1. America After The Fall

Royal Academy of Arts

The immediate aftermath of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 was a turbulent time for America. However, as is the way of human nature, with great hardship comes great creativity, and this is the focus of the Royal Academy’s collection a showcase of the artists of the 1930s who captured the mood of the nation.

Presenting pieces from renowned artists such as eorgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and Charles Sheeler, there is also the opportunity to witness the iconic Grant Wood painting, American Gothic, for the fi rst time outside of America. royalacademy.org.uk

2. The Japanese House: Architecture and Life after 1945 – Barbican Centre

This spring, London’s famous Barbican Centre will be hosting an exhibition about the development of Japanese architecture after the Second World War and its impact on the western world.

Featuring the work of over 40 architects, its most impressive achievement is the 1:1 recreation of the famous Moriyama ouse by the Pritzker-prize winning architect, Ryue Nishizawa – considered one of the most important houses of the 21st century.

Jane Alison, head of visual arts at the Barbican says: “With this exhibition we have achieved a new level of ambition. We invite the visitor to not just consider Japanese architecture, but to experience it.” barbican.org.uk/artgallery

Not to be outdone by The Rolling Stones and their recent collaboration with the Saatchi allery, one of Britain’s most influential bands, Pink Floyd, are being celebrated with an exhibition of their timeless works. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of their fi rst single, the &A have pulled together a comprehensive compilation of the band’s most important artefacts and are displaying them for the public to view.

So, expect to see set reconstructions from their iconic live shows, original cover artwork designs, handwritten lyrics and, of course, their famous psychedelic posters. In addition to this, Pink Floyd fans can experience never-before-seen concert footage and a custom-designed laser light show. Simon is considered one of Britain’s finest contemporary sculptors and his work takes inspiration from nature and its impact on the world around us. “Most sculptures don’t start out as a conscious thought, with all the aspects of form and meaning carefully considered,” explains Mr udgeon. “What happens is that an idea enters my head be it a shape, a movement or an emotion and I simply want to convey it. I must convey it!”
