ACADEMICS

Balancing Traditional & Hands-On Learning We believe it’s not just about what you learn; it’s how you learn it, which is why we blend the essential elements of a college preparatory education with experiential learning. By remotely participating in an open heart surgery, building and sailing cardboard boats, and role-playing historical leaders, our students acquire real-world skills that help them become problem solvers who embrace challenges and take risks. And because our students get their hands dirty (sometimes literally), our vigorous curriculum has real staying power. Our unique approach allows students to direct their own education and seek individual support from teachers, mentors, and peers.

Across more than 100 years, we have honed an innovative approach to education that teaches students to trust and liberate their curiosity.

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Balancing High Energy & Focus Every day, we help our 110 Middle School students in grades 6-8 funnel their raw energy and enthusiasm into an intellectual adventure. This is a critical age for students to develop ownership of their studies and their passions. Our goal is to stoke their spirits and enliven their days to feed them mentally, emotionally, and physically. Students are well prepared to move on to our Upper School to seriously pursue their academic endeavors. Middle School is such an enriching experience that it’s common to see our older students dropping by to visit their teachers and to mentor younger students. (Can you remember loving middle school that much?)

We love good questions. We ask them, encourage them, and seek them out. They are more than the secret to the curious mind. They are the great force behind deep learning and extraordinary personal growth.

THE UPPER SCHOOL

Balancing the Known & the Uncharted We believe a class is a home run when students catapult discussions into uncharted territory. This is when the learning becomes personal and captivating, allowing our students to surprise themselves with their deep knowledge, analytical thinking, and ability to reassess and refine an argument. Our goal in the Upper School is to give students the confidence to step into the unknown—from academics to athletics to arts—which translates to graduates with nimble minds and the ability to succeed in an ever-changing world. In an area rich in academia, Hun students stand out as capable, courageous, and caring young people who want to make an impact on the world around them.

BOARDING Balancing Close-Knit & Global Our residential experience is specifically designed to offer students a supportive environment and an introduction to the wider world. Students live and learn alongside peers from diverse cultures and backgrounds, which deepens their interpersonal and communication skills. At the same time, our small boarding community—including resident faculty— gives students the comfort and sense of home that they need to thrive in a rigorous academic setting. By living at Hun, students extend their learning beyond the classroom, using evening hours to meet and study in small groups or to access one-on-one coaching with teachers. When our students attend college, living away from home is “old hat,” and they have the independence, study skills, and global mindedness to excel.

TEACHING Balancing Intellectual Challenge & Personalized Support We support a culture of innovation that encourages our gifted teachers to discover and design cutting-edge teaching methods and curricula that respond to a rapidly changing society. Our teachers’ passion and curiosity are infectious, and they create lively classroom experiences that allow students to truly absorb content, rather than simply memorize and recite it. At Hun, we build a powerful foundation of trust between students and faculty through mutual respect and open communication. Our teachers give students the safety net they sometimes need as they rise to their personal best. Hun faculty inspire students to unleash their intellectual curiosity, challenge convention, and calibrate their moral compass.

COLLEGE COUNSELING

Balancing the Present & the Future Our college counseling process gets personal. What we mean is this: our college counselors spend quality time with our students so they can understand where they’ll thrive best. Does a student flourish in an urban environment or feel most comfortable at a small school? Does a student want to be challenged academically or grow artistically? What grants, scholarships, and financial aid can help make college affordable? Our college counselors are experts at pin-pointing ideal matches for each student, setting them up for future success as they embark on college.

Balancing Teamwork & Individual Achievement The Hun School wins its fair share of athletic competitions and championships, but we place the highest value on playing each game with grace, resiliency, and respect for others. We believe the athletic arena can help shape each student’s strong character and develop a lifelong commitment to wellness. Our student-athletes understand what it takes to push themselves individually and to work as a team, and each season builds on the legacy of what it means to play as a Raider—an endeavor bigger than self. Many of our alumni become college, professional, and Olympic athletes, but more importantly, ALL learn how to be good teammates, and strive for their personal best.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS

Balancing the Mind & the Body Music, art, and dramatic literature are components of a meaningful education. Every day, we help students find and cultivate outlets for their personal expression—from throwing a pot on a wheel, to belting out a show tune on stage, to mastering a Bach concerto on the violin. By engaging in artistic exploration, the talented students in our arts program have the unique opportunity to develop their creativity, emotional intelligence, and cultural insight. Our arts faculty introduce students to new passions and nurture students with lifelong artistic visions.

“Going in every day to rehearsal after a long day is amazing because of the awesome people that are in the Theater program. It makes my day to be with a group of people that enjoy what they are doing, just like I do.” MARTIN | PRINCETON, NJ

WHEN PRINCETON UNIVERSIT Y MATH PROFESSOR JOHN GALE HUN FOUNDED THE HUN SCHOOL MORE THAN A CENTURY AGO, he did something extraordinary. Blazing a path apart from the sterile classrooms and stern lecturers of the day, he envisioned instead a vibrant learning community, where teachers and students worked side-byside, and where personal understanding and encouragement stimulated new levels of achievement. That vision still flourishes at Hun today. Our faculty understand that the best learning occurs in a joyful environment, propelled by enthusiasm, not anxiety. We have developed a carefully calibrated formula for a balanced education: challenging academics combined with an allembracing emphasis on broad personal development. We offer creative, engaging courses that immerse students in real-world problems and cultivate essential skills for the fast-changing world they will inherit. And we ensure that every day presents an opportunity for students to work individually with teachers and mentors, to share their experience with beloved friends and peers, and to interact with one of the most intellectually inspiring communities in the world here in Princeton. A Hun School education is highly personal; it is joyful; and it is transformative. It will push you to new heights and broaden your idea of success. Because, quite simply, we are the very best at what we do.
