can easily remedy yourself, if you know where to look. Use these tips to quickly find the problem and repair your appliance—or prevent it from breaking down at all.

WASHER PROBLEMS?

DRYER ISSUES?

• If the washer won’t turn on, first check for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.

• If the dryer seems to be working but is taking an unusually long time to dry, clean the lint screen and clear the exhaust vent. If the problem continues, reduce the size of the load.

• If the washer turns on but doesn’t fill with water, check the hot and cold inlet hose filters, and clean them if necessary. Straighten the watersupply hoses to make sure there aren’t any kinks, leaks or cracks that might be hindering water flow. • If the washer isn’t draining, you likely have a clogged pump, which can often be cleared without taking the machine apart. First, if you have a coin trap at the bottom of your machine, clean it out. Next, disconnect the drain hose from the back of the machine to check for obstructions, such as lint build-up or maybe a stray sock. • If the machine is making loud, rhythmic thumping sounds, it’s probably out of balance. Redistribute the clothes evenly in the washer, and try again.

• If you hear the dryer motor running but the drum isn’t turning, open the door and check for any obstructions around the drum. You may have to replace or reattach the dryer belt. • If the dryer drum turns but there isn’t any heat, first clean the lint screen and exhaust vent. Then check the thermostat, heating element and timer.

BE PROACTIVE Stop problems before they start with these simple strategies. • Never drop a washing machine lid—it can damage the lid switch. • Remove wet clothes from the washing machine immediately after the wash cycle. Letting damp clothes sit for long periods can cause the unit to develop a musty odor. You can also leave the lid or door open for about 30 minutes after the cycle to air it out. • Wrap a nylon stocking around your drain hose outlet to prevent extra lint from going down the drain. Replace the stocking every four to six weeks. • Clean out your dryer’s lint filter before every load, and clear the exhaust vent every week or two.

DID YOU KNOW? In 1908, Women’s Choice Award winner Speed Queen built their first laundry machine in Ripon, Wisconsin, and have been proudly headquartered there ever since. Since their beginning and today, they continually strive to build the best washers and dryers backed by the industry’s finest service and support. Speed Queen equipment is tested to last 10,400 cycles. In the average home, that’s 25 years of reliable performance. As a growing company with over 100 years of commercial quality and expertise, they have always and will always bring you a line of washers and dryers that are built better to last longer.

Laundry LIST Use this shopping checklist to find the ideal, long-lasting washer and dryer for your family’s needs.

LAUNDRY CAN SEEM LIKE A NEVER-ENDING TASK, but having a washer and dryer you trust can greatly ease the burden. These tips can guide you to reliable machines that perform perfectly day in and day out, year after year. Take time as you shop, and make sure you’re selecting a washer and dryer that will give you and your family the best value—and superior performance—over the long haul.

LOOK FOR LONGEVITY. Positive—and negative—reviews of washers and dryers aren’t hard to find. There’s no reason to settle for machines that need to be replaced every few years. The most reliable machines are designed and tested to last up to 25 years.

CHOOSE COMMERCIALGRADE CONSTRUCTION. Commercial-grade features enable washers and dryers to withstand highvolume use over a long period of time. For example, a commercial-grade finish ensures that machines remain looking new for years to come, while heavy-duty metal parts will withstand decades of use.

GET SUPERIOR RESULTS. • Washers. First, you’ll need to decide between a top-load or front-load machine. Top loaders are usually less expensive and are the best choice if you have trouble bending over or kneeling. Look for features like full agitators, which create action and push more water through the clothes, and stainless steel wash tubs, which get smoother with time and won’t damage clothes. Front loaders generally use less water and electricity and can handle bigger items such as blankets. • Dryers. Save on utility costs and minimize wear and tear on clothing by opting for a dryer with moisture

sensing, which stops the load at the exact dryness level you select. This feature will reduce unnecessary drying, lower utility costs and protect your clothes.

RESEARCH THE WARRANTY. Select equipment from a renowned manufacturer that stands behind its products with warranties. Labor can easily be the most costly part of a repair. Look for a machine that includes a factory-direct warranty of three or five years on both parts and labor. Many manufacturers provide a standard three-year warranty on parts but offer only one-year on labor. Seek out the industry’s best.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES. Certified independent dealers know their products inside and out—and display an earnest commitment and appreciation for customers. After the purchase, independent retailers remain committed, providing the knowledge and resources to service equipment throughout its lifecycle.

Dry WISELY

Save money—and the planet—with these 6 easy tactics for more efficient clothes-drying. YOUR DRYER IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ENERGY HOGS in your home. Regardless of whether you have a gas or electric dryer, it takes a lot of power to get the air inside the drum hot enough to dry a big load of wet clothes. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the amount of energy your dryer uses. By running your dryer more efficiently, you’ll save on your monthly utility bills while also doing a good deed for the environment.

USE THE MOISTURE SENSOR. A dryer with a moisture sensor will monitor how wet your clothes are and will automatically shut off once they’re dry. You’ll never again waste energy heating up clothes that are already dry.

TRY THE DELAYED-START FEATURE. Many people use the delayed-start option to run their appliances when they’re not around, so they don’t have to listen to the noise. But you can also use it to save money: Depending on where you live, energy rates may be lower during certain times of day—such as the middle of the night, when few people are using their appliances. Use delayed start to run your dryer during these lower-rate hours. You’ll pay less for the same amount of energy.

PLACE YOUR DRYER IN A WARM AREA. Your dryer uses a lot of energy just to heat the air at the beginning of each cycle. By placing your dryer in a warmer area of the house, you can reduce how long it takes to warm up. As a result, your clothes will dry faster and you won’t have to run it as long.

DO LOADS ONE AFTER ANOTHER. Instead of doing a load here and there, save up several loads of laundry and do them one after another. This takes advantage of the already-heated drum to reduce how long it takes your dryer to warm up, minimizing the cycle time.

STUDY THE ENERGY REPORT. Some dryers have the ability to give you a report that tells you how much energy they’re using. Use this feature to track your results so you can see what improves your efficiency and what doesn’t.

GET A DRYING RACK.

Shopping Tip Save money over the long haul by looking for machines with the energy-saving features mentioned here: a moisture sensor, delayed start, energy diagnostic tools.

DID YOU KNOW? Nearly one in three American homes has a Kenmore appliance. Learn more about America’s Most Recommended appliance brand at kenmore.com.

Foldable drying racks are inexpensive and easy to store. Use them to air-dry small loads and delicate items so you won’t have to run the dryer as often.

Buy an ENERGY STAR Dryer

On average ENERGY STAR-certified dryers use 20 percent less energy than standard clothes dryers. You can save even more when pairing the dryer with an ENERGY STAR washer. The ENERGY STAR mark can be found on dryers that feature advanced heat pump technology, making them over 50 percent more efficient than conventional dryers.

CLEAN UP GROUT.

REMOVE TOILET BOWL RINGS.

Scrubbing dingy grout is a tedious task that you may want to consider leaving to a professional. To take it on yourself, you’ll need a wax stripper or heavy-duty grout cleanser, a grout brush and plenty of time to scrub the entire area. Once the grout is as clean as you can get it, rinse it well with clear water. For mildewed grout, use a grout brush with a 1:5 solution of chlorine bleach and water. Be sure the area is wellventilated, and never use bleach in combination with any ammoniabased product or on colored grout (it can strip the color). When you’ve finished cleaning, rinse the area well to remove all traces of bleach.

If a thorough scrubbing using a commercial acid-based bowl cleaner and a toilet bowl brush doesn’t do the trick, try using a green, nylon-backed scrub sponge along with the acid. If the ring is old, use a pumice stone. Wearing gloves, wet the stone with water in the bowl and rub it on the ring. Keep the stone wet the entire time you’re scrubbing. Pumice stones should be used only on vitreous china toilets—never on colored, enamel or plastic fixtures.

Keep it clean: Apply a masonry sealer to clean grout to prevent future stains.

Keep it clean: Once you’ve gotten rid of a ring, regular weekly cleanings should prevent it from coming back.

Win the Stain &

ODOR BATTLE

Don’t let unpleasant smells and unsightly stains zap your enjoyment of your children and pets—use this guide to remove stains and odors from every area of your home.

KIDS AND PETS BRING GREAT JOY TO A HOUSEHOLD, but often a lot of not-so-great stains and scents, too. Here’s how to safely remove stains and odor from your home’s problem areas so you can revel in every moment with your lovable messmakers. First, you’ll want to invest in an all-purpose enzymatic cleaner, preferably one with Ordenone, a nontoxic (read: safe for skin), patented compound that permanently eliminates stains and odors immediately upon contact. Ordenone is itself odorless—which means there’s no masking scent—and can be safely used in every room in the house.

ENTRYWAY. Use a concentrated enzymatic cleaner (formulated for carpetcleaning machines) to remove mud from rugs. You can also spray walls (here or anywhere in the house) with an all-purpose enzymatic cleaner to eradicate lingering smells from cigarettes or food— something even new paint can’t do.

KITCHEN. After you take out the trash, spray the can with an enzymatic cleaner, let it sit for 10 minutes and wipe it out before replacing the bag. This trick also works for diaper pails and litter boxes.

DINING ROOM. Blot spills on the carpet with a dry towel. Then spray with an enzymatic cleaner, let it sit for 10 minutes and wipe off with a towel. For linen stains, immediately spray with an enzymatic cleaner, leave on for 10 minutes and then wash.

Why enzymes? Enzymes are nature’s cleaning agents. They break down organic messes—such as urine, feces, blood and vomit—and eliminate them completely.

BEDROOM.

LAUNDRY ROOM.

For mattresses, remove as much vomit, urine or feces as possible. Then pour the enzymatic cleaner directly onto the mattress. Let it sink in and dry naturally.

Add ¼ cup of enzymatic cleaner to a load to brighten whites. You can also use it to pretreat stains on clothes.

BATHROOM.

Remove mold or mildew from moldy tents or jogging strollers.

Spray enzymatic cleaner into the toilet bowl to eliminate odors, or onto tile grout. Scrub grout with a brush and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

LIVING ROOM. Remove red wine or blood from a couch by blotting with a towel and then cold water. Spray with an enzymatic cleaner; let it rest for 10 minutes, and blot with a towel. For dog beds and blankets, mist regularly with cleaner between washes. It’s even safe to mist the dog!

GARAGE.

For tents: Fill a tub with cool water and 4 ounces of enzymatic cleaner; fully submerge the tent. Let soak 10 minutes; then hang to dry. For strollers: Saturate the stroller’s seat fabric with enzymatic cleaner. Pay particular attention to visible mold and mildew, which tends to grow on and near the seams. Scrub with a soft-bristled brush and allow to dry thoroughly.

Shopping tip: Try KIDS ‘N’ PETS Instant All-Purpose Stain & Odor Remover, a Women’s Choice Award winner. It’s effective on any water-safe surface, including carpets, furniture, mattresses, clothing and bedding. And it is 100 percent safe for your whole household—people, pets and plants.

DID YOU KNOW? A vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States, according to 2013 FBI statistics. Of the 10 metropolitan areas with the highest per capita auto thefts in 2013, nine of them were in California (Bakersfield was number one). Honda Accords and Honda Civics are the most frequently stolen cars. Source: National Insurance Crime Bureau

Stop, THIEF! Don’t be a victim! Follow these 20 law-enforcementrecommended tips to prevent auto theft.

AN AVERAGE OF 1,900 CARS A DAY are stolen in the United States—a large number, to be sure, but 58 percent lower than the nation’s peak in 1991 (4,550 per day). Why the drop? Thanks goes in large part to anti-theft measures such as steering-wheel locks, passive immobilizers and vehicletracking systems. Prevention-savvy drivers also play a role—join their ranks by implementing this crime-thwarting advice.

WHEN YOU’RE AT HOME

WHILE DRIVING

• Copy your tag number and vehicle identification number on a card, and keep it with your driver’s license. • Write your driver’s license number on a business card and drop it down the window slot to serve as identification in case the VIN is removed. • Engrave your driver’s license number and state on valuable components such as stereos and cellular phones. • Etch the vehicle identification number or a code number into your vehicle windows to deter thieves and to aid in recovery.

• If you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or populated area and honk your vehicle’s horn. • Be suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle, whether passing out leaflets or asking for donations. • Always drive with your doors locked and your windows rolled up.

GETTING IN THE CAR • Always have your keys ready before you reach the car. Always look under and around your vehicle before approaching it. • Check the back seat of your vehicle before entering it, and immediately lock the door after you get in.

WHEN PARKING • Do not park your vehicle in an isolated area where there are few passers-by. Opt instead for secured lots that are well lit and near hightraffic areas. • Park with your front wheels turned sharply; this will make your vehicle more difficult to tow away. • At home, park in your garage if possible. In the driveway, park frontwheel drive models front end first and rear-wheel vehicles back end first. • Consider using a steering-wheel lock

such as The Club by Women’s Choice Award favorite Winner International. The Club provides a very visible deterrent to thieves and is one of the most effective and least expensive anti-theft products on the market.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU • Always remove your keys from the ignition and take them with you. • Keep your vehicle registration with you when driving, but do not leave it in the car. • Keep your garage door opener with you at all times. If your vehicle is stolen, the thief may attempt to get into your home. • Remove valuables from the vehicle and place them out of view in the trunk.

AFTER YOU EXIT THE VEHICLE • Lock your vehicle, no matter where you are, and set the emergency brake. • If you must leave your key with a parking attendant, leave only your vehicle’s ignition key. Do not leave anything attached to it with your name and address. • Keep your vehicle keys separate from your house keys to avoid giving thieves easy access to both your vehicle and your home.

eye gets blocked and infected. Follow these tips to keep a stye from invading your eye.

THINK HYGIENE.

KEEP CONTACTS CLEAN.

Wash your hands regularly (with soap!), and try to avoid touching your eye area. Once or twice a day, gently scrub your eyelid with a clean washcloth, using warm water and a mild soap like baby shampoo. Always dry your eyes with a clean towel.

Always wash your hands thoroughly before inserting your contacts, and disinfect lenses regularly. Don’t keep them longer than you’re supposed to (for example, if they’re “monthlies,” toss them after a month), and never wear them overnight—even if you’re told they’re designed for that.

TAKE (COSMETIC) CARE. Cosmetics can transfer infection, so don’t borrow anyone else’s makeup or tools or let them use yours (including eyelash curlers). Toss old cosmetics and applicators, especially after you’ve had a stye. Don’t apply makeup below your lash line, and always remove it before you sleep.

INVESTIGATE RECURRENCES. If you’re prone to styes, there may be other underlying issues. People with skin conditions like rosacea are prone to blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids. You may also have problems with your meibomian glands, located in your eyelids, in which case omega-3 supplementation could help. Stress, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition and dehydration can also be contributing factors. If you suspect any of these issues, consult a physician.

IF YOU DO GET A STYE Most experts recommend hot compresses to be applied to the area for about 10 minutes, four to five times per day. Many people also find success with homeopathic remedies, such as that from Women’s Choice Award winner Stye Relief, which has no known contraindications and offers a money-back guarantee when used as directed.

Take a Bite out of

TERMITES The best way to handle termites is to prevent them from entering your house in the first place. Here’s how.

Brought to you by

TERMITES ARE RELENTLESS, efficient and incredibly harmful to your home’s structural integrity. While there’s no guarantee you can prevent these pests from

infiltrating your house, these smart strategies can greatly reduce the odds.

STAY DRY.

KEEP IT CLEAR.

Termites need a water source, so your first step should be to reduce their options. Repair leaking faucets or water lines, and get rid of any puddles of standing water near your home. Clogged gutters can cause leakage and pooling, so clean them regularly. Also, don’t use mulch near your house, because termites can use it for both a food and water source.

Wood is a termite’s ideal food source, so remove woodpiles, old stumps or roots, and any heavy brush or overgrowth near your house. Termites can easily move from the woodpile to your home. If you have no other place for a woodpile, create a strong barrier such as thick metal or concrete between the pile and the house.

PREVENT GROUND CONTACT.

GET REGULAR CHECKUPS.

Use concrete or treated lumber for any part of your home that has contact with the earth, including decks, patios and supporting posts. These are prime spots for termites to enter your home.

Termites consume wood from within, so infested wood will sound hollow when tapped. But it’s not always easy to identify where you have termites until the damage is significant. Have your home inspected annually by a reputable pest control company to nix problems early.

QUICK FACTS Did You Know? In 1932, Women’s Choice Award recipient Terminix became the first company to obtain a termite-control patent. Since 1990, Terminix has been the world’s largest termite and pest control company.

The Smartest Home on THE BLOCK A home security and automation system delivers safety, savings, simplicity and—best of all—sanity.

NOT LONG AGO, home security systems consisted of a simple alarm in the case of a break-in. Today, the best security systems integrate smart technology to protect your home, conserve energy, help you manage your house even from a distance and, ultimately, save you money. Check out these surprising ways home security and automation can elevate your quality of life.

CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE. The advent of mobile apps has made security and automation systems a better investment than ever, allowing you to lock doors, turn lights and small appliances on and off, activate cameras, and arm or disarm your system from not only anywhere in the house but nearly anywhere in the world. At any time or place, you can get live video feed of your new puppy, turn off that curling iron your daughter left on, lock the back door or turn down the thermostat. Think you left your phone on the kitchen counter? Click on the kitchen cam to find out. Customers can also receive notifications if the system isn’t armed or a door is left open.

CONSERVE ENERGY WITH SCHEDULES. Even easier than adjusting your lights or thermostat remotely is setting schedules that do so automatically at specific times. You can even enable a smart schedule on your thermostat that analyzes when you’re home and when you’re away and creates a custom heating and cooling schedule for you. On average, smart thermostats save homeowners about

$180 per year in energy costs.

MONITOR ACTIVITY INSIDE YOUR HOME. Burglars aren’t the only ones who could get into trouble at your home. Wireless sensors can be placed on nearly anything that opens and closes, alerting you when, for example, someone opens a medicine, gun or liquor cabinet. You can also program cameras and lights that activate according to triggers of your choice— say, the doorbell ringing or the gun safe opening.

PROVIDE TEMPORARY ACCESS. Remote lock controls and temporary passwords enable you to offer one-time or short-term entry to the babysitter or that friend who is stopping by to borrow some tools. You can then disable the code whenever you choose while keeping your usual code private.

Moving Made

EASY Take the stress out of your move with these savvy tips.

Brought to you by

WHETHER THIS IS YOUR FIRST MOVE or your 50th, and whether you’re moving around the corner or to the other side of the world, it can feel like an overwhelming task for the whole family. But with smart planning, you can ease the transition for everyone, including kids, pets and even plants! Get started with these time-tested strategies.

KID CARE Get your kids excited about the move by involving them in the process. Here’s how: • Tell them about the move as soon as possible, so they don’t overhear the news by accident. Share the details you think they’ll understand—then ask about and listen to their reactions. • Involve them in all aspects of your relocation, if possible, including house hunting and decorating their new rooms. • Have children help pack a special box with their most treasured possessions—they can even decorate the outside of the box so they can quickly identify it in your new home. • Make plans to continue your child’s current activities (such as Scouts, sports or dance classes) in your new community—continuity will make adjusting to a new location much easier. Move-Day Tip: For their own safety and the safety of the movers, keep small children in one room of the house while the movers are packing and loading.

PET CARE • Schedule a pre-move veterinary visit to check your pet’s health, obtain copies of vaccination records

and a health certificate (if required), update identification tags, and discuss a tranquilizer or precautionary measures for the trip. If traveling to your new home by car: • Get your pet comfortable with auto travel by taking it on short trips around the neighborhood. • Don’t feed your pet for seven hours prior to your trip; pack a container of fresh, cool water; and stop frequently for walks. • If stopping at a hotel overnight, make sure the hotel allows pets. • Never leave your pet in the car alone. • Birds and small pets such as hamsters can travel in their cages if the cage can be placed in a stable, well-ventilated area free of drafts (covering the cage while the car is moving often calms an animal). For tips on transporting your pet by air: Visit the Moving Tips section at Allied.com. Move-Day Tip: For their own safety and the safety of the movers, keep all pets in a locked room or in a cage while the movers are packing and loading.

PLANT CARE Most moving companies will not accept liability for safe transport of

A 2015 Women’s Choice Award Winner

plants, so it’s best to move them on your own, using these suggestions: • Provide plants with extra sunlight for several weeks prior to moving day to allow them to store extra energy. • Prune back overgrown leaves and branches about a month before moving, and curtail feeding to minimize growth. • Thoroughly water the plant the day before you move. • Place the plant in a sturdy carton to keep it from tipping over.

PACK LIKE A CHAMP Packing is often the most challenging part of the moving process. Ease your burden by tapping into the expertise of Allied Van Lines, which has been moving people around the world for more than 87 years and is the Women’s Choice Award’s Most Recommended Moving Company. Check out the Moving Tips section of Allied.com, where you’ll find a comprehensive packing guide, including an eight-week movingtimeline checklist, a packing calculator to estimate which supplies you’ll need, room-by-room packing tips, a list of what not to pack, suggestions on prepping and transporting your vehicle, and much more.
