Thanks to shows like Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow, we have become a nation of antique connoisseurs who enjoy nothing more than rummaging through a box of belongings in the hope of finding some hidden treasure. Whether for profit or pleasure, a trip to an antiques fair is an enjoyable way

to spend the day, especially as we approach the summer months.

The Arts & Antiques Fair Olympia (olympia-art-antiques.com), is one of the longest-running antiques fairs in the UK and in 2017 enters an unprecedented 45th year. Taking over the Olympia Centre in London for seven days between June 26th – July

2nd, there will be 160 dealers showcasing a wide variety of antiques from the relatively affordable to exquisite items worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. Fair director, Mary Claire Boyd, said: “The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia features many dealers not seen at any other British fair. With the launch of eBay many predicted we would see the end of in-house auctions completely, as the industry moved to the online sphere. However, while eBay was undoubtedly the fi rst stepping stone to revolutionising the way we engage with auctions in our day-to-day lives, the demise of the traditional auction house has failed to materialise and the tactile pleasure of viewing auction lots is something one can still indulge in. One upcoming auction, which is set to cause a stir, comes from one of the largest auction houses in the world, Bonhams ( bonhams.com), who are gearing up for their Russian Sale on June 7th at New Bond Street, London.

The highlight comes from the highly-regarded Russian artist, mitri Stelletsky, and his influential oil painting, Fox Hunt. aria Chernenko, Bonhams’ head of Russian Art, said: “We are delighted to offer five works by mitri Stelletsky, who contributed significantly to the understanding of modern Russian Art at a time when very little was known about it.”

City of Culture

2017 is a special year in that it sees the return of the UK’s City of Culture designation. esigned to build upon the success of Liverpool winning the European Capital of Culture Award in 2008, the inaugural City of Culture award went to Londonderry in 2013, and in 2017 the honour has fallen upon ull. Sited unfashionably at the end of the M 2, ull may not be the fi rst city to spring to mind when one thinks of culture, but the city has gone to great strides to build its image in the past decade and is pulling out the stops to ensure its time as City of Culture is beneficial.

A large bulk of the awarded money has gone into renovating the city’s Ferens Art Gallery (hullcc.gov.uk/Ferens), which will be the host

of the 2017 Turner Prize and will exhibit the four shortlisted artists work to the public, free of charge. But it’s not just the Turner Prize to look forward to as Ferens Art allery also hosts a wide range of paintings from artists such as Lorenzetti, Rembrandt and, local artist, avid ockney. If you prefer your art a little closer to the knuckle, however, the recently-opened Humber Street Gallery (humberstreetgallery.co.uk) is a contemporary art space dedicated to showcasing the latest artists and their boundary-pushing, often provocative work.

There is more going on in ull in 2017 than its art shows, indeed if you are a music-lover then there are numerous music festivals

coming to ull in 2017 to suit all tastes. The city draws upon its proud maritime history to stage a Folk & Maritime Festival in July and, in the same month, the city hosts the Hull Jazz Festival where the freshest names in UK jazz perform alongside internationally-recognised artists. Thus, it is no surprise many of us seek to buy, maintain or renovate a period home and, as with all forms of property wrangling, this can come with numerous pros and cons.

Save Original Features Wherever Possible

I know from personal experience that builders will encourage you to remove period ceilings, Victorian cornices – roses and all – because it’s easier for them to start from scratch. This is not always necessary though and certainly not always cost effective. et an expert to check the ceilings are stable. If not, there are ways of pinning them so as not to lose the features that give the property its ‘wow’ factor. If the walls are lathe and plaster, I’m afraid these are likely to need replacing at some point so it’s worth doing at the start –

Beware The Cost Of Windows

Don’t Play With Fireplaces

Who doesn’t love a fi replace? Unfortunately, if it’s a period property the chimney is likely to need lining. Not checking this out could put you in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, so don’t take it lightly. Also be aware that if any work is carried out you will be expected to abide by building regulations to fit vents in the room.

Don’t Skimp On Electrics

And Plumbing

Replacing electrics and plumbing is a costly exercise. Replacing electrics and plumbing when you’ve already decorated and carpeted a property is soul destroying. If you’re buying a period property don’t think this is something you can save on unless you have certificates to prove it has been recently done. You need the right kind of boiler, modern radiators and decent water pressure and

“The number of marriages has been rising since 2013, partly thanks to a growth in couples in their late 50s and 60s getting hitched for a second or third time. This growth in second marriages has contributed to the boom in secondhand and antique rings, which can be half the price of new pieces.”

But what kind of antique jewellery is in vogue at the moment? While these things are ultimately a matter of taste, auction houses like Barnebys are well placed to see what people are spending their money on.

“Natural pearls are having a renaissance. Since the arrival of cultured pearls in the 1920s, the price of natural pearls has dropped,” explains Mr Silfverstolpe. “However, in the last 20 years the price of natural pearls has begun to rise again.”

If you are looking to purchase an antique gem as an investment rather than an accessory then it is worth leaning towards the old, consistent favourites.

“Original and unique art deco pieces are currently very desirable and can command high prices. Edwardian jewellery is popular whereas Victorian pieces are currently less fashionable, rose gold is once again coming back into fashion though and, of course, signed pieces by recognised designers are always sought after,” says Mr Smith.

“Diamonds are usually going to be more valuable than most other gems, but some top-quality rubies and emeralds can still command high prices.”

The world of antique and vintage toys holds a perennial popularity for investors and collectors

Toys have the ability to transport you in time and space back to your childhood and almost everyone can remember their favourites. It is this nostalgia, when combined with recent trends in the film and television world, which means vintage (and not so vintage) toys can be rather lucrative.

The interest in timepieces is fuelled by their investment appeal and enduring charm

Horology is the study of time and has been at the forefront of human endeavour ever since man began to question his place in the world. From clocks to watches, sundials, hourglasses, chronometers and atomic clocks, we have been eternally charmed with creating instruments with which to record time’s passing.

And, while ornate mechanical clocks have long held a fascination, it is the smaller, more practical (and fashionable), wristwatches that have really cemented a place in our hearts – a trend which is looking set to continue, both in terms of watches as collector’s pieces and as investments.

Nino Santi is general manager of Watches and Jewellery of Bond St. (watchcentre.com), and as such sees some exceptionally rare pieces,

“The market for rare and vintage watches is very strong, especially as many people are looking for alternative investments,” says Santi. “In terms of pre-owned watches and vintage watches, the strong brands are predominantly Rolex and Patek Philippe. These types of watches are getting harder and harder to find, and so their value will continue to increase.”

Richard Lewis, chief operating o cer for auctioneers TheSaleRoom.com, says: “One really strong area is gentlemen’s mechanical watches – particularly the so-called ‘tool’ watches – those made for the army or pilots and divers. They have come to epitomise the alpha male and as such are considered the

Nino Santi continues: “Patek Philippe has always been a world leader. But, if people perhaps don’t have the fi nance to pay for these big names then you have brands such as Omega, which can still yield good returns, and have produced some beautiful watches which are very collectible.”

Brexit and Trump characterised 201 and 2017 is turning into a world of post-truth and fake news. Both create uncertainty as people speculate on what is real: in politics, media, and business. Classic cars and the world of automobilia are going from strength to strength

With well over half a million classic cars on the road in the United Kingdom, classic motoring is an enduring passion that inspires many of us, and for a number of reasons.

David Barzilay is chairman of Classic Motor Cars Ltd. (classic-motor-cars.co.uk), and says: “Most people have fond memories of certain cars, especially the ones their family members owned. For example, the Jaguar Mk2 that uncle Harry had was also the car of choice for both villains and the police, so it had an edgy appeal!”

“The growing interest in classic cars exists for a number of reasons but much of it is about

nostalgia and happy memories, they are the vehicles that took us on holiday or the ones that we drove when we fi rst started work.”

And, with their perenial popularity, classic cars are also proving to be a strong performer in these days of low investment returns.

Will Smith, of Silverstone Auctions ( silverstoneauctions.com), says of the continuing performance of this market:

“Over the past five years an index tracking the performance of 50 rare classic cars rose by 142%. Although Porsche, Jaguar and Ferrari prices seemed to be levelling off, the more affordable 70s to 90s classics perform well.”

At the more classic end is James Guess, director at Feathers Lifestyle ( featherslifestyle.co.uk), a classic car and motorsports experience company. He says:

“There is increasing interest in the scene and I believe this stems from classic cars having that ‘boyhood’ appeal. The owners now were the young boys dreaming of these cars in their youth. Modern cars just don’t have the uniqueness; classic cars are all so beautiful, each with their own character. In

addition, events such as Goodwood Revival and the Silverstone Classic, where you can see these cars race to their limits, will show you how good these cars really are.”

This growth of grassroots interest and appeal seems to be matched by the classic car market as a whole and the higher end of the market (£1m +) remains extremely buoyant. But, hardnosed investors aside, when it comes to the upper-end of the classic car market, enthusiasts of all types are now wanting more from their classic car ownership experience and are heading to the tracks in record numbers.

“There has been a massive increase in amateur motorsports in the last decade,” says Guess. “Classic car owners now realise they can buy their dream

car, get a race licence, and then actually go out at the weekend and race. There is no limit to what the amateur can achieve, with many even looking to race the Le Mans 24 Hours. However, only a few make it – you need a great deal of talent and a very large cheque book!”

And, if you do have a classic car or have recently bought one, now is the time to get it ready to be driven and enjoyed during the spring and summer seasons, says Barzilay: “ on’t forget to consider basics such as checking the fluid levels, tyre pressure and looking under the bonnet. Whether you do it yourself, or trust your local garage or restorer, will be a matter for you, but make sure you get the most out of the driving season.”

Not too far from the bright lights of the race circuit were the race tuned’ performance cars of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s – vehicles that

offered a racing look-and-feel to the man on the street. As young men from this era come of age, the demand for these contemporary classics has grown exponentially.

“Cars like the BMW E30 M3, Ford Sierra RS500 and Mercedes 190 Evolution models are in huge demand,” says Smith. “We’ve seen a surge in interest in these models, as buyers wake up to their performance, homologated provenance and fashionable 1980s looks.”

Barzilay agrees: “As each year goes by new classics emerge based on different criteria: how old they are, what they are worth, historical interest or whether they are worth preserving rather than scrapping. Some will be more popular than others, and that is when the value really starts to climb.”

So, from safe investment to fun nostalgia, what is it that drives our obsession with cars?

“It’s really a boy thing isn’t it?” says uess. “Ever since the invention of the motorcar man has challenged himself to go faster and further than before. This has created amazing machines and drivers and, whether you play with cars for a hobby or to make a living, cars are simply irresistible!”
