People like this must be common, because many other languages, mostly European, have exactly the same idiom. Other languages, like Russian, talk about someone being a ‘white crow’ (crows being birds that are 5 nearly always black). Real black sheep are rather rare. From a farmer’s point of view, black wool couldn’t be changed into different colours, so it was seen as worthless. As a result, farmers used to be disappointed when, by chance, their white sheep sometimes had a baby with black wool. So if a family had a ‘black sheep’, it was definitely thought to be something undesirable. Nowadays, 10 though, the phrase has lost some of its negative meaning. This is probably because people don’t worry as much as they used to if someone is a bit different from normal. In fact, some people even think of it as an advantage: it means that the person has a more exciting life than most others, who just follow the rules and don’t take risks. Q1- Complete the following sentences with a maximum of two words from the text. 1- The idea of being a 'black sheep' seems to be quite ………………….in European countries. 2- Several languages have an………………………similar to the English phrase 'black sheep'. 3- In real life, however, black sheep are not common, in fact, they are ………… …………. 4- Black wool is …………………….., so farmers regard it as ………………………… 5- The life of 'black sheep' may be more exciting because they are more likely to ………. ……. Some might guess Hollywood, where some of the richest and most famous movie stars have their homes. Others might think of New York City, or Dubai. But they would all be wrong, because this is a trick question. The most expensive house isn’t even properly located on Earth. It’s the International 5 Space Station (ISS), which is circling in orbit above us right now. The cost to build this station, which is roughly the size of a football field, is around 150 billion dollars. Many different governments cooperated in order to plan and build the ISS, including the USA, Russia, Japan, Canada, and Europe. The countries agreed on three important purposes for their joint project: to support scientific research, to help astronauts continue to explore space, 10 and to educate the public. Construction began in 1998, the countries used their spacecraft to send the parts for the ISS, little by little, into space. First came the operating systems and hardware.
