History you can touch. A site overlooking the Maitland River Valley, the Huron Historic Gaol is a National Historic Site and one of the few surviving octagonal designed jails. Since its construction in 1842, it has been witness to the last public execution in Canada and in 1959, it housed Steven Truscott, a boy accused of murder, who was sentenced to hang there. An appeal commuted his sentence to life imprisonment and in 2007, he was proven innocent and released. These are but a few of the fascinating stories awaiting discovery in Goderich. Although John (2 May 1779 – 11 April 1839) lived in Upper Canada for only 3 years, he managed to found the colonial settlements of Guelph and Goderich in 1827 and connect them by road within a couple of years. John later returned to his writing, publishing novels, articles and an autobiography to add to his impressive volume of published poems, plays, histories and political novels. Bringing teachers to the wilds of Ontario. The school car museum is museum and memorial to Clinton native, Fred Sloman, the “Dean of School Car Teachers”, who lived and taught in this converted CNR railcar from 1926 to 1965. The School Car, one of seven, traveled to remote communities in northern Ontario, staying a week in each community before moving on. When the program ended in 1967, the school cars were abandoned in a Toronto rail yard. Eventually this rail car was moved to Sloman Park where, in 1982, a volunteer group refurbished it back to its original purpose. A beachlover’s secret. People travel from afar to Point Farms for the sunsets, the beach and its unique ambience. Accessible through the Point Farms Provincial Park, north of Goderich on Highway 21, Point Farms beach, was once the playground of Victorian tourists, who took the train or traveled by ferry across Lake Huron to stay in the sumptuous resort built on the bluff overlooking the lake. Nature has since reclaimed the resort, transforming the grounds into one of Ontario’s most delightful small provincial parks.
