T raditions / S taff P hone D irectory St. Cloud State Traditions: History of the Nickname The Husky Nickname: St. Cloud State's nickname has gone through several changes over the years. Early nicknames included "Normals," "Teachers," "Bear Cats," "Peds," and "Flying Clouds." There are several theories about how the nickname "Huskies" began to be used. One says that it is a result of a student contest. Another suggests that the name originated with the football team.

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

There was a story in the February 4, 1938, edition of the College Chronicle which referred to the "football huskies." Since huskies was not capitalized in the story, the author could have been referring to the team's size, and this possibly led to the nickname. Another theory is that the nickname originated within the football team. "I think it occurred during Coach Kasch's days as football coach (1935-42)," said John Weisman, former SCSU Dean of Men and former coach. "The team just started calling themselves the "Huskies." Why the name was chosen or who exactly selected it remains unclear. The name could have been intended to mean "burly, robust or large," "one that is husky," or "a heavily coated working dog of the arctic region.” Perhaps the nickname was meant to encompass all three meanings. Regardless of its origin, the Husky nickname continues to represent SCSU as a symbol and image of strength.

The St. Cloud State Rouser Oh, here we are, the gang and all, to cheer our team to victory. SCSU has heard the call, We're here to show our loyalty, RAH! RAH! Come on team fight, We'll win this game, and to our colors we'll be true. We'll sing our song, both loud and long, to victory — S.C.S.U.

The St. Cloud State Hymn Sing to thee our Alma Mater, High on oakcrowned banks, Emblem of our search for knowledge, Symbol of our youthful ranks, Filled with fires of true ambition, Let us ever be; Loyal to thy fine tradition, Hail St. Cloud, to thee. By the river’s flowing water, By its islands fair, may the loyal sons and daughters, thy enduring friendship share. May they with sincere ambition, through the years e’er be; Loyal to thy fine tradition, Hail St. Cloud, to thee.

The city of St. Cloud, home to St. Cloud State University, is located in the heart Minnesota’s scenic Central Lakes Region along the wooded banks of the Mississippi and Sauk Rivers -- 65 miles northwest of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. St. Cloud serves as the commercial and business hub for over 160,000 people and three counties. The area is at the center of Minnesota's fastest growing metropolitan areas. Incorporated in 1856, St. Cloud served as a stop on the famed Red River Trail. The city’s location on the Mississippi River, helped St. Cloud grow as a center for the lumber industry. Another local resource closely identified with the region is granite. The first granite in the area was quarried in 1869, and the industry rapidly helped St. Cloud gain the nickname “Granite City.”

A thletic F acilities FIRST CLASS PROGRAMS, FIRST CLASS FACILITIES St. Cloud State University's tradition of excellence in athletics is mirrored by the many outstanding athletic facilities that are featured on the SCSU campus. The majority of SCSU's home sporting events take place at the following locations: Halenbeck Hall, Husky Stadium, Selke Field, Dick Putz Field, and the National Hockey Center. Selke Field is the home to Husky softball, which placed third in the nation in 2004. The softball diamond is located in the southeast corner of the Selke Field athletic complex. Bleachers and two dugouts complete the playing area. In addition, the SCSU baseball team has a practice field at Selke, and SCSU students use the facility for intramural soccer and touch football.

The newest addition to the SCSU facilities list is Husky Stadium, which opened in September 2004. This multi-purpose facility offers seating for 4,198 spectators and is the home to SCSU football and soccer. The field overlooks the scenic Mississippi River and features a state-of-the-art synthetic playing surface along with lights for night play. In the winter months, the field is covered with an inflatable bubble that provides an outstanding practice space for many of the SCSU athletic teams and SCSU’s recreation sports programs. Other features of the facility include a press box, President’s Suite, concession stands, ticket booths and bathroom facilities. The stadium is connected to Halenbeck Hall by a new student recreation facility that features a massive fitness center, climbing walls, classrooms, dance studios, snack bar, office space and storage locations.

SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall Halenbeck Hall was completed and dedicated in 1965. The main gymnasium of Halenbeck Hall has a seating capacity of 6,451. Volleyball, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and swimming all compete in the main area of Halenbeck. In the summer of 2001, a new wooden floor, arena seating and scoreboard were installed, which makes Halenbeck one of the best courts in the NCC. The Halenbeck Aquatics Center has seating capacity for 500 spectators. Its features include a six-lane pool and a diving well with one and three meter boards. Halenbeck Hall is home to the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame, which was completed in the spring of 1996. The Hall of Fame is located in the south lobby of the main gymnasium and houses the Hall of Fame plaques, as well as trophy cases for each of the Huskies' sports. The building also houses several classrooms, a complete computer lab and offices for the coaches and athletic administrative staff. Halenbeck Hall South was completed in 1980. It provides SCSU with an indoor training facility for track, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis. The major feature of Halenbeck South is an activity center and multiple purpose area bordered by a running track. A new surface was installed in the Halenbeck South Fieldhouse during the summer of 2006. The facility also houses six regulation size racquetball courts, a wrestling practice room, intramural offices, climbing wall and a human performance laboratory. To the east of Halenbeck and Halenbeck South are outdoor tennis courts. SCSU’s nordic ski team practices at Halenbeck Hall South and the Mississippi River. SCSU's nordic ski team practices at nearby Riverside Park, which is located directly across the Mississippi River from the SCSU campus. The Mississippi River also provides many recreation opportunities for the outdoor sports enthusiast, including fishing, canoeing and hiking.

Head Coach

Pat Dolan

Coach Dolan officially began his tenure with SCSU on June 15th, 2007, and he most recently completed his first season with the Huskies in 2008. A tested coaching veteran with a record of success, Dolan led the Huskies to a 27-23-1 overall record in 2008 - the most wins posted by the Huskies since 1999. He also led the club to a third place finish in the always rugged NCC, and a 13-12 league record. The 2008 season saw the Huskies play several games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, along with a week-long spring break trip for a series of games in the Phoenix area. Back home, the Huskies moved their home games to Joe Faber Field at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud - widely Dolan’s Huskies are poised to make an immediate impact in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference - the league that SCSU will move to in 2008-09. In Dolan’s 17 years as a head baseball coach his teams have captured an amazing 10 conference regular season championships. During this span he has compiled a 610-347-1 overall record with 328 wins in 12 years at the college level and 282 wins at the American Legion level.“There is a great Husky baseball tradition that goes way beyond my years. The past few years have been a struggle, but what can’t go unnoticed are the great successes Skip Lorsung has had for his 29 year tenure, along with his predecessors, Coach Stanek, and Coach Kasper. I can only hope to fill these great baseball people’s shoes and take our Husky Baseball Family to the next level,” said Dolan. Success at Dakota State Dolan helped turn around two struggling college baseball programs in the past nine years and helped develop them into championship-caliber teams ranked nationally in the NCAA Division II and NAIA polls. Dolan has had 14 players sign professional baseball contracts, along with over 50 All-Conference selections and 10 All-Americans. During his 11 years as a head coach at the college level 75 of his student athletes have graduated and repeatedly has had teams carry close to a 3.0 grade point average.

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

- Second season at SCSU - Two wins short of team record, with 27 last season - Six team and 10 individual records were set last season - Head coach at Dakota State, Belmont Abbey and Itasca C.C. prior to coming to St. Cloud State - First Team NJCAA All American at Iowa Western in 1988 - Played two years at Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton

“As proud as I am of the accomplishments our student athletes have had on the field I’m even more proud of all the successes they earned in earning their college degrees and becoming successful in the real world.” In Dolan’s last season at Dakota State University, the team finished with a 39-12 record setting a school record for wins for the third consecutive season. DSU was ranked in the Top 10 for the first time ever at #7. This was the fifth consecutive season the Trojans were recognized nationally. Dakota State’s first year under Dolan’s command in 2001 was their most successful season since 1985 when the Trojan’s won their last conference championship. The 2001-2002 squad tripled the amount of wins (15-22) the previous three years combined (5-99) and were regionally ranked for the first time in 18 years. The 2002-2003 Trojans made the “turnaround,” by shattering nearly every individual and team record in the 2003 season. They won their first ever NAIA Regional Tournament and advanced to their first-ever Super-Regional, while setting the school record with 33 victories. They finished the season nationally ranked for the first time in school history. The Trojans took a small step backwards in the win column in 2003-2004, while playing their most difficult schedule ever. The Trojan’s finished 27-22 and finished as runner ups in the DAC Tournament.

SCSU Looks to Compete in Year One of NSIC Existence “There is a great correlation between success between the white lines and work ethic and the type of person you are,” Dolan says. “I would like to believe the success I have had is related to my positive philosophies and the energy I put forth. A commitment to excellence starts with the head coach, which should channel to the ball players and others within the program.” Central Minnesota Roots Dolan was a three-sport standout, six time All-Conference selection, 10-time letterwinner at Cold Spring-Rocori in Central Minnesota. He was selected as the “Central Minnesota Baseball Player of the Year,” and participated in both the Minnesota High School Lion’s All-Star games for baseball and basketball. “Other than my father, I learned more about life and coaching from Bob Brink, Jim Thelen and Tom Bergner than anyone else. I was truly blessed to have the coaching legends I had back 20 years ago. They set the foundation for most all of my coaching philosophies today. After earning All-American honors and setting school records of a .483 batting average, 92 RBIs, 60 BB and 47 SB at Iowa Western CC, Dolan transferred to Florida Atlantic University to play for Kevin Cooney. “I also owe a lot to both Coach Nowachyk and Coach Cooney. They were two different types of coaches, but they both got the most out of their players and they both were unbelievably successful. To this day I still pick their baseball brains.”

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

Dolan began his coaching career at his alma matter in Cold Spring as the head coach of American Legion Post 428 and assistant coach with Cold Spring-Rocori. He compiled a 204-81 overall record and guided his teams to seven league championships. Dolan Begins College Coaching Career At the age of 25, he became one of the youngest coaches in college baseball at Itasca CC in Grand Rapids, MN. Dolan began his collegiate coaching career with an amazing 21 consectative victories., compiling a winning percentage of .781. Twelve players from his first recruiting class went on to play college baseball at four-year institutions. ICC earned national recognition by being ranked as high as #10 in the NJCAA poll and captured two consecutive Northern Minnesota League Championships. After spending two years as the associate head baseball coach at St. Andrew’s College, Dolan took over the head coaching honors at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC. The year prior to Dolan’s arrival Belmont Abbey had a record of 12-36 and last winning record came over 30 years ago. A total transformation took place. The 2000-2001 season brought a regular season CVAC Championship, CVAC Tournament runner-up, 39-18 record, #26 NCAA Division II National ranking, and a “CVAC Coach of the Year” award for Dolan. Nearly every individual and team record was shattered. During his three-year stint 16 of his 17 seniors graduated. “Expectations are high at SCSU, which they should be. Our goals are to graduate our student-athletes, provide them with a great college experience and win baseball games. Winning the NCC Championship and gaining a berth in the NCAA Central Plains Regional Tournament are our baseball goals. With the commitment, work ethic, and togetherness of every member of the Husky Baseball Family these high standards are attainable.” “I’m a firm believer in that individually and as a team you have to practice like you play. There are a lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda type players out there that ‘talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.’ Players that play for me are guys that want to work on their weaknesses and improve their strengths, and are self disciplined on and off the field.” “I want to teach the game so every player has a complete understanding of the game. Coaching to me is teaching, and not just the fundamentals of baseball but also the fundamentals of life.” THE PAT DOLAN FILE Assistant Coach, Cold Spring-Rocori High School, 1990-1993 Head Coach, Cold Spring American Legion Post 428, 1990-1997 Assistant Coach, Itasca Community College, 1994 Head Coach, Itasca Community College, 1995-96 Associate Head Coach, St. Andrew’s College, 1997-98 Head Coach, Belmont Abbey College, 1999-2001 Head Coach, Dakota State University, 2001-2007 Head Coach, St. Cloud State University, 2007-present

Pete Pratt Pitching Coach Peter Pratt will return for his second year in the SCSU dugout in 2008-09. In his first season back with the Huskies, Pratt guided the Huskies’ pitching staff and helped it chart impressive numbers in 2008. He saw two of his pitchers earn All-NCC Honorable Mention recognition (Tim Radamacher and David Deminsky) and he also helped groom two players for stints in the Northwoods League during the summer of 2008 (Tim Scott with Rochester and Deminsky with the St. Cloud River Bats). Pratt helped the Huskies lower their team ERA from 7.13 in 2007, to 5.33 in 2008. SCSU also improved its team strikeout total from 227 in 2007 to 282 in 2008. A former standout player for the Huskies from 1985-88, Pratt owns four single season, and two career pitching records and served as a captain for two seasons at SCSU. Pratt went on to serve for three seasons as the squad’s pitching coach from 1989-91. The Huskies won the 1989 conference championship and the 1991 NCC tournament title. SCSU also advanced to the NCAA tournament in 1991.

2009 St. Cloud State Baseball After a record setting 2008 season, the 2009 edition of St. Cloud State Baseball will attempt to enter the Northern Sun as a top tier team, as the Huskies will look to improve on their best season since 1999. “We feel very good about this year’s team and the potential it carries,” said head coach Pat Dolan. “I believe you have to be an optimistic coach, but with that said, everything this team has shown since our start in late August makes me believe we will continue to develop into a championship caliber team. These guys have represented St. Cloud State well, both on and off the field.” The Huskies have a majority of the 2008 team that won 27 games returning, and all signs point to more success for St. Cloud State Baseball. “One difference I see this year is more overall depth, which creates competition,” said Dolan. “We were able to red-shirt some very solid players, which shows we are going in the right direction. Having most of our team back, and with the pitching depth we’ve brought in, makes me believe we should be able to keep building,” Dolan added. SCHEDULE

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

For the second straight season, Dolan has the Huskies opening at the HHH Metrodome for their earliest start (February 1) in program history. Midland Lutheran is the opening day opponent in the cozy confines of the dome, where the Huskies will play their first six, and 10 of their first 14 games. The Huskies played 10 games there in 2008, going 3-6-1. Those games included match-ups with Division I North Dakota State and Division III’s third place finisher in Wisconsin-Whitewater. Following the season opener against Midland Lutheran, the Huskies and UW-Parkside will tangle in the dome for doubleheaders on February 7 and 8. After the first road trip of the season to Missouri Southern on Valentine’s Day weekend, SCSU will wrap up its Metrodome slate with a non-conference quartet of games against Bemidji State before heading to Arizona for the annual RussMatt Invitational. While in the Phoenix area, the Huskies will play 10 games against seven opponents which include R.I.T (N.Y.), Rockford (Ill.), Northern State, Malone (Ohio), Wheaton (Mass.), SUNY-New Paltz and College of New Jersey. All in all, the Huskies will play their first 23 games at road or neutral sites. Following the spring break trip, SCSU will dive into Northern Sun games with March 21 and 22 dates against Minnesota, Crookston at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. The Huskies are set for 18 games on nine dates at home along with hosting the Northern Sun Conference Tournament. PITCHERS The Huskies return 22 members from last season’s team and welcome 19 new players for the 2009 campaign. This added depth has been vital to the pitching staff, which boasts quality from top to bottom. “With the added depth, competition has been fierce for the top 8-10 spots,” said pitching coach Pete Pratt. “These guys have exhibited superb work ethics and great determination thus far, which should carry over to games. If the staff can maintain composure and let natural abilities take over, we should be very competitive,” added Pratt. Leading the returnees on the Husky staff are All-North Central Conference Honorable Mention pitchers Tim Radmacher (Rosemount) and David Deminsky (Sartell). Radmacher, a senior, served as the Husky closer last year recording a team-best 2.79 ERA with a 4-1 record. He also added four saves and 21 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched. “Tim is a proven winner who will be asked to have a bigger role this season both on and off the field,” said the coaching staff. A closer last season, Radmacher will be asked to more consistent and counted on in a regular basis to stabilize this year’s squad. Deminsky, a junior, was the Huskies number one weekend hurler, posting a 4-3 mark with a 4.07 ERA. More impressive, Deminsky struck out 55 while walking only nine in just under 60 innings pitched. “David was our most consistent pitcher last season,” said the coaches. “He will be asked to lead the staff again with hard work and dedication.”

Juniors Pat DeLaHunt (Apple Valley) and Tim Scott (Ely), along with senior Chris Koenig (St. Cloud) bring back a combined 14 wins, 142 strikeouts and 188 innings. “Chris will help lead this young staff on and off the field,” said the coaches. “He has a can-do attitude and is never afraid of a challenge.” Scott and Koenig both set the Husky record for most games started in a season with 13 apiece. “Tim brings a wealth of experience to this year’s squad after pitching for the past two seasons in Northwoods League with the Rochester Honkers,” said the staff. Another integral part of the bullpen returns in junior Matt Swanson (Upsala). Swanson came one appearance short of a team record by making 17, 16 of which came from the bullpen. Swanson ate up 38 innings (31 in relief) to bridge the gap from the middle innings to Radmacher and is expected to do the same this season.

Rounding out the returning arms is sidewinding sophomore Jeff Althoff (Delano). Althoff will be counted on to eat innings in a middle relief role after pitching well in limited action last season. “Jeff is a high-energy guy who brings a different look to hitters,” said the coaches. “Being a submarine type pitcher, the key for Jeff will be to throw strikes consistently.” Several highly touted new arms will push the many returnees. Highlighting the new arms is first year Logan Birr (St. Cloud), a St. Cloud Apollo graduate. Birr was a three-time All-Conference pick and a participant in the Lion’s All-Star Game his senior year. Birr’s decorated high school career included St. Cloud Times Player of the Year honors and a 15-strikeout no-hitter against rival Sauk Rapids-Rice. “Logan has potential to be among the top six pitchers on staff,” said the coaches. “If some weight and physical strength are added to an already live arm the sky is the limit.” Another first year player that is expected to contribute is Aaron Hoverson (Baldwin, Wis.). Hoverson was an Honorable Mention All-State pick and also played in the Lion’s All-Star and East/West Showdown showcases. The individual honors were plentiful throughout his prep career as well, as Hoverson was an All-Conference selection and his legion team’s most valuable pitcher three times apiece. “Aaron is a young pitcher whose mound presence is developed way beyond his years,” said the coaches. The other first year arm expected to contribute is Nick Anderson (Brainerd). Anderson was All-Conference his senior season, striking out a staggering 19 of the 26 batters he faced. “Nick has only scratched the surface in terms of his ability,” said the staff. “He needs to become more durable, but has a tremendous upside.”

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

“Matt is a bulldog-type pitcher that accepts any role asked of him,” said the coaches. “We need the same effort for continued success this season.”

The other two new pitchers are transfers Josh Boyer (Farmington, Mo.) and Bryant Koval (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Boyer is coming off a 5-3 season for Mineral Area College of Missouri in which he struck out 34 batters in 45 innings his sophomore year. “Josh brings a wealth of experience to the staff,” said the coaches. “If he can become more consistent in pounding the zone he will have a good shot at pitching a lot of innings.” Koval comes to the Huskies from the University of Northern Iowa where he red-shirted and saw no game action his second year. “Bryant is a tremendous worker,” said the coaches. “Like many young pitchers, he needs time to develop his mechanics and presence, but his great attitude will speed up that process.” Three other potential arms will have to wait a year to crack the staff, as Zac Sather (Coon Rapids), Ryan Stoll (Brooklyn Park) and Lucas Vossen (Cold Spring) will all sit out as red-shirts. CATCHING Four quality backstops are set to vie for time at catcher this year for the Huskies. Depth should not be an issue here either, as all four have the ability to log quality innings.

2009 S eason O utlook “I feel very comfortable with all our catchers’ ability to receive, block, throw, hit and most importantly call the game,” said assistant coach Adam Kampsen. “I believe that our pitcher/catcher relationships are very strong which will help our team play with a good tempo,” he added. Incumbent Nate Hammes (Lake Elmo) returns after playing in all 51 games last spring. Hammes, a junior transfer from Concordia-St. Paul, was a consistent offensive threat, finishing second on the team with a .347 average and nailed 28% of base stealers (11-28) from behind the dish. “Nate is a strong catcher and is a defensive wall behind the plate,” said the staff. “He could be even more consistent at the plate, but has a lot of good skills. Nate has a great shot to be penciled into the lineup as the everyday catcher.” Nicholls State transfer Jeremy Ische (Norwood-Young America) should provide another productive catcher in the mix for the Huskies. Ische spent his first two years at North Iowa Area Community College where he was a First Team All-Region pick as a freshman and a Preseason All-America selection before his sophomore year. Pat Wolard (Marinette, Wis.) will red-shirt after transferring from Riverland CC where he was a Preseason All-America and All-Region selection. “Pat is a big, strong-armed catcher that has power offensively,” said coaches. “He will red-shirt this spring and is expected to step into the starting lineup next year”

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

First year Joey Althoff will also be in the mix for playing time. Althoff spent the fall at South Dakota State after a decorated high school career in which he set several single-season and career Delano baseball records and earned a spot in the Lion’s All-Star Game. “The most important thing our catchers can do to be successful is communicate with our pitchers and control the flow of the game,” said Kampsen. “I have a ton of confidence in all the catchers and know that whoever wins the starting job will demand excellence from the other eight guys on the field.” INFIELD The infield took a hit losing All-Region selection Kyle Resser and All-NCC first baseman Ryan Sturm, but will return regular third baseman Sam Radbil (Milwaukee, Wis.) and team captain Joe Kroc (Austin) at short. “Our infielders have been working hard and focusing on improving their weaknesses and reinforcing their strengths,” said assistant coach Luke MacLean. Kroc, a captain and longest tenured Husky, made 23 starts at short and five at second base, providing a solid option in the middle of the Husky infield. The versatile Kroc has played in 60 career games for the Huskies. “Joe started last year at shortstop, and will most likely be the starter there in 2009,” said the coaching staff. “He is a great leader and his experience and maturity have really helped bring this team along,” the staff added. Radbil returns after seeing a majority of the time allotted at third base. He batted .311 with three home runs and 30 RBI. Radbil also showed an excellent eye at the plate, drawing 31 walks. “Sam started last year at third base, and is expected to do the same this year,” said the coaches. “He is a gap-to-gap hitter with great patience at the plate, and has a strong, accurate arm from third base.” Three underclassmen return to complement Kroc and Radbil. Joey Benke (Roseau) and Nate Laudenbach (St. Cloud) both return after a red-shirt year and sophomore Kent Koch (Loretto) is also back. Koch was used mainly as a late-inning bat and defensive replacement, batting .250 in 26 games played for SCSU. Lauren Green (Inglewood, Calif.) could also see some time at first base or in the designated hitter slot. Green hit four home runs in just 73 at-bats while posting 17 RBI and seven extra-base hits. “He is an extremely gifted all-around athlete with unlimited power and RBI potential,” said coaches. “Lauren will battle for a spot in the middle of the lineup at either first base or designated hitter.” Accompanying the familiar faces in the infield are three junior college transfers that will look to make an impact. Tyler Horning (Willmar) comes to the Huskies from Ridgewater CC, where he was a two-time All-Region, All-Conference and All-Division selection. Horning also played in two, NJCAA Division III World Series and compiled a .345 average with six home runs and 48 RBI over his two seasons with the Warriors. “Tyler has great speed and athleticism, and will battle for one of the middle infield spots on the roster this year,” said the coaches. Beau Musgjerd (Rogers) and Kyle Gold (Apple Valley) account for the other two JUCO infielders. Musgjerd had his way with MCCC pitching the last two seasons, as he was First Team All-America and was Region XIII and Conference Player of the Year. His numbers proved him worthy, as he batted .412 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in two years.

2009 S eason O utlook “Beau is a power hitting first basemen with gap-to-gap power,” said the staff. “He has the potential to be a consistent home run threat, and will battle for playing time at first base.” Gold spent two seasons at North Iowa Area Community College playing second base for coach Todd Rima. After limited action his freshman season, Gold earned the role as the Trojans regular second baseman in 2008. “Kyle is a great contact hitter with great defensive habits,” said the staff. “Kyle will battle for the starting position at second base this year.” Incoming first year players Travis Cariveau (Sauk Rapids), Steve Rindelaub (St. Cloud) and Phil Imholte (St. Cloud) will all red-shirt. The trio played in the Minnesota Lion’s All-Star Game this summer and were All-State picks, with Imholte earning his second honor. OUTFIELD

“One of the strengths of the 2009 Husky baseball squad should be the outfield,” said assistant coach Ken Picha. “With the abundance of experience, and with the addition of transfers and freshmen, there will be a lot of depth and talent out there,” Picha added. Nate Johnson was one of the premier base-stealers in the NCC last season, finishing second in the league with 18 in 22 attempts. A catalyst at the top of the lineup, he also was second on the team in runs with 35. “Nate is a standout wide receiver on the Huskies football team, who possesses tremendous speed and athleticism,” said the coaches. “He can change the game with his speed both offensively and defensively, and will start in centerfield for us.” Mic Johnson played a majority of his games in right field, but also saw action at first base. Johnson played in 45 of the team’s 51 games, batting at a .273 clip with six homers, 26 RBI and five stolen bases. “Mic has power to all areas of the field and is a versatile player who is outstanding at multiple positions,” said the coaching staff. Several players will be vying for the third outfield spot, as Brandon Peyer (Reedsburg, Wis.), Tyler Maher (Rockford), Jared Johnson (Eagan) and Jeff Heuer (Brooklyn Park) will battle for it. Peyer was the only one not to red-shirt last season as he played in 33 games, bating .278 in the process. “Brandon is a very athletic outfielder that runs well and has a good bat and his work ethic is second to none,” said the coaches. Maher red-shirted in ’08 after a season at Central Lakes College, where he was First Team All-Conference and an AllState pick, while Jared Johnson played in 13 games his freshman campaign of 2007 before sitting out last season. Heuer played his freshman season at Cardinal Stritch University where he stroked a .380 average.

St. Cloud State University Baseball 2009

A plethora of outfielders will compete to roam the wide-open spaces of Faber Field, including six players from the 2008 squad. Highlighting that gang is a pair of Johnsons in the form of Nate (Austin) and Mic (Fergus Falls).

“Jeff is a versatile player who can play first base or the outfield,” the coaches said. “He will battle for time at first base or in the outfield.” The lone newcomer to the outfield is transfer Tom Erpenbach (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Erpenbach comes to SCSU from Muscatine CC, where he lettered twice for the Cardinals. “Tom has the ability to cover a lot of ground in the outfield and to be an impact player offensively,” said the coaching staff. “He will need to make the necessary adjustments to his swing to be effective this season.” Red-shirting will be first year Brian Hansen (Cold Spring). Hansen was an All-Area selection for ROCORI High last year and played in the Lion’s All-Star Game. “Brian has a strong arm and great bat. He is very athletic and has a very high ceiling. “Brian will red-shirt this season, but big things are expected of him in the seasons to come,” said coaches. “The three outfield positions will see a great deal of competition for playing time,” said Picha. “We as a staff will be looking for players to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic fundamentals of outfield play and for players with a balance of speed and power to fill these positions.”

H usky S cholarships Gregory J. Berling Memorial Scholarship

Joe and Marie Glatzmaier Family Baseball Scholarship

Jerry and Kit Henkemeyer Baseball Athletic Opportunity Grant

The Gregory J. Berling Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to studentathletes in the St. Cloud State University baseball program. The basic purpose is to motivate recipients in academic achievement while nurturing their athletic talents and capabilities. Gregory J. Berling graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1976. He was a member of the National Honor Society and lettered in baseball and hockey. From 1977 to 1980 he attended St. Cloud State and was a pitcher and outfielder for the Huskies and was elected co-captain of the team in 1979. He was named to the allconference team in 1978. Greg was married to Christine Vierzba in 1981. He received a B.A. in biology from Logan Chiropractic College in 1985 and his Doctor of Chiropractic in 1986. He established the Hammer Lane Chiropractic Office in Stockton, California, in 1987. A son, Stephen Lee, was born in 1988. Greg Berling was killed in a helicopter accident April 20, 1989. This endowment was established by Greg's parents, John and Patricia Berling. Former players, coaches, and friends of SCSU baseball have contributed to this fund.

The Joe and Marie Glatzmaier Family Baseball Scholarship will be awarded to a member in good standing of an SCSU intercollegiate baseball team, who is a graduate of a Stearns County high school. The award was established by the family of Joe and Marie Glatzmaier of Albany. The Glatzmaier’s have ten children, seven of whom attended SCSU for at least one year. The Glatzmaier name was synonymous with baseball in Stearns County from the 30’s to the 70’s. Three of the sons played for St. Cloud State team’s in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The Glatzmaier family feels good about the education and athletic opportunities they received at St. Cloud State and feel that the scholarship fund is one way to give back to a university that has meant a great deal to them. This scholarship honors their parents who didn’t have the opportunity to attend the university.

The Jerry and Kit Henkemeyer Baseball Athletic Opportunity Grant was established to encourage high school seniors who are student-athletes in baseball both to attend St. Cloud State University and to participate in the varsity baseball program. Jerry and Kit have been supporters of St. Cloud University in many ways. When Jerry was an undergraduate, he participated in the varsity baseball program. Jerry graduated in 1970, with a B.S. degree in physical education. He also took graduate courses in the Special Education Masters Program. Following graduation, Jerry was employed by the St. Cloud School District as a special education teacher. Jerry purchased Park Refuse Service in 1978, and operated it together with the St. Cloud Transfer Station until its sale in 1989. Kit graduated from SCSU in 1969, with a B.A. in sociology. She worked for Franklin Manufacturing for several years after graduation. Jerry and Kit are active supporters of the SCSU Athletic Program and attend many athletic events.

The Hoelscher Family Pitching Scholarship will be awarded annually to oelscher amily a pitcher in good standing on the SCSU intercollegiate baseball team. itching This scholarship was established cholarship by Gerard and Leslie Hoelscher of Alexandria, husband and wife alumni of St. Cloud State University. Gerard and Leslie both earned Bachelor of Science degrees from SCSU in the late 1970s. While attending SCSU, Gerard was an infielder on the baseball team. Their three sons Mike, Matt and Nathan also attended SCSU and pitched for the Huskies. The Hoelscher family continues to have strong connections to the University. They established this scholarship to give back to the university that has been so good to them.
