JEFFREY PRATT
For 78 year old artist Je rey Pra , painting ‘en plein air’ - out on location - is the quintessential element to his creative process allowing him to get to the heart of the scene in a way that he feels would be impossible in a studio. His new series of paintings will be unveiled at Clarendon Fine Art in London’s Mayfair.
11 - 20 May | Private view: 11 May from 6:00-8:00pm
Clarendon Fine Art is delighted to announce an exciting exhibition of available paintings by the distinguished British artist Jeffrey Pratt. Reminiscent of the early impressionists, Jeffrey Pratt works directly in the landscape, painting the interpretation of his own experience which guarantees immediacy, authenticity and integrity. This major exhibition featuring French and British landscapes will be the defining presentation of Jeffrey Pratt’s career thus far and is much anticipated by existing collectors in the UK and abroad. Prices range from £3,000 to £40,000.

TAKING THE PLUNGE
Inspired to head out to an antiques fair or art gallery for the first time? Then why not take the plunge?
Taking your first step into the world of arts and antiques can be a daunting prospect but beginning an art collection or buying at auction is one of the most exciting steps you can take, and it’s important to realise you don’t need to be an expert to take the plunge. Arts and antiques
Arts, Antiques Collectibles
fairs present an amazing opportunity to see a huge variety of work in a short space of time, and allow you to quickly hone your taste. Whilst it’s great to go with an idea of the kind of thing you might be looking for, don’t be afraid to go with your instincts if something jumps out at you – sometimes you just can’t plan what you fall in love with.
Luci Noel, director of the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead (affordableartfair.com), says: “When you fi nd a piece that might be right for you, there are a few key questions you can ask that will give you a good idea of whether the work might be a good investment for the future: where the artist studied and how widely they have exhibited since graduating; whether they have been picked up by significant collectors; how well their work has sold; if they have won any prizes. A piece by an artist whose work is already in demand and who is making a name for themselves with a consistent body of work is far more likely to have a long and successful career.”
Affordable Art Fair Hampstead takes place from 11th-14th May affordableartfair.com
Jane Tennant is director of Tennants Auctioneers (tennants.co.uk) and says: “As one of the UK’s largest salerooms we work
with thousands of clients every year, both novice and experienced. Our top piece of advice to those new to auctions is to buy items that you love and really want to have in your home. As fashion changes, antiques fluctuate in value and even if something you buy loses a bit of value in the short term, if you love it then you won’t regret the purchase as you will have a lifetime’s enjoyment from it.”
Luci Noel agrees: “Whether investing in a household name or a rising star, there is no guarantee that the work of a particular artist will make a significant rise in value, so think of it as a personal and unique addition to your home; art is a great way to express yourself and make a statement within your living space.”
Once you have browsed your art gallery, perused your lots, or even made your choice –it is time to take the plunge, as Jane Tennant suggests: “There are many different ways of taking part in a sale these days, from leaving a commission bid, to bidding on the telephone, to the modern way of super-easy online bidding – so there really is no excuse not to take part!”

A GRAND DAY OUT
The UK’s galleries, fairs and museums make for a fascinating family day out
1
Antiques FairsThanks to shows like Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow, we have become a nation of antique connoisseurs who enjoy nothing more than rummaging through a box of belongings in the hope of finding some hidden treasure. Whether for profit or pleasure, a trip to an antiques fair is an enjoyable way
to spend the day, especially as we approach the summer months.
The Arts & Antiques Fair Olympia (olympia-art-antiques.com), is one of the longest-running antiques fairs in the UK and in 2017 enters an unprecedented 45th year. Taking over the Olympia Centre in London for seven days between June 26th – July
2nd, there will be 160 dealers showcasing a wide variety of antiques from the relatively affordable to exquisite items worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. Fair director, Mary Claire Boyd, said: “The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia features many dealers not seen at any other British fair. It also has London’s largest choice of antique furniture ranging from 16th- 20th century design.”
Staying in London, a regular highlight of the antiques calendar is the Alexandra Palace Antiques & Collectors Fair (alexandrapalace. com), which returns May 21st to this beautiful setting and makes the perfect hunting ground
for beautiful collectors’ pieces, ceramics, artwork, jewellery and much more. There will be few lovers of antiques who have not heard of the Newark Antiques Fair (iacf.co.uk/newark). Held 1st - 2nd June, this is the ultimate treasure hunting ground and is the largest event of its kind in Europe – a worldwide phenomenon; this is one event that needs to be experienced to be believed. Held at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Showground on an enormous 84-acre site, up to 2,500 stands attract thousands of dealers and buyers from around the globe.

With the launch of eBay many predicted we would see the end of in-house auctions completely, as the industry moved to the online sphere. However, while eBay was undoubtedly the fi rst stepping stone to revolutionising the way we engage with auctions in our day-to-day lives, the demise of the traditional auction house has failed to materialise and the tactile pleasure of viewing auction lots is something one can still indulge in. One upcoming auction, which is set to cause a stir, comes from one of the largest auction houses in the world, Bonhams ( bonhams.com), who are gearing up for their Russian Sale on June 7th at New Bond Street, London.
The highlight comes from the highly-regarded Russian artist, mitri Stelletsky, and his influential oil painting, Fox Hunt. aria Chernenko, Bonhams’ head of Russian Art, said: “We are delighted to offer five works by mitri Stelletsky, who contributed significantly to the understanding of modern Russian Art at a time when very little was known about it.”
The demise of the traditional auction house has failed to materialise
One auction house that can rival Bonhams for the sheer variety of lots on offer would
have to be Sotheby’s (sothebys.com), as a glimpse at the programme for their upcoming events reveals something for all tastes. May 23rd sees them host a sale of Medieval Manuscripts and Continental Books, June
th sees them offer 19th Century European Paintings, before June 7th reverts to more familiar ground with their Fine Jewels sale. Those looking to spruce up their home should visit Christie’s (christies.com) who
have an Interiors Sale on May 24th; if you need a piece of jewellery then you will want to head to Fellows’ ( fellows.co.uk) Jewellery Sale on June 8th, and Asian Art lovers should visit Roseberys (roseberys.co.uk) on June 27th.

For those looking to see what the future may hold, then a visit to the Science Museum (sciencemuseum.org.uk), is always a delight, and for those who have an interest in robotics their latest exhibition, Robots, is a mustsee. The exhibition looks at over 500 years of robotics, from a 1 th century mechanical monk to one of the fi rst walking bipedal robots. irector of the Science Museum Group, Ian Blatchford, says: “This exhibition explores the uniquely human obsession of recreating ourselves, not through paint or marble but in metal. Seeing robots through the eyes of those who built them reveals much about humanity’s hopes, fears and dreams.”
It feels like a tumultuous time for the world at present and someone at the Imperial War Museum iwm.org.uk) clearly has their fi nger on the pulse since their latest exhibition, People Power: Fighting for Peace, looks at the history of protest in the 20th century. They have managed to gather a unique
collection of over 300 items, spanning the First and Second World Wars, the nuclear disarmament campaigns of the Cold War and the street protests that dogged the Tony Blair government during the Iraq War, including the famous ‘Bliar’ posters. A fascinating exhibition proving that sometimes demanding your right to be heard can make a difference.
Princess iana was known throughout the world for her charity work and her devotion to helping those less fortunate than her, yet
an undeniable part of her appeal was wrapped up in what she was wearing; often the inescapable fate of any female public figure.
It is this aspect of her personality which the istoric Royal Palaces hrp.org.uk) latest exhibition places under the microscope. athering a series of outfits from iana’s life, from those early tentative public appearances to the bolder, more glamorous outfits that characterised her later life – fashion-lovers and fans will be in their element with this incredible exhibition.
Finally, for all of you who have budding wizards in your ranks, then put October 20th in the diary, as this is when the British Library (bl.uk) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with their exhibition, arry Potter: A istory of Magic. City of Culture
2017 is a special year in that it sees the return of the UK’s City of Culture designation. esigned to build upon the success of Liverpool winning the European Capital of Culture Award in 2008, the inaugural City of Culture award went to Londonderry in 2013, and in 2017 the honour has fallen upon ull. Sited unfashionably at the end of the M 2, ull may not be the fi rst city to spring to mind when one thinks of culture, but the city has gone to great strides to build its image in the past decade and is pulling out the stops to ensure its time as City of Culture is beneficial.
A large bulk of the awarded money has gone into renovating the city’s Ferens Art Gallery (hullcc.gov.uk/Ferens), which will be the host
of the 2017 Turner Prize and will exhibit the four shortlisted artists work to the public, free of charge. But it’s not just the Turner Prize to look forward to as Ferens Art allery also hosts a wide range of paintings from artists such as Lorenzetti, Rembrandt and, local artist, avid ockney. If you prefer your art a little closer to the knuckle, however, the recently-opened Humber Street Gallery (humberstreetgallery.co.uk) is a contemporary art space dedicated to showcasing the latest artists and their boundary-pushing, often provocative work.
There is more going on in ull in 2017 than its art shows, indeed if you are a music-lover then there are numerous music festivals
coming to ull in 2017 to suit all tastes. The city draws upon its proud maritime history to stage a Folk & Maritime Festival in July and, in the same month, the city hosts the Hull Jazz Festival where the freshest names in UK jazz perform alongside internationally-recognised artists. The true highlight of the city’s festivals is the Humber Street Sesh (humberstreetsesh.co.uk). Held in August, this award-winning grassroots festival takes over the city’s marina and exclusively hosts local musicians, which draws crowds of 30,000 people.
Hull is the only city in the UK to have white telephone boxes
The city’s first children’s literature festival, The Big Malarkey Festival, takes place at the end of June in anticipation of the Children’s Laureate winner being announced. Hull Truck Theatre continues to host productions from across the UK while promoting the work of local playwrights. With all this, and so much more besides, Hull is proving to be an attractive cultural destination in 2017. So why not journey up the M1 and see what all the fuss is about?

PERIOD HOMES
Thus, it is no surprise many of us seek to buy, maintain or renovate a period home and, as with all forms of property wrangling, this can come with numerous pros and cons.
This is something the owners of Zenith, a stunning Georgian Grade II listed property in Cornwall, will attest to. Though they now are able to share their home with the public through Unique Home Stays (uniquehomestays. com), it was a long process to elevate the home to the expected modern living standards.
“The renovation involved the restoration of the Georgian window shutters and replastering of some of the architects’ arches built in to the internal walls,” explains Emma Caddis, the owner of Zenith.
Home ownership could be considered to be like a game of Monopoly the fi rst step on the ladder is a bedsit on Old Kent Road, then one might go up a rung to a Bow Street terrace. That delightful townhouse upgrade is on Regent Street; and a large period home? Well, a period home would be Mayfair, in itself a meme for the more ostentatious end of things and a place (in equivalent terms at least), that all homeowners might strive towards. And why wouldn’t you? Period homes are highly sought after and represent traditional Britishness, encompassing the development of British architecture from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times, and all the rich history associated with those periods. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 ▶
Our fascination with period homes, their architecture and furnishings, is stronger than ever
“We knew we would have to install a new bathroom and hot water system to bring the house up to date, but the low point of the renovation was discovering the house had been dangerously wired! The re-wiring meant the floorboards through the entire house had
to come up, just as our electrician was about to go on holiday!”
But what was it about the house that made it all worthwhile?
PLEASE NOTE !!
“We fell in love with it as soon as we turned into the drive! The exterior is stunning and is matched by the beautiful light and proportions inside,” explains Mrs Caddis. “We love the simplicity and elegance. The fabulous fi replaces and original shutters framing the windows are unfussy; from a design point of view the house offers a beautiful backdrop that allows you to add a modern twist that harmonises with the period details.”

While the renovations have been a tremendous success it is important to remember the property was built in 1818, therefore maintenance is vitally important for ensuring its longevity. “Annual spring maintenance includes painting and repairing the sash windows and repointing the slate-hung facade and replacing any slates which may have come loose in winter winds,” explains Mrs Caddis.

One of the joys of owning or renovating period properties is selecting the furniture and furnishings. With this in mind, here are some of our favourite furnishing companies to help you splash out:

The features, both inside and out, are what bestow a period home with its unique character and feel, as do the objects and furnishings one might choose to fill it with. It is therefore important to insure your property and prized possessions, especially when you consider that period properties are going to be more susceptible to the elements simply by virtue of their age.
Anthony Wakefield from Buildings2Insure (buildings2insure.com) offers insurance for listed properties and as such has a great deal of working knowledge of the insurance and tax problems a period home owner may fall foul of. “Insurance Premium Tax is yet another tax that has to be paid with little or no benefit for the people that pay it,” explains Wakefield. “Originally set at 5%, it has been increased until, as from October last year, it now stands at 10% of all general insurance premiums, including alterations and additions.

Period Home Renovation Tips
We spoke to TV presenter, Georgina Burnett, who runs the interior design and IY website Property Porn propertyporntv.com), about her top five tips for getting the best out of your period home renovation:
Save Original Features Wherever Possible
I know from personal experience that builders will encourage you to remove period ceilings, Victorian cornices – roses and all – because it’s easier for them to start from scratch. This is not always necessary though and certainly not always cost effective. et an expert to check the ceilings are stable. If not, there are ways of pinning them so as not to lose the features that give the property its ‘wow’ factor. If the walls are lathe and plaster, I’m afraid these are likely to need replacing at some point so it’s worth doing at the start –
Unfortunately, if it’s a period property the chimney is likely
this way you can insulate walls and be sure they won’t crumble as you hang pictures on your freshly painted interiors!
Beware The Cost Of Windows
Original wooden sash windows are to diefor, however, they also rattle like a train, are drafty and the upkeep is costly and time-consuming. If you are buying a period property beware that replacing windows with double glazing either wooden or UP C is likely to be your single biggest cost.
Don’t Play With Fireplaces
Who doesn’t love a fi replace? Unfortunately, if it’s a period property the chimney is likely to need lining. Not checking this out could put you in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, so don’t take it lightly. Also be aware that if any work is carried out you will be expected to abide by building regulations to fit vents in the room.
Don’t Skimp On Electrics
And Plumbing
Replacing electrics and plumbing is a costly exercise. Replacing electrics and plumbing when you’ve already decorated and carpeted a property is soul destroying. If you’re buying a period property don’t think this is something you can save on unless you have certificates to prove it has been recently done. You need the right kind of boiler, modern radiators and decent water pressure and

potentially a host of other mod cons. Consider this carefully when the floorboards are already up!
Know When To Give In!
Original floorboards can be a beautiful thing to lovers of period properties, but they aren’t always the most practical when it comes to modern living. They tend to shrink and expand due to central heating, rendering crack-fi lling pointless. Without insulation, you will fi nd drafts impossible to avoid and thus rooms costly to heat. If you do want to honour the original boards, make sure a carpenter removes them for any work, as plumbers tend to butcher them!

What makes antique and vintage jewellery so uniquely popular?
Traditional thought dictates that one should be looking to spend three month’s salary on an engagement ring for that special someone. This is a figure large enough to cause palpitations in even the steeliest of lovers’ hearts but, increasingly, modern couples are choosing a less formulaic approach in order to achieve their dreams, satisfy their tastes and stay within budgets.
Antique jewellery provides the opportunity to own beautiful stones at a fraction of the price, without sacrificing quality in the process. In fact, when considering the upswing in popularity of antique jewellery pieces, and their associated history, many now regard them as superior.
For Pontus Silfverstolpe, co-founder of online auctioneers, Barnebys (barnebys. co.uk), the market for antique jewellery has been on the up: “Jewellery has been extremely strong in recent years with new records set year-after-year. There is a new generation who choose to buy vintage pieces as something more unique for their wedding rings. It is hardly surprising that a growing number of
couples come to auction houses to shop for engagement rings as the choice is much greater and prices are competitive.”
This is something that high street retailers are also finding, Mark Smith from York’s historic Cavendish Jewellers (cavendishjewellers.co.uk), reports an increase in interest surrounding antique jewellery, in particular from millennials and those of

us remarrying: “The rise in popularity of secondhand jewellery can be attributed in part to the rise in millennials’ more costconscious and individualistic shopping habits and their demand for more ethical sourcing of products.

For over 120 years, Hamilton & Inches has been continuously recognised by the Royal Household
of Scotland, the fi rst ever Triple Crown Trophy for the Six Nations Championship and the silver adornments on J.K Rowling’s, The Tales of Beedle of The Bard, which sold at Sotheby’s for 1.95 million.
For over 120 years, Hamilton & Inches has been continuously recognised by the Royal Household with various appointments. Today we hold a Royal Warrant as ‘Silversmiths and Clock Specialists to Her Majesty The ueen’.
In May 201 , amilton & Inches commenced the celebrations of our 150th anniversary with a series of
exclusive events, standout product launches and a partnership with celebrated Scottish sculptor, r Andy Scott, creator of the iconic Kelpies. The Kelpie icon has now been translated into a series of stunning silver artefacts bearing r Scott’s signature.
However, the most notable of launches was the unveiling of our Hamilton & Inches 150th Anniversary Signature Suite. A showcase of heritage entwined with a passion for the future of Scottish jewellery making, the Anniversary Suite was the brainchild of ebbie McKernan, ead of Jewellery. The three piece suite consists of a diamond collar, diamond earrings and a diamond cuff. The traditional honeycomb setting with double rows of 0 collection quality round brilliant cut diamonds with a total weight of 40.41cts, is a tribute to our company trademark. The cuff carries the H&I signature, hand-engraved to mark its authenticity by Master Engraver Ruaridh Malcomson. The fringe design of the Signature Suite collar originates from Edwardian times when tiaras were converted to neck pieces; the earrings are classic in their
design and the cuff is a contemporary piece – all are set in 18ct white gold.
In 150 years, the original philosophy of Hamilton & Inches remains true, that pieces, whatever the price, should be of high quality and good value. The company has a proud heritage of customer service and craftsmanship –values which continue to be held in high importance to this day.

“The number of marriages has been rising since 2013, partly thanks to a growth in couples in their late 50s and 60s getting hitched for a second or third time. This growth in second marriages has contributed to the boom in secondhand and antique rings, which can be half the price of new pieces.”
But what kind of antique jewellery is in vogue at the moment? While these things are ultimately a matter of taste, auction houses like Barnebys are well placed to see what people are spending their money on.
“Natural pearls are having a renaissance. Since the arrival of cultured pearls in the 1920s, the price of natural pearls has dropped,” explains Mr Silfverstolpe. “However, in the last 20 years the price of natural pearls has begun to rise again.”
If you are looking to purchase an antique gem as an investment rather than an accessory then it is worth leaning towards the old, consistent favourites.
“Original and unique art deco pieces are currently very desirable and can command high prices. Edwardian jewellery is popular whereas Victorian pieces are currently less fashionable, rose gold is once again coming back into fashion though and, of course, signed pieces by recognised designers are always sought after,” says Mr Smith.
“Diamonds are usually going to be more valuable than most other gems, but some top-quality rubies and emeralds can still command high prices.”

GLOBAL ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY is being cited as a reason people from overseas are rushing to invest in antique jewellery from the UK, according to the experts at thefinejewellerycompany.com
Rebecca Share, gemologist at the online jeweller, explains: “We’ve seen an increase in foreign buyers from places as far afield as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They’re buying bespoke, romantic and stylish antique pieces from bygone eras and have a particular interest in Victorian items.”

When purchasing antique jewellery there are a few things to inspect before you buy.
Olly Gerrish, from the Antique Jewellery Company (antiquejewellerycompany.com), has been trading jewellery for over 40 years and thus knows what to look for when it comes to workmanship: “With a ring, always check the gallery is not worn. This is the openwork section underneath the top of the ring and can be deteriorated or damaged. It is hard to repair, so don’t buy a ring with this problem.
“Stones should not be worn or chipped, although you can have them re-polished should you wish. Also the shank should not be too worn, though it is acceptable to put a new half shank on.”
One of the other important distinctions to keep in mind when purchasing jewellery is the distinction
THE RUSH FOR EXQUISITE ANTIQUE JEWELLERY
between antique and vintage jewellery. Antique jewellery is roughly 100 years old or older and tends to incorporate the Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Victorian and Georgian designs. Vintage jewellery tends to be dated at around 20 to 30 years old and encompasses more modern styles of jewellery.
It is important to know the distinction, as there is a substantial cost difference between the two and unscrupulous dealers will look to pass reproductions on to you. As ever, be vigilant and seek an expert’s opinion before committing to a purchase.
Regardless of which style of jewellery you wish to buy, there is little doubt that the antique jewellery market will not be diminishing anytime soon. “Selling antiques can be difficult because of the shipping expenses, but jewellery really has a global

A TOY STORY
The world of antique and vintage toys holds a perennial popularity for investors and collectors
Toys have the ability to transport you in time and space back to your childhood and almost everyone can remember their favourites. It is this nostalgia, when combined with recent trends in the film and television world, which means vintage (and not so vintage) toys can be rather lucrative.
Richard Lewis, of online auctioneers TheSaleRoom.com, believes a key elementoriginal Hot Wheels, Game Boys, comic books and action figures are increasing in popularity. This may be attributed to Generation ‘X’, who were born between the 19 0s and 1980s and are searching for, and investing in, nostalgic toys from their era.
e continues: “We have seen a 10% yearly rise in searches for Star Wars in particular, with 25% of sought after toys selling above the estimated price at online auction in 201 .”
“The market is now focusing increasingly on more recent products - most notably Star Wars and Action Man to name but a few

André Haak is a vintage toys and games expert from Catawiki (catawiki.com), an online auction website for ‘special objects’, and has seen a huge increase in those looking to buy and sell vintage toys and games. “When looking for those special vintage pieces, the very best toys and games were manufactured in Germany and Japan, with these items still commanding impressive prices,” says Haak. “What is often unique about these toys is their fantastic build quality. In terms of battery
and clockwork operated toys, this means most will still be in good working condition.”
Aside from the recent and well-publicised surge in Star Wars toys interest, Haak has recently seen a huge rise in the collectability of vintage, Chinese tin toys.
“Up until five years ago you could practically give these away, but nowadays they are very much sought after by Chinese collectors,” says Haak. “I have also seen a recent surge in the popularity of tinplate railway models – while railway models are always a popular collector’s item these look set to keep growing and growing.” uality is always paramount when it comes to assessing purchases, whether for nostalgia or investment reasons, and Haak stresses that

doing one’s research is essential before you commit to a purchase. But what if you have already begun your collection, or have your childhood toys stored in the attic – how best should you care for them?
“The elements are a toy’s worst enemy,” continues Haak. “Keep the toys away from sunlight and beware humidity if storing them for long periods of time. Keep the toys and boxes separated if you can, so the toy does not cause pressure damage to the box.
“This reminds me of a sale from last September – a wind-up singing bird. It was constructed in the 19th century but the mechanism was still functioning in 201 . So, people may just be on to something when they say, ‘they don’t make them like they used to’.” A

STOP THE CLOCKS
The interest in timepieces is fuelled by their investment appeal and enduring charm
Horology is the study of time and has been at the forefront of human endeavour ever since man began to question his place in the world. From clocks to watches, sundials, hourglasses, chronometers and atomic clocks, we have been eternally charmed with creating instruments with which to record time’s passing.
And, while ornate mechanical clocks have long held a fascination, it is the smaller, more practical (and fashionable), wristwatches that have really cemented a place in our hearts – a trend which is looking set to continue, both in terms of watches as collector’s pieces and as investments.
Nino Santi is general manager of Watches and Jewellery of Bond St. (watchcentre.com), and as such sees some exceptionally rare pieces,
sourced from around the world.
“The market for rare and vintage watches is very strong, especially as many people are looking for alternative investments,” says Santi. “In terms of pre-owned watches and vintage watches, the strong brands are predominantly Rolex and Patek Philippe. These types of watches are getting harder and harder to find, and so their value will continue to increase.”
Richard Lewis, chief operating o cer for auctioneers TheSaleRoom.com, says: “One really strong area is gentlemen’s mechanical watches – particularly the so-called ‘tool’ watches – those made for the army or pilots and divers. They have come to epitomise the alpha male and as such are considered the
number one accessory for men. A watch’s history and design reflect the personality of the wearer, allowing for true self-expression.”
Watch and clock expert, Adrian Hailwood of Fellows auctioneers ( fellows.co.uk), agrees:
“As the major Swiss brands are obsessed with their heritage, going vintage allows you to own the original watches that their premium heritage re-issues are inspired by. The heyday of tool watches was from the

“Lesser brands that produced good looking steel chronographs in the 19 0s and 1970s will also see significant increases. The market will continue to polarise with regard to condition and originality with the best examples making record prices.”
Nino Santi continues: “Patek Philippe has always been a world leader. But, if people perhaps don’t have the fi nance to pay for these big names then you have brands such as Omega, which can still yield good returns, and have produced some beautiful watches which are very collectible.”

And this continuing interest in timepieces is showing robustness in all quarters, says Richard Lewis: “Currently one of the strongest aspects of the horology market is Golden Age English clocks 1 0-1720), particularly those by the blue-chip makers such as aniel uare, Joseph Knibb and Thomas Tompion. This era of discovery and great horological development has seen prices continue to rise in recent years. It’s the attractiveness, history and mechanisms in these clocks that make them such hugely popular items for collectors.”

Brexit and Trump characterised 201 and 2017 is turning into a world of post-truth and fake news. Both create uncertainty as people speculate on what is real: in politics, media, and business. Emotions and personal beliefs take over from facts, as ‘esteemed’ sources lose their polish and people don’t know what to do, or who to trust.
Thankfully, for anyone prepared to use reason to guide emotion, and evidence to taper supposition, the outlook isn’t so bleak. Investing in a time of turbulence isn’t easy, but there are still ways to balance your portfolios.
Keith Heddle, managing director of investments at Stanley Gibbons, says: “Investing in tangible, heritage assets such as rare stamps and coins can be one way of diversifying your portfolio – transferring some of your capital away from mainstream assets and into something real, and uncorrelated to the stock market.
“While interest rates are so low, cash struggles to stay ahead of inflation, so once again many people are looking for alternatives to broaden their asset allocation.”
Of course, it’s not possible to predict what the value of an individual rare stamp or coin may be in the future, but when it comes to past performance, selected investment-grade stamps and coins have outperformed many other markets in terms of their consistency and lack of volatility – and these are assets that have stood the test of time – some for thousands of years.
Thesaleroom.com works with Europe’s leading auction houses and regularly hosts more than 5,000 auctions per year for a wide range of
clients. Richard Lewis is their chief operating o cer, and believes coins and banknotes will always remain a huge part of the collecting market: “The one big change in the numismatic marketplace over the past decade has been the contribution of banknotes and other forms of scripophily such as cheques and share certificates.
“Collecting banknotes is all about rarity and condition. It is also, to an extent, about national collecting – there has been a big rise in prices of far eastern

Banknote collecting, in particular, has recently captured the imagination of the British public with the release of the new £5 note last year – the buzz around fi nding a note with an early serial number, and just how much that could be worth, fi lled the national papers and social media platforms, exposing the potential of banknote collecting to a far wider audience.

INVESTORS CONTINUE TO PUT THEIR FAITH IN GOLD COINS!
T ERE AS BEEN an upsurge in the number of bullion investors putting their money into gold coins as a way of protecting their wealth.
BullionByPost, the UK’s number one online bullion dealer, believe the uncertainty produced by the Brexit vote has led to the demand for gold in the UK increasing by almost 40% last year. Commentators say whilst the uncertainty continues the demand for gold, and specific collectable coins, shows no sign of abating.
Rob Halliday-Stein, managing director and founder of bullionbypost.co.uk, says: “There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world and gold is a good thing to hold during those times. Specific coins might not earn more than the spot price but investors are
increasingly aware that, in the future, individual coins may become three or four times more valuable as demand increases.”
bullionbypost.co.uk stocks the UK’s widest range of gold proof coins and box sets, including a wide range of limited edition sets and coins.

Stamps have remained stable investments
It is often said that assets from history endure the test of time, and when interest rates are low, or even plain stagnant, it can often be more interesting and profitable to invest in something that you not only have a personal interest in, but that has some history attached. Coins and stamps have been a collector’s item for centuries, and to this day still remain a huge part of the collecting and investment market.
“Over the past 10 years, the value of the Stanley Gibbons 250 Index, which charts the price of Britain’s top investment-grade stamps, has risen by 133.5%, a compound annual growth rate of 8.8%,” says eddle.

Mr eddle believes the modern entrepreneurial mindset often sees ‘alternative’ investments as perfectly normal, appealing and reassuring. “There is something very reassuring about assets that have endured the test of time, from rare stamps of the British Empire, to rare coins that go back to the days of the Roman Empire,” he says. “The Empires no longer exist – but the items they left behind, that we treasure today, remind us of their value to culture and to shaping the world as we know it.”

KEEP YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Classic cars and the world of automobilia are going from strength to strength
With well over half a million classic cars on the road in the United Kingdom, classic motoring is an enduring passion that inspires many of us, and for a number of reasons.
David Barzilay is chairman of Classic Motor Cars Ltd. (classic-motor-cars.co.uk), and says: “Most people have fond memories of certain cars, especially the ones their family members owned. For example, the Jaguar Mk2 that uncle Harry had was also the car of choice for both villains and the police, so it had an edgy appeal!”
“The growing interest in classic cars exists for a number of reasons but much of it is about
nostalgia and happy memories, they are the vehicles that took us on holiday or the ones that we drove when we fi rst started work.”
And, with their perenial popularity, classic cars are also proving to be a strong performer in these days of low investment returns.
Will Smith, of Silverstone Auctions ( silverstoneauctions.com), says of the continuing performance of this market:
“Over the past five years an index tracking the performance of 50 rare classic cars rose by 142%. Although Porsche, Jaguar and Ferrari prices seemed to be levelling off, the more affordable 70s to 90s classics perform well.”
The traditional view of a classic car

have cash in the bank, and receive very little return on their traditional investments,” says Smith.
At the more classic end is James Guess, director at Feathers Lifestyle ( featherslifestyle.co.uk), a classic car and motorsports experience company. He says:
“There is increasing interest in the scene and I believe this stems from classic cars having that ‘boyhood’ appeal. The owners now were the young boys dreaming of these cars in their youth. Modern cars just don’t have the uniqueness; classic cars are all so beautiful, each with their own character. In

addition, events such as Goodwood Revival and the Silverstone Classic, where you can see these cars race to their limits, will show you how good these cars really are.”
This growth of grassroots interest and appeal seems to be matched by the classic car market as a whole and the higher end of the market (£1m +) remains extremely buoyant. But, hardnosed investors aside, when it comes to the upper-end of the classic car market, enthusiasts of all types are now wanting more from their classic car ownership experience and are heading to the tracks in record numbers.
“There has been a massive increase in amateur motorsports in the last decade,” says Guess. “Classic car owners now realise they can buy their dream
car, get a race licence, and then actually go out at the weekend and race. There is no limit to what the amateur can achieve, with many even looking to race the Le Mans 24 Hours. However, only a few make it – you need a great deal of talent and a very large cheque book!”
And, if you do have a classic car or have recently bought one, now is the time to get it ready to be driven and enjoyed during the spring and summer seasons, says Barzilay: “ on’t forget to consider basics such as checking the fluid levels, tyre pressure and looking under the bonnet. Whether you do it yourself, or trust your local garage or restorer, will be a matter for you, but make sure you get the most out of the driving season.”
Not too far from the bright lights of the race circuit were the race tuned’ performance cars of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s – vehicles that
offered a racing look-and-feel to the man on the street. As young men from this era come of age, the demand for these contemporary classics has grown exponentially.
“Cars like the BMW E30 M3, Ford Sierra RS500 and Mercedes 190 Evolution models are in huge demand,” says Smith. “We’ve seen a surge in interest in these models, as buyers wake up to their performance, homologated provenance and fashionable 1980s looks.”
Barzilay agrees: “As each year goes by new classics emerge based on different criteria: how old they are, what they are worth, historical interest or whether they are worth preserving rather than scrapping. Some will be more popular than others, and that is when the value really starts to climb.”
So, from safe investment to fun nostalgia, what is it that drives our obsession with cars?
“It’s really a boy thing isn’t it?” says uess. “Ever since the invention of the motorcar man has challenged himself to go faster and further than before. This has created amazing machines and drivers and, whether you play with cars for a hobby or to make a living, cars are simply irresistible!”
