‘GOD’S NOT DEAD’ INSPIRES, BUT FORGET ‘CAPTAIN’ SEQUEL This is one of the best Christian movies in several years. Keep in mind, not everyone likes “Christian” movies, but for those who do, “God’s Not Dead” is excellent and deserving of 3½ stars. Since the largely secular movie reviewers and major media who preview and write about films seldom give “Christian” movies the time of day, let alone a thumbs-up, don’t be surprised if you don’t read or hear a lot about this film. But the church community, understandably critical of sex, violence and far-fetched themes that regularly come out of Hollywood, need to support this type of film if they want more of the positive and less of the negative on future screens. Everything that “Noah” isn’t, from a biblical and Christian point of view, “God’s Not Dead” achieves. It’s told with good, believable acting, excellent editing, and it combines eight or more stories into one film, with numerous subplots, in addition to the basic story about a Christian college student who challenges his atheist professor by refusing to sign a paper saying “God is Dead” so that the prof, who has a deep secret why he has turned against believing, can get on with his philosophy classes.
The series of stories is told in a style aimed for teenagers and young college students but is presented in a way that holds interest for adults as well. Worked into the plots are a popular Christian rock group, Newsboys, “Duck Dynasty’s” Willie Robertson and even a brief iPhone appearance from Franklin Graham. Not only is this a good movie for parents and their teens to see together, but it’s excellent for church groups and follow-up discussions. The same can certainly be said for the previously reviewed “Noah,” which overall I liked, but in a much different kind of way. As credits roll at the end, there is a lengthy list of colleges where Christian-associated legal groups went to court against some of the nation’s better-known universities to secure the rights of Christian students to express their thoughts and beliefs just as much as the liberal, often Christdenying faculty who seem to dominate many schools. Perhaps “God’s Not Dead” drifts a bit too far toward a happy ending for most of the characters, but that is overridden by the overall tone and inspiration generated by this well-done and worth-seeing film. It’s now showing at the Mall 8 Theatre in Hutchinson.
*** If you are looking for a movie long on action but short on virtually anything resembling brains, then Marvel comics’ “Captain America” could easily be your cup of tea. The special effects, car chase, blockbuster battle scenes and close-to-nonstop fighting and violence crowd will come away singing its praises. The rest of us have to be perplexed, embarrassed and somewhat disgusted with the mentality of so many of our fellow citizens when “Captain America” comes away as the biggest box-office attraction this past week and perhaps on its way to being one of the largest ticket-sellers this year. When the action far outstrips any sense of believ-

ability and the story itself is equally lame-brained, one has to wonder why so many millions of people spend two hours and 15 minutes of their lives escaping reality and voiding of any human accomplishment. Why a stellar actor like Robert Redford, who was so brilliant in holding an audience in the nearly no-dialogue “All is Lost” movie, would lend his talents to “Captain America” is equally baffling. Flat disturbing is why the Min-
neapolis Star Tribune, whose reviews are also touted in The Wichita Eagle, would give this film 3½ stars. What have they been drinking in Minnesota? And why would the nearby Eagle take its word on such a flimsy, stupid movie without reviewing it themselves? Chris Evans, portraying the powerful, shield-bearing “captain”; Scarlett Johansson, who undoubtedly took her role for a big paycheck; and Samuel L. Jack-
son, who is not a stranger to action movies, all are credible in their roles. The ending certain sets up a sequel, but, please, someone save the planet from having to again endure such a waste of time and talent. The most disturbing part of “Captain America,” which at the best rates 1½ stars, was having to see Scarlett as a redhead rather than a blonde. Now, that really is offensive! DAN DEMING Hutchinson

us on LOOKING FOR A GOOD BEER? STAY IN TOUCH Follow Facebook at The Beehive CHECK OUT WHAT WE FOUND BY TIM SCHRAG For The Bee tschrag@hutchnews.com Drinking beer is nothing new. People have been partaking for centuries. Even Martin Luther advocated its consumption. Then again, the beer he drank and the suds available to us today aren’t exactly the same. Even here in Hutchinson, there are a plethora of brews both simple and complex, both foreign and domestic. In an era where micro-brews and make-your-own six-packs are all the rage, sometimes the average Budweiser just doesn’t cut it. Here at The Bee, we’re happy to help navigate some of the unusual and popular options available in Hutch, one sip at a time. Obviously this is just a small taste of what’s available, but it’s an excellent jumping-off point. Keep it (somewhat) local Kansas City may be in another state, but we’ll claim it just the same. Boulevard Brewing Co., based in Kansas City, Mo., can come right along with it. Boulevard offers seven year-round beers, five seasonal beers and 13 special Smokestack Series beers. They run the

gamut. If you like a good wheat beer or IPA, you can’t go wrong here. Find one that tickles your fancy here: http://www.boulevard.com/ beers/about-our-beers/. It’s $8.49 at Temaat Liquor for a six-pack. Sunflower Showdown No matter your colors, here are some beers all Kansans can enjoy. Tallgrass Brewery in Manhattan and Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence offer a wide selection of beers worth your time. Tallgrass’ Buffalo Sweat Porter and 8-Bit Ale are probably the most notable from the Purple City. Over on
the hill, grab an Ad Astra Ale or Copperhead Pale Ale. It’s $8.33 for most Free State varieties at Egbert Liquor – $10.79 for most Tallgrass beers also at Egbert Liquor. For the adventurous Twisted Pine Billy’s Chili Beer: Serrano, habanero, jalapeno, Anaheim and Fresno chili peppers are the stars of this unfiltered wheat beer, providing wonderfully fresh, spicy aroma and a complex chili pepper taste. The chili flavor is mild, not dominant, thus making for an incredibly drinkable beer that pairs great with food and will leave you thirsty for more. It’s $8.99 at DJ Liquor. ODell’s Fernet Aged Porter: Aged in empty Fernet Barrels from Leopold Bros. Distillery. Their distinct Fernet includes lavender, honeysuckle, ginger root, bitter aloe, dandelion root, rose petals, chamomile and pepper. Enjoy the herb-and-spice flavors of this dark, minty liqueur. The roasty chocolate malt character is infused with hints of mint and licorice from the herb-soaked oak, creating a decadent flavor and aroma. It’s $12.19 at DJ Liquor. ODell’s Celastrina: Celastrina, or Hops Blue, is named for a tiny blue butterfly found living on wild hop plants along the Front Range of Colorado. Celastrina Saison pays tribute to this winged creature with delicate hints of banana and clove-like flavor, typical of a traditional Saison, that flutter with a subtle spice character derived only from the hops used. Fun fact: $1 from each bottle sold will go to the Colorado Natural Heritage Program to help fund research of the Hops Blue butterfly. It’s $12.19 at DJ Liquor. New Belgium Cigar City Collaboration: Deep orange and slightly hazy, it has a fruity, citrus combo aroma from hops, spice and yeast aromas. There’s a slight herbal, cedar note. The flavor starts sweet, then has a little tangy tartness, but quickly turns bitter and spicy. Great complexity, for $7.19 at DJ Liquor. Horny Goat Watermelon Wheat: Yeah. Watermelon. Sounds weird, but it’s worth a try. A nice, light session-candidate wheat ale, it’s a great summer beer that goes down easy, with a good flavor balance and surprisingly good body. Unless you object to the melon element, this is hard to knock.

FORT SCOTT – I might be a little partial to this road trip – my boyfriend is one of the re-enactors, so if you see a boy in blue, say “Hi” – though I’m not going to make it out this year. The Fort Scott National Historic Site is hosting its annual Civil War Encampment on Saturday and Sunday. It’s focusing on the year 1864. You can watch as re-enactors take you back to an era where times were turbulent and the war was in full swing. You’ll learn about the Battle of Mine Creek, one of the largest cavalry engagements of the Civil War, according to nps.gov. Admission is free. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the weekend, there is even 1860s Victorianstyle dancing. The schedule is as follows:
