”To our amazing, passionate, food and music loving customers, the countless incredibly talented artists that have given their all on our stage. The fabulous agents, promoters, and managers we have dealt with over the last 14 years here at Lizotte’s at Newcastle, it is with an “excited-heavy heart” that I announce that Jo and I have made a massive decision to place the Kings Theatre and Lizotte’s Newcastle on the market for sale. We have put an incredible amount of time thinking and talking about this and have realised that our growing family is now to be our main focus. It is our hope to pass this iconic beautiful old venue with its world-class entertainment and fine cuisine baton onto a fabulous new operator. I’ve been an irregular blood donor for about 15 years. No, that didn’t sound right, did it? It’s not my blood that’s irregular, it’s making and then keeping appointments to donate that is irregular. Whole blood is something you can healthily donate every 12 weeks. I should therefore be approaching 60 visits by now but due to a sometimes crazy diary I’m languishing on just 33 visits.

I know that number 33 because last month when I did keep an appointment the lovely nurse told me that on my next visit I will have saved 100 lives. Apparently each donation gives life saving treatment to three people. I was chuffed to hear that. A whole blood donation takes around 30 minutes from my experience including completing a screening questionaire, a short pre-donation interview and the obligatory post-donation snack attack. Truth is you are only up close and personal with a needle for about 10 Plasmaminutes.and platelet donations take longer but I can’t speak with any authority on these having not donated Aeither.whole blood donation is 470ml or about 8% of the average adult’s blood volume. Within 48 hours of donating, your body has fully restored your blood volume. Now that’s pretty clever. The most telling statistic about blood donation is that whilst one in three people will need a blood transfusion at some stage in life only 3% of us are There’sdonors. always a need for more donors, especially if like me, others don’t front up as often as they plan. We have a very welcoming Lifeblood Donor Centre in our midst at 165 Lambton Rd Broadmeadow If you’ve been thinking it please go to: www.lifeblood. com.au or call 13 14 95 to see if you qualify as a donor.

TAFE and the Physical Disability Council of NSW are encouraging people to consider undertaking fee-free training in disability support courses to help meet an unprecedented demand for workers in the Hunter. The sector is Australia’s fastest growing, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) National Workforce Plan indicating an additional 83,000 workers will be needed to meet demand in the next two years.

Professor Kay-Lambkin says a few years ago, ‘cyberchondria’ didn’t really exist. “Today, we use cyberchondria to describe situations where people feel compelled to continue to search online and seek reassurance about fears associated with their health or illness, worries about having developed a serious illness, various bodily symptoms they are concerned about, and so on,” Professor KayLambkin said.

In the lead up week a number of well-attended community and cultural events were held but unfortunately the Sunday event in the Park could not proceed due to public health orders. The funds were instead applied to some recently installed custom-designed park seating and a table as well as signage to mark the 150 years. “It is important that we acknowledge and celebrate such an historic suburb and its residents of yesteryear and today, and now we have a landmark for the future.” committee chair Andrea Rufo OAM told The Local. “None of the celebrations or this seating and signage would have been possible without the financial support of the major sponsor City of Newcastle, and other generous sponsors including GWH Build, The Local and Piggott’s Pharmacy. Mr Rufo also added his sincere thanks to local partners including Newcastle Theatre Company and Lizotte’s for their support and expertise.

The Newcastle-Hunter showroom of Dress for Success Sydney is on the brink of closure due to a funding crisis. The charity is appealing to the local community to support their impactful work by helping to crowdfund $75,000 this month. This equates to the cost to keep the showroom doors open for a year. Operating in Sydney since 2010, Dress for Success Sydney saw the need to expand employment support services to the Newcastle-Hunter region, and with community support, opened a pop-up showroom in Now,2019. with a permanent showroom space in Broadmeadow, the branch supports more than 200 women a year through their signature interview styling and presentation skills offering, career support workshops and one-on-one job preparation services. The volunteer-led organisation shifted to online service delivery during the pandemic and added Virtual Styling to the mix, a program that has since expanded to deliver quality clothing to women in regional New South Wales. Newcastle-Hunter volunteers were pivotal during the 2021 lockdowns, running the Style Delivered program: selecting, packing, and sending clothing parcels to women for work, prison release and disaster relief.

The not-for-profit does not receive regular government funding and relies heavily on fundraising campaigns and in-person events to fund its programs and services. The latter of which was heavily impacted over the last two years. “Our small team hustles to forge philanthropic relationships and deliver fundraising initiatives but the pandemic really changed how businesses and individuals are able to spend their money”, Leisa Sadler CEO of Dress for Success Sydney explains.

As with many other diseases positive lifestyle choices can make a huge difference. Most of us know that a healthy diet which includes fruits and vegetables and daily physical activity is good for us. We also know that smoking can cause significant health issues.

Whilst there is no population based screening for prostate cancer, it is recommended that once men reach 50 years of age they talk to their GP about getting a simple blood test to check their ProstateSpecific Antigen (PSA) levels.

Prostate cancer has now surpassed breast cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men.

A higher than normal reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have prostate cancer, but it can indicate that further investigation is required. Those with a family history should have this conversation when they reach 40 years old. Knowing your family history is important because if it includes prostate cancer, your risk of diagnosis doubles.

Page 12 > The Local > September 2022 www.thelocalnewcastle.com.au

Locally we are lucky to have excellent diagnostic and treatment facilities which help with early detection. A wide range of treatments are also offered including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

On a more positive note, between 1987 – 1991 and 2014 – 2018, the five-year relative survival for prostate cancer improved from 60 per cent to 95 per cent. The important thing is early diagnosis, which understandably leads to better outcomes.

Calvary Mater Newcastle has a robust clinical trials unit which offers access to world leading treatments.

When we look at the annual figures it means that 24,217 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. This equates to 66 men per day compared to 57 people being diagnosed daily with breast cancer.

However, we often forget the importance of good sleep habits, good friends and social support, and starting something new. In fact, it’s OK to enjoy all or most things in moderation and to try and laugh often.

If you ring this number you will be put in contact with trained volunteers who have experienced prostate cancer. They don’t give medical advice, but provide an understanding of what to expect and give an insight into living with prostate cancer. Please make September the month you think about your health and chat to your GP if anything in this article raises concerns.

Just like in your family, people work together to ensure that things that need doing are done, our community works much the same way. This doesn’t mean that the load is spread evenly. But we do work together, with our individual skills and abilities, to make sure that things happen, like having food on the Governmenttable. does not – and cannot – know everything. Even in dystopian writing, such as Catch-22, things happen that government doesn’t see. And that is the way it should be. That does mean that if you notice something dangerous, or not okay, the issues will be resolved much more quickly if you report them to the relevant authorities – often local Council or even the police. This might be a hole that could hurt people, or an abandoned vehicles in your street, or even a piece of legislation that makes no sense or creates counterproductive outcomes.

Dear Here to Help, I was going for my morning walk recently and noticed a big hole in the path. I was quite concerned that somebody may come to grief tripping on it. I wasn’t sure what to do and eventually someone suggested that I contact the Council. I noticed that, after I contacted Council, the hole was quickly repaired and the path was made safe again. I would have thought Council had its own system for discovering issues – is it usual that I had to notify them? Thanks for your query. I guess the easiest way to answer your question is to say that it is impossible for anyone – be it a government agency, a corporation or an individual –to know everything.

In February 1941 a severe shortage of signals personnel prompted the air force to form the WAAAF, with an enrolment of 250 women to be trained as wireless and teleprinter operators. During World War 2, New Lambton Public School was commandeered by the RAAF. But not just men served there, but also a large contingent from the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF).

WAAAF, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), aided by volunteers and donations from the public, opened a hostel in a shop and residence at the corner of Hobart and Rugby Roads. The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner’s Advocate report of the opening ceremony on 5 May 1942 noted that “The hostel has sleeping accommodation for nine, an attractive bathroom, a lounge-room where the girls can entertain their friends or write letters home, a piano, sewing machine, and a cheery kitchen where they can cook a meal.” In the first four months, 351 WAAAFs were accommodated at nights. In December 1942 the YWCA closed the hostel when they opened a larger facility in Hunter Street Newcastle. This proved unsatisfactory for the WAAAF in New Lambton, and on 24 July 1943 the Church Army re-opened the Hobart Road site. The hostel finally closed in September 1944, when the RAAF transferred their operations at the school to new headquarters on Ash Island. After the war, the WAAAF was disbanded, having had 27000 women serve in 72 different trades. You can view these photos and details at lachlanwetherall.com

Changes affecting Strata Plans in NSW

Important changes came into effect on 30 June 2022 in relation to Strata Plans in NSW. The new reporting requirements will digitally consolidate information regarding the 84,000 Strata Plans in NSW onto the NSW Strata Portal, allowing for greater accountability on how Strata Plans are managed. By 30 September 2022, all Strata Plans in NSW must be registered on the Strata Portal and provide basic information about the Strata Plan. An annual administration fee of $3.00 per Lot will apply. Additional information will need to be added to the Portal following the next Annual General Meeting of

Getting back on the horse

‘So, what do you like to do for exercise?’

Jenny* (52), looked down at the floor. ‘I used to be fit, I loved swimming, but now I can barely put on a pair of shoes without losing my breath’. Jenny sat in front of me looking tired, a little embarrassed and very deflated. She’d recently had a hysterectomy and while in hospital she’d acquired Covid-19. Jenny had then gone home and because of a combination of nausea, fatigue, and just general down-in-the-dumpiness, she’d had a fall and injured

Over the following weeks, Jenny and I worked together to settle her shoulder pain and introduced little exercises to increase her fitness and shoulder function for swimming. Six weeks later she was back in the pool.

‘Swimming is absolutely something you’ll be able to do again’ I encouraged her.

‘Thanks for supporting me’ Jenny said at her final appointment. ‘Without your encouragement, I don’t know if I’d have ever been able to get back on the horse!’

‘Is swimming something you’d like to get back to?’ I asked Jenny. ‘Yes’, she replied, ‘but I feel as though with this shoulder and my surgery it might be something I never do again, not in the same way at least’. For the general population, two weeks of inactivity will result in a noticeable loss of cardiovascular fitness, and three weeks will amount to a noticeable loss in strength. Jenny had been inactive for around six weeks by the time she got to me, so she definitely wasn’t feeling her best self.

Always check with a doctor or Pharmacist before using complementary medicines or alternative therapies to treat depression.

Signs and symptoms

• drinking more alcohol (or using more drugs).

Talking is often the first step in managing depression. Counselling and other psychological therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) are important treatments. These therapies can help you change unhelpful patterns of thinking and acting.

Anyone can develop depression at any age. It is more common in people with a family history of depression. Depression is often caused by a combination of factors. Some factors that may play a role in causing depression are:

• thinking of suicide

If you have had any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, talk to your doctor. If you are a parent, watch out for these symptoms in your teenagers.

• other mental illnesses (e.g. anxiety, dementia, schizophrenia). Treatment There are several different types of therapy for depression. Successful treatment often involves using more than one of these.

Depression is much more than feeling in a low mood after a sad or stressful event. Depression is a serious mental and physical condition that changes how a person thinks, feels and behaves. People with depression need professional help and sometimes medicines to get better.

Causes

Local doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and some counsellors can help with these therapies.

Antidepressant medicines can help some people. There are many types of antidepressants, and a person may need to try several antidepressants before finding one that suits them. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice about

3. Get friendly. Human interaction is essential if we are not to become isolated and lonely. Take care of your relationships. Revitalise older ones, cultivate some new ones. Join a group. The best social relationships are those that provide close emotional support and an adequate amount of stimulation, challenge, and social engagement.

Every year, a couple of years after they’ve finished work, I see a few retirees who typically are depressed. The problem is always the same. They have put in a lot of effort to look after their financial security but precious little effort to look after any other area of their Meaningfullife. activity is essential for good mental health, so ‘What am I going to do for the next twentyfive years’? is an important question. Here are four fundamentals that make a huge difference.

1. Get physical. Daily exercise where possible is a

non-negotiable. Exercise will improve your physical health including heart health, lung capacity, weight control, blood pressure, mobility and brain health.

2. Get mental. Crystallised intelligence is the ability to use skills, knowledge, and experience. Its speed tends to slow as we age. We get there, but not as fast as when we were in our twenties. Research suggests that learning something novel that is challenging and that produces an outcome is beneficial for our cognitive health. It could even help to stave off dementia. So, learn a language, a musical instrument, how to use a computer, take a class, play chess, learn pottery, start painting, attend University of the 3rd Age (U3A).

Challenge your mind with something new.

4. Get busy. Hobbies and past-times are important to stave off boredom and depression. They give us purpose and a reason to get up in the morning. You can’t just get up every day to read the paper and watch television. You have to have something to do. Stuart
