A Living Laboratory
Inspired by this island, we cultivate the thrill of discovery.
The mission of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is now more imperative than ever. Our science and education initiatives, plus our unique location in the Gulf of Maine hold tremendous potential to prepare current and future scientific leaders to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world. The sophisticated scientific thinking we need begins with the opportunity to make simple and inspired observations.
We need that hands-on experience for students, where they are looking at the moon and talking about it rather than just sitting in a classroom or looking at photos of it in a book. “
One of the staff members came running into the building and asked us if we had been outside to see the moon that night.
I gathered all the kids… we talked about the king tide and what it is and how it works.
To carry out this vision, we are excited to have expanded our team to include Dr. Anya Hopple as our Science and Research Director and Will Galloway as our Education and Programs Director. Both of these leaders bring a wealth of experience and perspective for our research and education programs to chart a path for expanded climate related research and to integrate that work into our teacher professional development and youth programs.
“
Victoria’s experience illustrates how our work inspires students and scientists to study the Gulf of Maine in this critical moment for its ecosystems. Over the next few years we will be expanding our capacity to engage in impactful scientific research and education initiatives through the opening of our new Field Research Station, soon to be a vibrant laboratory for marine research in the heart of Penobscot Bay.
- UMaine Presque Isle Junior Victoria Raeihle &
Interacting with our local communities is an utmost priority as we work to increase environmental literacy. Through community workshops funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, we’ve facilitated Listening Sessions with Maine’s scientific research community and local residents in Rockland and Vinalhaven. These conversations have highlighted the challenges facing Penobscot Bay and amplified the ways in which we can best support our neighbors.
As we move into the new year, we are guided by a visionary staff, a strong mission, a committed Board of Directors and a sense of connection to the communities we serve. We hope you enjoy reading about our progress in 2023 and where we are headed in 2024.

EDUCATION
Addressing Environmental Issues in a Rapidly Changing World
In 2023, Hurricane Island’s Education Programs reached a record number of students across Maine and beyond through place-based science programs in schools around Penobscot Bay and hands-on marine research initiatives on Hurricane Island. We strengthened our partnerships with local schools and expanded our reach to offer hands-on science learning experiences to more youth across the state and climate-focused teacher training to regional educators.
“These experiences have the potential to change the lives of students and to broaden their minds as to what careers and passions are available to them and what those look like in their authentic environments.”
Thanks to the vision and support of Dr. Lee Thibideau, we were able to launch a collaboration in Aroostook County which brought students and teachers from the Presque Isle High School and preservice teachers from the University of Maine Presque Isle to engage in hands-on field work with our educators and researchers on Hurricane Island.
“I view the world with more emotion now as every single aspect is entirely connected.”
- Student , Northeast HS, PA
- Dr. Sarah Bushey, UMaine Presque Isle Extended Opportunities CoordinatorHurricane Island was honored to be the recipient of funding from the Maine Department of Education’s Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative for the second year in a row. This initiative has allowed Hurricane Island to bring Maine students from coastally under-resourced communities to experience the joy of discovery on our island campus.

THE POWER OF POSSIBILITY Inspiring Global Sustainability Leaders
Rosamund Stone Zander
Roz Zander and her husband spent a beautiful morning with us on Hurricane Island just days before her sudden passing on September 5, 2023. During their visit, Roz celebrated the success of our on-going partnership with United People Global (UPG), a collaboration she forged with visionary leadership and funded through her philanthropic foundation, J.P. Fletcher Foundation.
Hurricane Island’s partnership with UPG, now in its sixth year, carries out Roz’s belief that small actions born from individual experiences and fueled by collective engagement can lead to lasting global environmental and social solutions. For hundreds of young global leaders, Hurricane Island is the hub of their international network and inspires their commitment to achieving bold visions in a rapidly changing world.
In 2023, we led trainings for 91 young sustainability leaders on Hurricane Island. Their projects ranged in scope from addressing arranged child marriages to creating digital platforms promoting art and ocean conservation.
Countries represented by our 2023 cohort of leaders:
Two UPG alum, Rosa Aganda and Babi Amaral joined our 2023 seasonal staff as interns.
“Every problem, every dilemma, every dead end we find ourselves facing in life, only appears unsolvable inside a particular frame or point of view. Enlarge the box, or create another frame around the data, and problems vanish, while new opportunities appear.”
Program Growth 2012 - 2023
INNOVATIVE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
Madison Maier, our Aquaculture Manager and Education Specialist, plays a crucial role in building bridges between science and community, fostering relationships between fishermen and farmers, and providing authentic educational experiences for students.
A key example of our community-engaged research is our recent collaborative project, led by the Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, which focuses on understanding the dynamics of sea scallop larval supply along Maine’s coast. In partnership with scallop growers and fishermen, we embarked on a state-wide effort to map the variability of larval supply from offshore to inshore waters (Fig 1a)
One of our preliminary findings from the scallop larval supply project indicates an increase in larval supply with increasing distance from shore and depth (Fig 1b). This insight is crucial for the scallop industry, as it can inform strategies for seed procurement and ultimately contribute to the sustainability and growth of both wild and cultured scallop populations.
Leading our contributions to this and other research initiatives is our new Science and Research Director, Dr. Anya Hopple. With her expertise in ecosystem ecology and conservation, Dr. Hopple is guiding our team to new heights, ensuring our research remains relevant and impactful.
2023 summer intern, Olivia Trahan, won first prize at The Coastal Society’s forum in North Carolina for her poster illustrating the research she conducted on Ascidians (sea squirts) while working with us.

HURRICANE ISLAND FIELD RESEARCH STATION
Ribbon Cutting
On August 5th, we welcomed over 100 special guests to Hurricane Island to celebrate the Ribbon Cutting for the Hurricane Island Field Research Station and heard inspiring remarks from speakers including Governor Janet Mills, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, OPAL Architect Matt O’Malia, and renowned scientists Rick Wahle and Bob Stenneck. The occasion also offered the opportune moment to introduce the Maine science community to our new Research Director Dr. Anya Hopple.
“You could learn 100 years worth of stuff in a week on Hurricane Island, and I think that’s true whether you’re 12 or 82.”
“It is my hope that this station will serve as a living laboratory nurturing young minds and inspiring seasoned researchers to address the most pressing challenges of our community and the region.”
-
“For all of us who live on these neighboring islands, Hurricane Island is such an important and essential part of our lives. This is not just a place for science, but also education.”
- U.S. Representative Chellie

As part of a planning grant from the National Science Foundation, Hurricane Island hosted a series of community workshops to solicit feedback on our research priorities at the new Field Research Station. We convened the first session on the island with scientists following the ribbon cutting ceremony. In the fall, community members met in Rockland at the Steel House for a lively roundtable discussion, and in early winter, the Vinalhaven fishing community gathered at the Sand Bar restaurant to provide input to our research team. We engaged in important and inspiring conversations with our community at all three events, and received valuable feedback that will inform our research work.

WORKSHOPS
Aquaculture Workshops
With support from SeaMaine’s Seafood Economic Accelerator, Hurricane Island hosted 10 workshops in 2023 that were free and open to the public. Serving over 90 participants, five of these workshops provided an introduction to the practice of sustainable aquaculture, while the other five focused on providing specific skill-building experiences for those working in the field.
“This workshop gave me more insight into fishery dependent communitites that I do not often see, and gave me glimpses of career paths for myself.”
- 4H Program Participant
UNH Sustainability Fellow
Through a partnership with the University of New Hampshire’s Sustainability Fellowship Program, we were able to bring the brilliant Arielle Kotulak to help us audit and upgrade our Sustainability Systems. Arielle’s position was generously supported by Tom’s of Maine, and in her work she researched, identified, and applied for a grant from the Small Islands Organization (SMILO). We were delighted to receive funds from SMILO to upgrade the solar array of our island water pump house and are excited to build this new partnership and continue making our island systems more sustainable.
CELEBRATING COMMUNITY
Volunteer Days
Each April and October we greet a hardy crew of volunteers who help sustain our island campus. Thank you!
First National Bank Visit
Thanks to support from the First National Bank, we’ve been able to expand our in-school hands-on science education presence over the past four years.
North Haven Education Panel
In celebration of a fantastic year-long partnership with the North Haven School, Hurricane Island hosted a panel focused on place-based education at the Waterman’s Community Center. The panel featured speakers including leaders in the field of place-based education, representatives from the Maine DOE, and students and teachers from the North Haven School. The event was attended by Governor Mills, Congresswoman Pingree, and many members of the community.
Farm to Table & Gardens to Glass
Our August and September dinner events celebrated local food, our integrated education and research work, and the amazing island staff who welcome guests to enjoy Hurricane Island’s beauty and wonder. In addition to hosting island events, we celebrated with supporters in Boston MA, Jamestown RI, and Camden, ME — thanks to the hospitality of Chris and Laura Carrigan, Andrew Bendheim and the Cabot Wellington Family Office; Alec and Linda Knowles and the Conanicut Yacht Club; and Barrens Distillery.
Celebrating Peter O. Willauer’s 90th year and 60th anniversary of running his first program on Hurricane Island
Please join us in honoring POW’s living legacy of creating experiential education on Hurricane Island by directing a gift to the Peter O. Willauer Fund for Hurricane’s Future.
Through a leadership gift from the E & L Campbell Family Foundation, we were able to establish a Board Directed Fund honoring the enduring vision and legacy of Peter O. Willauer. The Peter O. Willauer Fund for Hurricane Island’s Future will provide funding for unanticipated and otherwise unbudgeted island infrastructure and maintenance needs for operating programs on Hurricane Island and will be managed in perpetuity according to the organization’s - Susan St. John
Gift Acceptance and Investment and Expenditure Policies.
“I have been thinking of how POWerful the POW Fund will be. I certainly plan to make a gift towards this POW Fund in 2024, in addition to my Unrestricted Annual Gifts!”
The Hurricane Island Community Remembers Rafe Parker
Serving as program director in the early days of Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS), Rafe taught by example, winning the hearts of many. Rafe went on to start the Southwest Outward Bound School then led SEA Education Association. His wife, Kate, their children, and an extended sea of family and friends returned to Hurricane Island on October 13, 2023 to place a stone in his memory on the Waypoint Ledge overlooking the island and sound.
OUR MISSION
We integrate scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world.
2023 Year-Round and Seasonal Staff
None of our work would exist without our inspiring, competent, ambitious staff. Thank you!
