THE HIVE

NOT THE ‘NOAH’ YOU KNOW, BUT IT’S GOOD While Noah is jumped by an unauthorized intruder on the ark, fighting him to the death after one of his sons has turned against him, another son’s supposedly barren wife is giving birth to twins, whom Noah vows to kill because God has decreed that everything on Earth is evil and must parish. “Noah,” the movie, is not a story of the world’s most famous flood that the Bible describes. Yet, it is a spectacular film, well acted, with impressive special effects and an intriguing plot that although far from biblical description still leaves considerable opportunity for renewing one’s faith and beliefs. This is not your father or grandfather’s Noah. Some, especially those who take the Bible very literally, will be offended. Watching the film caused me to go back to Genesis (returning to the Bible is not something most movies trigger) to compare the original with Hollywood’s version. Since the Bible is short on details of exactly what happened during those 40 days and nights along with months afterward before land was again possible, I understand why director Darren Aronofsky had to become creative to get a nearly two-and-a-halfhour show. There are numerous embellishments to the Bible story, starting with the first sentence in this review. Most difficult for me to accept

were the Transformer-like “Watchers,” computer-generated giants that looked more like something out of “Star Wars.” They help Noah build the ark (their weight atop the structure would have surely crushed the wooden ark in real life) and protect the family when the remaining sinners try to rush the ark to avoid destruction. But as the movie unfolds, Noah’s willingness to follow God and his faith to eventually allow humans along with animals and plants to repopulate the earth was deeply moving and an affirmation of God’s grace. Russell Crowe does such a great job portraying Noah that it is hard to imagine anyone else. The supporting cast of Jen-

nifer Connolly (Noah’s wife), Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins is also believable. The director’s use of extreme facial close-ups not only of Noah but other characters is among the film’s strengths. If you are looking for a movie that is cut from the cloth of “Son of God” or “The Passion of the Christ,” you will probably be disappointed, even angry. But if your faith is broad enough to accept some of Hollywood’s flare and garnish, you could be delighted with this film, finding it both entertaining and inspirational. Three and a half stars for “Noah,” now showing in Hutchinson. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

CHECK OUT A 50-MILER AT KANOPOLIS STATE PARK MARQUETTE – I have to admit, this Road Trip isn’t for everyone. But it would sure be fun to watch. The Kansas UltraRunner Society is having its annual Rockin’ K Ultramarathon Trail Run. The sane bunch will stick with the marathon, but a brave few will try a 50-mile course through Kanopolis Reservoir, state park and Smoky Hill Wildlife Area. Yes. I said 50! I’ve done the Run for the Rocks half-marathon twice. I walked like a penguin both times for two days, so I can only imagine doing almost four of those in a row. So more power to these elite runners. This race is one time that runners can dodge horse droppings on the horses-only portion of the trail. They should, however, avoid closed trails. In this race, runners should keep track of their location. If they get lost, there might a search crew sent out. However, runners are asked to backtrack until they find a marker. During the race, runners are asked to climb over barbed-wire fences that are covered in army blankets. Anyone who wants to see these brave souls compete in the marathon or ultramarathon should go to Kanopolis State Park on Saturday. The race starts at 7 a.m. Don’t forget to pay the park entry fee or you will be ticketed. For more information, visit www.ksultrarunners.org. KANSAS McPherson County

‘MOTHER SUPERIOR’ PRESERVES FUN OF ’60S FILM BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee ryanc@hutchnews.com

Steve Wilson fondly remembers watching “The Trouble with Angels.” At the time, he didn’t know much about the 1966 film starring Haley Mills and Rosalind Russell other than it made him laugh. “It was hilarious,” Wilson recalled this week. “It was a really good comedy.” He later would learn that the film was based on the book “Life with Mother Superior” by Jane Trahey, and this week Wilson will be directing a play adaptation of the book as it is performed for the first time by the Family Community Theatre. The story is semi-biographical and follows the high jinks of a group of new students – led by Mary Clancey (played by Jocelyn Brady) and Jane Moore (Whitney White) – at the strict St. Mark’s Academy, a Catholic school for girls headed by the formidable Mother Superior (Betsy Geddes). Although it originally takes place during the 1930s, Wilson reset the story to the ’50s so a wider audience can relate to it. Not surprisingly, the cast is heavy on young female actors – 16, to be exact – who come from 11 area schools. In total, there are 25 females in the cast. There are two male roles in “Mother Superior,” but Wilson said neither is sizable – one of the parts has just one line. Wilson said the largest challenge in getting the show ready has been convincing the girls to loosen up on stage and act naturally, as if they were in their own school and not the fictional St. Mark’s. Throughout rehearsals, he said, their tendency has been to move and deliver their lines “real stiff.” Another potential problem was the number of

JOIN THE CAST Auditions for “Tarzan,” the final show in the Family Community Theatre’s 25th season, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Flag Theatre. The show will be performed June 5-8.

IF YOU GO WHAT: “Life with Mother Superior” WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday WHERE: Flag Theatre, 310 N. Employing standard scene-changing techniques of bringing on and taking off various props and changing out background scenery would have caused too many

delays and broken the flow of the acting, Wilson said. Instead, a pair of projectors flanking the stage will be used to create digital scenery using period photographs Wilson found on the Internet. Despite the youthfulness of the cast, there were never any problems keeping everyone in line. “Usually when you’re working with young people, it’s hard to keep them focused,” Wilson said, “but these have been really conscientious. “Actually, it’s been one of the best casts, as far as following directions, that I’ve ever had.” The show is considered appropriate for all ages, and although life today has changed drastically from the time the story was written, Wilson said the humor present in the script is timeless. “It’s just something to come and enjoy,” he said. “It’s about how funny life really can be.”

Brady whispers a secret plan into White's ear as Geddes listens Tuesday during a rehearsal for the Family Community Theatre’s production of “Life with Mother Superior.”

PIXIES STILL SHUGGING, SAY THE BEST IS YET TO COME BY LUIS ANDRES HENAO Associated Press

SANTIAGO, Chile – They inspired generations of musicians worldwide, served as the blueprint for countless rock bands, including Nirvana, and got a second life as reunited alternative rock idols. Now, the Pixies say they’re forging ahead while still looking for a new sound. The Boston quartet released their debut, the EP “Come on Pilgrim,” in 1987. Their college-radio hits include “Monkey Gone to

Heaven,” “Here Comes Your Man” and “Where is My Mind.” They disbanded in the early 1990s and reunited in 2004. Since then the band had released only one song, “Bam Thwok,” in 2004. But that changed in June, when a video for a new single, “Bagboy,” showed up online unannounced. A few weeks later, the band surprised fans again with an online collection of four new songs released under the name “EP-1” and the announcement of a global tour.

Have they found the Pixies sound they want? “Not yet. That’s still to come,” lead singer Charles Thompson, who goes by the name Black Francis, told The Associated Press behind the scenes at the Lollapalooza rock festival in Chile. “Rome was not built in a day. I think we need a little more time to really create something that’s absolutely different but we’re in the process. With this record, we’re moving in that direction.” The Pixies hired Argentine

bassist Paz Lechantin in December after Kim Shattuck was fired after less than five months on the job. She had replaced beloved long-time bassist Kim Deal who quit the Pixies in June after more than 25 years with the band. “I like the new gal, she’s smart, funny, plays really good bass, she surfs, she sings great, she’s bilingual,” Thompson said. “And she makes us laugh,” guitarist Joey Santiago chimed in. “She feels like home, she was meant to be with us.”

Drummer David Lovering said she’s also pushing him to continue learning: “She is making me play better. She is a great bass player, and I don’t want to embarrass myself.”

Thompson said the band plans to tour more, and he especially hopes to visit Paraguay because he admires Agustin Barrios, the late Paraguayan classical guitarist and composer.
