“Lesser artists borrow, great artists steal” —Igor Stravinsky
This summer CVCM embraces the adage, “Everything old is new again.” Looking through our season program you will discover that each concert pairs works by some of the most cherished composers of the classical canon alongside later works inspired by these composers. This may be as simple as a set of variations, as in the work by 19th century composer Anton Riecha, or a free reworking of materials such as Schnittke’s Moz-ART a la Haydn. As always, I seek to program a broad palette of musical styles for your ears. You will hear the familiar and the new, all the while you enjoy listening to various composers who have paid homage to their compatriots (sometimes more than one!).
Welcome
!
Our 2014 artists will continue to mix familiar and new faces, many with professional careers spanning the globe. This season will see return of familiar faces (Trio 826, the Exorior Duo, and pianist Rene Lecuona) along with new guests, including pianist Cristina Capparelli Gerling who is on faculty at Indiana University and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Kirsten Yon, violin faculty at the University of Houston.
!
CVCM is proud to present its ninth season of great summer music. There will be three subscription concerts, two free downtown Waterloo After-Work concerts at 220East (4th St.), and various community outreach initiatives.
!
I look forward to seeing you at these events!

A composer’s job involves the decoration of fragments of time. Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines by which bills must be paid. -Frank Zappa

Concert #1 Franz Schubert: Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 “The Trout” (1819) Aaron Jay Kernis: The Four Seasons of Futurist Cuisine (1991) Kevin Puts: Piano Quintet “The Red Snapper” (2006)
! !
Our opening concert is a three course meal of the familiar and the new. Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet is one of the most celebrated works in the chamber music literature, but it is not alone in its homage to fish. We will pair Schubert’s standard fare with a reflection on Schubert via American composer Kevin Puts. Entitled “The Red Snapper,” this lyrical piano quintet will bookmark a program that also features a work by the composer Aaron Jay Kernis as he sets an Italian futurist cookbook to music. Bring your musical appetite and listening bib!

heaven and earth, nature and man, comedy and tragedy, … the Virgin Mary and the demons...Mozart simply contains and includes all this within his music in perfect harmony. This harmony is not a matter of “balance” or “indifference” – it is a glorious upsetting of the balance, a turning in which the light rises and the shadows fall, in which the Yes rings louder than the ever-present. - Karl Barth

For over 200 years Mozart’s music, its simplicity and refinement, has inspired the composers who followed him. Our second concert celebrates Wolfgang by places his music alongside Romantic and Modern works that are inspired by his legacy.

When we were kids, George and I used to hang out and we had, we had one little party piece which was to show that we weren`t stupid, so we used to do this thing by Bach that was our own little version of it, and we got it wrong. -Paul McCartney
