‘DON JON’ MAY DISGUST, BUT ‘RUSH’ SHINES It is probably possible to make a watchable, good movie about a man addicted to porn. Unfortunately, “Don Jon” isn't one of those movies. The only reason I didn't walk out after the first 20 minutes was that I thought something socially redeeming and of interest to the average movie-goer was going to show up. It didn’t, and at least one review that called this a “surprisingly sweet” comedy must have been written on another planet. This is one of those shows that will and should draw little interest in Hutchinson and hopefully will be gone before this review comes out in print on Thursday. If the concession stand offered trenchcoats instead of popcorn, they could make a lot of money selling cover-ups to people who don't want to be seen by friends or acquaintances coming out of such a filthy and shallow story. I had not viewed any previews and wasn’t planning to go, based on the title, until I read several national reviews that, amazingly, spoke highly of “Don Jon.” Giving it a
REVIEW
whirl was an unfortunate waste of 90 minutes and I don’t know of any friends or others who rely on my movie advice who would be remotely happy with the film or glad they went. In fact, the only reason I am writing this review is to warn people to stay away. It is a total waste of time although well-acted, and is laced with enough foul language, uninspiring sex and script shallowness that even one star is a stretch. Perhaps one of the problems is that the principal ac-
tor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays his character well, also is the writer and director. Scarlett Johansson sparkles in her role, as does Julianne Moore in a lesser but critical way, to the movie’s only redeeming value. I am told that this film started out with an X rating but was pared down in an attempt to attract adults who don't mind R’s. The best I can say is that I am glad I didn't drive to Wichita to see such a disappointing, overly graphic and offensive movie. *** First, let me assure some of my liberal friends who see no humor or value in the likes of Rush Limbaugh that this next movie is not about one of your favorite targets. “Rush” is one of the bestmade movies of the year, with a largely unknown but fascinating story, the excitement of Formula One racing from the mid-’70s, great acting, fantastic accompanying music worthy of Academy
Award consideration, fastpaced action and another exceptional job of directing by Ron Howard. It grants equal time to two historical racers: a dark, calculating Austrian, Niki Lauda, played by Daniel Bruhl, and an equally obnoxious English golden boy, James Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth. Their racing rivalry brings the audience on a collision course between diametrically opposed personalities. Your sympathy will shift faster than a racer nego-
McPherson Scot festival complete with sword play, bagpipes, dancing I had a chance to attend the Scottish Festival last weekend and it was lots of fun. This is the 20th year for this gathering and if you haven’t been, you need to check it out. There is so much to see and do, unique foods to try, amazing gifts to buy, demonstrations to watch and music at every turn. The Blackhearts Fencing Club from Derby gave demonstrations throughout the day. These demos were always entertaining and full of fun. These folks just love to talk weapons and entertain the crowd with killing and dying. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group so dedicated to the craft of battle. Men and women were dying left and right, swords were flying, judges were looking the other way at crucial intervals, and the ones who survived got crowd chants going to urge their fellow fencers to hurry up and die already. During one of the demonstrations, one combatant caused an actual slight injury to another combatant, and there was much ado about his well-being. Apparently, while they enjoy the killing and dying, they don’t want to cause actual injury. At one of the Highland game areas, I saw a fella who was helping participants get ready to compete and he had a shirt on proclaiming that he was not in fact the “Dancing Chad” but he did know him. I was never able to solve this mystery of the Dancing Chad nor was I able to locate him. Perhaps next year.
THERE’S MORE Flip to page 5 to see photos from the McPherson Scottish Festival. And it wouldn’t be a Scottish Festival without Highland dancers and bagpipe bands. I got a chance to sit in on the bagpipe competition. Both competing bands were excellent. This competition was a nationally judged
competition. As I watched both seemingly flawless performances, I began to wonder how a person judges a competition like this. So I interviewed one of the judges at the end of the competition to find out. Bagpipe bands weren’t the only music to be had at the festival. There was music everywhere. Cady Finlayson and Vita Tanga were just one of the groups performing at this year’s event. LYDIA LOWE Salina

tiating a tight curve as Howard puts together some of the best high-speed racing scenes ever brought to the screen. As another reviewer properly observed: “It’s a testament to the actors’ abilities that we see two deeply different approaches to life but can partially identify with both.” This is one exhilarating motion picture, rated R for sexual content, language and images that may disturb some. There are two different love stories underway along with the riveting racing, and the best that I can tell is that it follows fairly accurately the true story of how these
men conducted and concluded their driving careers. We can only hope “Rush” comes to Hutchinson because it should play well locally after opening this past weekend at the Warren Theatres in Wichita. Yes, it's more of a “guy movie” than for many women, but anyone who enjoys the stunning camera angles and intriguing story lines should enjoy one of Howard's more unusual but best efforts. Four stars, and don't be surprised if the directing, music and script don't get Oscar attention for 2013’s best films. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

SEVERINSEN A GREAT START TO FOX’S SEASON The Fox Theatre’s latest season got off to a rousing start last Saturday night with a performance by a man who knows his limitations at age 86 and knows how to bring along high-quality musicians to cover for the notes he can no longer hit. Doc Serverinsen, best known for 30 years as leader of the Tonight Show Band and constant sidekick to Johnny Carson, gave bigband lovers a memorable and enjoyable evening. Serverinsen was at the Fox nine years ago and he continues to give audiences plenty of great music, although I was surprised by the amount of time he spends looking at sheet music as opposed to playing the songs he has done for decades. His colorful garb remains a reminder of his “Tonight Show” look, but other than opening with that theme there was virtually no mention of Johnny or the relationship to the show that put him on the map.
marks for again bringing Severinsen. There is a lot more good entertainment headed our way, thanks to the Fox being available. We should be proud and supportive of keeping such an attraction. Next up: a musical tribute to the life and music of John-

Doc Severinsen performs at the Fox Theatre on Sept. 28. Severinsen is known for his flashy outfits.
Serverinsen still blows his horn amazingly well but has the good sense to call on a host of younger and equally talented musicians who make the show spectacular for those who love the bigband era. He was accompanied by exceptional sax, horn and drum talent, along with a very good piano player, the only woman in his 15-member band. A female singer whom he discovered in, of all places, Clay Center, Kan., many years ago, was out-
standing and a real crowdpleaser. The show could have been better using clips of the Carson show and featuring Doc in his supporting role. Many similar acts that capitalize on past TV or movie fame have used footage, shown on the type of screen readily available at the Fox, to link with memories shared by most “Tonight Show”-era audience members who dominated the Fox crowd. It also would have been

LINDSBORG – The small town of Lindsborg is celebrating its history this year with the biennial Svensk Hyllningsfest. The celebration honors Swedish immigrants who settled in the Lindsborg area in 1861. The McPherson County area was rich with farming and the Swedish immigrants envisioned a community that would thrive on Swedish culture, learning, religion and business, according to Lindsborgcity.org. BAND’S DEVOTION TO DETAIL PART OF BRINGING THE BEATLES TO LIFE BY GARY DEMUTH Special to The Bee After more than 15 years as John Lennon, musician Ron McNeil never tires of belting out “Twist and Shout” or “Strawberry Fields Forever.” In 1997, the southern California resident formed The Fab Four after seeing a musician named Ardy Sarraf perform a song as Paul McCartney during a festival to honor the music and legacy of what arguably is considered the best rock band of all time – The Beatles. “No one could believe how great (Sarraf) sounded as Paul,” McNeil said. “So I went up to him afterwards and asked if he’d consider doing this professionally.” McNeil had been told he had a resemblance to Lennon, so he and Sarraf recruited two more musicians to recreate George Harrison and Ringo Starr and formed The Fab Four, which McNeil called “the ultimate Beatles tribute band.” The Fab Four will be in concert Friday at Salina’s Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe. McNeil said what sets The Fab Four apart from other Beatles tribute bands is attention to detail. “Ardy is normally righthanded, but he learned to play left-handed because of Paul,” McNeil said. “Erik (Fidel, the musician currently playing Ringo) does not have a big nose but takes 90 minutes to put on a prosthetic.” The musician currently portraying George Harrison, Gavin Pring, actually is from The Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, England, and has helped the others perfect their Liverpool accents. Most important, McNeil said, The Fab Four painstakingly learned nearly every song in The Beatles’ repertoire – from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “Let It Be” – striving to perform note-perfect renditions live onstage without any electronic or prerecorded trickery. “We try our best every night to put everything into the music, to create a loving, respectful tribute to guys we love,” he said. McNeil said he and his bandmates have never tired of playing Beatles songs, even after 15 years. How could they, he said, when the songs include “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Yesterday,” “A Day in the Life,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “Hey Jude.” The 15-year-plus journey of The Fab Four has taken them around the world to enthusiastic audiences in Japan, Australia, France, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Brazil. McNeil and his bandmates have found that The Beatles’ music translates to nearly every culture and their fan base spans multiple generations. “The Beatles’ music has been the fabric and soundtrack of our lives, whether you grew up in that era or not,” he said. “People see a reflection of their own lives and memories in the music. IF YOU GO WHAT: Jamey Johnson WHEN: 8 p.m. today WHERE: Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe, Salina COST: $49 *** WHAT: The Fab Four WHEN: 8 p.m. Friday COST: $39-$49 fully we can bring some of those good memories back.” Country star follows muse Country music star Jamey Johnson is a man who’s followed his own particular musical muse. Having made his debut with the single “The Dollar” from his 2006 album of the same name, followed by the album “That Lonesome Song” in 2008, Johnson has created a body of work that demands close listening. That’s the opinion of Chad Allen, program director at Salina radio station Y93.7 Country Hits, who has been a big fan of Johnson for years. “A lot of what you’re going to do at his concert is really listen to the music and lyrics,” he said. “He’s more cerebral than what a lot of people are doing in country music.”
Johnson, who appears at the Stiefel tonight, has written several hit singles, including “High Cost of Living,” “My Way to You,” “Playing the Part,” “Heartache” and “Living for a Song.” The Alabama native also co-wrote hit singles for country stars Trace Adkins, George Strait, James Otto, Joe Nichols and Jessie James. In 2007, Johnson won both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year for “Give It Away.” In 2009, he won both awards for his hit “In Color.” Johnson also has been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album for his 2012 release “Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran,” an homage to one of the most well-respected songwriters in country music history. Allen said there are a lot of similarities between Johnson and “outlaw” country musicians such as Nelson and Waylon Jennings, who played by their own rules in the name of artistic freedom. “(Johnson) has respect for traditional country music but puts his own spin on it,” Allen said. “He has sad songs, but some very funny stuff, too. He’s definitely an incredible lyricist, very big on story
songs. You’re really going to want to listen to his words.”

SOUPED-UP CAR SHOW READY TO GET ROLLING BY TIM SCHRAG For The Bee tschrag@hutchnews.com From Mustang Sally to a little red Corvette, this year’s Rod Run will feature more cars than ever. More than 400 vehicles will descend upon Hutchinson this weekend for the car show. And with pre-registration numbers higher than ever, things seem to be looking up for the show. However, there may be one thing standing in the way of success: the weather. Some events were canceled last year after the Rod Run was met with inclement weather. And once again, the forecast is calling for rain on Friday. Rod Run organizer Jerry Regier is just praying for favorable skies. “We’re looking forward to great weather,” Regier said with a chuckle. “A great weekend of beautiful cars.” Either way, he and other Rod Run organizers have a backup plan for the King Midas and the Mufflers concert scheduled to go on at 6 p.m. Friday at a stage setup on First Avenue and Main Street. In the event of bad weather, the band and other Rod Run participants will head to Memorial Hall a block east at First and Walnut. Regier and his team seem to have all their bases covered. “There are so many beautiful cars here,” he said. “We cover everything from antiques to brand new (vehicles). The schedule is as follows: ● “Sleeping Beauty” by Tchaikovsky – 3:30 p.m. Jan. 5 at Century II. The performance brings the Russian National Ballet Theatre to Wichita. Prima ballerina Maria Sokolnikova leads the cast as Princess Aurora. ● “William Tell” by Rossini – 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at Century II. stars Zvetelina Vassileva, Hector Sandoval and William Powers. ● “Don Quixote” by Minkus – 7 p.m. April 26 at Century II. The Russian National Ballet Theatre is back for this performance. In its premiere at the Wichita Grand Opera, an aging nobleman dreams of a vision of Lady Dulcinea calling him to perform chivalrous deeds. ● “The Barber of Seville” by Rossini – 7 p.m. May 31 at the Orpheum Theatre. This is the story of love at first sight, but of course, there has to be some drama. The perform-
ance stars Sharin Apostolou, Kaitlyn Costello and Michael Nansel. “Early bird” single tickets, which offer a 10 percent discount and are being sold through Dec. 1, range in price from $32 to $77. Starting Dec. 2, prices increase from $35 to $85. Season ticket packages also are available, ranging from $140 to $340 for all five productions. The pick-four plan ranges from $116 to $282, and a pick-three plan ranges from $90 to $219. For more information, visit wichitagrandopera .org or call (316) 262-8054.
