This image released by PBS shows Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, left, and Martin Freeman as Watson are shown in a scene from the BBC series “Sherloc.”
UNCOVER EXCELLENT TV WITH ‘SHERLOCK’ The BBC has consistently proven they make some of the best dramatic television around, and nothing shows that off better than “Sherlock,” with all three seasons available on DVD and for streaming on Netflix. The show follows the exploits of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson as they solve crimes together from their downtown apartment in London. Stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have wonderful chemistry as Holmes and Watson, respectively. Cumberbatch embodies the
role of Holmes perfectly and almost effortlessly; Freeman makes Watson a wonderful everyman and an excellent foil to the brilliant Holmes. Praise must also go to Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat for not only creating the show but also serving as two of its head writers. The show has some of the best written dialogue and situations of any series in recent memory, filled with comedy, drama and action, although never too much of one element. Another wonderful element of the show is the cinematography, which is always stunning without too many fast cuts to make your
head spin. The music and score are well done; it only adds to the experience, as it never overpowers the show. Recently renewed for a fourth season, the show has set an exceptionally high bar for itself. It will be interesting to see if it manages to stay as fresh and original as it has so far. While the fourth season won’t start until 2016, it will give new viewers time to catch up and anticipate more episodes as much as I am. It’s an excellent program definitely worth viewing; four out of four stars. ALEX KEEL Hutchinson

CONCERTS CONTINUE TO GET BIGGER AND BETTER
This past Saturday, Concerts for the Cause set its biggest attendance record yet. The weekly event on Saturday nights in Avenue A Park just keeps getting bigger and better. If you’ve never been to a CFTC event, you are missing something because you just never know what will happen. Last Saturday one of the bands donated some inflatables to the Salvation Army, and these were set up for the children in the park to enjoy. The inflatables were quite popular, as was the splash park just over the bridge. There were fire spinners during VOS’s performance. It was pretty spectacular as the evening wound down to darkness. The evening’s music began with Fraktured Black from Salina. Their music is smooth and just great to listen to. I was somewhat shocked when they classified their sound as hard rock. I could detect elements of that in their lyrics and with the sound, but their music goes way beyond the hard-rock genre. To classify them as a
typical hard-rock band doesn’t do their music justice. Many dismiss hard rock and don’t give it a chance. In fact, where I was sitting there was a group of folks who had come to hear one of the other bands and wasn’t very happy about having to sit through a “hard rock” band. But that all changed once the music began. The little group bebopped in their seats to the tunes that Fraktured Black delivered. You’d have been hard-pressed to find anyone in the park who wasn’t
totally into the music. This group has redefined what “hard rock” means. Up next was Godzillionaire, and as the name implies, they came from “outta Hutch space.” The band is from Lawrence and trampled their way through town to the gazebo at the park. Unlike their pseudo namesake, who just makes lots of raucous noise, these guys can really sing and play great music. They classify themselves as “heavy space rock,” but to classify this group as heavy rock misses the mark. Their sound is unique, and you can tell that from the very first taste of their lyrics. If the crowd could have gotten them to play longer, they would have. Hopefully they’ll be back again soon, because they’ve already begun to establish a fan following in Hutchinson. I heard from quite a few people who felt the band was wasting their time in Lawrence. They should just move here and play in venues around Hutchinson. A statement like that says a lot. Then it was time for VOS, a.k.a. Victims of Spotlight, to take the stage. It happens everywhere: VOS shows up and the park, the bar, whatever venue they play, fills up with fans. Many of those in the park had come at 7 p.m. because they didn’t know what time VOS would play and they didn’t want to miss them. Saturday’s concert did not disappoint. The guys were in fine form and played what has become their signature song, “Twilight Zone,” to round out their set. The crowd hung on and wouldn’t let them leave. It was so hot outdoors, but the guys took a quick break and did a few more songs for the fans. The fans hung in there, waiting through the break. If you haven’t been to a CFTC event, come down to Avenue A Park on Saturday nights from 7 to 10 p.m. through the end of August and check out the event. Every week there’s a different charity to support, great music, food, drinks and fun. Plus, you’ll probably see most of your friends and neighbors there, too. LYDIA LOWE Hutchinson

YOUNG ACTORS RECEIVE TOUGHNESS TRAINING FOR ‘OUTSIDERS’ BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee
ryanc@hutchnews.com
Ponyboy Curtis, played by Tracy Geddes, talks to a teacher while writing a theme for school during a scene from “The Outsiders,” which opens today.
As a young man, Danny Mason “lived to fight.” “It didn’t matter who,” Mason recalled this week from the quaint confines of the Flag Theatre, where he’s been helping serve as stage manager and historian for the Family Community Theatre’s production of “The Outsiders,” the opening show in the local theater company’s 26th season. But perhaps more importantly, he’s been sharing stories of his experiences with the young cast and imparting to them how their characters in the classic, gang-related story should think, feel and behave. “I’ve been showing them how to walk – that’s a big one; they still don’t get it – and, in some cases, how to talk,” he said. Growing up in Wichita in the 1960s, Mason often ran afoul of the law. While more closely related to the blue-collar Greasers in S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age tale than the well-to-do Socs – short for Socials – Mason went by a different name. “I was a hood,” he said – “one that caused trouble.” Mason’s recollections have come in handy in helping bridge the 50-year gap between the world today and that of Ponyboy Curtis, his brothers Sodapop and “Darry” and his friends Dallas and “Two-Bit.” One gets the impression he could likely talk for days about his dangerous past, but there are many aspects of his former life he prefers to keep to himself. “There are some things my wife doesn’t even know,” he said with a mischievous smile. “Let’s just say I’ve seen my share of jail.” Still, he’s appreciative of the opportunity. “It’s been fun for me,” he said. “It’s been bringing back memories, some things I’d like to forget. ... Thank goodness we changed.” The story of “The Outsiders” is a little darker

than the usual FCT performance, admitted Nathan Geuy, who is making his directorial debut. The play closely follows Hinton’s story, as Ponyboy (played by Tracy Geddes) and his fellow Greasers constantly scuffle with the rival Socs. The action comes to a head when Ponyboy and Johnny (Jared Shuff) are attacked by Bob (Tristan
Geddes) and other drunk Socs. In the heat of the moment, Johnny stabs and kills Bob, necessitating that he and Ponyboy go into hiding at an abandoned church. The FCT has struggled in recent years to attract males, said Geuy, who also is a member of the board of directors, and it was for that reason the board chose the

Colladay estimates the group, which in the past also has included Matt Parks and Kansas-born national recording artist Sky Smeed, has traveled nearly 600 miles to give 35 performances, raising more than $1,300 for the Hutchinson Zoo’s new otter exhibit and the Red Tent Book Club Scholarship Fund for nontraditional HCC students. This year, they’ll be gathering tips in support of Third Thursday. “Generally, by the time I have all the venues on board, I have about 20 hours of research and phone calls and

Given the members’ friendship and history of playing together, there is little practice time beforehand, Colladay said, typically only a brief rehearsal the night before the tour.
In place of that rehearsal this year, the ukulele enthusiasts will hold a short performance during Third Thursday on July 17, playing at 6 p.m. in the Talon Theater, 11 W. Ave. B, before the screening of a movie documenting their travels last year, complete with free popcorn. The real tour begins July 19, however. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Scukesters
will play their first in a series of 30-minute free concerts before collecting their tips, packing up and setting off for their next destination atop their trusty scooters – or, in the case of Schimming, a Harley, although he will be forced to ride as slowly as the rest, Colladay said. The process repeats itself until the group returns to Hutch for a finale 12 hours later, at which time they will present their earnings to a Third Thursday representative. While the Scukesters have nearly exhausted the list of locations within close proximity to Hutch, Colladay admits he soon might be forced to expand his options. “My ultimate goal, and hopefully somebody doesn’t steal my idea, is to do a continuous tour through all incorporated cities in Kansas,” he said, adding “I’d have to take a leave of absence (from work).” There also are plans to bring the tour to Minnesota in alternating years because of Parks’ relocation to the state. The annual jaunts around the open road likely will continue, though, “as long as I can find vendors to host it,” Colladay said.
