As 2024 draws to a close, we present to you our annual Celebrate publication capturing the HSC achievements of the graduating cohort. They are among 70,000+ HSC students across NSW who received their HSC results and ATARs on Wednesday 18th December.
Each one of our graduates has their own talents. While we shine the spotlight on the high achievers across a range of endeavours (academics, arts, sports, leadership and service) in Celebrate, it is important to recognise those students who have demonstrated resilience and perseverance throughout their school journey We celebrate and honour each and every one of our graduates in these pages – every person in our graduating class has made an invaluable contribution to the fabric of HVGS.
We are proud of the achievements of the graduating Class of 2024. They embraced the relative autonomy of Years 11 and 12 and the many options their future holds They are a microcosm of Gen Z: a creative, tenacious and entrepreneurial generation and captured in these pages are the many “fruits of their labour”
31 of our graduates are on the Distinguished Achievers’ List and almost fifty percent achieved an ATAR of 80 or higher. Seven of our students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, and 15 were awarded an ATAR of 90 or above. As a non-selective and inclusive school, we should be proud of these achievements. Our goal is to meet each child where they are and help them get to where they need to go; these results are indicative of the hard work and commitment of our students and those teachers who have worked tirelessly to help our graduates reach their potential.
Students and parents frequently reference the extraordinary support, time and care given by our teachers, and indeed by all staff who influence and shape the learning opportunities of the students in our care. We acknowledge the significant work undertaken by all HVGS staff, often out of the view of colleagues and parents. On behalf of the community, I extend my sincere gratitude to our staff for their professional and personal commitment to all students.
Whilst the Class of 2024 is recognised in the HSC School Rankings published in the media, we also know that our students are much more than this ranking. Sitting behind each individual student are countless stories of endurance and effort as students challenge themselves to go that little harder and do that little bit better.
In Celebrate we also recognise and value individual excellence, such as Norah Rogers, our Year 12 Dux, who was awarded the highest ATAR, and Antoinette Harris-Payne who has been recognised on the NESA All-Round Achiever List This list celebrates students who achieved the highest possible Band in 10 or more units in their HSC Likewise, the highest individual HSC course result was 96/100, achieved by Eliza Mackenzie in Ancient History, Tully Munro in Food Technology, and Kaitlyn Young in Studies of Religion II.
Our graduates leave our gates now as young adults who, through their schooling, have learned much about their world and themselves They have also taught us much too Through their actions they have provided lessons to their peers and the broader school community about the importance of responsibility, compassion, respect, integrity, courage, optimism, citizenship and gratitude.
It is with the last value that I end: to our graduating class of 2024, thank you for sharing your educational journey with us and now take a moment to celebrate.

Norah has been a thoughtful and independent presence within the HVGS community, navigating her educational journey with a keen focus on exploring diverse interests and forging her own unique path.
Reflecting on her future career aspirations, Norah shares, “As I’ve grown, I’ve gravitated towards the idea of pursuing engineering, particularly in aerospace or chemical fields. However, I’m also drawn to architecture, so that’s another avenue I’m considering. I’m open to exploring and potentially shifting my focus as I continue to learn and grow.”
As she considers further study after the HSC, Norah remains open-minded and reflective: “I’m still weighing my options. I’m considering starting with a Bachelor of Science or Mathematics at the University of Newcastle. Alternatively, I may delve into aerospace or chemical engineering. There’s also a part of me that’s intrigued by history, so a Bachelor of Arts might be on the cards. Studying overseas is something I aspire to in the future as well.”
Norah’s approach to tackling her HSC studies has been defined by prioritisation and independence. She explains, “For me, the HSC has been about managing priorities. I’ve focused on what’s most important at any given time, rather than trying to do everything at once. I’ve found that this approach allows me to delve deeper into subjects and truly understand the material.”
Among her fondest memories of school are the spontaneous and light-hearted moments in class. “I cherish the random activities we did, like making posters in ancient history or the mishaps during science experiments. Trivia sessions where we won chocolate were always memorable too.”
When asked which school value best reflects her time at HVGS, Norah highlights responsibility: “Responsibility applies best because I’ve always taken responsibility for my homework, study, and assessments. I found early on that motivating myself was most effective.”
As she looks forward to celebrating the end of her thirteen-year schooling journey, Norah hopes for a trip to the UK. “If not, I’ll happily indulge in some much-needed rest and relaxation, trying to unwind after years of hard work.”
Norah’s other notable achievements this year include:
First place in Ancient History
First place in Mathematics Advanced
First place in Mathematics Extension 1
First place in Mathematics Extension 2
First place in Modern History
First place Physics

Antoinette Harris-Payne has achieved remarkable academic excellence in her final year of school, an accomplishment truly worthy of celebration. From receiving an HSC OnStage nomination to being named on the prestigious HSC All Round Achievers Merit List for achieving top band results in at least 10 units of study, Antoinette’s success reflects her strong work ethic and innate desire to learn.
Her impressive list of accolades highlights the profound connection between seeking and receiving exceptional support from her teachers, particularly in English and Drama, and approaching the HSC as a marathon rather than a sprint. With the knowledge that she had support, combined with her dedication, hard work, and focus on avoiding burnout, Antoinette was able to achieve outstanding final results.
As a child Antoinette was convinced she was destined to become a famous ventriloquist, though she has now moved on from that dream, and into a passion for law - particularly in youth justice.
Looking ahead, Antoinette plans to dive into further studies in law and the arts. “After the HSC, I’m excited to study law and arts at university. I believe this combination will offer a well-rounded perspective and open various career avenues.”
Managing the demands of the HSC has been a balancing act for Antoinette. “Balancing study, major works, and personal time has been essential. I’ve made it a priority to spend time with family and friends and ensure I have moments for myself.”
Antoinette’s most cherished school memories include the ancient history tour to Greece. “The Greece tour in Year 11 was an incredible experience. Immersing myself in the culture and appreciating historical contexts was truly unforgettable.”
Outside the classroom, Antoinette found joy in participating in musicals and plays.
“Being involved in school productions was fantastic. It allowed me to connect with younger students and push myself beyond my comfort zone.”
A surprising fact about Antoinette is her admiration for Alexander the Great. “I’m fascinated by Alexander the Great and have plans to start a podcast dedicated to his legacy. It’s a project I’m really excited about.”
To celebrate her years of schooling, Antoinette has planned a special getaway. “I’m heading to Moreton Island with a group of friends. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy time together after all our hard work.”
Antoinette’s other notable achievements this year include:
HSC OnStage nominations for outstanding group performance

Shams is eagerly anticipating the next chapter of her life after the HSC. “I’m planning to attend university and take part in exchange programs. The idea of experiencing different cultures and learning environments excites me.”
Her approach to tackling the HSC has been supported by a strong network of friends and family. “Having the support of my friends and family has been crucial. Their encouragement has helped me navigate through my studies effectively.”
Reflecting on her school years, Shams cherishes the memories of school camps and excursions. “Those moments spent with friends and peers are some of my fondest memories. They were not just fun, but also a great way to build lasting friendships.”
French has been Shams’ standout subject, capturing her interest and enthusiasm. “I absolutely love learning about the French language and culture. Practising this new skill has been a highlight of my school experience.”
Outside the classroom, Shams has enjoyed participating in netball and musical orchestras. “I really liked being involved in these group activities and wish I had taken part in even more.”
Looking towards the future, she has big dreams. “One of my major goals is to speak four languages fluently. I also have a passion for cooking, which is something I’m excited to explore further.”
Charlie’s journey from childhood cricket dreams to a future in civil engineering highlights his evolving passions and ambitions.
“As a kid, I dreamed of playing cricket for Australia. Although my focus has shifted, I’m now dedicated to pursuing a career in civil engineering.”
Charlie is gearing up for a future in engineering by pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle.
To tackle his HSC studies, Charlie has relied on a disciplined approach. “I’ve focused on making consistent, small efforts over time. This method has really helped me stay on track and manage my workload effectively.”
Music stands out as Charlie’s favourite subject. “Music is where I truly connect. Playing my instrument and collaborating with others brings me immense joy. Playing at Lizotte’s for the first time is a special memory.”
Charlie also values the sense of community he felt with his cohort. “The camaraderie and support within our group is really special. I wish I had been involved in even more communitybuilding activities.”
To celebrate the end of his schooling journey, Charlie has exciting plans. “I’m looking forward to travelling overseas and meeting new people. It’s the perfect way to mark this milestone and embrace new experiences,” says Charlie.
Eliza, our 2024 Vice Captain, has been an integral part of our school community throughout her years at HVGS.
“When I was younger, I had quite a range of aspirations—from singing on ‘The Voice’ to crafting with ‘Mr Maker’, but one of my more achievable dreams was working in a lolly shop. I imagined myself creating, selling, and enjoying lollies to my heart’s content!
“As I’ve grown older, my career goals have evolved, but I’m still drawn to fields that allow me to blend creativity with challenge. That’s why I’ve set my sights on pursuing a career in the business and marketing sector.”
Looking ahead to life after the HSC, Eliza is university bound. “I’m keen to further my studies at the University of NSW, where I hope to undertake a double degree in commerce and either design or arts,” says Eliza.
When asked about her approach to tackling the HSC, Eliza attributes her success to a combination of support systems and personal strategies. “I’ve had amazing teachers who have dedicated their time to helping me excel. Alongside them, my family and friends have provided unwavering support, keeping me grounded and motivated throughout this journey.”
Eliza’s journey through school has been marked by growth, exploration, and a deep appreciation for the bonds formed along the way. Her future in business and marketing awaits, promising new challenges and opportunities to showcase her talents and creativity.

Alex has always had big dreams. As a child, he was captivated by the mysteries of space, eagerly imagining a future as an astronaut. “I was really obsessed with space, planets, and I wanted to explore them all.”
As he grew older, however, Alex’s ambitions shifted toward a different, yet equally exciting path—law. His interest in law solidified after attending a law day at Newcastle University. “It really interested me to pursue it further,” says Alex.
After completing the HSC, Alex has his sights set on studying in Washington, following in his grandfather’s footstepsspecialising in Criminal Law, a field that continues to fascinate him.
When it comes to tackling his HSC studies, Alex has a clear strategy. “Planning it out before doing anything and being super organised” has been key to his success. He also emphasises balance, noting that he studies for an hour and a half each day and focuses on the process rather than the outcome.
Among Alex’s fondest memories of school is the unforgettable Vietnam trip. “It was a very unique experience, and I loved that I grew close with a lot of people. It was unforgettable, and I recommend it to all HVGS students,” he reflects.
A passionate musician, Alex’s favourite subject is Music. “I love expressing my feelings and creativity through music, and my teacher, Mr Gidney has made the subject even more enjoyable.”
Outside the classroom, Alex cherished his time on the school soccer team, an experience that allowed him to bond with his peers and engage in a sport he loves.

I’m excited to further progress my learning, form new friendships, and take on the endless number of opportunities that Uni life presents.”
Reflecting on how she’s tackled her HSC studies, Isabelle shared, “The HSC journey has many challenges, full of highs and lows. The word we’ve been told repeatedly is ‘consistency,’ and I’ve come to appreciate that consistent work really does pay off. It’s been late nights, lots of study, and hard work, but I’ve balanced it with sport, friends, and family.”
When asked which School value resonates most with her, she has chosen Courage. “Throughout my time here, I’ve constantly pushed myself out of my comfort zone, whether through leadership roles, sports, or academic challenges. This courage has shaped who I am today, and it’s a value I’ll carry with me after leaving HVGS.”
Jack, our other 2024 School Captain’s passion for swimming and his aspirations beyond school reflect his unwavering commitment to excellence.
Reflecting on his childhood dreams, Jack shares, “When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming a professional athlete—an aspiration that still resonates with me today.”
Now looking forward, Jack explains, “Apart from my swimming goals, my immediate plan after school involves a university education. I aim to start with a course in clinical science or biomedicine, with the hope of eventually transferring into a Doctor of Medicine program. Next year, I’ll also be preparing for the UCAT exam, a crucial step towards my medical aspirations. Ultimately, I aspire to specialise in paediatrics.”
Among his fondest school memories, Jack highlights the camaraderie experienced during various camps over the years. “The Year 11 Jindabyne camp, our Agriculture camp, and our Year 12 camp experiences have been filled with laughter and great memories shared with friends.”
Courage, optimism and integrity have been values Jack has displayed in his time at HVGS.
“School has tested me at times, and it’s been important to stay optimistic about the next step, no matter how daunting, while also having the courage to move forward. Integrity has also been crucial throughout my time here, especially in my role as captain, ensuring I stay honest and true to my moral values both in the classroom and beyond.”
