BAND PUT AUDIENCE IN THE CHRISTMAS ‘SWING’ REVIEW The lights blinked three times and the crowd drifted from the concession area to their seats. As the house lights went down, nine dapper gentlemen in vintage suits and hats took to the stage. Everyone held their breath, and then ... it began – an explosion of music and sound that had everyone rocking in their seats. The evening started off with the song “Rockabilly Christmas,” which was quickly turned into a medley of Christmas standards. It included “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” played on saxophone, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “The Night Before Christmas.” These weren’t your standard songs; Big Bad Voodoo Daddy put their own spin on all of them and worked their band name into the lyrics. Then we heard the entire song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” on the trumpet, which was amazing. The amount of air that had to be produced to get such overwhelming sound to come out of that small brass instrument was phenomenal. I wondered how the musician had the strength to walk back to his position on the stage after that performance. Then we heard “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in its

entirety, complete with bells. And it only got better from there, if that’s possible. Walking into The Orpheum Theatre in Wichita is such a treat. It’s a lovely old theater. The neon sign out front is a wonderful welcome, along with the lobby and concession area – simply beautiful. Once you enter the theater, it’s clear this is a work in progress. But what a great venue to see a class act like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in their vintage apparel rocking the stage. LYDIA LOWE Hutchinson

Stage 9 seeks four ‘Trojan Women’ for year’s 1st presentation BY THE BEE STAFF
Stage 9 again is seeking aid from theatrically inclined citizens as it continues preparations for the commencement of its 100th anniversary season. While it was just earlier this month that the Hutchinson organization held auditions for its first full production, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” a new set of tryouts will
be held Sunday – from 6 to 9 p.m. at 9 S. Main St. – for a special production of “The Trojan Women.” The classic Greek tragedy by Euripides depicts what befalls a group of women from Troy – former queen Hecuba; her daughter Cassandra, who can foresee future events, and daughter-inlaw Andromache; and the abducted Spartan queen Helen – after the city’s sacking by the Greek army.
The story’s telling is a special event on the Stage 9 schedule, paying tribute to the first production performed in 1916 when the group was part of the Hutchinson Women’s Club. To commemorate the occasion, it will be produced as a modern public reading and will be presented two nights only: Jan 22-23. According to a news release, the story is unique in its limited plot and action, and the reading will attempt to emphasize the tension that surrounds the women after their husbands have been slaughtered, their children seized from them, and as a sense of their own mortality looms. Roles are available for four women. Prospective actors are asked to bring to auditions copies of their schedule with possible conflicts to rehearsals, which typically occur four or five times a week on weekday evenings or Sunday afternoons. For more information about “The Trojan Women” and other shows in the 2016 season, visit www.stage9hutch.com.

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? VENUES PLAN FILMS ON, ABOUT HOLIDAY BY THE BEE STAFF
Dreaming of a white Christmas? Better luck next year. For those yearning for a snowy Yuletide scene, your best bet is a trip to the movies, and there are options aplenty for taking in a flick during the winter break. On Christmas night, Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre is screening the underappreciated holiday classic “Gremlins.” The 1984 comedy/horror mash-up is part of the Fox’s Delos V. Smith Film Series and will be screened at 7:30 p.m. It may not yet have established as much Christmas cred as “It’s a Wonderful Life” or “Miracle on 34th Street,” but who can forget these iconic moments: Frances Lee McCain, who plays protagonist Billy Peltzer’s mom, getting ambushed by one of the little, green monsters hiding inside a Christmas tree, or a group of hat-and-scarf-clad gremlin carolers serenading a terrified Mrs. Deagle. And let’s not forget, cute and cuddly Gizmo came to Kingston Falls as a Christmas gift from Billy’s dad. Tickets are $4 each. Get them by calling (620) 663-1981, visiting www. hutchinsonfox.com or dropping by the box office at 18 E. First Ave. The Cosmosphere has been showing the animated tale “The Polar Express,” featuring the voice work of Tom Hanks. Starting Saturday, it will run every night at 7 through Jan. 3. In the movie, a young boy embarks on a journey of self-discovery when he boards a magical train bound for Santa’s home at the North Pole. Tickets are priced at $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors age 60 and older, as well as for children between the ages of 4 and 12, and free for kids 3 and younger. To get a seat, visit the museum at 1100 N. Plum St., or call (800) 397-0330, ext. 312. And while it may not be offering holiday movies, per se, the B&B Mall 8 Theatre is open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Playing Thursday are recent releases like the Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home,” the blockbuster “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” high-pitched sequel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,” and “Sisters,” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, as well as “In the Heart of the Sea” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” in their final showings. On Friday, catch new options like the Will Smith football drama “Concussion,” a re-imagining of the 1991 surfing/ robbery action movie “Point Break,” and “Joy,” which reunites Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper alongside Robert De Niro. For show times, visit www.bbtheatres.com or call (620) 669-8510.

OPERA FAVORITES WILL RETURN TO WICHITA IN 2016 BY THE BEE STAFF
“Star Wars” may be the current movie theater heavy-hitter, but Wichita Grand Opera is bringing blockbusters of its own to audiences in the coming year. Citing demand from the public, the company is reviving several productions from its past to fill the 2016 season at Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center. “According to our audience, it has been far too long since the operas we’ve scheduled this season have appeared on WGO’s stage,” WGO President and CEO Parvan Bakardiev said in a news release. “Whether they were instant hits like “Rigoletto” and “The Pirates of Penzance,” or took a little longer to catch on like “La bohème,” music from these operas is everywhere. You may not think you’re an opera fan, but I guarantee you’ll catch yourself humming along.” To start, though, WGO is welcoming back the Russian National Ballet

Fair in the first ticketed Opera on the Lake event since 2003. Featuring the fast-paced “I Am The Very Model of a Modern MajorGeneral,” the show last was performed in 2008. The action takes a three-month hiatus during the summer months, returning with a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” which last graced the Wichita stage in 2010 and 2004. An emotional roller coaster, the story is based on a play by Victory Hugo, author of “Les Misérables” and “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” and follows a deformed court jester working in the service of a promiscuous duke. Its signature song, “La donna è mobile,” is instantly recognizable.
DOWNTOWN GALA TO CELEBRATE NEW YEAR IN STYLE BY THE BEE STAFF
It’s all the swanky pomp of a New York City New Year’s Eve bash without having to travel across the country. Main Street Event, along with Details and dB extreme, will ring in the new year in grand fashion Dec. 31 – and you’re invited. The space at 2 N. Main St. will be decked to the nines for the shindig, which will feature a live DJ, party favors, a photo booth, free hors d’oeuvres and for-sale alcoholic drinks, and a toast when the clock strikes 12. The first 200 people or couples will receive a complimentary 4-by-6 photo and frame. Arrive in style with the help of No Problimo limousine services before walking the red carpet. Guests must be at least 21 years old. Party or club attire – including nice jeans – is recommended, although tuxedos and formal gowns are welcome. The evening begins at 8 p.m. and will commence at 1 a.m. For guaranteed seating, take advantage of the “Ultimate Party Pack.” At a cost of $700, plus fees, 10 people will be granted limo

They may be purchased, along with limo reservations, at http://hutch.news/ NewYear, as well as at Details, 6 S. Main St.

And for those unable to attend in Wichita, a date at the Carlsen Center in Overland Park will follow two weeks later. Season subscriptions are available now, with options to see two, three or all four shows. Prices range from $63 to $255. Also are available are dinner, preview and backstage tour packages. Through a smartphone app, you see whether the meal is fresh, starting to spoil or spoiled. The device won’t detect the presence of gastroenteritis from bacteria such as salmonella or e. coli, so make sure you cook your food sufficiently, even if it’s deemed fresh. Online: http://myfoodsniffer.com *** HAN SOLO FRIDGE ($160) Nothing says chill like Han Solo frozen in carbonite. This mini fridge’s front door features a 3-D rendering of a frosty Han and holds 18 canned beverages. The fridge can switch between cold and warm modes, but sadly a dreamy 1980s Harrison Ford doesn’t collapse at your feet when you switch the heat on. The fridge door does, however, give off the same eerie red glow that appeared when Princess Leia thawed him out in “Return of the Jedi.” Want something more contemporary? ThinkGeek also sells a tiny $70 mini fridge that holds just a six-pack.

This photo provided by ThinkGeek shows the Han Solo Fridge. This mini fridge’s front door features a 3-D rendering of a frosty Han and holds 18 canned beverages. Whether you’re shopping for a Trekkie, a tech savvy fisherman or a paranoid chef, gadget gifts abound this year.
It looks like the BB-8 droid from the new “Star Wars” movie. Online: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1caf *** “STAR TREK” PHASER UNIVERSAL REMOTE REPLICA ($150) “Star Wars” is all the rage now, with hundreds of products tied to the new movie. But Trekkies need their toys, too. For the Captain Kirk in your life, this universal remote has been recreated with 3-D scans of Star Trek props. You operate this remote using motion rather than buttons. It combines the small mini phaser and the larger pistol-shaped phaser models used as weapons on “Star Trek.” The smaller one can be used separately or inserted into the larger phaser, which has a pistolgrip base.
This undated photo provided by The Wand Company shows the Star Trek Phaser Remote Replica.
Beam strengths can be customized, and the remote makes a variety of phaser firing sounds. A metal stand with a hidden magnet is included, making the phaser easy to grab if your home is overrun by Tribbles, or you just need to change the channel. Online: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1db4 *** IBOBBER ($100) Hooking Moby Dick is easier when you’ve got portable sonar on your side. The iBobber fish finder
*** MISTLETOE DRONE ($70) What’s a gift guide for geeks without some kind of drone? Even better, this drone can act as a remotecontrolled wingman for those looking for a holiday smooch. The mistletoe drone hovers with a pair of counter-rotating rotors. An infrared remote provides throttle and directional control. For a big party, up to 20 of these drones can be flown independently without radio interference problems. The drone’s rechargeable battery provides up to five minutes of flight and takes 30 minutes to charge through its remote. When controlling it, just make sure the drone ends up over the right person. A mistake can be disastrous.
