Section 1: Reading Comprehension

( 30 points)

Passage 1: Read the text about Comfort Zone and complete the tasks below: (10 points) A: Your comfort zone, is as the name suggests, the area where you feel comfortable. We all have one, whether we know it or not: it's the set of routines and known abilities that make you feel safe because we're confident that we can manage and are unlikely to be challenged by anything unexpected or worrying. Staying inside your comfort zone has many benefits, especially at the time when you're feeling under stress. B: On the other hand, it's a good idea to do things that are outside your comfort zone. Many studies have shown that an important factor in helping people feel positive about themselves is the feeling that they are developing and making progress in their lives. You won’t reach your potentials if you only do what you are able to do. C: Unfortunately, people often stuck in their comfort zones and don't feel able to try different things. There are various possible reasons for this. They may be afraid of failing or unsure how to begin. Whatever the reason may be, it's sometimes necessary to force yourself to do something you'd rather not do. Once you've made the effort, though, the door to new experiences will open and you'll probably wonder why you thought it was a problem.

A: Choose the best title for each paragraph: 1. One step forward to make change.

Passage 2 Read the text about Making friends and complete the tasks below: ( 10 points) As someone who has made a lot of friends via the internet, I'm tired of hearing that they're not 'real friends'. The argument seems to be that you can never really know someone unless you've actually met them. The fact is, though, that meeting someone is no guarantee that they're who they say they are. I've met lots of people whose real character and intensions turned out to be different from those first presented. In fact, I regard some people I've met online as my closest friends. We actually have many interests in common, which is why we got together in the first place. Compare this with people I met at school and haven't seen or contacted for nearly twenty years, or people I know at work, I'm supposed to think of these as 'real friends', and the one I really chat to nearly every day as just 'internet friends'. I'm told that these Internet friends are somehow less real, which doesn't make sense. In my experience, friendships made online are just as real as the ones we happened to make face to face.

A: Decide whether the statements are true or false. ( 4 points) 1. The writer in paragraph one agrees that it is actually important to meet a person to know who he is. 2. The writer suggests that online friendships are less real than the ones we meet face to face.

Read the text and complete the tasks below: ( 10 points)

There is bad news for students who like to use their mobile phones while they study. New research shows that students do not learn very well when they are texting and checking their social media accounts. Researchers looked at 145 American university students in the classroom. Some of the students used their mobile phones during class, while the others had their phones switched off. The head researcher, Dr Jeffrey Kuznekoff, said students who did not use their mobile phones while the teacher was talking got higher scores on tests they took at the end of the class. Kuznekoff said that one of the biggest challenges teachers have in the classroom is the non-stop battle of keeping students working. He said many students felt they needed to be online and checking messages even when they had important work to do in class. The researchers said it is very common for students to be physically present in class, but mentally absent because they are using their mobiles. Kuznekoff said teachers were fighting a "losing battle" because students were more interested in social media than learning. The London School of Economics did a study in England and found that test scores increased by six per cent after mobile phones were banned in class.
