It’s Prostate Awareness Month Did you know that the Hunter has the highest rates of prostate cancer in NSW? “Most people don’t realise that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in both New South Wales and Australia. It kills about 3,500 men nationally every year.” Tracy Scott told The Local. Tracy is a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse based at the Calvary Mater Newcastle, who along with her colleague Nancy Consoli, covers the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Lower Hunter areas. They provide support, information about disease, treatment and side effect management and facilitate referral to appropriate support services as required. (continued on page 5)

Keep up the local spend

On any given week I’m in contact with a number of retailers and other business owners in the local area. Sometimes I’m a shopper. Sometimes I’m Mark from The Local hooking them up with fantastic print advertising opportunities! A common message I’ve heard from local businesses lately is that whilst we are still shopping locally (which btw is great!), we are spending a little less per transaction than we were just 12 short months ago. This puts pressure on local small businesses. It could be the casualisation, or worse still the Uberisation of the workforce; it could be the fall in home prices; it could be talk of interest rates not staying low forever; it could be talk of how much harder it is to secure credit from the bank; it could be the government’s apparent blindness to the fact that those receiving welfare payments have less in their pockets in real terms than they’ve ever had before. For each family and household it will be different. The result is the same. We are spending less. I’ve doubt this is not limited to our local shopping spend. We are spending less online, and less in the big shopping centres too. But The Local’s raison d’etre is for the smaller, independent, bricks and mortar retail and service businesses. I therefore implore readers of The Local during these tighter times to spend a little more locally where you can. There’s no need to spend more in total than you are comfortable with. That $5 or $10 per person per week that you don’t spend with the big national stores or online is always welcome in Elder Street or Regent Street or Beaumont Street or Brunker Road.

Infants kids support MHF

New Lambton Heights Infants School held its annual Beanie Day recently in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF). Since it was founded by Mark Hughes and his wife Kirralee in 2014 more than $10 million has been raised by MHF. Mark himself visited New Lambton Heights Infants ahead of Beanie Day to talk to students, teachers and families about the importance of research into the cause of brain cancer and to create awareness and support for brain cancer patients and their families. The kids were encouraged to wear a beanie to school and make a donation to MHF. On Beanie Day there were cupcakes, fruit cups and other goodies for sale, as well as a jellybean guessing competition. All up the school of just 79 students from Kindergarten through to Year 2 raised more than $800 as a donation to MHF. “New Lambton Heights Infants may only be a small school but it has a really big heart.” School principal Lisa Hughes (no relation) told The Local. “We are a caring and supportive community. Brain cancer has been close to our thoughts recently as we’ve had a local family affected by it. “The Mark Hughes Foundation has been, and continues to be, a great support to them. We’re so pleased to be able to support the Foundation in return.” Mrs Hughes added.

Mary Poppins in Gregson Park Hamilton Child Care Centre (HCCC) will host its annual outdoor cinema night in Gregson Park on Saturday 21 September. The whole community is invited to watch the family friendly film Mary Poppins Returns on the big screen from sunset (around 6pm) with gates opening at 3pm. Arrive early to get the best spot for your picnic rug (no chairs please). The event is a fundraiser for repairs to the HCCC’s building and to create a children’s indigenous knowledge garden. A sausage sizzle, vegetarian food options, cake stall, coffee cart, market stall and face painting will be available on the night. Gourmet cheese boxes are available for advance purchase, and a pop-up selling kids’ bikes donated by Drift Bikes will all help the centre to raise funds.

The Hunter New England Local Health District has over 1000 new diagnoses of prostate cancer each year.” Tracy added. Many people have heard of PSA testing, a simple blood test which your GP can organise. According to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia guidelines, men at average risk of prostate cancer who decide to undergo regular testing should be offered PSA testing every 2 years from age 50 to 69. Men with a family history of prostate cancer who decide to be tested should be offered PSA testing every 2 years from age 40 to 45 to 69, depending on the strength of their family history. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month so there’s no better time for men to be asking their GP for a PSA test. The Truth About Organic Foods

by Alex Avery (published 2006) This book has been out for some time now but, with food retailers offering an ever-increasing range of organic products, its message is just as relevant today. Is food grown using conventional mass production methods bad for you? Is organically produced food better? The debate goes on, and as world population booms (it’s doubled in the last 50 years) demand for food is outstripping supply in many areas. Avery was Director of Research and Education at the Hudson Institute, USA when he wrote this book. In it he examines claims made about organic foods and in doing so starts with the emergence of the organic movement in the 1920s. He then takes us through a range of subject chapters, including ‘Is Organic Food Healthier?’,’ Is Organic Food Safer?’, pesticide use in food production, organic farming versus wildlife habitat, modern biotech developments relevant to food production, among many others. Avery’s writing style is straightforward, even when quoting scientific studies and voicing his own conclusions all of which are clearly explained. He uses case studies to illustrate topics along with quotations and illustrations. Anyone who cares about what they eat and feed to their children will find this book interesting and thought-provoking. Lawson Crichton

Lawson Crichton was born in Coatbridge near Glasgow in Scotland in 1854. He ended his days in Lambton in 1906, as one of the town’s most prominent citizens. Crichton arrived in Australia in 1875 and soon gained a position as assistant at the Hamilton Cooperative Store. In 1879 he married Agnes Logan Cherry, daughter of Robert Cherry of the Hamilton Hotel. In 1882 Crichton was appointed manager of the Lambton Co-operative store, situated on the north east corner of Pearson and Grainger Streets. In 1889 he resigned after purchasing a bakery business, but returned in 1896 as manager of the Hamilton and Lambton Cooperative Society. Ralph Snowball’s September 1898 photograph shows Lawson and Agnes Crichton with several of their five children, and various employees in front of the Lambton store. For an interesting contrast in how some things change while other things stay the same, a close look at the signs on the store is instructive. One advertises “Cadburys Chocolate”, still widely enjoyed today, while another promotes “Bile Beans for Biliousness”, a product thankfully lost in history! Lawson Crichton was active in many local institutions including the fire brigade, cricket club, football club, and several friendly societies and lodges. From 1899 to 1902 he was also a key member of the Lambton Citizens’ Committee. These were years when Lambton Council ceased to operate having been bankrupted by the failed electric lighting scheme. The Citizens’ Committee under the leadership of Crichton became the de facto local government, looking after sanitation, drainage and street repairs until the Council was reinstated in 1903. Lawson Crichton died at his residence in Pearson Street Lambton on 2 July 1906, aged just 52 years. The following day a funeral procession left his home

There is a current campaign in Australia called everyagecounts.org.au which encourages people to stand for a world without ageism where all people of all ages are valued and respected and their contributions are acknowledged. You can go online to make this pledge. Have you asked yourself, “am I ageist?” When you are an adult often you see age as a moving target. When you are 30 you think people who are 40 are old. When you’re 50 you might think 60 is old while I mix

with very socially active 95 year olds at NovaCare who don’t want to undertake activities that old people do. As people age we can suddenly become the brunt of a very youth obsessed society from childhood on, as we’re barraged by messages that it’s sad to be old. Wrinkles and grey hair are not cool things to have. I have recently viewed a TED Talk from author and activist Ashton Applewhite who has examined these issues in great depth. Applewhite also has published a book called “This Chair Rocks. A Manifesto Against Ageism”. The author explores the way society speaks of and reacts to those who are “olders”. It encourages us to think about our own future and the way we regard those of our generation and older. As a society we can do many things to change the engagement and treatment of older people. Ashton’s view is that it’s time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind. I did like the mantra: “We’re old, we’re bold, get used to it!” Another word for ‘Ageing’ is ‘living’. It’s not a bad thing.

What is a Deposit Bond? A Deposit Bond is a ‘Guarantee’ issued by an Insurance Company for a deposit on the purchase of Real Property, whether it’s vacant land, a stand-alone dwelling, a strata unit or a commercial property. A Deposit Bond is utilised by many purchasers in place of a 10% cash deposit. The use of a Deposit Bond is common, and it is rare that a vendor will not accept a Deposit Bond in lieu of a cash deposit in a conveyancing transaction. A purchaser who applies for a Deposit Bond will pay the Insurance Company a fee, or premium, for providing the cover and for the security afforded by

the Deposit Bond. The Deposit Bond is held by the vendor as security for the deposit payable under the sale contract. The issuer of the Bond provides an unconditional guarantee of payment of the Deposit Bond amount to the vendor, in the event that the purchaser defaults and does not complete the purchase. It is important to remember that whilst a Deposit Bond saves a purchaser in having to find a 10% cash deposit on signing/exchanging contracts, ultimately the Deposit Bond is for the benefit of the vendor. If the purchaser fails to complete the contract to purchase the property, the Insurance Company may be called upon to pay the deposit amount secured by the Bond, to the vendor. If this payment is made by the Insurance Company, then the Insurance Company will in turn, look to the purchaser for reimbursement of that amount, in addition to other potential associated enforcement costs. Do you often get time (or even permission) to have a proper look at your pet’s teeth? We often discover that our patients keep deep, dark secrets inside their mouths! Bad breath can be the clue, and it can often point to quite serious periodontitis, loose teeth and even osteomyelitis in serious cases, as well as considerable pain and discomfort that they have no way of telling you about (or probably even identifying themselves in a specific way, they just know that they don’t feel too good every time they eat). Here’s an example - Ollie the happy and much loved pug came in for his vaccinations this week and we noticed during his examination that he had quite bad breath and his teeth were stained and dirty, especially the upper molars at the back of his mouth. Ollie is 8 years old and he had come in two years ago for an anaesthetic and tooth clean but,

like people, despite his dental chews and good diet, time had taken its toll and he needed to see the dentist again. This time his owner opted for dental X-rays to be taken so that we could identify unseen problems and address them early. What we found was some serious bone resorption around his molars, two of which were quite loose, and we needed to extract 3 main teeth at the back. The X-rays also showed us a strangely hooked tooth root which helped us navigate the extraction process. Unlike people, dogs and cats have the open socket left behind stitched closed after lots of flushing, as it is really difficult to syringe with saline and perform home care in our pets. Ollie’s owner was concerned that Ollie would not be able to eat dry food with limited molars but sure enough, after a few days of soft food, Ollie was back in form and eating everything that was served up! We recommend that you open your pet’s mouth at least once a week (dogs AND cats!) and make sure all is healthy. The best tooth care, like people, is a toothbrush and toothpaste – the chicken or beef flavoured kind, not human spearmint flavour! Dental chews and dental diet also help! NB. There are Board Certified veterinary dentists close by in Sydney who are set up to carry out endodontic procedures such as root canal therapy and crown reductions if you are keen to preserve important teeth instead of extracting them – if so, ask us for a referral. The end game is to reduce or eliminate pain and progression of dental disease!

Vitamins

Our bodies need vitamins to stay healthy. Vitamins help body cells work properly, and can also help to treat some health problems. The best source of most vitamins is a healthy diet. Some people also need to take vitamin supplements, but taking more vitamins than your body needs can be harmful. Ask a doctor, pharmacist, dietitian or naturopath for advice.

Healthy eating

Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) and Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDIs) are guides to the amounts of vitamins your body needs each day. Most people can get their daily vitamin needs by eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes a lot of different foods. A healthy, balanced diet means: • eating a wide variety of healthy foods every day • eating mainly vegetables, legumes and wholegrain foods (e.g. wholegrain/wholemeal breads, cereals, pasta, rice, quinoa, couscous) • eating moderate amounts of fruit • eating moderate amounts of lean meat, fish, skinless poultry, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds • eating moderate amounts of reduced-fat dairy foods (e.g. milk, yoghurt, cheese) • eating small amounts of fat, sugar and salt (e.g. oils, butter, margarine, cakes, desserts, pastries, cream, chips, pizzas, lollies, chocolate, soft drinks, fruit juice) • drinking enough water every day to satisfy your thirst and to keep your urine ‘light-coloured’ (unless a doctor advises you not to) • having no more than two standard alcohol drinks a day. The way food is prepared and cooked can reduce its vitamin content. To keep the vitamins in food: • prepare food just before serving • cook vegetables for only a short time (e.g. steam or microwave) • wash and scrub vegetables instead of peeling them • re-use cooking water in gravies, soups and stews

leave vegetables in large pieces and do not soak them before cooking.

Vitamin supplements

You may not get enough vitamins in your diet to stay healthy if you have: • a poor diet (e.g. eat a lot of ‘junk’ food) • a diet low in certain foods for health, cultural or religious reasons (e.g. people following a vegan diet) • a need for extra vitamins (e.g. while recovering from illness or surgery, while pregnant or breastfeeding) • a lifestyle that can reduce vitamin levels (e.g. get no sun on your skin, smoke cigarettes, consume a large amount of alcohol, use illegal drugs) • a medical condition that can affect vitamin levels (e.g. coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis, gastrectomy) • medicines that can affect vitamin levels (check with your pharmacist) If you don’t get enough vitamins from your diet, you may need to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements are available as tablets, capsules and liquids. Sometimes, vitamins are best given as an injection. Ask a your pharmacist or doctor for advice. It is very important to take a vitamin supplement at the dose recommended on the label. Get medical advice first if you want to take more. Taking high doses of some vitamins can increase the risk of side effects.

Just who is walking whom?

Walking your dog is supposed to be fun and pleasant, but if your dog pulls it becomes an exhausting and unpleasant exercise. A dog that pulls their owner often misses out on going places, it becomes too hard for the owner. Keeping a dog under control on leash is important for the safety of the dog and other people and pets. Training not to pull on leash is very important and it’s never too late to start. There are various ways to help overcome pulling from excitable dogs, before heading out on your walk a good idea is to have a play in the yard to release excess energy before heading off. Training in correct heel is important. Always have your dog on the left side of your body. This gives the dog a clue to walk when you step off, as they are reading your body language. If the dog starts pulling don’t pull back or yank the leash, this doesn’t send the correct message to the dog. The use of high reward treats works well. Place some treats in a training pouch or bum bag and immediately the

dog pulls, stop walking and ask the dog to sit. The best way is to use a correction word like “uh uh” and ask the dog to sit, get it to look at you, then reward with a treat, then move forward again. Every time the dog pulls repeat the stop, look, treat and try again, this can take some time There are many different styles of collars, body harnesses and head harnesses available but the correct product depends on your breed of dog. Some dogs like Pugs and Bulldogs have thick necks, small heads and short muzzles and cannot be fitted with a head harnesses, often these breeds are best in a body harness. Breeds like Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Rottweiler’s, tend to be very strong, boisterous and are often pullers on leads, these breeds are well suited to head harnesses. Standard poodles have long muzzles and are best suited to a head harness. If they are pullers on leash, they can suffer from damage to their trachea. It is very important that the head harness is fitted correctly. Dogoverboard staff are happy to correctly fit and show you how to use them. Head harnesses are not muzzles, the dog can still bark, bite, catch a ball, but the dog cannot pull on the lead. Head harnesses work by leading the head from under the jaw and where the head goes the body follows. Practice calm walking, don’t yell at your dog to STOP pulling, Don’t pull back on the leash, practice reward based positive training, don’t give in, you need to be consistent to get results. Never use any harsh or cruel methods to prevent pulling. Never use a cruel pong collar that inflicts pain or use anything that causes any discomfort to the dog. Happy walking

Changing the way you eat

As up to 80% of our food is the same week in and week out, making changes to the way we eat can be difficult. On the one hand, making changes can have a significant impact on our health. On the other hand, making changes can be quite challenging due to this near habitual pattern but also due to time, money, ability, access to new ingredients, and other factors unique to each person. Here are four tips on how to set yourself up to successfully change the way you eat: 1. Do your research - Look at your diet and see where these foods are currently and then start looking for alternatives either to the food or the meal itself. Read labels so you know where these foods might be sneaking into your diet. 2.Have a plan - look for new food approaches and recipes to make it easier. The Paleo and Mediterranean diets are good places to start for many. There are many online and print resources to develop a plan of what to eat as well as to inspire and motivate you 3. Be prepared – you are more likely to fall back into old patterns when you don’t have something already prepared or planned. Do a weekly menu for all your meals and have easy to prepare snack options on hand at all times. 4. Get support – you may get tempted or frustrated, especially in the early days. So find ways to get the encouragement and guidance you need to succeed. Enlist your family and friends, join an online group so you get the inspiration and guidance to keep you going. Find a professional to help guide and support whilst keeping you accountable. When changing the way you eat, there will be challenges, hurdles and some setbacks. And that’s okay, the goal is to make consistent, not perfect changes. So do your research, have a plan, be prepared and get the support to help you make healthy changes to what you eat. It is a powerful way to improve your health.
