MAY BLOOMS WITH UNIQUE OBSERVANCES BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee ryanc@hutchnews.com

Editor’s note: This is the 11th in a 12-part series detailing some of the many bizarre holidays celebrated nationally or internationally each month. While most seem utterly ridiculous, and while keeping in mind that not everything found on the Internet can be taken at face value, each listing that follows was verified through at least two online sources. Aside from doting on your mother, the May calendar is open to do with what you please. If you need a few suggestions for how to while away the time, you’ve come to the right place. *** While you can never be too sure in Kansas, it appears that the days of sub-freezing temperatures are a thing of the past. If you haven’t already, you now have permission to fire up the grill in honor of Barbecue Month and Hamburger Month. (And don’t forget the greens; it is Salad Month, after all.) Other opportunities to bask in the improving weather come in the form of Bike Month and Photography Month. And once in the great outdoors, it’ll be easy to take advantage of Get Caught Reading Month. May 1 – Lei Day, Loyalty Day, Mother Goose Day, New Homeowners Day, School Principals’ Day. Out of loyalty to Mother Goose’s wholesome stories, we’ll curb the urge to make a joke of people getting “leid.” May 2 – Baby Day, No Pants Day, Space Day, Tuba Day. OK, baby. You get a pass on not wearing pants ... this time. May 3 – Garden Meditation Day, Hug Your Cat Day, Join Hands Day, Lumpy Rug Day,

Paranormal Day, Two Different Colored Shoes Day, Press Freedom Day. If there truly is freedom of the press, why won’t any credible news agencies publish our exposés on the existence of ghosts? May 4 – Firefighters’ Day, Petite and Proud Day, Star Wars Day. You’ll likely be hard pressed to find a firefighter who is petite and proud. That’s about as rare as a ship that can make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. May 5 – Cartoonists Day, Oyster Day. Oddly, there are no popular cartoons starring oysters. May 6 – Asthma Day, Buddha Day, No Diet Day, No Homework Day, Nurses Day, Teacher Day. In your next life, maybe you’ll be a nurse or teacher. May 7 – School Nurses Day. Since it sounds sadistic to wish you a steady string of cuts and bruises to treat, we’ll just say “Have a boring day!” May 8 – Free Trade Day, Iris Day, No Socks Day. I’ll trade you a pair for some bulbs. May 9 – Lost Sock Memorial Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Moscato Day. It’s going to take a lot of wine to drown the memory of those wayward socks. May 10 – Birth Mother’s Day, Clean Up Your Room Day, Fair Trade Day, Lupus Day, Migratory Bird Day, Mother Ocean Day, Stay Up All Night Day, Train Day, Windmill Day. Get in on the ground floor of a brand-new holiday with Mother Ocean Day, introduced last year by the South Florida Kayak Fishing Club. Thankfully, it’s on a Saturday, so you can spare the time to drive. May 11 – Eat What You Want Day, Root Canal Appreciation Day, Twilight Zone Day. Is it enough just to appreciate that we haven’t had one? May 12 – Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day,

Limerick Day, Odometer Day, Nutty Fudge Day. There once was a Hutchinson man / who ate nutty fudge by the pan. / So much was consumed / that his waistline ballooned, / and now he dines only on bran. May 13 – Frog Jumping Day, Leprechaun Day. Hopefully we’re not talking about the murderous leprechaun of the poor 1990s horror movie variety. May 14 – Dance Like a Chicken Day, Receptionists Day, Third Shift Workers’ Day. That sure would liven up all the waiting rooms in town. Hop to it, receptionists! May 15 – Chocolate Chip Day, Police Officer’s Memorial Day, Nylon Stockings Day, Straw Hat Day. Are we to eat just one morsel? May 16 – Bike to Work Day, Biographers Day, Endangered Species Day, Pizza Party Day, Sea Monkey Day, Virtual Assistants Day. The Bee staff is available for special appearances at your next pizza party. (We’ll even learn how to make balloon animals, if that seals the deal.) May 17 – Armed Forces Day, Hypertension Day, Learn to Swim Day, Pack Rat Day, Telecommunications Day. Pool season starts in just over a week; better learn quickly! May 18 – Museum Day, Neighbor Day, No Dirty Dishes Day, Visit Your Relatives Day. How about No Washing Dishes Day? (Why don’t they ever take care of themselves?) May 19 – Accounting Day, Boys' Club Day, May Ray Day. No, don’t settle in for a marathon of Rachael Ray. Get out and catch some rays – as in the sun, not the aquatic animal. May 20 – Be a Millionaire Day, Pick Strawberries Day, Weights & Measures Day. Yeah, but, as a wise man once pondered, who wants to be one of those? May 21 – I Need a Patch for That Day, Rapture Party Day,

Waiters and Waitresses Day. Will restaurants even be open during the Rapture? May 22 – Buy a Musical Instrument Day, Goth Day, Maritime Day. Whatever you purchase, make sure it’s black – and toss in a few skull decals. May 23 – Don’t Fry Day, Lucky Penny Day, Turtle Day. If you find a turtle that’s faceup, is that lucky, too? May 24 – Brother’s Day, Escargot Day, Jazz Day, Tiara Day. You had me at escargot. May 25 – Missing Children’s Day, Tap Dance Day, Towel Day. One of our famous, poorly conceived jokes seems inappropriate on this date. May 26 – Lindy Hop Day, Sally Ride Day. A dance associated with 1920s-30s jazz and a pioneer female astronaut. This is a day both Armstrongs (Louis and Neil)

could have appreciated. May 27 – Cellophane Tape Day, Sun Screen Day. Warning: Wrapping one’s body in cellophane tape is not a substitute for sun screen. May 28 – Amnesty International Day, Senior Health & Fitness Day. Not that you need a special reason to contribute to a worthy cause ... May 29 – Learn About Composting Day, Put a Pillow

on Your Fridge Day. “What do you want for dinner?” “I don’t know; I’ll sleep on it.” May 30 – Loomis Day, Mint Julep Day, Water a Flower Day. Dust off your wireless telegraphs. It’s what inventor Mahlon Loomis would want. May 31 – Macaroon Day, No Tobacco Day, Save Your Hearing Day. Now you finally have an excuse to tune everybody out.

After the parade, the celebration will continue with an opening ceremony at noon. For the next four hours, there will be a fiesta in the square with Mexican entertainment, food and crafts.

SUNDAY Kansas City, Kan. Time: noon Come out with your dog, visit a variety of vendors, participate in the costume contest and enjoy a great day with other animal lovers at the second annual chihuahua parade. MONDAY Lyons (Coronado Quivira Museum, 105 W. Lyon St.) Times: 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. Join Fort Larned National Historic Site park ranger Ellen Jones as she brings the Traveling Trunks Program to the museum. The featured story is El Hombre, which tells the story of Julio, who travels with his merchant father from Santa Fe to the railroad heading at Hays City, Kansas, in 1868. Though only 12, Julio is expected to conduct himself as an adult and shoulder his fair share of the work. The story is climaxed by young Julio being given his father's watch, a symbol of manhood. While the story has a "coming of age" theme, it also tells the story of Mexican involvement in the Santa Fe trade, an often overlooked part of the Santa Fe Trail history.

‘A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE’ LEADS TONY NOMINATIONS BY MARK KENNEDY AP Drama Writer NEW YORK – The musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” a comedic romp in which a poor man eliminates the eight heirs ahead of him for a title, nabbed a leading 10 Tony Award nominations on Tuesday. Nominations were spread out for most other shows, reflecting the lack of a juggernaut this year. “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” a cult off-Broadway hit about a transgender East German performer, stars Neil Patrick Harris and won eight nominations, while “After Midnight,” a musical celebrating Duke Ellington’s years at the Cotton Club nightclub, got seven, tied with “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” and a British revival of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” Bryan Cranston won a nod for playing Lyndon Johnson in “All the Way,” and Woody Allen got one for turning his film “Bullets Over Broadway” into a musical. The nominations also made waves for snubbing some big names, including Denzel Washington, James Franco, Zachary Quinto, Michelle Williams, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Ethan Hawke, Zach Braff, Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig. Daniel Radcliffe struck out for his third consecutive Broadway show. Danny Burstein got one of the two nods “Cabaret” received and though it was his fifth nomination, he said he was sad that co-star Williams missed out on one in her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles. “I’m heartbroken that she wasn’t nominated. She is so fantastic in the show. And in all my years I have never seen anyone work harder,” he said. “She comes in at 5:45 every day for an 8:00 show, to work on things, run through numbers.” The musicals up for the big prize in June are: “After Midnight,” ‘’A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” ‘’Aladdin,” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Shows that failed to make the cut include “Bullets Over Broadway,” ‘’Rocky,” ‘’If/Then” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” “It’s good to be acknowledged,” said Andy Karl, nominated as a leading actor for the title role in “Rocky” and who has transformed his body over three years into a fearsome boxer. “It’s nice to know it was worth the time and effort.” Of the lack of a best musical nomination for the show, he said he was disappointed, adding: “That’s how the Tony cookie crumbles.” Jessie Mueller, nominated for playing songwriter Carole King, said she was thrilled “Beautiful” had done so well with seven nominations. She added she’s still stunned by the outpouring of affection King gets. “Every night I am still nervous about it, and I think that’s what keeps me honest. I admire her so

City Music Hall. Only Broadway shows that opened in the 12 months ending on April 24 are eligible. “I’m in shock,” said Lena Hall, a Broadway veteran who earned a best featured actress in a musical for her gender-bending part beside Harris in the rock show “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” The lesson, she said of her nomination – in addition to always jump at the chance to work with Harris – is to “do what you believe in and do what you love.” Hall, who has appeared in “Cats,” ‘’Tarzan” and “Kinky Boots,” said she was waiting to call her parents who were still asleep in San Francisco. “I really wasn’t expecting this at all. This is crazy.” Associated Press National Writer Jocelyn Noveck in New York contributed to this report.

much. I take it very seriously. It’s a big responsibility,” said Mueller. (King, who only recently saw the show, posted on her Facebook page that she will attend the Tony Awards.) “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” was nominated for best book by Robert L. Freedman, best original score for Freedman and Steven Lutvak, best costumes by Linda Cho, best direction by Darko Tresnjak, Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations, best featured actress in a musical for Lauren Worsham, best scenic design for Alexander Dodge and for its two lead actors: Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. The show, which was well received but sometimes struggled at the box office, has been considered an underdog this season, though Mays was considered a lock for a nomination: In each show, he plays all eight victims – two women and six men – and goes through 12 costume changes in the first act alone. Disney’s “Aladdin,” an adaptation of the 1992 animated movie featuring a rambunctious genie, earned five nominations, including one for James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the genie. “I know it sounds cliche, but I’m so happy to be nomi-

nated. I get to sit down at the Tonys. I’m not in the back. I’m not watching it on television. I get to sit. There’s a ticket with my name on it,” Iglehart said. “And I don’t have to pay for it!” Nick Cordero, a “Rock of Ages” veteran who plays a mob soldier with a flair for the dramatic in “Bullets Over Broadway,” said he was flattered and exhilarated to earn a nomination for best featured actor in a musical. He admitted he had been considering leaving the business. “I’m 35 years old and I was sort of considering other options when I got this job,” he said. “It’s been nothing but a real gift.” Five-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald earned a leading actress in a play nomination for “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.” That’s the one female acting category in which she hasn’t already notched at least one win, meaning she is in a position to make history as the Tonys’ first grand-slam performance winner. McDonald goes up against Tyne Daly from “Mothers and Sons,” LaTanya Richardson Jackson of “A Raisin in the Sun,” Cherry Jones from “The Glass Menagerie” and Es-

telle Parsons in “The Velocity of Autumn.” The best new play category has James Lapine’s “Act One,” Terrance McNally’s “Mothers and Sons,” Robert Schenkkan’s “All the Way,” John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar” and Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina.” Completely ignored in that category was “The Realistic Joneses,” a play by Will Eno that features Toni Collette of “United States of Tara,” Marisa Tomei of “My Cousin Vinny,” Michael C. Hall of “Dexter” and Tracy Letts, the Tony winning playwright and actor. None of the actors were nominated. Mark Rylance got two nods: One as a leading actor in a play for playing the evil title character in “Richard III” and another as a featured role as a lady in “Twelfth Night.” Stephen Fry also got a nomination for his featured role in “Twelfth Night.” Rylance will compete in the best leading actor in a play category with Samuel Barnett, also in “Twelfth Night,” Cranston in “All The Way,” Chris O’Dowd in “Of Mice and Men” and Tony Shalhoub in “Act One.” Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel, the “Frozen” singer who got a dose of attention when John Travolta mangled her name at the Oscars, also got a nomination for her role in “If/Then,” the only totally original new musical on Broadway this season. She will compete in June with Mary Bridget Davies in “A Night with Janis Joplin,” Sutton Foster in “Violet,” Mueller in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” and Kelli O’Hara of “The Bridges of Madison County.” A decision by a Tony administrative panel last week made Alan Cumming ineligible for a lead acting musical prize in the revival of “Cabaret” because he al-

ready won the award for the same role in 1998. Linda Emond, who earned a nomination as the landlady Fraulein Schneider in “Cabaret,” tipped her cap to Cumming, the show’s emcee. “There’s an economy to what he does, a brilliance to it,” she said. “It’s in his body. It’s a privilege to be a part of the production with him.” The best play revival category includes “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” ‘’The Glass Menagerie,” ‘’A Raisin in the Sun” and “Twelfth Night.” There are only three options for best musical revival: “Violet,” ‘’Les Miserables” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” A new rule this year allows for a fifth nominee in the four major production categories – best musical and play and best revivals for each – if at least nine shows are eligible and the fifth-highest vote-getter finishes close enough to the fourth. Some 870 Tony voters – members of professional groups such as the Wing, the League, Actors’ Equity Association, the Dramatists Guild and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society – will decide the final awards, which will be handed out June 8 at Radio

WEBSITE UNVEILS CAST OF ‘STAR WARS: EPISODE VII’ BY JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer

NEW YORK – “Star Wars: Episode VII” finally has its stars. May the Force be with them. After months of carefully guarded secrecy and endless Internet speculation, the cast of the latest incarnation of the space epic was unveiled Tuesday on the official “Star Wars” website by Lucasfilm and the Walt Disney Co. Starring in J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Wars” are: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Max von Sydow, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson. The companies declined to name the characters each will play, though Driver, the breakout star of HBO’s

“Girls,” is widely expected to be playing the film’s feature villain. They join returning “Star Wars” veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. Peter Mayhew is also back as Chewbacca and Kenny Baker will reprise RD-D2. “It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again,” director and co-writer Abrams said in a statement. “We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.” Disney will release “Star Wars: Episode VII,” which will be set 30 years after 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,”

in December 2015. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, and immediately put a new “Star Wars” trilogy into development. The “Episode VII” cast is a mix of fresh faces, up-andcomers and established names. The 22-year-old British actor Boyega is best known for the 2011 science fiction monster movie “Attack the Block.” Ridley, also a young British actor, is largely unknown. She has appeared in several British TV series, including “Mr. Selfridge.” Like Driver, Isaac is a recent breakout star, following his acclaimed performance in the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis.” The 30-year-old Irish actor Gleeson has appeared in numerous films, including 2012’s “Anna Karenina” and both parts of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” He’s acted frequently on stage, earning a Tony nomination in 2006 for his performance in “The Lieutenant of Inishmore.” The British actor Serkis is famous for his digital shapeshifting, playing Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” films and the titular gorilla in “King Kong.” It’s widely speculated that he’ll again trade on his specialty of using performance capture to craft a digital character. Von Sydow, the 85-year-old Swedish legend of “The Exorcist” and “The Seventh Seal,” will presumably add the kind of gravitas Alec Guinness brought to the 1977 original. Scoring “Episode VII” will be John Williams, who created the original trilogy’s famous themes.

YAHOO TO SHOW 2 COMEDY SERIES IN VIDEO EXPANSION THE ASSOCAITED PRESS NEW YORK – Yahoo will release two new comedy series next year in hopes of becoming an even more serious player in Internet video programming. The expansion announced Monday during a presentation in New York makes Yahoo Inc. the latest technology company to mount a challenge to Netflix Inc., which runs the Internet’s largest Internet video subscription service. Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc. and Hulu.com are among the other companies angling for a piece of the growing audience watching video piped over high-speed Internet connections instead of broadcast signals or cable services. Yahoo’s comedies are “Other Space,” a show revolving around an alternate universe set in the 22nd century, and “Sin City Saints,” a show about the front-office antics of a fictional basketball team. Both series will consist of eight half-hour episodes.

‘SCANDAL’ CO-STAR SHORT'S PERSONAL WOES ADD UP Even viewer Funches, who liked Short on the show, says it will keep her rapt attention without him. “Scandal” is known as much for its “eye candy,” including Short and its other handsome actors, as for its wild plot twists, she said.

BY LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES – Columbus Short is a master of career reinvention. The “Scandal” co-star began working in commercials as a teenager, became a choreographer for Britney Spears and then turned actor and landed on the hit ABC political thriller. His latest plan was to make it in music, starting with a newly released single. Instead, Short, 31, is facing the plight of other troubled performers: Out of his plum TV job as he confronts alleged misbehavior that has overshadowed his success. His marriage is at stake as well, and the newly acquired affluence he owes to an industry that may give a series star like Charlie Sheen second and third chances but shows little patience with mid-level performers who roil the waters. And that is what Short has done. A 2010 fight on a basketball court at a Los Angeles gym led to a charge of battery that was resolved when he pleaded no contest to a lesser charge and was sentenced to three years of informal probation. In February, Short was arrested twice by police after his wife, Tuere Short, called to report he was being abusive. He has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor spousal battery. In March, he was charged with felony battery after allegedly knocking a man unconscious in a West Hollywood bar fight and faces a May arraignment. Three weeks ago, his wife accused him of threatening her with a knife during a fight, stabbing a couch as he pinned her to it and threatening to kill her with the couple’s 2-year-old daughter in the house. She left, filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order. Jeff Jacquet, Short’s attorney, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday. But Jacquet wrote in an April 23 court filing that Tuere Short’s restraining order filing had “a number of egregiously false statements” but did not go into detail to refute any of the domestic violence claims. His motion focused on the actor’s right to be at a hillside home in suburban Chatsworth that he began renting in January for nearly $7,000 a month. The lease, slated to run through December 2016, reflected some

of Short’s long-term plans: The actor would have the option to buy the home for $2 million later this year. Short failed to help his image during an interview earlier this month with radio host Tom Joyner. His responses were rambling and at sometimes combative, as when Joyner asked what Short’s wife thinks of his new single, “Gave Ya.” “I don’t care. How about, I don’t care,” Short said. He later issued an apology for his demeanor, saying he was exhausted and not under the influence of any substance, and that he regretted using the n-word in the exchange. Despite headlines about his woes, one “Scandal” fan said she was taken aback by Short’s announcement Friday he was leaving his role as attorney Harrison Wright. The presumption was it wasn’t entirely voluntary, and his contract option reportedly was not renewed. “I was shocked and disappointed,” said Jmeka Funches, 18, a student in Cleveland, Ohio. But she was aware of his legal problems and figured those were the reason. “Maybe he and the producers felt it was time for him to step back and focus on things he might have going on at home,” Funches said. The season finale had Wright last seen in the sights of a gun, a cliffhanger that could be easily tweaked either way for the character to survive or not. ABC and series creator Shonda Rhimes declined comment Monday. A call to a cellphone listed as belonging to Short was answered by a man who identified himself as his assistant and

SONY MAKING A SPORTS VERSION OF ‘JEOPARDY!’ THE ASSOCAITED PRESS NEW YORK – “Jeopardy!” is starting a sports version of the popular game show, with Dan Patrick taking the Alex Trebek role as host. Sony Pictures said Tuesday that “Sports Jeopardy!” will begin this fall on Crackle, a Sony-owned digital service available on mobile devices and services such as

PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV and Roku. Crackle general manager Eric Berger says the sports-themed game show will diversify programming on the service, best known for the Jerry Seinfeld comedy shorts series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Crackle also will offer an app through which people can play along with the game on a second screen.

took a message, but the call was not returned. Eric Deegans, TV critic for National Public Radio and author of “RaceBaiter,” said he was surprised by Short’s exit because the charges against him have yet to be proven in court. But Deegans said he understands the logistics at work. “If (a case) comes to trial in the middle of next season, there would be more bad publicity as the show is airing,” along with taping disruptions, he said. This way, Short can focus on his defense and producers keep their attention on the series. After all, said veteran publicist David Brokaw, the industry maxim is “whatever you do, the show must go

on. Don’t do anything to halt production.” Rhimes has seen firsthand on another of her shows the toll that even a war of words can take. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington was fired after his use of a gay slur in the presence of his co-stars caused a public uproar and tension on the set seven years ago. It’s also worth noting that a show entering its fourth season, as “Scandal” will be this fall, is likely to have ballooning costs and be expected to find ways to contain them. Leaving star Kerry Washington aside, cutting an ensemble cast member is a relatively painless way to accomplish that, Brokaw said.

Bring on another good-looking guy – she tweeted Michael Ealy as one suggestion – “and we’ll forget all about Harrison being gone.” AP Entertainment Writer Anthony McCartney contributed to this report.

‘SLOTZILLA’ ZIP LINE OPENS IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS STRIP BY MICHELLE RINDELS Associated Press LAS VEGAS – A zip line that swoops riders past the vintage casinos of downtown Las Vegas and under the giant video canopy of the Fremont Street Experience is now open for business. The lower zip lines on the $12 million SlotZilla attraction opened to the public Sunday after 14 months of construction, while a set of higher lines is expected to open a little later this spring. “People are really enjoying it,” said Fremont Street Experience spokesman Thomas Bruny, who pointed out more typical zip lines take tourists over forests and lakes. “This one is unique because nowhere else are you flying over people and under the largest video canopy in the world.” The high-flying rides start from a 12-story tower designed to look like a giant slot machine. Riders can now take the 77-foothigh zip lines, in which visitors are harnessed in a sitting position and glide 850 lateral feet to a platform near The D and 4 Queens casinos. In this photo taken Sunday and provided by the Fremont Street Experience, guests ride zip lines that swoop past the vintage casinos of downtown Las Vegas and under the giant video canopy of the Fremont Street Experience. riders from 114 feet up and sends them soaring in a horizontal “Superman” position 1,700 feet across the entire pedestrian mall. That attraction uses a power boost to ensure riders make it the full distance of the wire. Zip line rides cost $20, while zoom line rides will cost $30. The attraction is an ex-

pansion of a much smaller, temporary zip line that has for two years scooted families, newlyweds and Elvis impersonators beneath a long metal canopy that displays an hourly light show. That ride was intended to be a 30-day novelty, but it proved such a crowd pleaser the business community began working to make it permanent.

‘IDOL’ WINNER TO HELP REOPEN WASHINGTON MONUMENT THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – “American Idol” winner Candice Glover will help reopen the Washington Monument, which has been closed since a 2011 earthquake. Organizers say the R&B singer will join with the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Navy Band

and the boy and girl choristers of the Washington National Cathedral Choir for the May 12 re-opening ceremony. The “Today” show’s Al Roker will host the event. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis and philanthropist David Rubenstein will help celebrate. Rubenstein do-

nated $7.5 million to cover half the restoration cost. The 130-year-old memorial has been closed since it was damaged by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in August 2011. Workers have repaired more than 150 cracks in the 555-foot obelisk. Normally the monument draws about 700,000 visitors a year.
