THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014 ART FAIR RETURNS TO FAIRGROUNDS BY THE BEE STAFF For the second straight year, the Hutchinson Art Association will hold its annual Art Fair in the Sunflower South Building at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The event – now in its 52nd year – runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. More than 90 Kansas and regional artists will display their works. For children, volunteers will be on hand to assist in several art-related projects. Last year, the annual sale was forced to move away from downtown due to a scheduling conflict with Memorial Hall. At the time, Art Association director Mark Rassette said the fairgrounds provides protection from the weather, flat surfaces for those with mobility problems and plenty of parking.

WAYS TO ENCOURAGE YOUR BUDDING ARTIST BY BETSIE ANDREWS

Springtime! Concerts, recitals and shows, oh my! Now is the perfect time to spring into action if you are considering a performing arts education for your budding artist. (“Performing arts,” for the purpose of this article, are the lively arts of music, dance and drama.) Plenty of year-end presentations can be found in this area by checking the Hutchinson News calendar, the Web or posters around town. These productions are usually free and give the parent an opportunity to see and hear the various products locally available. (For the enjoyment of all, your budding artist should be at least a late 3 or 4 years old.) If you like what you see and hear, then it could be time to think about the next season of instruction for your budding artist, typically beginning with the school year. Here are three helpful points to consider before signing up in the fall: the age of your budding artist, the quality of the teaching, and the cost. Budding artist’s age The performing arts are a great vehicle to teach critical thinking skills, self-discipline, confidence, cooperation and work ethic, along with a particular artful skill. The training in each of these arts (music, dance and drama) is typically 7 to 10 years. However, there is risk in starting too soon. For ages pre-6, whether the interest is in music, drama or dance, the best prelude is creative child-like activities, i.e., singing simple songs, being read to and enjoying beautiful children’s books (visit your public library), and listening to classical music (Radio Kansas FM 90.1). Children are naturally drawn to the beautiful. It is the job of parents and artful teachers to preserve this natural instinct and choose beauty over mediocrity when it comes to a child’s day. This doesn’t cost a dime!

velopment is ready to translate abstract symbols into concrete application, and soft, tender muscles and bones have strengthened and solidified.

This photo taken in 2004 pictures Grace Crater, center, who began in the Budding Artist Branch and is now a dancer in ArtisTree's Dance Branch. She will be dancing in ArtisTree's shows at the Fox Theatre on May 23 and 24.

The first consideration for knowing if the time is right, is developmental appropriateness. In other words, make sure the activity is appropriate to the child’s physical, mental, social and academic development. For example, toddlers, ages 2 and 3, are processing the world around them at a rate that would boggle the mind of the average adult. During their first years, children simply need to be encouraged to greet their world with wide eyes and open ears. They need to drink in all the color, texture, line and design in their everyday lives –without labels. This means let them discover that an orange is orange. Allow them to observe, process and discover for themselves the differences and similarities in their sightings. If this happens, they will naturally be using all their senses throughout their day. This approach is the best reading-readiness. It is artful readiness. Noticing the color of life in each daily errand and activity takes little time and, again, is free! This age also does well with a few opportunities to be with other youngsters, to foster, but not

force, cooperation, sharing and kindness. This purposeful preparation sets the stage for future successful learning. It builds a creative base first. The noted psychologist/philosopher Jean Piaget’s cognitive studies alert educators to honor children in these ways, and not program children like robots. This approach takes patience but will likely find a child by third or fourth grade, more self-motivated and more eager to learn. Part of honoring the child is making sure that what is put before him is indeed childlike and beautiful. Again, with limited time and money, this costs nothing extra of either! A child’s first 5 or 6 years are the best window for creative opportunities. To substitute what is perceived as “getting a head start” in reading, math, ballet, piano or acting can actually work against a child’s creative, mental and physical development. Typically, age 7 or 8 is a much safer time for a child to begin training in the arts (although voice instruction comes at a later age). By this age, a child’s cognitive de-

Quality of teaching Reciting lines, tooting a horn, or learning a dance is secondary to learning HOW to act, play an instrument or dance. A parent can expect plenty of side benefits from a training in the performing arts, such as increased focus, self-discipline, confidence, grace and, above all, an appreciation for the arts. Here are some questions to consider when the time is ripe for the future training of your budding artist: ● What is the teacher’s or staff ’s training and professional experience? ● What is the teacher or studio’s or theater’s teaching philosophy? ● How does the environment feel? Go see it! Is it a safe, artful, encouraging, orderly environment? Are the instruments and/or equipment well cared for? Are the pianos in tune? Are the floors sprung? ● How are graduates of this art putting their training to use? The cost Certainly a play group as a recreational activity is less time and money than a training in the performing arts. But if one is going to spend even a little time and money in the performing arts, one should at least expect to receive specific technique and learn a little of that art’s universal language, be it music, dance or drama. One should also expect to reap some life-related side benefits for the time and money spent, such as focus and self-discipline. Be sure to ask about hidden costs. Of course, there is usually a charge for each lesson. There will also be the cost of supplies and equipment to consider – i.e., an instrument, music books, dance shoes. There may also be added production fees, competition fees,

BET ON GUILD MUSICAL ‘LUCKY STIFF’TO BRING THE LAUGHS BY KRISTEN RODERICK The Hutchinson News kroderick@hutchnews.com The second production of the Hutchinson Theatre Guild’s season hopes to bring laughs and suspense for audiences of all ages. “Lucky Stiff,” a musical comedy by Stephen Flaherty and Lynne Ahrens, is at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday and May 15-17 and 2 p.m. Sunday and May 18 at Stage 9, 9 S. Main St. It follows Harry Witherspoon, a recent beneficiary of his Uncle Tony Hendon’s will, according to a release. Before inheriting the $6 million, Witherspoon has to take his deceased uncle on a vacation to Monte Carlo. But Annabel Glick, employee of Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn, is watching Witherspoon very closely. If he doesn’t come through wtih Witherspoon’s vacation, the Dog Home will get Hendon’s

Kaylee Everly/For The Bee

Annabel Glick portrays Piper Harding as she reveals her quest to win the inheritance of $6 million from Lynn Hase who portrays Harry Witherspoon, as he looks down at his dead uncle, Tony Hendon, during their vacation to Monte Carlo, Tuesday, April 6, 2014, during dress rehearsal of "Lucky Stiff" at the Hutchinson Theatre Guild.

fortune. What they don’t know is that the $6 million does not belong to Hendon. He stole the money from his lover’s husband, an Atlantic City mob-afffiliated casino owner. So, naturally, Hendon’s lover,

Rita, and her brother, Vinnie, head to Monte Carlo to track down Witherspoon and the money. The cast includes Lynne Hase as Harry Witherspoon, Piper Harding as Annibel Glick, Whitney Lansdowne

as Rita, Matt Lansdowne as Vinnie, Aaron Parker as Tony, Ben Jones as Luigi, Amy Bronlee as Dominique and part of the ensemble. Kathy Lansdowne, Kally Gauthier and Amanda Moore also make up the ensemble. The production is directed by Charles Johnston and Blaine Teter. Tickets are $12 for ages 15-64, $10 for ages 65 and up, and $8 for ages 14 and under. Advance tickets may be purchased at www.hutchtheatre.com or at Apron Strings, 1 S. Main St. They are also available at Stage 9 one hour before showtime, but because of limited seating, advanced purchase is recommended. Doors open at 7 p.m. for evening performances and 1:30 p.m. for afternoon performances. For more information, email hutchinsontheatreguild@gmail.com or call (316) 350-PLAY (7529).

and costumes for those in singing groups, theater and dance. Ask! If there is a sincere interest on the part of the family, and the child is motivated and willing, there IS a way to develop a love of the arts. Money should not be the deal-breaker. Theaters, teachers or studios have the same maintenance needs and time limitations like any other business. Often there are needed skills or time which parents can contribute in-kind. Also, if the student shows great promise and dedication, there are usually scholarships available in the later years of study. At any rate, a good training is an investment which brings a lifetime of dividends. So spring into action and check out firsthand what the various teachers, studios and theaters are producing this month! Betsie Andrews is a certified elementary educator, a professional artist, and serves as director of ArtisTree and the Prairie Nutcracker Foundation, and is arts and education coordinator for Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre.

DRUMMERS DESCEND IN ANNUAL DISPLAY BY THE BEE STAFF

Some of the most talented upcoming drummers will perform Saturday at Memorial Hall. The annual Stickpeople

concert starts at 7 p.m. Come for more than 50 drumsets playing together at the same time. Come for more than 60 percussion students from across the state representing more

than 11 school districts drumming together. Come to see drummers who are 7 to 70 years old. The Professional Drum School has performed the concert for more than 13

years. Director Ginger Zyskowski has taught more than 80 students in the 35plus years of the school. Tickets for the concert are available at Professional Drum School, Bluebird Books and Johnson Music Center, both in Hutchinson, The Clayworks in McPherson, A Pawn Shop in Newton and Midwest Drum and Percussion in Wichita. With each $15 ticket, $1 will be donated to Disability Supports of the Great Plains. There will be raffle prizes from All Things Hutch, Skaets Steak Shop, Midwest Drum & Percussion, Johnson Music Center, The Carriage Crossing, The Clayworks and Zyskowski’s sponsors – Vic Firth Sticks, Sabian Cymbals and Aquarian Drumheads.

‘SPIDER-MAN’ SEQUEL GLITZY BUT STUPID The most amazing thing about the second movie installment of Spider-Man is why so many otherwise normal people keep going to see him. Although probably headed for another box office success, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is little more than spandex stupidity. The computer special effects are amazing. Much of the action takes place in New York’s Times Square, which is cool but squandered by the far-fetched battle chaos. The performance of former flying nun Sally Field (who doesn’t come close to flying in this flick) shows she can still act. The computer editing is outstanding, but the overall story is so dumb and reality-challenged that what is good about this movie is far overshadowed by what is bad. Under certain storytelling and escape-fromreal-life scripts, I can accept a red-and-blue guy leaping between New York skyscrapers, saving people and doing in bad guys. That was my conclusion for the original Spider-Man, which I thought was much better and had some degree of believability. But there are far too many story lines, faulty attempts at humor, too many NYPD cars destroyed, confusing flashbacks to the past, clueless characters and an abundance of awful and artless antics for this film to be anywhere close to recommended viewing. I was equally unsympathetic to “Captain America,” which has become a box-office blockbuster around the world. That and Spider Guy II only make me worry more about the taste and acceptance of today’s younger people and audiences in general when they go out for a motion picture experience. One and a half stars, and only because of the editing and special effects, for “The Amazing SpiderMan 2.” DAN DEMING Hutchinson

ALL SCHOOLS DAY MARKS CENTENNIAL McPHERSON – Grab your button for the McPherson County All Schools Day celebration. The celebration began 100 years ago – in 1914 – to commemorate the graduation of McPherson County eighthgraders, and it has grown to one of the largest annual celebrations in Kansas, according to allschoolsday.com. In a memoir written in 1981, the author said that the superintendent of the district would travel to each school house to deliver graduation certificates. It took time. The All Schools Day celebration was a day to honor eighth-grade, high school and college graduates – and the superintendent was able to meet everyone in one location. The first day had a May Day Parade, commencement exercises, tennis tournaments, a graduates dinner and the dedication of Central Park in the County Square. Now it is a 10-day celebration, and the biggest day is on Friday. Check out a flyover and the parade at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street McPherson. There are duck races, face painting, playtime and more. End Friday with fireworks at the Grant Complex at dark. Saturday has a bike ride, music and a movie in the park. For more or to see the schedule, visit allschoolsday.com. Don’t forget to pick up your button, which will be your admission to most events.
