FRENCH STUDIES

Whether you are interested in understanding Chinese business culture, exploring traditional Chinese literature or learning about the cultural foundations of modern Japan, Huron offers students a remarkable array of programs and courses in Chinese, Japanese and East Asia Studies.

Humans are, by nature, storytellers. We have been telling each other stories for millenia in order to give meaning to our shared experience of life. English and Cultural Studies is the study of that oral and written attempt to give meaning and examines how we communicate that meaning to others.

French is your passport to establishing business contacts and interacting on the world stage. French is an official language in 29 countries, spoken by 274 million people on five continents and, in case you need even more reasons to study French, it is the third most widely used language on the Web.

Chinese Language and Japanese Language, provide a solid foundation in pronunciation and grammar to achieve proficiency in the four language skills — speaking, listening, reading and writing — and to attain competence during your fourth year necessary for advanced conversation, written composition, and the reading and discussion of authentic texts.

When you study English and Cultural Studies at Huron, your love of story and language becomes a challenging, thought-provoking adventure across centuries and continents to see how literature and language produce and reflect cultural change and difference. Explore the vast body of literature written in English, from Canada and the United States to the British Isles and beyond. Discover the literatures of global indigenous peoples and African Americans or study genres and forms, such as children’s literature and the graphic novel. Understand critical theories and develop your own analytical and writing skills. Conduct original research with the guidance of your professors, or participate in community-based theatre productions.

Fluency in French is within your reach at Huron, with programs and courses that provide an in-depth approach to grammar, conversation and translation. Whether your priority is language, linguistics or literature, at Huron you will be able to customize a program of study that fits your personal aptitudes, interests and career goals. Studying Francophone literature and civilization will expand your worldview, while studying abroad offers exciting opportunities to immerse yourself in la langue et la culture françaises.

East Asia Studies is an interdisciplinary program that engages perspectives from many disciplines, such as history, political science, philosophy and literature, to approach a greater understanding of a region that plays such a vital role in current global affairs. A degree in Chinese, Japanese or East Asia Studies will open the door to a variety of exciting career opportunities, both in Canada and abroad.

A degree in English and Cultural Studies is the jewel in the crown, providing you with the skill that employers want most — the ability to communicate effectively.

English/French bilingualism increases your job opportunities. It is a requirement for many careers in Canada, and knowledge of French makes you eligible for employment outside of Canada where French is spoken.

PHILOSOPHY

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Philosophy challenges you to engage with the greatest minds in human history, enriches your understanding of the world around you and prepares you for virtually any career, because it teaches you to think.

The complex issues challenging our world today require critical thinkers who can see the connections between seemingly unrelated topics. Interdisciplinary Studies at Huron invites you to step across academic boundaries and bring into play multiple perspectives in order to examine and explore topics of special importance and interest. Stretch your mind and expand your horizons. Individuals who are able to synthesize multiple viewpoints are highly sought after in business, politics, media, the arts and engineering. Interdisciplinary programs at Huron when coupled with traditional disciplinary programs encourage new ways of looking at our world.

Philosophy at Huron is a robust program that will encourage you to think clearly and critically, to challenge presuppositions, to reason, to look at issues from different angles and to grapple with complex ideas and principles. In thought-provoking courses you will examine the nature of reality, knowledge, truth, rationality, moral goodness, justice and human nature. You may eventually choose to study the history of philosophy, history and philosophy of science, ethics, logic, feminist philosophy, philosophy of law, philosophy of language, or social and political philosophy. Challenge yourself and make the most of your intellectual potential. Philosophy grads work in many fields, including law, business, politics, medicine, publishing, research and communications.

Stratford Central Secondary School, Stratford, Ontario “ I can’t count the amount of times I’ve been able to go to my professor’s office hour with a question and discuss an essay or a proposal or a text and I always leave feeling really good and just thinking, ‘Wow, I love school! I love learning!’ Being able to have that one-on-one opportunity is undeniably helpful. I will always leave knowing more than when I came in.”
