About Abu Dhabi Festival 2013 Patron: H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research Over the last 10 years, Abu Dhabi Festival has grown in strength and stature to become one of the most prominent arts festivals in the Arab world, and a key player on the festival circuit worldwide. Each year, it presents innovative works, embraces myriad cultures, and nurtures new creations to inspire, inform and excite an ever-growing audience that spans the generations. Over the last 10 years, performers from over 50 countries have presented hundreds of concerts, performances and exhibitions across the UAE during the Abu Dhabi Festival. The 2013 edition celebrates this ‘Decade of Distinction’ in style with a plethora of breathtaking concerts and performances including the legendary Spanish tenor, Plácido Domingo. Proud of its role as a ‘Festival of Firsts’, the 2013 Abu Dhabi Festival adds to its impressive roster of 7 commissions, 4 world premieres, and 13 Arab premieres. The 2013 world premieres ‘Poème Orientale’ by Bechara El Khoury and ‘The Rahbani Legacy’ by Oussama & Ghadi Rahbani, mark the birth of significant new creations for Arab artistic expression. Exemplifying the UAE as a global beacon for culture, Abu Dhabi Festival pioneers the presentation of internationally acclaimed artists in the Gulf and wider Arab world. In doing so, it has carved its name in the annals of history. Over the last decade, The World Orchestra for Peace, the Bolshoi Ballet, the London Symphony Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis and Maxim Vengerov, among others, have all chosen the Festival as their gateway to the region. 2013 upholds this tradition by welcoming for the first time to the UAE the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, Gilberto Gil, YUNDI, Joshua Bell, and Bryn Terfel. Over the last decade, the Abu Dhabi Festival has taken children and young people on a voyage of discovery. In addition to the ticketed performances, the 10th anniversary Festival edition welcomes thousands of students and the general public to free concerts, performances and workshops, many of which pay homage to the UAE’s rich cultural heritage. The Abu Dhabi Festival is a unique and unforgettable experience. Join us in celebrating the UAE as a capital of culture. Join us in marking a Decade of Distinction!

Arab World Premiere Created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Paris-based Institut du Monde Arabe. This unprecedented exhibition presents the most exhaustive panorama of contemporary Arab art to date, and features painting, sculpture, photography, video and installations, as well as special commissions and works by UAE artists including Karima Al Shomaly and Ebtisam Abdulaziz. At the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe, Arab contemporary art reveals a great plurality of styles. Many of the exhibited artists share more than one culture. Some of them have settled in Europe or the USA while a great many of them have also returned to their
homelands. They thus create a unique link between East and West; a link characterised by its openness towards the world and the profound upheavals that are affecting it. Younger exhibition visitors can create their own works inspired by pieces seen in the exhibition using a range of creative materials. Accompanied by a series of educational workshops (see page 23), a family art studio, guided tours, and a limited-edition book, this exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the region’s recent visual arts developments.

Thursday, 14th March & Friday, 15th March – 8:00pm, Emirates Palace Auditorium
UAE Premiere One of the world’s finest ballet companies makes its UAE debut with ‘Homage to Fokine’. Choreographed by the illustrious Mikhail Fokine, this collection of one-act ballets entranced audiences when Sergei Diaghilev’s revolutionary troupe, Ballets Russes, performed them at the turn of the 20th century. ‘Chopiniana’ (later renamed ‘Les Sylphides’) is one of Fokine’s earliest masterpieces and was premiered by the Mariinsky itself in 1908. With the music of Frederic Chopin, the piece celebrates the lyrical and poetic qualities of Romantic Ballet Blanc and elegantly expresses the sublime nature of dance. With music by the German Romantic composer Carl Maria von Weber, the second work ‘Le
Spectre de la Rose’ tells the story of a debutante who falls asleep after her first ball. ‘The Dying Swan’ was originally made for the Russian ballerina and Mariinsky legend, Anna Pavlova, and tenderly follows the final moments in the life of a swan. The evening’s finale is in bold contrast to the earlier elegiac pieces. The Mariinsky’s vigorous presentation of ‘Scheherazade’ accompanied by Rimsky-Korsakov’s score is sure to intoxicate.
