A message from AFL New Zealand As each year passes, new opportunities are continually presented to the New Zealand AFL community to engage and establish an affinity with the sport that originates in Australia but is now more than just Australia’s game. April 2013 was an historic occasion when the first AFL fixture in 140 years was played outside of Australia in Wellington. This has inspired participation numbers to grow with 25,000 New Zealanders now playing AFL each year. AFL New Zealand welcomes the AFL Academy, the Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers U16 Boys and Youth Girls and NSW Independent Schools, as they compete in their respective clashes against the Senior, AFLNZ Academy Level 1 & 2 and the NZ Kahu Youth Girls. The Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers visit will see participants from the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League compete against the AFL New Zealand Academy Level 2 team for the first time. The Mornington Peninsula BlueScope Steelers Youth Girls also travel to New Zealand for the first time and will take on the NZ Kahu Youth Girls. The support provided by MPJFL President Andrew Souter has been open minded and welcoming. No fewer than 15 clubs from the League are represented in the two match series whilst the Level 2 Academy showcases 17 different Secondary Schools from eight regions throughout New Zealand. The NSW Independent Schools are travelling to New Zealand for the second time after a successful tour in April 2016 and will take on the Academy Level 1 side in a two match series. On the 24th of April at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, the NAB AFL Academy and their opponents the New Zealand Hawks, showcase what the future could be. This represents the Academy’s sixth visit to New Zealand. An amazing percentage of members from the past five sides have now progressed to AFL and professional ranks and so once again we welcome to our shores, stars of the future. The New Zealand team continue to grow the awareness of the sport and showcase the desire to represent their country. Following on from other successful Trans Tasman sporting competitions, they look to place their stamp on the future. The visiting teams provide a significant opportunity to assist in the development of young athletes within New Zealand as they look to find their way in a new and mysterious sport. AFL New Zealand’s association with the Australian Leagues and organisations continues to grow with 7 current New Zealand Senior players playing and testing their skills within Australia. We look forward to the day when Australian players cross the ditch to be involved in the AFL New Zealand Premiership. Let’s enjoy another great weekend of football and welcome all involved to Aotearoa. Robert Vanstam, CEO AFLNZ

NAB AFL Academy The NAB AFL Academy commenced in 1997 and provides the best young talent in the country a NAB AFL Academy scholarship, as an opportunity to improve their football and personal skills in an accelerated AFL programme in their development years. This group therefore is the 20th Intake into the NAB AFL Academy which has contributed some much to the growth and development of so many of our AFL champions and rising AFL stars of today. The Level One squad of 28 players is selected following the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, and the Level Two Squad includes the best 36 Under-18 players in the country; these players are eligible for the upcoming NAB AFL Draft. Both squads are under the guidance of Head Coach Luke Power along with Assistant Coaches including Glen Jakovich, Brent Harvey and Mark Williams at level one and Brad Johnson, Nick Dal Santo and Peter Sumich at level two. In 2017, there are 229 graduates of the NAB AFL Academy on AFL lists, including 9 of the current Captains including the likes of Joel Selwood at Geelong, Trent Cotchin at Richmond and Travis Boak at Port Adelaide. This is a wonderful opportunity for Australian Football to display its talented youth in the international arena against a region that is growing in both its development and the way in which it has taken to the AFL code, displaying great promise for the years ahead. It also provides players from both Nations with the rare opportunity to wear their countries colours in their chosen sport of AFL – something they will treasure and reflect upon in the years to come with their overall careers. The AFL would like to thank NAB for its outstanding support of the entire “NAB AFL Rising Stars Programme” which includes the NAB AFL Academy. This is the 6th occasion the NAB AFL Academy will come together to play the New Zealand Hawks. Both countries have a very proud and honourable history through the ANZAC spirit – may this spirit live on through life and football for many years to come. Lest We Forget

Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League We would like to thank AFL New Zealand for this amazing opportunity to come to Wellington with our U16 and Youth Girls representative teams to play 2 matches against the respective New Zealand representative teams. It is always an honour and a privilege to play representative sport at any level. However to play an international representative match is an opportunity that most will never experience. How fitting that the games will be played over the ANZAC weekend, where the tradition of our two great countries joined forces to become allies and form the world renowned ANZAC’s. This weekend we will also be commemorating the ultimate sacrifices our ancestors went through on the first day of landing on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915. The game of AFL is a truly unique sport that was originally formed in 1858 in Victoria Australia, primarily as something for the cricketers to do during the cold winter months. As all participants and spectators have witnessed it is an amazing sport with so many entertaining and thrill factors throughout the game – you really never know what will happen next. The four matches over the weekend between the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League “Bluescope Steelers” & AFL New Zealand representative teams will not entail the same sacrifices of our ANZAC’s, however I am sure the matches will showcase the same fighting spirit and camaraderie. We may be rivals on the field but we are really looking forward to being allies off it. Our players and officials are excited to the adventure that is ahead of us in New Zealand and in particular to interact and embrace the culture we experience. The indigenous Maori culture is very intriguing to us and of course the Haka is world renowned and respected by everyone. What a great way to be educated in a new cultural experience by travelling, learning and playing the game that both countries are so passionate about - AFL or as we call it Australian Rules Football.

This year is the first year that the stand alone Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League representative teams travel to New Zealand to play football and we are all extremely keen to ensure that this exciting venture is the start of many more to come. We would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to CEO Rob Vanstam and all of the AFL New Zealand members for inviting us to participate and the unbelievable work carried out to ensure that these tours take place. I would also like to thank the players & parents from both the AFLNZ & MPJFL teams for embracing this venture and investing in the future of not only all of these players but the future of our sport. We would like to thank the following companies that have contributed in assisting our players to take this journey: • Bluescope • Sherwood Sportswear • Natural Sportswear • Flight Centre We would also like to wish all the players the best of luck, enjoy the games but most of all embrace the experience. The executive of the MPJFL are excited and look forward to the games played in both the ANZAC spirit and passion. Andrew Souter President Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League BLUESCOPE STEELERS

New Zealand Kahu Youth Girls With increasing pathway opportunities growing throughout AFL New Zealand Secondary School Programmes, the team has several new athletes. Some with as little as four months involvement along side more experienced campaigners now in their third and fourth seasons in the game. The Kahu Coaching staff lead by Mitch Ryan will look to blend new and exciting talent with players with previous experience to help guide their new teammates through the campaign. They will look to share their knowledge and assist the new players both on and off the field. The development of the inaugural AFL Women competition in Australia has thrown fresh eyes on sport for women and also added to opportunities afforded to New Zealand participants. The involvement of Kahu, Jolyn Collins in the Under 18 AFLW Championships in Melbourne 2016, is the first step towards New Zealanders playing in Australia’s premier competition for women. As part of the female development pathway, participation in the AFL New Zealand Youth Competition is now based at Auckland’s Harbour Stadium, with intentions to commence at Hutt Park in Wellington. This has provided an opportunity to develop much needed playing time and experience with their new sport in the lead up to the campaign and preparing them for the series ahead. This is the first time the Mornington Peninsula Youth Girls have toured New Zealand. We welcome them to our shores in what we hope is the first visit of many. The New Zealand Kahu Players have come through a variety of school programmes delivered in Secondary schools targeting female participation and the incentives for taking on a new sport are rewarded by potential national representation opportunities. AFL New Zealand has received considerable support through Regional Sports Trusts and KiwiSport initiatives and we are thankful for their support.

AFL New Zealand Academy The AFL New Zealand Academy has been created to provide a pathway for athletes to excel through AFL. Â The AFL New Zealand Academy will improve the skills and fitness of athletes, through a training and development programme. The Academy consists of two levels: Level 1: for Athletes that are new entrants to Academy and New Zealand representative pathway Level 2: for Athletes continuing their Academy and New Zealand representative pathway with their next step U18 New Zealand Hawks or Senior New Zealand Hawks. Eligibility for each level is also age related changing each year, based on the year you were born. Eligibility for this year can be found at aflnz.co.nz Academy Athletes are selected from the AFL New Zealand Youth Boys Competition in March of each year with each level containing up to 30 athletes. New Zealand Hawks Academy teams play touring Australian teams, April each year, with final selection of the New Zealand Hawks Academy teams being reduced to 24 athletes at the start of April each year. With limitations on programmes delivered in the South Island, talented players identified in the regions of Christchurch and Otago will be provided with a development staff and programme in place of the Youth Boys competition. The opportunity then exists for a fast track entry into the AFL New Zealand Academy as a wild card entrant. Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development. Further opportunities arising from the AFL New Zealand Academy include, selection into New Zealand Hawks Academy teams, AFL New Zealand National Combine selection, access to talent scouts and AFL International Scholarships.
