INTRODUCTION

As a conscience and outgoing individual, I combined my interests for thrill seeking and charity by participating in a sponsored skydiving and mountaineering event which I summited, Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isle for Shelter Homeless Charity. I further developed my passion for social issues in my final year project, which I choose my collaborating clients of Coventry City Council and the Cyrenians Homeless Charity, to focus on the relationship between a city’s architects and the homeless community, so that a relationship that once was negative in the form of Hostile Architecture can be redefined. The building I have designed is an architectural response which juxtaposes the elements of Hostile Architecture but however uses its materiality in a different language, by creating a welcoming space previously homeless people to live, educate and work. This final year project secured me a Design of the Year Award and RIBA Excellence in Education Award. I was also chosen to exhibit my work at the New Designers 2018 Graduate show at the Islington Design Centre, London in July.

I believe myself to work well within a team with strong leadership skills as I led a team of students from a multitude of disciplines such as civil engineering, quantity surveying, building services and architectural technology in an integrated project module at my university which consisted of redesigning an existing university building. This simulation of a real-world environment developed my organisational skills and time management as I was the sole architecture student within the team and was responsible for delegating tasks while directing the design and fulfilling the role of BIM Manager. My love for travelling has encouraged my open-mindedness to other cultures, fuelling my creativity which I project onto my work. I secured a work placement in Seville, Spain as an architectural assistant at Hermann Tschernko, exposing myself to a different culture and advancing my language skills. Additionally, during my travels to St Petersburg, Russia, I conceived my academic dissertation subject which focused on the unbuilt conceptual architecture of the Russian Revolution and its influence on the contemporary architectural design process which I achieved a first-class grade.

While undertaking the ‘Drawing and Portfolio’ program at the University of the Arts London (UAL) I developed a keen eye for detail during the life drawing sessions for 6 weeks. I took initiative during the London Festival of Architecture in June by attending open studio events which I spoke to senior architects and designers at Perkins + Will, Grimshaw Architects, Fletcher and Priest and MAKE architects just to name a few, to better understand which practice I would thrive in.

Cities in the past and in the modern age have been design in such a manner to include and provide for its people meanwhile excluding others. These cities are deliberately designed to drive out what is perceived as negative behaviour such as loitering, skateboarding and rough sleepers. However, in turn, this design unintentionally disregards parts of the public especially vulnerable members of the community such as seniors, people with disabilities and children. With my Clients of Coventry City Council and the Cyrians Homeless Charity Group, the relationship between a city’s urban designers and architects and the homeless community that was once negative can be redefined. The Building with be an architectural response which juxtaposes the elements of Hostile architecture but however uses it materiality in a different language. By creating a welcoming space for people from all walks of life and reflecting the homelessness experience we can have a building which is a symbol of hope to the homeless and a symbol of inclusivity to the public. A mixture of intimate spaces with open and transparent spaces can provide interaction and a change in emotion for the building user and the public. The name of the building (The Lighthouse Centre) conveys hope, guidance and resilience to anyone who feel ‘lost at sea’ in the ocean of life. The spaces inside the building will be generous and open providing the users large circulation space without being too open. The movement within the building will be guided towards the central atrium which will act as an intersection for not only the circulation path but also where the programs combine and meet. Above, the atrium will be where collaborative learning can happen and overlook the activity of the space below. This shared space will extent to the surrounding landscape with canopies and sheltering hubs which people will congregate and enhance social interaction. The façade and building will reflect the materials used in Hostile Architecture and the forms of discomfort and the defensive nature of these urban furniture will be used in a positive and inviting manner.

Homelessness can affect all of us. Throughout life we go experience periods of homelessness due to a multitude of reasons, some temporarily and some others experience it on a long term. Even in everyday life while we travel from one destination to another we seek shelter from the elements or outdoors. This period of the travel between two shelters can be a form of homelessness.

The fundamental issues the education board raised at the client meetings were lack of classroom space for new admissions, lack of aesthetic appeal of the kindergarten building and outdoor connections between the school building complex. We proposed a new floor vertical expansion to provide more classroom space to the kindergarten as well as an outdoor recreational terrace for outdoor activities. Additional landscaping and a new school building improved the aesthetic appeal of the school entrance and improved cohesion between the spaces.

The basilica of san vitale is a historically preserved church which is also a heritage listed building located in the ravenna province in italy. the design and layout of the structure is of christian byzantine origin and conforms to traditional western churches. the upper half of the building is elevated from the structure and is enclosed and concealed with a dome which itself is covered by a pyramid timber pitched roof. the simplicity of the large arches allows the individuals to easily flow through from the ambulatories and the central section. one could describe the church to have geometric rhythm.
