Alex Ryken

4th year Honors Specialization Psychology & English Language and Literature Minor Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, London, Ontario Growing up in London, Alex Ryken had driven by Huron numerous times, but it wasn’t until Huron came to her high school’s university fair that this Psychology and English student realized the benefits of a strategically small university. In the end, it’s that quality that drew Alex to Huron that keeps her here: small classes. Why is that, exactly? “It’s the professors,” she says. “I have no TAs. My profs here all care about teaching and want to see their students succeed. You get to know them as people.”

Students complete a general first year, choosing courses from a broad selection of arts and social sciences before choosing their major in their second year.

Include a term or full year of study abroad as part of your program at Huron, and you will see the value of inviting and considering multiple perspectives on our world, as well as gaining further study in culture, critical questions over our own global mobilities, and skills in communication.

Careers? Your choice! You may have heard that a Liberal Arts education isn’t really valued in the job market. The fact is that employers actually prefer to hire Liberal Arts grads! Huron alumni regularly tell us that they were hired for their capacity to think critically, communicate clearly and solve complex problems, all transferable skills acquired in their social science courses at Huron. Your Social Sciences degree prepares you for graduate and professional schools, but it also opens doors that you may not have considered: • Public Policy Analyst • Intelligence Analyst • Media Analyst • Human Resources Specialist • Consumer Advocate • International Trade Specialist • Labour Organizer • Lobbyist • Parliamentary Researcher • Social Worker • Psychologist • Counsellor • Consultant
