If you have caught buses in and around Newcastle over the last four decades there’s a good chance Darrell Lock was your driver at some point. And if your driver wasn’t Darrell, he probably trained them.

After 41 years as both a bus driver and a driver trainer, Darrell, of Birmingham Gardens, retired last month.

When asked what he would miss about the job Darrell told The Local “Well I can tell you what it won’t be. And that’s getting up at 4.30 every morning.”

Pools apart

How is it possible that Newcastle’s biggest inland swimming facility has been neglected for so long?

It’s certainly not due to a lack of customers. Pass by the southern end of Lambton Park on any warm and/ or sunny day in spring, summer or even autumn and the cars parked in every conceivable spot tell you instantly that a big crowd has passed through the turnstile that day. We do genuinely love our Lambton Pool.

That Lambton Pool needs a proper plan of renewal and maintenance to ensure that it survives beyond the next few years is obvious it seems to all except our elected Council.

The popularity of Lambton Pool and its mid-20th century facilities, make me wonder what it takes to attract funding.

Surely the funding to redevelop art galleries and build new skate parks isn’t based on user numbers alone. If it was Lambton Pool would be at the top of the queue. Not only do an average of 184,000 people use the pool annually, they pay for the privilege of doing so. The same cannot be said for art galleries and skate parks.

The good people from the ‘We Love Lambton Pool’ alliance have created a short survey and are asking us all to share our views on Lambton Pool, its state of (dis)repair and help plan for its future.

Turn to pages 16 and 17 of this issue to find the We Love Lambton Pool community survey.

Everyone is invited and strongly encouraged to complete it. Whether you’re a regular lap-swimmer, an occasional pool user or haven’t dipped your toes in for some years, your views on the future of Lambton Pool are important.

If a plan for its future isn’t put in place soon I fear, as one astute social media post noted recently, that Lambton Pool will effectively demolish itself.

Phil a Freeman of the City

A former campaigner to improve health and safety conditions for those working in abattoirs is the latest to be conferred as a Freeman of the City of Newcastle. Long-time Lambton and now Fletcher resident, Phil Mahoney, became the 16th recipient of the lifetime achievement award at Newcastle City Hall last month, in recognition of his work throughout the 1970s and 80s as a Commonwealth Meat Inspector, changing the way the industry responded to zoonotic diseases, such as Q-Fever, brucellosis, and leptospirosis.

Mr Mahoney was also lauded for his significant contributions to the entertainment industry as a performer, children’s show host and mentor, his past and current mentees including homegrown international country music star Morgan Evans and Derek Redfern of Young Talent Time fame, who travelled from Melbourne to perform for dignitaries and guests at the award ceremony.

Mr Mahoney’s achievements don’t end there, lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said, with Camp Quality, the Australian Heart Foundation, No Kids Hungry Australia, Black Dog Institute, Melanoma Institute, and Foster Carers Association all benefiting from his extensive charity work.

“Phil has worked tirelessly over many decades to improve the lives of others, raising the first funds for The Calvary Mater hospital’s oncology clinic and revolutionising cancer treatment for local patients by reducing travel to Sydney,” the lord mayor said.

“I am proud to present the city’s highest honour to such a worthy recipient who has dedicated his life’s work to these important causes.”

Mr Mahoney said it was a privilege to receive the award among friends, family and supporters. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the lord

mayor and the people of Newcastle for bestowing this honour on me,” Mr Mahoney said.

“I’m thrilled to share this moment with those who have been part of the journey. My colourful career wouldn’t be half of what it is without their support, and I look forward to continuing to give back to the community and entertainment industry.”

Visit City of Newcastle’s website for further information about the Freeman of the City award program, including past recipients.

“The Australian Government is committed to providing all schools with appropriate funding so that all students, including those in St Therese’s Primary School, New Lambton, get the best possible education.”

Ms Claydon said the new facilities would benefit the students currently at St Therese’s Primary School, as well as the many students who will follow in future years.

“The students, teachers, and staff at St Therese’s Primary School have built a strong and positive school community and these new facilities will further enhance our local educational opportunities,” Ms Claydon said.

Help research into carer wellbeing

Dr Kristen McCarter from Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle is a Clinical Psychologist leading a study into supporting the emotional wellbeing of carers of people with advanced cancer.

Dr McCarter has lived experience of caring for her father, who had colorectal cancer. He spent one month in Calvary Mercy Hospice at The Calvary Mater hospital in Newcastle. At the time, Dr McCarter was 29 years old and doing her PhD, based at the Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research at the Mater, staying overnight with her father and then also seeing a psychologist at the Psycho-oncology Service at the hospital. She felt like she spent her whole life there. What she says she wasn’t prepared for is the fact that, even in palliative care, sometimes there’s nothing that can be done to ease a patient’s pain. This was the case for her father.

After his death, Dr McCarter says that she experienced post-traumatic symptoms and intrusive memories. This spurred her on to research the creation of support models for carers of people with advanced cancer.

The iACT study – that stands for Information and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy – is a clinical

exploration of a mode of therapy that helps people handle difficulty and painful thoughts and feelings and live a values-based life. The study uses specially designed self-help workbooks combined with support ‘check-ins’ from a psychologist and a Facebook support group.

The workbooks were designed and used by Dr Esther Davis (a clinical psychologist) in her PhD, and the iACT study has added more support check-ins (via text, phone and/or email) and access to a peer support group facilitated with Dr McCarter. The study also includes information resources on topics related to caring for someone with advanced cancer.

Dr McCarter says they are testing the model of care to make it more flexible and supportive but low resource intensive to make it affordable to deliver.

The ultimate goal is to get iACT introduced into Palliative Care units and Psycho-Oncology services as a supplementary support for carers.

The iACT program deals with reducing the distress that comes with difficult and painful thoughts and feelings and also connecting with values and pursuing what is meaningful.

The ‘i’ in the program is all about providing useful, relevant information that connects people to supports. The study is currently open and Dr McCarter is seeking interested participants that are carers for people with advanced cancer. An inclusive playground enriched with traditional indigenous elements are key features of a new milliondollar playspace proposed for Hamilton’s most historic park.

City of Newcastle has unveiled a concept design for the larger, reimagined playground and amenities upgrade at the much-loved Gregson Park, which will be placed on public exhibition for community feedback.

Alongside a variety of traditional play equipment, the playground features a range of accessible, sensory and nature-based play options, with an array of traditional indigenous elements including a yarning circle to encourage knowledge sharing, bush tucker garden to enrich learning of native edible plants and a ‘meeting place’ to signify where people meet and gather round in circles.

Additional shade, a water feature, formal and informal seating, and footbridges are also featured as part

of the concept design, complemented by an upgraded, accessible amenities building and new covered picnic area to ensure the park is an inclusive place for all.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said creating a new inclusive playspace enhanced by traditional Indigenous elements form part of the overall vision for Gregson Park in line with the adopted Gregson Park Masterplan.

“City of Newcastle is committed to delivering quality playgrounds and green spaces across the Newcastle LGA for locals and visitors to enjoy,” Cr Nelmes said.

“Extensive community engagement was undertaken as part of the preparation of the Gregson Park Masterplan 2021, with feedback into the concept design for a new playspace and upgraded amenities including consultation with First Nations Australians to appropriately capture indigenous elements in the

design with further consultation still to be undertaken.”

Councillor Carol Duncan, who is also the Chair of the Community and Culture Advisory Committee, encouraged the community to have their say during the public exhibition period to ensure Gregson Park’s playspace continues to be enjoyed by families for generations to come.

“Gregson Park provides a green heart for the unique and historic suburb of Hamilton and is much loved by local families and the wider community. A reimagined playspace and upgraded amenities will enhance the future enjoyment of the park for the next generation, which is why we’re seeking feedback from a broad spectrum of our community to ensure we have it right.” Cr Duncan said. The detailed concept designs for Gregson Park playspace and amenities upgrade will be on public exhibition until 16 December.

We Love Lambton Pool community survey 2022

If you care about the future of Lambton Pool now is the time to have your say.

We Love Lambton Pool is an alliance of pool users whose aim is to ensure that Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre (Lambton Pool) survives and thrives into the future.

The pool complex will be 60 years old in January 2023. It is showing its age and structural problems are evident.

City of Newcastle does not seem to have a plan or a budget for fixing the problems and ensuring the pool’s next 60 years.

To help us advocate for the kind of pool you want, tell us a bit about how and why you use the pool, or don’t use it, and what you think about its current condition and management. All responses are confidential.

Everyone in your household can do the survey by scanning the QR Code above to do it online, or filling it out on these pages and posting it to ‘We Love Lambton Pool Survey’ c/- PO Box 130 Lambton 2299 or emailing your responses to welovelambtonpool@gmail.com

THAT WAS THEN This is now

The Newcastle to Sydney electric telegraph line

Prior to 1860, communication between Newcastle and Sydney required either a sea voyage or an arduous road journey. It could take days or weeks to receive a reply to a message. That situation changed radically in January 1860 when the electric telegraph service to Newcastle was inaugurated.

The telegraph line was erected along the Great North Road, running through Wisemans Ferry, Wollombi and Maitland, and enabled short messages to be instantly transmitted using Morse code.

In 1883 Newcastle’s first telephone exchange opened with 25 private and commercial subscribers. The local telephone network gradually expanded and in 1896 the government allocated funds to provide a trunk connection between Newcastle and Sydney. Arthur Espley of Hamilton won the tender to supply 3000 ironbark poles, and John Elder was contracted to install the poles and wiring along the rail line from Milson’s Point to Newcastle. Construction commenced in March 1897 and by September had reached Gosford. While constructing the northern part of the line, Elder’s

workmen set up camp for four months at Adamstown near the railway level crossing.

Ralph Snowball photographed the camp on 30 December 1897 (see opposite page), four days before the service commenced on 3 January 1898.

The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate reported that “Mr. Arthur Fenwick was the first person to use the new telephone line … the gentleman spoken to in Sydney could not at first believe that a resident of Newcastle was speaking to him.”

The same location as Ralph Snowball’s image but 125 years later. Phone calls to Sydney are now 125,000 times cheaper.

Calls to Sydney could only be made by attending the telegraph office in Hunter Street Newcastle, and just one person could use the line at any time. At a cost of 3 shillings for a 3 minute conversation, and with miners earning 6 shillings a day at that time, it is somewhat astonishing to consider that a phone call to Sydney cost half a day’s wages!

Amid our current inflationary pressures, it’s worth remembering how ridiculously cheap phone calls are today compared to 125 years ago.

Book Review

A Christmas

Carol

Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly, unpleasant man who despises Christmas and overworks his clerk Bob Cratchit.

As he prepares for another Christmas Eve without celebration, Scrooge is greeted by his dead business partner, Jacob Marley who warns him that his greed will not go unpunished.

At first, Scrooge doesn’t heed Marley’s warning, but soon he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. He is made to face his cruel nature, and to consider whether he should change his ways.

I thought Dickens’s writing was great. It was a joy to read Scrooge, his nephew and Bob Cratchit came to life on the page.

I thought each visitation was well written and I loved how Dickens gradually showed Scrooge’s change of heart. The Ghost of Christmas Present was my favourite.

I got all teary-eyed when the ghost started to age during the journey with Scrooge.

The happy ending was predictable to an extent but Dickens manages to pull it off. My heart lifted right along with Scrooge’s.

I get why A Christmas Carol is one of the best known and most loved Christmas tales..

Pole position

Dear Here to Help,

I was riding the bike path in Jesmond, beside the bypass, and a pole was sticking out at 45 degrees. I didn’t see it as it was in the tree shadows and was not marked with any tape or paint. I hit the pole and hurt myself, my bike and my Strava times!

I notified Council and about six months later, the pole was removed, then put back, still at a 45 degree angle. What is the process to get Council to do something about this dangerous pole, before it causes serious injury to someone? And how long should all this take?

Thank you for your query.

The City of Newcastle has an online service request form and you can always call 49742000. However, there are no timeframes for them to come back to you, or deal with an issue.

Sometimes things go missing, so it is always worth trying again – either lodging the form again or phoning to follow up on your report. In my experience,

phoning to follow up is usually a better option, as you can get the name of the person you talk to.

Council doesn’t provide any timeframes for responding to a report, but they say for easy issues, they will try to get back within 48-72 hours.

Claims for compensation must be lodged using the appropriate form.

If you are not happy with the outcome, you can lodge a complaint. Their policy explains how council handles complaints.

In terms of timeframes, they undertake to acknowledge all complaints within three working days. Once council has decided on its response, it will contact you withing 15 working days to advise you. This means most simple complaints should be resolved in this time, but complaints that council sees as complex do not have a timeframe to be resolved.

You can appeal council’s decision on your complaint. First, to someone more senior in council. Then, to an external agency, which could be the Ombudsman, Office of Local Government or ICAC, depending on the situation.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

Is this Sciatica?

Sciatica. We’ve all heard the word. I probably have at least two people per week telling me they think they might have it. But what is it?

Sciatica is an old term for a condition that we now call radiculopathy. Bit of a mouthful, but it’s just a term for pain and dysfunction caused by a problem at the nerve root in your back or neck. The sensation usually presents in your legs or arms and can cause pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or loss of strength. A true radiculopathy can be scary, nerve pain isn’t

and the sensation of numbness, loss of strength and shooting pain can really scare people.

So – what should you do if this happens to you? Here’s a few tips on how to manage if you feel this is something you’re experiencing:

1. Don’t panic! Even though the pain can be bad and the sensations can be scary, most people will recover within 6 weeks. The first few weeks aren’t much fun – but it does get better.

2. Keep moving: When you’re in pain, your muscles tend to do a thing where they try to ‘lock up’ to ‘protect’ you. This usually isn’t very helpful as it makes you feel stiff and sore. Gentle movement such as walking or hydrotherapy is a good way to teach your muscles that it’s okay to move while maintaining strength.

3. See a good Physio: The initial stages of a radiculopathy can be quite painful, and a good physio will help you navigate your pain, keep you moving, give you strategies to ease your pain and liaise with other health professionals about the best way to help you.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing a dodgy nerve and needs help to get back on their feet, reach out to our wonderful team on 4062 8862 or book

What is Title Insurance?

Title Insurance is a specific form of indemnity insurance available for vacant land, house or strata property, which can help to protect home buyers and existing homeowners against financial loss sustained from issues relating to the Title of their property. These issues may include illegal or non-compliant building works that may have been carried out by previous owners without Council approval, errors by Council in reporting any outstanding charges on a property,

compulsory acquisition of all or part of the property by the Government which was not known at the time of purchase, someone claiming an interest in the property in certain circumstances, any restrictions or covenants not known or disclosed in the property documents, competing ownership claim for the property, or boundary errors and encroachments.

Title Insurance is different from your home and contents insurance, which protects the physical structure of your dwelling as well as your belongings. Title Insurance is intended to protect you from claims against the Title itself. Home and contents insurance policies are usually renewed annually and Title Insurance is a one off premium, which is valid for the period of your ownership of the property.

Title Insurance does not replace the need for due diligence, and it is imperative that you engage the services of a Solicitor or Conveyancer to protect your interests when purchasing a property. If you consider Title Insurance, it is important to read the details of the policy in relation to any limits or exclusions, in particular relating to things that are known to you at the time of your purchase.

Relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques can reduce the physical and emotional effects of stress and tension. They are simple to learn and help the body and mind cope with stress. If used regularly, relaxation techniques can help you to feel more relaxed and improve your sense of wellbeing.

Constant, extreme stress can lead to anxiety disorders, depression or other serious medical conditions.

Techniques to relax

There are many ways to release tension and relax such as sport, exercise and listening to music. Relaxation techniques are simply tools for relaxing the mind and body. Different techniques suit different people and situations. Relaxation techniques can reduce your levels of stress hormones, heart rate and blood pressure, muscle tension and sweating. Aim to set aside a regular time each day for relaxation techniques. Find a quiet, safe place to sit or lie comfortably.

Some relaxation techniques

Controlled breathing: close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose for three seconds, then breathe out through your mouth for three seconds. Think the word ‘relax’ as you breathe out. Clear your mind and think only about slow, deep breathing. Imagine the tension flowing out of your body each time you breathe out.

Muscle relaxation: close your eyes and focus on your body. Start at your feet and focus on different muscles at a time. Tense the muscle as you breathe in, and then relax it as you breathe out. Imagine all the tension flowing out of your body. Move up your body, relaxing different muscles in turn. Allow 15–20 seconds between each muscle group. Keep your mind focused on the muscle group you are working on. Allow 15–20 minutes to practice muscle relaxation.

Visualisation: close your eyes and imagine a safe, soothing, peaceful scene (e.g. a beach or quiet place in the bush). See yourself there, relaxed, peaceful and happy.

Mindfulness and realistic thinking

Mindfulness is a form of self-awareness. It involves learning to be in control of your thoughts and focusing on the ‘here and now’, rather than the past or future. Train yourself to be aware of your thoughts, place a label on them (e.g. sad thought, angry thought) and allow them to float away.

Physical exercise

Physical exercise releases muscle tension and increases the levels of ‘feel good’ chemicals in our bodies. Any type of regular physical exercise is helpful.

Note: If you don’t normally exercise, are more than 40 years of age or are overweight, consult a doctor for a medical checkup before starting an exercise program.

Self care

Ways to prevent a build up of stress and tension include:

• use relaxation techniques as often as you can and especially in situations that cause you stress

• have a healthy diet. Eat a variety of vegetables, fruit, wholegrain foods, nuts and seeds every day. Limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt

• drink enough water every day to satisfy your thirst and to keep your urine ‘light-coloured’ (unless a doctor advises not to)

• exercise at a moderate level for at least 30 minutes on all or most days of the week

• taking a warm shower or bath can be calming and relax muscles

• talk about problems and worries with a friend or family member. They may help you see things in a different way

• accept that sometimes problems or situations are outside your control

• learn to forgive yourself and others for mistakes

• learn to recognise what’s worth worrying about and what’s not

• learn to say ‘no’ to tasks that put you under too much pressure

• balance work and play. Make time for hobbies. These will relax your mind and are a good escape from worries

• manage your time. Make a ‘to do’ list. Put your daily tasks in order of importance and allow enough time to get things done. Finish your day feeling like you have achieved something
