COMMUNITY, COLLABORATION AT THE HEART OF YOUNG GALLERY’S EFFORTS Visitors are seen inside Artlandia as artists engage in the Paint and Switch Art Shuffle during Third Thursday last March. Owner Jennifer Randall said she hopes events at the gallery inspire and bring together members of the community.

BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee

ryanc@hutchnews.com Jennifer Randall calls it an “art incubator,” but her airy gallery on West Avenue B is so much more than that in her eyes. Artlandia – as she has dubbed the space – often is a hub of activity during the Third Thursday events she organizes every month, welcoming the public into its spartan but comfy confines to mingle while being treated to a sample of the city’s creative energies. But that’s just the tip of the paint brush in terms of its potential. Under its refurbished name, Artlandia has only been around for about a year. Its previous incarnation, Gallery 7, also occupied the site before and after a long stint on Main Street. But regardless of where it is or what it’s called, Randall said she’s always wanted to provide “a community space that could be accessed by various kinds of people.”

That idea was at the forefront when the building underwent recent renovations, as Randall made sure to include room for artist studios and creative work spaces that can be rented out as needed. Current clients include graphic designer Jason Yoder, textile artist Jena Karam and photographer Kalene Nisly. “For many years, I’ve always like the idea of different artists coming together,” Randall said this week during a call from her native home of California. Even the appellation denotes her communitycentric vision. Derived after a long online conversation with a friend during which the two were getting “completely goofy coming up with names,” Artlandia bubbled to the front of Randall’s mind. “As soon as I typed it, it was like, ‘Oh, that’s it,’ ” she said. To her, the name had a fun and whimsical feel. “It just sounded like this place where anything can happen,” Randall said. “It sort of encompassed more

than just a gallery. It has, like, a broader-spectrum sound to it.” In the past year, the gallery has housed not only a variety of art exhibits across a range of styles but also many different public events, like last month’s Hope for the Holidays charity concert. Third Thursday events held there typically incorporate an interactive element for visitors, whether that’s making crafts, taking pictures or engaging in a competition. One of Randall’s favorite activities took place in March. Called the Paint and Switch Art Shuffle, it featured five local artists who rotated between five canvasses to work together in creating original paintings before the audience’s eyes. “I think people loved to see what was happening and the artists’ creative process,” Randall said. “It was just very fun and lively.” She readily admits that the art world can come off as pretentious or exclusive, but her goal is to break down those notions and foster a stronger bond with the public. “(Art) exposes the community to things that, maybe, they haven’t seen before,” she said. “I think it takes away that barrier and people become more open to it. The more exposure they have, per se, the more comfortable they are with it in their own lives. “I can only see it helping people.” She’d like to expand those opportunities, too, as the next year unfolds. Some of her ideas include bringing in more workshops, hosting group art shows and art forums for artists to talk about their work, and expanding hours so the gallery is open all week. “Whatever the needs are that need to be met, I would like to see it evolve in that direction,” Randall said.
