Fanshawe College opens new site

in Huron County

January / February 2016

Fanshawe College to establish new site and programming in Goderich GODERICH – Fanshawe College is pleased to announce the establishment of a new site in downtown Goderich. Scheduled to open in February 2016, the location at 33 St. David Street in the ‘Kings-

1

ton Block’ will provide Fanshawe the opportunity to offer a selection of post-secondary courses in a prominent setting. Most significantly, Fanshawe will introduce a two-year Business – Entrepreneurship and Management diploma program at the site beginning in September 2016. Students will be able to access Fanshawe Continuing Education programming as well. The Corporation of the Town of Goderich and the Goderich Business Improvement Area (BIA) provided essential support for this project. Fanshawe has committed to collaborating with the Town, the BIA, as well as local businesses and other community stakeholders to promote economic development and offer ongoing training opportunities for young and mature learners alike. Specifically, the Business – Entrepreneurship and Management program will provide students with the knowledge required to launch a small or medium-sized business, or to manage an existing business, by emphasizing courses that focus on management principles, marketing strategies and conducting market research and feasibility studies. A special event will be held in Goderich in the New Year to celebrate the opening of the new site. each for Success is an employability through work experience program, funded by the Federal Government Skills Link Program, to help youth overcome barriers to employment.

Who Is Eligible? Youth can access Reach for Success if they are:  Between 15 and 30 years of age;  Out of school and in need of assistance to gain workplace skills and experience;  Legally entitled to work in Canada.

What Are The Benefits To Youth?  30 hour per week 4 week paid Group Employability Skills workshop series;  24 hour per week 8 week paid job placement with a local employer;  Participants will be paid the equivalent to the Ontario Minimum wage;  Develop life skills, employability skills, job search skills, career decision making abilities and job maintenance skills;  Opportunity to obtain the following certification: First Aid/CPR, Safe Food Handling, WHMIS, Smart Serve. What Are The Benefits To Employers?  Wage reimbursement for 8 weeks, 24 hours per week placement at the minimum wage rate;  Participants apply what they learn in workshops to their work experience.

Emergency Services Training Centre upcoming courses Red Cross Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Two Course Date: January 28 & 29, 2016 and March 8 & 9, 2016. Cost: based on certification required- see below (lunch not included). Dependent on what you need, attendance is listed below: A) CPR only -January 28 or March 8 only 9 am - 3 pm:

$69 + tax B) Emergency First Aid & C CPR- Jan. 28 or Mar. 8 - all day: $99 + tax C) Standard First Aid & C CPR- all day both days: $129 + tax D) HCP CPR (added half hour training to above): $25 + tax This course is a comprehensive two day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. Certification is valid for 3 years. Please note that we will be hosting a Red Cross Standard First Aid & CPR Level C every other month so be sure to check in often for upcoming dates!! Red Cross First Responder - Recertification Two Course Dates: April 2 & 3, 2016 or April 23 & 24, 2016 (Sat & Sun 9:00 am-5:00 pm). In-class Session: 2 days Cost: $250.00 (lunch not included) Does not include textbook, please bring from original certification course and your valid certificate. From emergency professionals such as firefighters and patient transfer, to industry workers in high-risk environments, the First Responders program can provide you with additional skills to save a life when serious injury occurs. their work environment. Management and worker members receive training in the significant hazards found in their workplace. At the end participants will: 1. Understand relevant legislation. 2. Understand their legal rights and responsibilities. 3. Learn about common workplace hazards. 4. Learn key steps to addressing these hazards. This knowledge will prepare participants to carry out workplace inspections, accident investigations and enable them to function effectively as JHSC members. PSHSA Joint Health & Safety - Fire Workplace Hazard Specific - Part 2 Certification Course Date: February 13 & 14, 2016 (Saturday & Sunday - 8:30am 4:30 pm), In-class Session: 2 days Cost: $325.00 (includes lunch) This course is the second part of the training process for individuals to be certified under guidelines established and enforced by the Ontario Ministry of Labour. Emergency Services Training Centre courses continued from page 4 Essentials of Municipal Fire Protection & Emergency Management Course Date: March 1, 2016. Cost: no cost for seminar Lunch $15.00 payable day of seminar. This one day seminar will provide you with a good overall understanding of : the structure of the OFMEM, the principals behind promoting public safety and safer communities, elements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, various municipal requirements, enforcement of offences under the FPPA, municipally-determined fire protection service delivery considerations, fire risk management tools, Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act requirements and emergency management basic principles, programs and resources - with multiple references to legislation, regulations and standards. . PSHSA Traffic Protection for Emergency Services Course Date: March 5th, 2016 (Saturday- 1:00pm- 4:30pm) In-class Session: ½ day session. Cost: $110.00 This program covers the hazards of working close to vehicles and equipment, the legislation that applies and how workers can protect themselves from these hazards. Upon completion of this program the participant will be able to list traffic hazards that may be found in their workplace, describe the legislation related to these hazards and be familiar with the newest edition to Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 Unplanned events. Applicable for the Emergency sector, this training is designed for workers whom are exposed to traffic hazards and work on or near roadways for emergency response purposes. Unplanned events are covered, this course is specifically designed for the Emergency services sector- there is a separate module for municipal sector clients. PSHSA Accident Investigation Course Date: March 5th, 2016 (Saturday- 8:30am- 12:00pm) In-class Session: ½ day session. Cost: $110.00 The purpose of an accident investigation is to prevent the recurrence

of the accident. When performing an investigation, it is essential to look beyond the immediate cause, searching instead for contributing factors and root causes. PSHSA has developed a revised Accident Investigation training program to assist organizations in practicing proper investigations and preventing similar accidents in the future. This workshop teaches participants how to determine causes of accidents as well as the importance of accident investigation. Appropriate for all sectors; this course was designed for supervisors and managers who have little to no experience in managing an accident investigation. The intent of this training session is to provide our clients with an understanding of the purpose of investigations, types of accidents and incidents, the importance of an effective and thorough investigation, potential contributing causes and factors of incidents/ accidents, as well as the ability to make meaningful recommendations for preventative action. A thorough documented investigation process will enhance an organization’s health and safety program and its overall safety performance. SHSA Designated Officer Course Date: March 6, 2016 (Sunday - 8:30am - 4:30pm). In-class Session: 1 day. Cost: $207.50 (includes lunch) Increasingly the threat of contracting a communicable disease is a serious risk for emergency workers. This program is designed for emergency services personnel who wish to become the designated officer within their organization, as required by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. This program will provide participants with information about the legislation and guidelines that apply, and how to recognize, assess and control common communicable diseases in the emergency services.
