MANY ‘TREASURES’ IN SCOTT CO. AD TRI RO

Last week when Rob Jones came through Reno County on his cross-country trip on his bicycle, he asked me to give him tips about Kansas. If you didn’t catch the story, Jones is a Marine veteran who lost both of his legs below the knee after an improvised explosive device detonated under him overseas. He relearned to walk and ride his bike. He is now heading across the United States to tell his story and raise $1 million for three charities that helped him. Of course, when he was in Reno County, I talked about the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Strataca (the underground salt museum) and other excellent wonders Hutchinson has to offer. Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to come to Hutchinson but said he’d be back. He was heading through Larned, Dighton and Scott City. Of course I had tips for that area. I’m from western Kansas, and that part of the state has its own treasures. I’ve written plenty about Fort Larned, so I’ll leave that be. But what about Scott County? It’s more than just the home to Wichita State basketball standout Ron Baker. Check out the El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City, where you can learn about

the El Quartelejo pueblo ruins of the late 1600s and the history of the nomadic Indians from the 1500s. Kids can try their hand at fossil research while digging in a fossil-filled sandbox. Check out Scott State Park just north of Scott City. Anyone who thinks western Kansas is flat should check it out. The lake sits in a val-

TV VIEWER SAYS HURRAY FOR ‘HANNIBAL’

Despite many duds in 2013’s lineup of new shows, NBC has found a hit with “Hannibal,” and creator Bryan Fuller has made one of the most entertaining new shows of recent memory. The first season was recently released to DVD and the second season begins on Feb. 28 at 9 p.m. Also the creator of “Dead Like Me” and “Pushing Daisies,” Fuller goes the prequel route by focusing on the early years of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter, based on the characters in Thomas Harris’ novels, including “Red Dragon” and “Silence of the Lambs.” While many prequels seem constrained by a predestined ending, “Hannibal” manages to not only shake up a few facts from the books but also creates an interesting friendship dynamic between Will and Hannibal before the events of the other books and films. For those unfamiliar with the material, the show focuses on FBI Special Agent Will Graham, a criminal profiler with the ability to get into killers’ minds, with obvious

detriment to his mental health. On the other hand, there is Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a former trauma surgeon and acclaimed psychiatrist with a dark secret: In his spare time, he is not only a serial killer but a cannibal. Delivering strong performances, the leads both pull their weight throughout the first season. Hugh Dancy, as Will, effectively conveys a man slowly losing his sanity. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Mads Mikkelsen is the epitome of cool, always one step ahead of his colleagues and victims. Both sinister and personable at the same time, Mikkelsen proves how he won the title role over many other deserving actors. Also of note, Laurence Fishburne, as Will’s boss, Jack Crawford, provides a sense of normalcy to the somewhat eccentric characters who fill the show. Praise must also be said for the cinematography and visual style of the series, which never lets you lose interest. With the first season finished and the second season on the horizon, I’m filled

with anticipation for what’s to come. Fuller has stated a bold plan for seven potential

seasons, and if the show manages to stay half as gripping as what we’ve seen so

far, I’m in. Three and a half out of four; it’s definitely worth a purchase and it’s

MUSEUM TO SHOW ART BOUND FOR REPLICA OF SATURN V

THE BEE displayed at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center from Saturday through March 31. There will be more than 300 pieces of space-themed artwork by 1,632 students from 23 schools. The art ranges from the Curiosity rover, space travel, the solar system and planets to the Apollo program and space vehicles and technology,

plus more, according to a release. Visitors can see the exhibit with the purchase of a Hall of Space Museum pass. It will be on display during the open house on Feb. 9. wrap the 363-foot replica. Submissions have been received by 17 countries, 46 states and 363 communities. The art has already been displayed in 134 libraries, schools, museums and community centers. The Saturn V replica is expected to stay wrapped from May 1 through June 30, 2015, according to thedreamrocket.com.
