Others were inspired by the Hunter Valley ... dreamt a little ... and returned to start their wine making journey. Several have changed careers midstream (who wouldn’t), and many have just chosen this path because of that connection winemaking lends to nature and nurture and above all, especially to people. Men and women, old and young – these talented people are part of an elite but friendly community that are the Hunter Valley winemakers. Early starts, late finishes, hours on the tractor and always at the mercy of the weather, a winemaker’s life is not always at the glamourous end of tasting

POKOLBIN The heart of the Hunter Valley, when we say you’re spoilt for choice in Pokolbin, we aren’t kidding. The Hunter Valley is the oldest continuously-grown wine area dating back to the early 1800s. That means you’re tasting wines from some of the oldest vines in Australia and in Pokolbin they are aplenty. Obligatory, really. WOLLOMBI VALLEY Follow in the footsteps of the early pioneers along the convict-built Great North Road to the Wollombi Valley. “Wollombi” is derived from the Aboriginal meaning ‘meeting place’ and is a site of great indigenous significance. Apart from the unspoilt natural countryside, Wollombi Valley has a heady mix of attractions from rugged national parks, quaint villages and boutique wines to a lively arts scene.

VERDELHO A style unique to the Hunter Valley, Verdelho, customarily made without oak, is a fruit-driven medium-bodied wine. The highly-anticipated Wine Legend award was presented to Greg Walls, who has been a stalwart of the industry for almost 40 years; taking Hunter Valley wines to every region in Australia by providing a central location for local producers to sell their wines. He did this through his establishment of the Hunter Valley Wine Society in 1975, later evolving the business to Wine Selectors, which now delivers Hunter wines to a nationwide membership of more than 200,000. This year the Tourism Legend Award was presented to two icons of the Hunter Valley, Robert and Sally Molines. Robert and Sally have been delighting diners in the Hunter Valley for over 45 years, proudly supporting the wine and tourism industries with their culinary expertise and most recently at their one-hatted restaurant Bistro Molines nestled in the vines at Tallavera Grove in Mount View.

Home Grown Future The dream began in the late 70s, when Ian and Merralea set out to create their own wine company,

their own way in the Hunter Valley.

After discovering the perfect location on Gillards Rd, with its unique, rich red soils, the first vines were planted. Unburdened by the prospect of replanting a whole vineyard, the Scarborough clan set about creating their vision for the future.
