‘FROZEN’ TO KICK OFF RENO COUNTY FARMER’S MARKET OPENS FOR THE SEASON FOX’S SUMMER FILMS BY KATHY HANKS For The Bee khanks@hutchnews.com
A new bike rack on the north side of the Reno County Farmer’s Market will come in handy for those who want to pedal to the Saturday market. The market opens for the season at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and the Wednesday market is scheduled to open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 28, according to Sparkle Faidley, chairman of the farmer’s market.
BY THE BEE STAFF The region already has experienced its first triple-digit temperatures of the year, but Hutchinson’s Fox Theatre is offering the opportunity for one last deep freeze. The historic venue begins its annual Summer Film Series in two weeks with Disney’s popular animated feature “Frozen.” The series includes eight other recent releases, many of which received nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, as well as a blast from the past: the 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John classic musical “Grease.” For the third straight year, the Fox also will host the Tallgrass Film Festival Road Show after the conclusion of the movie series. Show times for each movie are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $5 (buy one, get one free) and will be sold at the door 30 minutes before the start of each film. Series passes are available for $40 (also buy one, get one free) and include a coupon for 10 free popcorns. They can be purchased online at www.hutchinsonfox.com, by phone at (620) 663-1981 or at the Fox box office, 18 E. First Ave., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The movie schedule includes: ● “Frozen” – May 30-June 1
● “Philomena” – June 6-8 ● “Grease” – June 13-15 ● “The Lego Movie” – June 20-22 ● “Captain Phillips” – June 27-29 ● “Gravity” – July 11-13 ● “August: Osage County” – July 18-20 ● “Saving Mr. Banks” – July 25-27 ● “Heaven is for Real” – August 1-3 ● “Rio 2” – August 8-10 The Tallgrass Film Festival Road Show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16. It is not an official part of the Fox’s film schedule and admission is not included in series passes. The Fox Film Series is underwritten by the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Foundation, and additional support for the Tallgrass Road Show is provided by the Kansas Historic Theatres Association.
“It’s a family-friendly environment where people get to know who is producing their food,” Faidley said. “This market season we won’t be able to accept EDT/Vision debit cards,” Faidley said. However, wooden nickels left over from the 2013 season can be used. “A few vendors do accept debit cards with their smartphones,” Faidley said. There will be plenty of fresh spring vegetables, in-
cluding Roman Miller’s fresh asparagus, cucumbers and radishes for Saturday’s market. Polk Market will have peanuts and moon flowers, and there will be farmfresh eggs, jams, jellies and honey, among other things. This year there will be an outdoor flea market in the bingo parking lot next to the farmer’s market at First Avenue and Washington Street. “It’s new and we’re excited about trying it,” said Shannon Hauschild, who is
coordinating the event with Janice Griffin. “We have heard there are people who have things they want to get rid of and they don’t want to have the sale at their house.” Spaces for the flea market cost $20. They will open at 7 a.m. until noon. If it rains, they will move indoors, in the bingo hall. There will be concessions set up, serving breakfast and lunch. For more information about a space, call (620) 9605567 or (620) 960-2652.

RIDE THROUGH THE GYP HILLS THIS WEEKEND MEDICINE LODGE – It’s a chance to see the land that Indian tribes once roamed. The Gypsum Hills Trail Rides are this weekend. The location was featured on a 2011 episode of RFD-TV’s “Best of America by Horseback,” and the ranch has been a filming location for Hollywood movies and TV commercials, according to the website gypsumhillstrailrides.com. Starting Friday, anyone can saddle up for a three-day trail ride starting at the Gant-Larson Ranch, 10 miles west of Medicine Lodge on U.S. 160. It’s not uncommon to come across a deer, wild turkey, coyote or bobcat. Visitors must provide their own horse, tack and camping equipment. The three-day ride costs $100 for adults and $75 for children under age 12. The popular equine trail competition starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. This includes an obstacle course filled with situations you might find on a ranch or trail, according to the website. A judge picks the winner. The last day includes a Sunday Cowboy Church and lunch at the end of the ride. If you can’t make this one, the Kerry Kuhn trail ride is from Sept. 19-21. Registration for this is at kerrykuhn.com. Or you can ride on your own. Visitors are given a map to the 10,000 acres of open trails. They also offer guided rides for 20 or more. The cost is $10 a day per person. GROWN-UPS: KNOW SWIM SAFETY TIPS WITH KIDS
It’s sure starting to feel like summer outside. In true Kansas-weather style, we recently went from winter straight to summer in a matter of days, if not hours. The quick warm-up has had many of us dreaming about cooling off in the swimming pool. The Hutch Recreation Commission’s Salt City Splash Aquatic Center opens on Memorial Day (Monday, May 26). While it’s a few weeks away, now is the perfect time to prepare yourself mentally for swim season – whether it’s at the Splash, a neighborhood or backyard pool, or the lake. May is National Water Safety Month, according to the National Recreation and Parks Association, which the Salt City Splash is affili-
Amy Conkling ated with. In 2012, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 137 children in the United States drowned in a swimming pool or spa between Memorial Day and Labor Day. An additional 168 children required emergency treatment for neardrowning incidents. Even more alarming, however, is that of those 137 youth drownings, 100 of them were younger than five years old. Of these, about 50 of them occurred shortly af-
ter the child had left an adult, which was usually less than five minutes. As a parent of both a preschooler and toddler – as well as a former swim teamer, lifeguard and pool manager – I can’t stress enough how important it is to teach your children to have a loving respect for the water. Like reading and writing, learning how to swim should be high on the list of life skills to teach your child. I hear from fellow parents from time to time that they think their child is too young to learn how to swim. Obviously, from the glaring statistic above – where more than 70 percent of the youth drownings were preschoolage and younger – it’s important to start the skill of
learning how to swim at a young age. The American Red Cross encourages parents of babies to start introducing them to the water as early as six months. In fact, some of our most popular swim lessons at the Splash include our parent-child classes that include the parent learning various water safety skills along with their baby or toddler. Swim lessons are only one small part of water safety, though. Perhaps the biggest lesson comes to us parents. Simply put, we must supervise our young children at all times when they’re in or around the water. Taking it one step further, we must be in the water – within arm’s reach – of our young children.

Maybe we as parents are the ones needing to find that loving respect for the water. Here are some simple reminders as you venture out to the pool this summer, whether it’s at the Salt City Splash or a backyard pool or lake. If you can’t commit to watching your young children at all times around the water, you may need to rethink your swimming plans and not go at all. Sounds harsh, but we as parents and guardians are the best defense against water-related accidents and drownings. Here are some tips for parents with young children (the Salt City Splash defines a young child as one being age 7 and younger): ● Never leave your child alone when they are near the water – they should be
constantly supervised. Salt City Splash staff require parents or supervisors to be with their child 7 and younger within arm’s reach at all times. ● Teach your young child to always ask permission to go near water. ● Avoid distractions when supervising children around the water. Don’t bring a magazine or book to read on the side. Put your phone out of reach. (Why would you want it near the water, anyway?) Amy Conkling is the marketing director at the Hutchinson Recreation Commission and loves nothing more than splashing with her kiddos at the pool several times a week in the summer. She can be reached at aconkling@hutchrec.com.
