A ‘BEAUTY’FUL BALLET

BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee ryanc@hutchnews.com The Wichita Grand Opera is hoping to ring in the new year with a bang when it opens its 2014 season this weekend. The local operatic company is welcoming back the acclaimed Russian National Ballet Theatre, which last year entertained a packed Century II audience in “Swan Lake,” for what it expects will be another big draw: Tchaikovsky’s classic “Sleeping Beauty.” “For the first time, we have them on the weekend,” WGO President and CEO Parvan Bakardiev said of the RNBT. “Usually, the big cities get them on the weekend, but I have been very loyal to them and they decided to let me have them.” Fifty dancers will work to bring to life the story that Disney helped cement into popular culture with its 1959 animated feature film, although the original story does vary slightly. Furious that she wasn’t invited to the christening ceremony for the king and queen’s new baby girl, the evil fairy Carabosse arrives with a clap of thunder and places a curse on Princess Aurora – performed by Maria Sokolnikova – proclaiming that upon the child’s 16th birthday, the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Much to the relief of the revelers, however, the Lilac Fairy intervenes, altering the curse so Aurora instead will sleep for 100 years.

THE HIVE

SEE ‘NEBRASKA’; ‘WOLF,’ ‘WALTER MITTY’ ARE IFFY

I’ve seen five of the recently released Christmas offerings, and by far the best so far is a rare black-andwhite movie called “Nebraska.” It’s unlikely to come to Hutchinson but is well worth a trip to Wichita, and it will probably wind up on my list of 10 best for the justended year. Most of the buzz about this film centers around the performance by 77-year-old Bruce Dern as Woody, an aging and contrary resident of Billings, Mont., who is convinced he has won a million dollars in the Publisher’s Cleaning House magazine promotion. Of course, he hasn’t and he didn’t read or understand the fine print, but nothing seemingly will stop Woody’s pilgrimage to Lincoln, Neb., where he (despite pleadings from his family) fully expects to pick up his winnings. Along the way, in several towns that look as much like Kansas as our neighbor to the north, Woody and his son, David, played by Will Forte, run into long-lost relatives and friends, many eager to share in Woody’s financial fortunes. There is an exceptional, scene-stealing performance by June Squibb as Woody’s cynical wife, Kate, and one highly

memorable episode at a cemetery that sets Squibb apart from the other actors, including Dern. Director Alexander Payne puts together soulful characters and a brilliant portrayal of aging in Nebraska, worthy of four stars and my highest recommendation. Another new film, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” brings a huge overabundance of excesses in telling the partially true story of Jordan Belford, a co-writer of the script, who is caught up in Wall Street scandals and is one of the most worthless characters ever brought to the screen. This film redefines what is over-the-top. Martin Scorsese’s 3-hour-long movie could easily have told the same story with 45 minutes edited out, but the director spares nothing, from graphic nudity and sexual situations to drug promotion and about as much offensive language as most ears can take. While Matthew McConaughey has a short opening role, this film is largely Leonardo DiCaprio on extreme steroids, perhaps good enough for an Oscar nomination but guaranteed to offend. It is about as hard an R movie as allowed before dipping into the X category, with little redeeming value in the star-

ring role. Two and a half stars and a strong warning that most of you won’t like what you see and hear in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Playing in Hutchinson is one of the year’s strangest movies, based on James Thurber’s book, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Filled with fantasies by Walter, played by Ben Stiller, the film offers Kristen Wiig as Walter’s love interest, Shirley MacLaine in one of the most unaccomplished roles of her distinguished career, and a hardly recognizable Sean Penn, who barely appears at the end, using seconds rather than minutes of screen time. The opening and closing credits are creative and interesting, but most of the movie is just plain weird. However, the closing three minutes – in which the contents of a missing photo-negative are revealed as Life magazine goes out of print existence – at least give meaning and purpose to the otherwise perplexing and largely unbelievable story. One and a half stars for “Walter,” and you can do a lot better with other holiday offerings than spending time with this one. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

OPERA FROM PAGE 1

Maria Sokolnikova and the Russian National Ballet Theatre will perform “Sleeping Beauty” on Sunday at Century II.

As foretold, Aurora meets her fate during her comingof-age party. Falling victim to the prick of a spindle hidden inside a bouquet of flowers given to her by an old woman revealed to be Carabosse, Aurora and the rest of the kingdom fall asleep. One hundred years later, hope arrives in the form of Prince Desire, who is sent a vision of Aurora by the

Lilac Fairy. “We have a great cast in that production (and) great sets,” Bakardiev said. “Hopefully, people will enjoy what they see, because so many people, especially little girls, dream of being a princess.” While “Sleeping Beauty” is the season’s official opener, the public can get an idea of what to expect a night early when local Public Broadcasting Service affiliate KPTS Channel 8 airs a performance of last season’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at 9 p.m. Saturday.

THEATRE GUILD CAMPAIGN EYES WRAP-UP BY KRISTEN RODERICK For The Bee kroderick@hutchnews.com

The Hutchinson Theatre Guild is ready to move into its new home. It is just asking for a final fundraising push to help give it its final touches. The Theatre Guild started an Indiegogo capital campaign to complete renovation on its building, Stage 9, at 9 S. Main St. The funding will help complete tiling, wall repair, art and decorations in the lobby; stage, lighting equipment, sound equipment, seating preparations, floor and wall treatments in the main hall; dressing-room finishes, scene shop finishing and tools for backstage; general building repairs; and a $15,000 repay loan that was used for construction. Any excess cash will go toward contingency, maintenance and scholarship funds.

WANT TO CONTRIBUTE? Hutchinson Theatre Guild fundraising campaign Online: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/htg-capitalimprovement-and-endowment Mail: Hutchinson Theatre Guild, P.O. Box 993, Hutchinson, KS 67504-0993 More info: Call the guild at 316-350-PLAY (7529) or email hutchinsontheatreguild@gmail.com. Charles Johnston, production coordinator for the guild, set up the fund last week, with a $25,000 goal. In the first week, the campaign has raised $1,400. “It’s not bad for the first week,” he said. “It’s a good way to increase visibility not only locally, but globally. Anyone who has the Internet can see it.” People who donate $50 or more will get a perk for their contribution, but any amount will do. Contributors may purchase a seat for $300 and they can sponsor a dressing room for $1,000. An $8,000 contributor is a sea-

son sponsor, who will receive prominent listing on all shows and season publicity, an entry for eight on invite-only nights and eight tickets to a show. The guild will also accept donations like paint, painting supplies, wood, clothing, props, art fixtures, and sound and lighting equipment. The guild’s first production at Stage 9 is “The Kitchen Witches.” Auditions for the show are on Jan. 4 and 5 at the theater. Roles are available for two women between the ages of 40 and 70, a man in his late

30s, 30s or 40s, and one person who can be played by either a male or female, aged late teens and up. The production is Feb. 1316 and 20-23. Also on the schedule for the 2014 season are “Lucky Stiff,” “Nickel and Dimed” and “The Other Desert Cities.”

HUTCHBEE.COM PAGE 5 But that’s not the only way to catch a WGO production on the cheap. A special “Friends & Family Package” is being offered that provides a 25 percent discount when purchasing four or more tickets to one or more productions throughout the season. The move specifically is aimed at those who otherwise might not be able to attend a show.

“Opera and ballet are very expensive (genres to produce),” Bakardiev said, which is why ticket prices typically are pricier than other forms of entertainment. But to hear him tell it, the experience is unlike anything else available. “To see it live is to see the human achievement of people who can dance for 2½ hours with grace and stamina,” Bakardiev said.

2014 BRINGS SOME LOCAL FUN I’ll admit: The first week of the year always seems a little slow in the entertainment world. Christmas festivities are long done and the winter woes start to sink in. Even the calendar – calendar.hutchnews.com – seems light on activities. But I don’t think it’s ever empty. You just have to know where to look. You can always check out “The Great Gatsby” at the Fox Theatre. I remember reading the book in high school. It was probably my favorite on the requiredreading list. Bargain hunters can check out the flea market in the Meadowlark Building at

Kristen Roderick the Kansas State Fairgrounds. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Then, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dublin-based photographer Dave McKane will have an opening reception for his exhibit “Beyond Repair” at the Hutchinson Public Library, 901 N. Main St. McKane will be here to talk about his most recent project, and he will give background about some of

the salvage-yard shots in the exhibition. There are also several movies coming out. Geoffrey Rush returns to the big screen on Friday with “The Best Offer.” Thrill-seekers can check out “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” A film based on one of my favorite book series – “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” – will hit the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center’s Carey Digital Dome Theatre soon. And if you want an educational experience there, check out some of the documentaries – “Hidden Universe” and “Jerusalem.” Have an exciting, activity-filled week!
