‘ELYSIUM’ FLAWED BUT ENTERTAINING While not quite the sci-fi masterpiece that director Neill Blomkamp provided with “District 9,” his second feature film, “Elysium,” is packed with action, top-notch special effects and good performances by its actors. The film is set on Earth 140 years in the future; overpopulation has led to the poor majority living on a trash-filled Earth while the rich live on a space station orbiting the planet. To give away anymore would be to ruin the plot as the story is a little light; however, the actors do the best with the material they have. Matt Damon proves a sympathetic protagonist; however, it’s Sharlto Copley as the psy-

chotic “Kruger” who steals the show with his intense performance. The story is adequate, but most folks go to a big-budget movie for the spectacle and “Elysium” does not disappoint. Similar to his last movie, Blomkamp does an incredible job mixing his computer-generated imagery with real-life actors and sets. At times, the effects are so seamless you’ll wonder how they got the robots to look so realistic. More praise goes to the cinematography for framing scenes well and in creating interesting angles while avoiding the fast-cut edits that plague many films in modern cinema. The musical score isn't too much to

write home about; although, it’s never too intrusive. Overall “Elysium” proves that director Blomkamp isn’t a one-hit wonder; with his next film set to come out in 2015, also sci-fi themed, it would seem he

has nowhere to go but up. For a slam-bang thriller ride at 109 minutes, you could do a lot worse. Three stars out of four, worth a rental but maybe not a purchase. ALEX KEEL Hutchinson

SLATE OF GREAT SPEAKERS TO MARK MLK OBSERVANCE MOVIES DOESN’T INCLUDE ‘DAVIS’ BY THE BEE STAFF

Hutchinson has three excellent movies playing at the Mall 8, each appealing to a distinctively different audience but all worthy of consideration. The previously reviewed and lauded “Frozen,” which has the makings of a Disney classic for the young and young-at-heart, is my choice for 2013’s best animation. Another Disney studio production – one aimed at adults who remember the “Mary Poppins” era – finally arrived locally with “Saving Mr. Banks,” which offers a heartwarming and interesting story. Tom Hanks, as Walt Disney, and Emma Thompson, as the English author of a script that Disney has a dickens of a time getting his hands on, provide plenty of screen talent. But the big picture that opened this past weekend – one that is likely to continue for several weeks – is “Lone Survivor.” It is the most emotional picture I have seen for some time. While uncomfortable (some would say more so than many people want to endure), it is a movie that needs to be seen by those who have never been in combat or a war setting. It helps us better appreciate the sacrifices that have been made and are still ongoing by the American military in Afghanistan and elsewhere. It is so emotional because it tells a true story and is mostly accurate since a Navy Seal survivor, Marcus Luttrell, wrote the book and was a consultant on the movie. This is not an awardwinning film for how it was put together (other than the combat footage), or its acting or script. In spots, the sound is difficult to follow. Luttrell was one of four Seals to survive a mission to kill a Taliban leader. The mission went very wrong after the commander, unable to communicate for instructions or help because of radio failure, chose the moral high road to free rather than kill native enemies who stumbled onto their location. The mission had to be scrubbed and the four Seals were soon surrounded and subjected to savage attack. It also shows how other Seals and rescue personnel died in a helicopter crash while trying to rescue Luttrell. If the graphic battle scenes and heroic action of villagers who found and saved Luttrell aren’t enough, the movie ends with a pictorial tribute to those who died. It is a fitting but almost impossible-not-to-shed-atear closure to a very-hardto-watch but important film for those not emotionally traumatized by war. And it is made more difficult by knowing that this really happened and that 22 brave heroes, with productive good lives ahead of them, died. Three and a

half stars and a strong recommendation for “Lone Survivor.” If you go to movies for exceptional acting and a well-written/executed script, then schedule a trip for “August: Osage County” in Wichita. But an uplifting, inspiring story it is not, and you will have to endure the most dysfunctional family put on film in recent memory. There’s an abundant use of the f-word and other profanities that are probably necessary to tell this twisted story but which are nonetheless offensive to many moviegoers. Both Meryl Streep, as a dying, profane wife and mother, and Julia Roberts, as one of her equally profane and outspoken daughters, deserve Academy Award nominations. Choosing one as the primary actress and the other as “supporting” is difficult. The remaining cast is also high-caliber, with several emotional and dramatic scenes among the best I have watched from 2013 films. Because it was originally a Broadway production but now takes place in rural Oklahoma, some national reviewers say “Osage County” is too stagy. I disagree, especially for those seeing the movie but not the play. Is it likely that any single family could have as many problems as portrayed in this show? No. But is it an entertaining film that is brilliant to watch unfold, spoiled only by an ending that I feel should have stopped several scenes earlier. Overall: three and a half stars and another candidate for my “top 10” list from last year. Another movie that you will have to visit Wichita to see – and one that, in my opinion, is not worth the effort – is “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Despite rave national reviews, I found the show to have a hard-to-follow focus and far from what some claim is the meaningful story of a folk singer who, in the early 1960s, is stuck with music and love problems in Greenwich Village. The lack of character development and any real plot I could identify with left me thinking this show must be for those much smarter and perceptive because, frankly, I just didn’t get it. There are a lot of really good movies out now, but I don’t believe many people in this part of the country will be attracted to “Llewyn Davis” despite a smattering of listenable folk music and a breakout performance by Oscar Isaac. His portrayal is significantly better than the overall film, which I can only rate with 1 star. It starts virtually nowhere and, an hour and 44 minutes later, winds up in the same place. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

It will be a reflection of remembrance, celebration and action Sunday and Monday as Hutchinson remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Rev. J.A. Reed Jr., from Fairview Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, will be the keynote speaker at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Stringer Fine Arts Center of Hutchinson Community College. Reed joined the ministry in August 1957. He was elected as president of the Oklahoma Baptist State Congress of Christian Education in 1974, serving until 2000. In October 2000, Reed was elected president of the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention, where he continues to serve. He was also the fifth vice president of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. There will be performances by HCC’s Badinage, the Hutchinson High School mass choir, Buhler High School choir and the Emancipation Day Youth Choir of Hutchinson. At 2 p.m. Monday, A’Jay Scipio of Topeka will be the main speaker at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 1008 N. Ford St.

An ‘app-solute’ overview for iPhone users The thought of my phone being more than an arm’s reach away at any given time is unfathomable. Essentially the stuff nightmares are made of. My iPhone is so much more than a single-purpose device. I use it in pretty much all aspects of my life. It plays the soundtrack to my life. It’s my personal weatherman. For the news junkie in me, it’s an up-tothe-minute ticker of quality updates. My iPhone is a banker, a navigator and so much more. Much like the music on my phone, apps are a matter of personal taste, but I’ve come to find that some of the best are actually the free ones. The social networks There’s the ever-popular Facebook (and its offshoot apps), Twitter, Instagram. Obviously there are many, many more. They’re great for sharing the ins, outs, odds, ends and spelling errors of daily life. They can also be a huge distraction and time-suck. The best way to prevent these social apps from taking over your life is to turn off push notifications to prevent them from interrupting you. Newer social apps like SnapChat have added more fun as users can send photos that essentially self-destruct after 10 or fewer seconds. Please use social apps responsibly. Hitting “Send” once can easily change your life forever. Google it I like Google for many things ... just not an operating system. Apps like YouTube, Gmail, Google Earth and Google Maps are a must for any iPhone. No

specific, say a fantasy team.

Tim Schrag further explanation needed. Music Obviously there’s the music app, which, depending on how much music you own, may dictate if you actually use it. For those needing a more extensive library, try apps like Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio and Songza. They’ve got millions of songs worth streaming. Then again, so does iTunes radio, found on the music app. QR codes ... really? Ugh. People still use those? QR Reader is simple and it’s free. Don’t get tricked into buying something. The free option News: I suppose the bylaws of synergy demand that I mention The News has an app. Download it today and enjoy our stories on the go. ● Sports: It’s probably no surprise that the top-grossing app in the world of sports is ESPN’s SportsCenter, formerly called ScoreCenter. It’s a customizable app that allows you to track your favorite teams. It also will send push notifications about breaking sports news as it happens in real time. If that’s not your style, try Yahoo Sports. It’s also customizable and graphically pleasing. Really, between these two apps there isn’t much more you need unless you’re really into something ●

Get angry If you ask me, pretty much anything made by Rovio Mobile is worth a download – even the apps that cost $0.99. I’ve spent many an hour playing the various “Angry Birds” games – and I’ve loved every anger-inducing moment of it. These birds just get me. Luckily, most of the newer games like “Angry Birds Star Wars II” and “Angry Birds Go!” are free. I could go on for inches, but instead I’ll leave you with this: If you don’t like iTunes, go explore Google’s Play store. Tim Schrag is a copy editor and page designer for The Hutchinson News. CHILDREN OF MARVIN GAYE, SONY SETTLE IN ‘BLURRED LINES’ CASE BY MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer NEW YORK – Marvin Gaye’s children have settled claims against a music company owned by Sony over Robin Thicke’s Grammynominated hit song “Blurred Lines.” The Gayes had accused EMI of not pursuing a copy-

right infringement case against Thicke because “Blurred Lines” has similarities to Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up.” A Los Angeles judge on Tuesday granted Nona Marvisa Gaye and Frankie Christian Gaye’s dismissal of their lawsuit against EMI, which is owned by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Documents say the

Gayes and Sony have an agreement and claims against Sony can’t be brought again. A representative for the Gaye family said the terms of the settlement were confidential. Dueling lawsuits between the Gaye family and Thicke remain active. Thicke and his collaborators T.I. and Pharrell

Williams asked a federal judge in August to rule they didn’t copy “Got to Give It Up” for “Blurred Lines,” which is nominated for record of the year and other awards at the Jan. 26 Grammy Awards. Their song has sold 6.6 million tracks and was last year’s biggest hit. It spent 12 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
