The demise of the traditional auction house has failed to materialise
One auction house that can rival Bonhams for the sheer variety of lots on offer would have to be Sotheby’s (sothebys.com), as a glimpse at the programme for their upcoming events reveals something for all tastes. May 23rd sees them host a sale of Medieval Manuscripts and Continental Books, June th sees them offer 19th Century European Paintings, before June 7th reverts to more familiar ground with their Fine Jewels sale. Those looking to spruce up their home should visit Christie’s (christies.com) who have an Interiors Sale on May 24th; if you need a piece of jewellery then you will want to head to Fellows’ ( fellows.co.uk) Jewellery Sale on June 8th, and Asian Art lovers should visit Roseberys (roseberys.co.uk) on June 27th.
This May, Clarendon’s flagship Mayfair gallery hosts an exhibition of paintings by the British artist, Jeff rey Pratt. 0207 499 0947 clarendonfineart.com

The Maquette of Bomber Command Memorial (Green Park, London)

All of which makes Philip Jackson’s Bomber Command a very special investment indeed. A limited edition of twenty, 17-inch maquettes of the national monument is now on sale at the Catto Gallery.

For those looking to see what the future may hold, then a visit to the Science Museum (sciencemuseum.org.uk), is always a delight, and for those who have an interest in robotics their latest exhibition, Robots, is a mustsee. The exhibition looks at over 500 years of robotics, from a 1 th century mechanical monk to one of the fi rst walking bipedal robots. irector of the Science Museum Group, Ian Blatchford, says: “This exhibition explores the uniquely human obsession of recreating ourselves, not through paint or marble but in metal. Seeing robots through the eyes of those who built them reveals much about humanity’s hopes, fears and dreams.”
It feels like a tumultuous time for the world at present and someone at the Imperial War Museum iwm.org.uk) clearly has their fi nger on the pulse since their latest exhibition, People Power: Fighting for Peace, looks at the history of protest in the 20th century. They have managed to gather a unique collection of over 300 items, spanning the First and Second World Wars, the nuclear disarmament campaigns of the Cold War and the street protests that dogged the Tony Blair government during the Iraq War, including the famous ‘Bliar’ posters. A fascinating exhibition proving that sometimes demanding your right to be heard can make a difference.
Princess iana was known throughout the world for her charity work and her devotion to helping those less fortunate than her, yet an undeniable part of her appeal was wrapped up in what she was wearing; often the inescapable fate of any female public figure.
It is this aspect of her personality which the istoric Royal Palaces hrp.org.uk) latest exhibition places under the microscope. athering a series of outfits from iana’s life, from those early tentative public appearances to the bolder, more glamorous outfits that characterised her later life – fashion-lovers and fans will be in their element with this incredible exhibition.
Finally, for all of you who have budding wizards in your ranks, then put October 20th in the diary, as this is when the British Library (bl.uk) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with their exhibition, arry Potter: A istory of Magic. Gathering original drafts and drawings from
The Second World War, as seen through the Battle of the Bulge, is brought to life thanks to three immersive ‘stage visions’. bastognewarmuseum.be

City of Culture
2017 is a special year in that it sees the return of the UK’s City of Culture designation. esigned to build upon the success of Liverpool winning the European Capital of Culture Award in 2008, the inaugural City of Culture award went to Londonderry in 2013, and in 2017 the honour has fallen upon ull. Sited unfashionably at the end of the M 2, ull may not be the fi rst city to spring to mind when one thinks of culture, but the city has gone to great strides to build its image in the past decade and is pulling out the stops to ensure its time as City of Culture is beneficial.
A large bulk of the awarded money has gone into renovating the city’s Ferens Art Gallery (hullcc.gov.uk/Ferens), which will be the host of the 2017 Turner Prize and will exhibit the four shortlisted artists work to the public, free of charge. But it’s not just the Turner Prize to look forward to as Ferens Art allery also hosts a wide range of paintings from artists such as Lorenzetti, Rembrandt and, local artist, avid ockney. If you prefer your art a little closer to the knuckle, however, the recently-opened Humber Street Gallery (humberstreetgallery.co.uk) is a contemporary art space dedicated to showcasing the latest artists and their boundary-pushing, often provocative work.
There is more going on in ull in 2017 than its art shows, indeed if you are a music-lover then there are numerous music festivals coming to ull in 2017 to suit all tastes. The city draws upon its proud maritime history to stage a Folk & Maritime Festival in July and, in the same month, the city hosts the Hull Jazz Festival where the freshest names in UK jazz perform alongside internationally-recognised artists. The true highlight of the city’s festivals is the Humber Street Sesh (humberstreetsesh.co.uk). Held in August, this award-winning grassroots festival takes over the city’s marina and exclusively hosts local musicians, which draws crowds of 30,000 people.
Hull is the only city in the UK to have white telephone boxes
The city’s first children’s literature festival, The Big Malarkey Festival, takes place at the end of June in anticipation of the Children’s Laureate winner being announced. Hull Truck Theatre continues to host productions from across the UK while promoting the work of local playwrights. With all this, and so much more besides, Hull is proving to be an attractive cultural destination in 2017. So why not journey up the M1 and see what all the fuss is about?
