Wood. Wood has a distinct aesthetic, but it’s usually about twice as expensive as asphalt for roughly the same durability. Also, some fire codes, especially in the West, don’t allow wood shingles. In that case, you might consider asphalt shingles designed to look like wood.

Keep rose stems in water at all times— they continue to “drink” water even after they are cut.

Exposing the cut end of the stem to air may cause the water-absorbing cells to shrivel and seal over, which can dramatically shorten the life of your rose bouquet.

Every day, add fresh, roomtemperature water properly mixed with the food that came with your bouquet.

The treated water shouldn’t be too diluted or too cloudy; follow directions carefully.

Every few days, re-cut the stems diagonally under running water (to keep stems from sealing). Trimming them at an angle prevents the stems from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase, which can block water uptake. Use a sharp, unserrated knife rather than scissors, which can damage the watertransporting vessels.

MYTH BUSTERS

Prune wisely by trimming away any leaves that are submerged in water; otherwise they may rot and encourage bacteria growth. Also, prune dead blossoms and consider moving wilting blooms to a separate vase, both of which can help new blossoms flourish. Don’t, however, cut off the thorns, which can cause the flowers to wilt faster.

Display your flowers in a place protected from heat-generating appliances, direct sunlight and drafts from fans or windows, all of which can shorten the life span of your bouquet.

TRADES Even avowed “non-ironers” might want to stock spray starch in the pantry. Here’s why.

STARCH MAY SEEM LIKE A PRODUCT FROM your grandmother’s time, but there are plenty of reasons to make it part of today’s domestic arsenal. These are five of our favorites.

BETTER-LOOKING CLOTHES. Not concerned about stiff collars?

Even so, you could easily become a spray-starch fan after just one use.

It lends an attractive crispness to clothes without being too rigid.

A few starching tips: • Spray lightly. Using too much will cause build-up on the bottom of your iron and make your clothes too stiff. If you prefer stiff, use two light applications (with a round of ironing after each) instead of one heavy one.

• Use moisture. Spray and iron the clothing item when it is very slightly damp, or use the steam setting on your iron. This helps the garment absorb the starch and will minimize any residue on the fabric.

• Consider the fabric. For natural materials like cotton and linen, spray the garment in sections as you iron. For man-made fabrics and blends, spray the whole item, roll

it up loosely and let it stand for a few minutes first. If a garment says “machine washable” on the label, then it should be safe to use starch.

• Let it set. Place the garment on a hanger immediately after ironing, but don’t put it in the closet right away.

Let the starch settle into the fibers in the open air first.

CLEANER LAUNDRY. Dust, sweat and other contaminants stick to starch, which means they come out of clothes more easily during the wash cycle.

• Stitching options. For the most part, you will need only a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch, which are available on nearly every machine, but other decorative stitches can add pizzazz and creativity to projects.

It may be tempting to take your friend up on the offer of a handme-down crib, but it’s not in your child’s best interest. Always purchase new ASTM Certified cribs to ensure that they comply with the latest standards. For example, drop-side cribs are no longer approved, and newer cribs require stronger crib slats and mattress supports, higherquality hardware and more rigorous testing procedures. Avoid used mattresses as well: They are likely not firm enough and may contain bacteria from the previous user. A few studies have found a correlation between used mattresses and a higher risk of SIDS. Also, all new mattresses must pass state and federal flammability standards, as well as the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), which requires testing for toxic substances.

Consider the following when choosing a mattress:

Swaddle newborns instead of using any loose blankets. Use cozy footie pajamas or sleep gowns to keep your baby warm.

• Materials. Purchase a firm coil or foam crib mattress from a reputable manufacturer—in general, an infant’s mattress should be firmer than that of older kids or adults; a soft sleeping surface can be a suffocation hazard.

For a foam mattress, check its resiliency: Push your hand down into it; then remove your hand and see how quickly the mattress regains its shape—the faster the better.

• Size. Legally, crib mattresses can’t be more than 6 inches thick. Also, make sure the mattress fits snugly in the crib: There should be no more than a 1¼-inch gap (about two fingers’ width) between the mattress and the side of the crib.

KEEP IT CLEAR. Avoid crib bumpers, pillows, stuffed animals, sleep positioners or any products with cords or electronics that can pose a danger in or around a newborn’s sleeping environment.

STICK TO THE CRIB. Despite what your mom or best friend may have done, the safest place for your baby is in his crib.

Don’t place an infant to sleep on pillows, a couch, a waterbed or airbed, or in an adult bed.

WHEN YOUR WASHER OR DRYER stops working, you usually need it fixed fast—before your laundry pile grows into a laundry mountain.

Fortunately, the most common problems are ones you can easily remedy yourself, if you know where to look. Use these tips to quickly find the problem and repair your appliance—or prevent it from breaking down at all.

WASHER PROBLEMS?

• If the washer won’t turn on, first check for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.

• If the dryer seems to be working but is taking an unusually long time to dry, clean the lint screen and clear the exhaust vent. If the problem continues, reduce the size of the load.

• If the washer turns on but doesn’t fill with water, check the hot and cold inlet hose filters, and clean them if necessary. Straighten the watersupply hoses to make sure there aren’t any kinks, leaks or cracks that might be hindering water flow.

• If the washer isn’t draining, you likely have a clogged pump, which can often be cleared without taking the machine apart. First, if you have a coin trap at the bottom of your machine, clean it out. Next, disconnect the drain hose from the back of the machine to check for obstructions, such as lint build-up or maybe a stray sock.

• If the machine is making loud, rhythmic thumping sounds, it’s probably out of balance. Redistribute the clothes evenly in the washer, and try again.

• Never drop a washing machine lid—it can damage the lid switch.

Scrubbing dingy grout is a tedious task that you may want to consider leaving to a professional. To take it on yourself, you’ll need a wax stripper or heavy-duty grout cleanser, a grout brush and plenty of time to scrub the entire area. Once the grout is as clean as you can get it, rinse it well with clear water. For mildewed grout, use a grout brush with a 1:5 solution of chlorine bleach and water. Be sure the area is wellventilated, and never use bleach in combination with any ammoniabased product or on colored grout (it can strip the color). When you’ve finished cleaning, rinse the area well to remove all traces of bleach.

If a thorough scrubbing using a commercial acid-based bowl cleaner and a toilet bowl brush doesn’t do the trick, try using a green, nylon-backed scrub sponge along with the acid. If the ring is old, use a pumice stone.

Wearing gloves, wet the stone with water in the bowl and rub it on the ring. Keep the stone wet the entire time you’re scrubbing. Pumice stones should be used only on vitreous china toilets—never on colored, enamel or plastic fixtures.

Keep it clean: Apply a masonry sealer to clean grout to prevent future stains.

KIDS AND PETS BRING GREAT JOY TO A HOUSEHOLD, but often a lot of not-so-great stains and scents, too. Here’s how to safely remove stains and odor from your home’s problem areas so you can revel in every moment with your lovable messmakers. First, you’ll want to invest in an all-purpose enzymatic cleaner, preferably one with Ordenone, a nontoxic (read: safe for skin), patented compound that permanently eliminates stains and odors immediately upon contact. Ordenone is itself odorless—which means there’s no masking scent—and can be safely used in every room in the house.

ENTRYWAY. Use a concentrated enzymatic cleaner (formulated for carpetcleaning machines) to remove mud from rugs.

BATHROOM.

Remove mold or mildew from moldy tents or jogging strollers.

Spray enzymatic cleaner into the toilet bowl to eliminate odors, or onto tile grout. Scrub grout with a brush and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

LIVING ROOM. Remove red wine or blood from a couch by blotting with a towel and then cold water. Spray with an enzymatic cleaner; let it rest for 10 minutes, and blot with a towel. For dog beds and blankets, mist regularly with cleaner between washes. It’s even safe to mist the dog!

GARAGE.

For tents: Fill a tub with cool water and 4 ounces of enzymatic cleaner; fully submerge the tent.

Let soak 10 minutes; then hang to dry.

For strollers: Saturate the stroller’s seat fabric with enzymatic cleaner. Pay particular attention to visible mold and mildew, which tends to grow on and near the seams. Scrub with a soft-bristled brush and allow to dry thoroughly.

Wash your hands regularly (with soap!), and try to avoid touching your eye area. Once or twice a day, gently scrub your eyelid with a clean washcloth, using warm water and a mild soap like baby shampoo. Always dry your eyes with a clean towel.

Always wash your hands thoroughly before inserting your contacts, and disinfect lenses regularly. Don’t keep them longer than you’re supposed to (for example, if they’re “monthlies,” toss them after a month), and never wear them overnight—even if you’re told they’re designed for that.

TAKE (COSMETIC) CARE. Cosmetics can transfer infection, so don’t borrow anyone else’s makeup or tools or let them use yours (including eyelash curlers). Toss old cosmetics and applicators, especially after you’ve had a stye. Don’t apply makeup below your lash line, and always remove it before you sleep.

INVESTIGATE RECURRENCES. If you’re prone to styes, there may be other underlying issues. People with skin conditions like rosacea are prone to blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids. You may also have problems with your meibomian glands, located in your eyelids, in which case omega-3 supplementation could help. Stress, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition and dehydration can also be contributing factors. If you suspect any of these issues, consult a physician.

Deadhead both perennials and annuals to keep them productive. If you have visible dead foliage from spring bulbs, pull it out to maintain a tidy look, but if the daffodil or tulip leaves are still green, leave them alone; they’re busy nourishing the bulb to bloom again next year.

Train your garden to endure dry days by watering deeply a couple of times a week, instead of watering lightly daily. This style of watering will promote the growth of deep, strong roots.

Keep summer’s mud and muck outside with two doormats at your main entry door. Place a coarse mat at the exterior and a softer, cloth one on the interior to catch the most dirt.
