OUR FIRM Since 1978 , our commitment to strong, vibrant communities has inspired a wide range of distinctive yet accessible projects throughout Texas and the nation, reflecting our belief that effective planning and architecture reach across economic and social boundaries to touch all who experience them. While we are well-known for being involved with some of Austin’s most iconic institutions over the years such as Whole Foods Market, we take great pride in our civic projects, in particular, the schools, libraries and public spaces that create the setting for community life. Whether public or private, we favor timeless projects designed with an eye, not on the latest architectural trend or signature style, but on the special needs of our clients and the community at large. As active members of Austin’s “Green Building” program, we are keenly aware of environmental issues and strive to create buildings that enhance the health and well being of both the earth and its inhabitants. We were the architects for Austin’s first large scale, commercial “green” building – the first Whole Foods Market and Corporate Headquarters at 6th and Lamar. All of our projects are guided by the ethical and far-reaching applications of sustainability. The images in this book demonstrate an abbreviated look at the of some of our more recent endeavors in civic works, in particular, schools and libraries.
ACTON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS The Acton School of Business offers an intensive one-year MBA in Entrepreneurship Program. hatch + ulland owen architects provided complete architectural services for Phase I of the new campus which includes a 10,500 sq. ft. two-story red brick and stone building oriented to maximize views of downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake. The main features of the building are a state-of-the-art classroom which seats 50 students and a 2,000 sq. ft. multipurpose study area. The classroom is the only one of its kind in the country featuring audiovisual equipment that will record and playback all the dynamic interactions between the students and the teachers. The campus also features terraces overlooking the lake and cityscape, a break room, administration offices, a conference room and numerous break-out study areas for the students. The Acton School of Business campus is an excellent example of the merging of contemporary and traditional architecture.

OAK POINT PARK NATURE & RETREAT CENTER Our most recent Civic project, Oak Point Park Nature and Retreat Center, is a new 20,000 square foot visitor and retreat center for a major municipal park in Plano, Texas. The building is located on a rise, overlooking a small lake. The building’s functions include restrooms and vending for park visitors, an interpretive exhibit hall, meeting rooms for Parks and Recreation programs and private functions, and offices for the City’s Parks and Recreation departments. The stone tower of the visitor’s center building is visible from across the 800-acre park. The tower is 45 feet tall, and built of loadbearing sandstone blocks. In the evening, the lantern at the top is illuminated from within, and the tower acts as a beacon, drawing guests to events in the center’s meeting rooms and metaphorically is the heart of the building and the park. The entrance to the center is a row of tapered stone columns, supporting the butterfly roof of the interpretive exhibit hall. Oversized gutters and rain chains demonstrate how the building captures rainwater, which flows into the lake.

TWIN OAKS BRANCH LIBRARY Another noteworthy project is the Twin Oaks Library in South Austin. This modern and sustainably designed 10,000 sf branch library features a dramatic entry vestibule, a large main reading area, separate reading rooms for youth and children, and a community meeting room. A variety of sustainable design strategies are employed throughout the project including a 25.2 kW photovoltaic system that is expected to generate approximately 32,000 kilowatt hours annually (power sufficient for about three standard sized homes), large roof overhangs, a daylight responsive lighting control system, and a rainwater harvesting system. Additionally, bricks salvaged from the old South Austin Post Office building were used in the new building and the use of reclaimed Douglas Fir timbers saved the equivalent of about 30 large trees. The building itself occupies less than half of what used to be the fully paved site of the old post office. In its place, in addition to the new building, is a neighborhood pocket park, amphitheater, inviting landscaping, and rows of shade trees.

HOUSTON GATEWAY ACADEMY Houston Gateway Academy’s Bowie campus is our largest charter school project. This new campus is a 73,000+ square foot, K-12 school designed for the expanding charter school in Houston, Texas. The urban lot for the Bowie Campus forced us to pack a lot of program into a tight space, resulting in two floors of classrooms topped by a roof-top playground. Part of the design challenge was to make sure the “school house” was scaled appropriately to fit into the neighborhood context, with single family residential homes across the street on two sides and across another street from the neighborhood church. This was accomplished by the use of a sloping metal roof at the perimeter and the permanence and character of a brick/masonry facade. The completed building will be seeking LEED Certification.

Tom Hatch, Founding Principal of h+uo, has amassed an extensive and varied background while practicing architecture since 1975 and then establishing the firm in 1978. He has worked on a tremendous variety of projects which include retail projects and offices; public institutional buildings such as schools and libraries; large multi-family developments; rural retreats; and custom private residences.
As a licensed architect since 1994, Erik has a comprehensive background in both commercial and residential architecture and design which includes multi-million dollar office complexes, mixed-use multifamily developments, schools and libraries. Additionally, his extensive experience varies from carefully crafted custom homes to large scale multi-discipline project management, civic and design-build projects.
Randall began his career in architecture in 1993. He specializes in commercial design and development including retail shopping centers and tenant improvements; restaurants; bars; flexible office space and warehouse buildings. He prides himself on being able to take “off-theshelf” and readily available products and use them in innovative ways.
In 2008, Tom was honored with the John V. Nyfeler, FAIA Community Service Award and in 2011, he was elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects. Most recently, in 2013, he received the James D. Pfluger Community Services Award for his work and advocacy of community based and affordable housing designs.

Collaborative teamwork is the foundation of Erik’s project managment skills. He listens to the client and works within the budget as well as inherent environmental and governmental constraints. He believes the best results are realized when the owner and architect work in tandem to develop a project that truly integrates the owner’s objectives, innovative design and environmental responsibility.
