MUSIC ARTIST SMITH AIMS TO STIR FAITH BY GARY DEMUTH Special to The Bee
As children, Michael W. Smith and his sister used to drive their parents crazy by pulling out Christmas albums on the first of September and playing them constantly for the next three months. So it’s no surprise that when Smith grew up and became one of the most successful contemporary Christian musicians in the world, Christmas concerts would become a staple of his touring schedule. “I love Christmas music,” he said. “I love singing it, I love playing it, and every night one of the highlights for me is hearing the audience sing these great Christmas songs.” Smith is a three-time Grammy Award winner and has been awarded 40 Dove Awards for Christian music in his 30-year career. Best known for his 1991 crossover hit “Place in This World,” Smith has sold more than 13 million albums and recorded 29 No. 1 hit songs on the Christian charts. He’s also the author of 12 books. Throughout his career, Smith said his Christian faith has shaped everything he’s done in his life and his music. “My goal is to encourage people and help them un-

Beyond his dreams Thirty years into his successful career, Smith said he could never have scripted or even dreamed of some of the things he’s gotten to do. “The friendships I’ve formed, and some of the people I’ve been privileged to meet, still surprise me,” he said. “I’ll never forget going to a military hospital with President (George W.) Bush late at night with no media, to be with him as he pinned Purple Heart medals on some of our nation’s bravest and best.”

Singer Angie Miller, the third-place finalist on season 12 of “American Idol,” will open for Smith. Smith, 56, grew up in West Virginia MILLER and developed a love of music through his church, learning to play piano and sing in the church choir from an early age. At the age of 10, he said, he had an intense spiritual experience that led to him becoming a devout Christian. He moved to Nashville in the late 1970s, where he played keyboards for a
Christian band named Higher Ground and signed a songwriting contract with a local publishing company. In 1982, he was recruited to play keyboards in a band backing Christian recording artist Amy Grant. Hits keep coming Smith’s first solo album, titled “The Michael W. Smith Project,” was released in 1983 and featured
the best-selling song “Friends.” He also has written gospel hits for artists such as Grant, Bill Gaither, Sandi Patty and Kathy Troccoli. After releasing the crossover hit “Place in This World” in 1991, Smith followed with other hits that included “I Will Be Here for You,” “Love of My Life” (a collaboration with singer/pianist Jim Brick-
man) and “This is Your Time,” a 1999 song inspired by Cassie Bernall, a Christian student killed in the school massacre at Columbine, Colo. His newest release is “Glory,” an all-instrumental album released in 2011 that features a 65-piece London orchestra. Smith said he’s in the middle of recording a new album due to be released in May.
Meaning of Christmas Smith said he hopes people leave his concerts feeling more encouraged and hopeful. “I also want people to know that worship isn’t just something that happens inside the four walls of a church,” he said. “I want to encourage people to help the homeless, the widow, the orphans. There is so much good work to do right in our own neighborhoods. And with this concert, I want them to be able to get away from the craziness that surrounds Christmas and truly celebrate the meaning of Christmas.”

HUTCH NATIVE BEHIND DC HOLIDAY SURPRISE BY THE BEE STAFF
Visitors to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., recently were treated to some surprise holiday cheer courtesy of a Hutchinson native and a 120-piece band. The unexpected concert on Dec. 3 was the dream child of Chief Master Sgt. Jebodiah Eaton, a 1990 graduate of Hutchinson High School and current producer of the U.S. Air Force Band. Starting with a solo EATON cellist and ballooning to 120 musicians performing a five-minute original arrangement of “Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring/Joy to the World” led by the band’s commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang, it was the first flash mob to be produced by one of the five military branches’ top bands. “I wanted to produce the flash mob at a recognizable location in Washington, D.C.,” Eaton said in a news release. “When the National Air and Space Museum agreed to partner with us, we knew it would be the perfect setting to kick off our holiday concert series.”
Unsuspecting museum visitors were astonished as instrumentalists streamed into the gallery from behind airplanes and space capsules, and vocalists burst into song from the museum’s second-floor balcony. Eaton studied business and theater at Hutchinson Community College and was named the school’s Outstanding Technical Assistant from 1990 to 1992. He also served as president of the Delta Psi Omega fraternity. From 1992 to 1993, he attended the University of

EVENTS SURE TO PUT YOU IN HOLIDAY MOOD It’s “the most wonderful time of the year” for some. For others, it’s the busiest. For me, it’s just Thursday. I’m not quite in the holiday spirit just yet. Sure, I’ve put up a tree in my apartment and occasionally listen to music. (If you’re looking for a great Christmas album, I recommend Cee Lo Green’s “Magic Moment.” His rendition of “Mary, Did You Know?” is one of the best I’ve ever heard.) I’ve even done a bit of Christmas shopping, but I’m just not in the seasonal spirit just yet. Frankly, it’s hard to get into the holiday spirit when it seems to start earlier and earlier. Enough of the Bah Humbugs. There’s no fun in being a Grinch anyway. Don’t worry; I’ll get there. Even if it means having to
Tim Schrag watch every Christmas movie ABC Family can throw at me. Luckily, there are plenty of Christmas and holidaythemed events going on to help shake off the Scrooge and get in the spirit. Hutchinson Symphony presents “A Rockin’ Christmas,” 7:30 p.m., the Fox Theatre, 18 E. First Ave. I know what you’re thinking: “Symphony ... snore.” Well, think again. The concert has an array of symphonic works, including Berlioz’s bombastic “Roman Carnival Overture,” Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” and Vivaldi’s always thrilling “Winter” from “Four Seasons.” It will also feature local and regional sound from Fort Hays State University professor of violin Matthew Means as soloist and a special guest appearance by Hutchinson High School’s choral director, Jarl More-
land. The second half of the program will feature works by Mannheim Steamroller and many seasonal favorites. Ticket prices: Student tickets $10 and adult tickets $22. Hutch Rec has Saturday covered. Who says there’s nothing to do in Hutchinson? They lied. Just ask the folks at Hutch Rec. Christmas has arrived in Inman. I strongly recommend the quick jaunt over to Inman on Saturday. Every year the town puts on a live Nativity scene. The Nativity is definitely something to see at least once. Put it on your Kansas bucket list if you can’t make it over there Saturday night.
Growing up, I used to attend regularly with my family. The Nativity starts at 6 p.m. in the park. No need to fret about cold weather; it’s a drive-through. Along with the live Nativity scene, Inman has plenty of other activities throughout the day, including a toy run and chili feed. Might be the perfect way to get out of town for a bit and get into the Christmas spirit. For more information, visit www.inmanks.org. Santa Claus is coming to TECH. Who wants to meet St. Nick at Pizza Ranch? Yep, Pizza Ranch, 1805 E. 17th Ave. TECH is hosting a breakfast buffet with the jolliest man there is from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Cost: Children (12 and under) are $5 and adults are $7. All proceeds benefit children and adults with disabilities in Reno County. The North Pole is actually in Kansas. The only noteworthy thing I thought existed in Russell was Bob Dole. I guess I was wrong. Turns out, Santa has been there all along. You never see the two in the same place at the same time though ... hmm ... anyway, just off I-70 and Highway 281 exists Christmas Wonderland, the crossroads to the North Pole. Located at Lana Zorn’s Triple J Campground, 187 Edwards St., see the most amazing Christmas light display, feed reindeer, ride a train, enjoy s’mores by the fire, and visit Kansas’ largest Christmas store with more than 50 decorating themes. There’s even live entertainment. Bring your family for pictures with Santa, a shopping experience that will add so much spirit to your season that you will be left in awe. They’re open every weekend from Thanksgiving to Dec. 23 (Fridays and Saturdays from 6-10 p.m. and Sundays from 5-8 p.m.) This is just a taste of Christmas events to come. The year is 1869. The wheat stood tall on the Kansas prairie. Sunsets painted the evening sky and a simple Christmas gift brought immense joy. It was a time that was slower and seemingly more graceful. And in its 10th season, Betsie Andrews hopes the biennial “Prairie Nutcracker” will continue to shine. “This is not just about Kansas,” she said. “It’s recalling what America can be.” Andrews wrote the ballet 13 years ago, bringing a Midwest theme into Tchaikovsky’s original “The Nutcracker.” Bob Wilhelm helped her authenticate the costumes and the storyline. Rick Kuethe, Boston, composed the original music for “Prairie Nutcracker.” He will be in the audience this weekend as the ballet is back

On the eve of what would have been his 100th birthday, lovers of celebrated Hutchinson-born writer William Stafford soon will have access to previously unpublished material. On Saturday, "Winterward," a posthumous publication of Stafford’s 1954 creative dissertation for his Ph.D from the University of Iowa, will go on sale. The book contains 35 poems com-
posed by Stafford during his time at the school’s Writers’ Workshop from autumn 1950 to summer 1952. Among the STAFFORD never-beforepublished material are 10 poems and a scholarly preface. “Winterward” is published by Tavern Books of Portland, Ore., a nonprofit dedicated to the revival of rare and out-of-
print poetry collections. Stafford was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Hutchinson. His family moved frequently during the Depression, and Stafford graduated from high school in Liberal in 1933. He later attended the University of Kansas, receiving his master’s in 1947. He achieved success late in life, at age 48, with “Traveling Through the Dark,” his first major collection of poetry, which won the 1963 National Book Award for Poetry.
Stafford was named Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress – now known as Poet Laureate – in 1970. Five years later, he was given the distinction of Poet Laureate of Oregon, where he spent much of his life while teaching at Lewis & Clark College. He died in Lake Oswego, Ore., in 1993 at age 79. “Winterward” will soon be available through the Tavern Books website, tavernbooks.com.

A Very Prairie Christmas package is also available through the Greater Hutchinson Convention/Visitors Bureau. It includes tickets to “Prairie Nutcracker,” one night at the Hampton Inn, a $25 gift card, a gift card for dinner, dessert and more. “Prairie Nutcracker” is not recommended for children ages 3 and younger.

Sarah Palin to host outdoors show BY DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer NEW YORK – The Sportsman Channel said Monday it has hired Sarah Palin to be host of a weekly outdoors-oriented program that will celebrate the “red, wild and blue” lifestyle. The proPALIN gram, “Amazing America,” will debut next April. The Sportsman Channel is in some 32 million homes, less than onethird of American households with television, with programming geared to people interested in hunting, fishing and shooting. Palin’s show will include a series of stories about personalities and activities in that vein. “It’s very important to have somebody of her stature as a personality on Sportsman because it validates the whole category for
everybody,” said Gavin Harvey, network CEO. The Sportsman Channel has ordered 12 episodes of the series to start. It’s the first of a three-series deal between the network and the busy nonfiction production company Pilgrim Studios. “The network showcases a lifestyle that I love and celebrate every day and it’s great to be a part of their team,” Palin said in a statement provided by the network. Since her failed bid for the vice presidency in 2008, the former Alaska governor has worked as a commentator on Fox News Channel and was host of a short-lived series about her home state, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” that ran on the TLC network. Owners of The Sportsman Channel tried and failed this year to buy its chief competitor, the Outdoors Channel, which airs in slightly more households. The effort attracted some controversy because Leo Hindery Jr., a media executive whose com-
pany owns The Sportsman Channel, is a Democratic fundraiser and regarded warily by politically conservative outdoor enthusiasts who worried about what he might do to Outdoors. Some of the content on The Sportsman Channel suggests they shouldn’t be too concerned. Besides the upcoming Palin series, Sportsman airs a series with conservative activist and rock musician Ted Nugent. Sportsman also airs a TV version of the National Rifle Association-sponsored radio show, “NRA News, Cam & Co.,” each weekday and “NRA Guns & Gold,” a show about guns styled after “Antiques Roadshow.” Harvey said The Sportsman Channel has no interest in being politically polarizing. “It’s not our intention at Sportsman to take any political position,” he said. “This lifestyle, coast to coast, crosses every type of political spectrum.”

WICHITA GRAND OPERA LAUNCHES COLORING-BOOK CONTEST FOR KIDS BY THE BEE STAFF The Wichita Grand Opera has launched a new endeavor for kids as part of its Opera Education initiatives aimed at introducing children to the fun and excitement of opera and ballet. Intended for children ages 6 to 12, WGO created a coloring-book competition depicting scenes from the performances in the operatic company’s 2014 season. Entries will be separated into three age groups: 6 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each division. Children may use pencils, crayons, markers, paints or any other medium of their choice in coloring their submissions. The coloring book contains seven scenes taken from the five upcoming WGO productions: “Sleeping Beauty,” “William Tell,” “Tosca,” “Don Quixote” and “The Barber of Seville.” Entry forms and coloring books are now available. ORLANDO, Fla. – The rock bands Heart and Barenaked Ladies along with country singer Willie Nelson have canceled their planned performances at SeaWorld in Florida, citing the recent documentary “Blackfish,” which raises questions about the effects of captivity on whales. Joan Jett on Monday also joined the list of recording artists distancing themselves from the marine park when she sent a letter to SeaWorld President Jim Atchison asking that the park stop using her song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” as the opening music
for its “Shamu Rocks” show. “I’m among the millions who saw ‘Blackfish’ and am sickened that my music was blasted without my permission at sound-sensitive marine mammals,” Jett said in the letter. “Ms. Jett’s music is not currently part of any show, although it was played as walk-in music for the “Shamu Rocks” nighttime show at SeaWorld Orlando and was fully licensed for us to use,” spokesman Nick Gollattscheck said in an email. “A new nighttime Shamu show is being designed for SeaWorld Orlando and we had no plans to use any of her music in that show.”
Heart was the latest act in the past week to cancel appearances at SeaWorld Orlando’s Bands, Brew & Barbecue music series in February, making their announcement over the weekend. The series is held over several weekends and features top classic rock and country acts. A posting on Heart’s official Twitter page said the decision was influenced by the recently-released documentary “Blackfish.” The documentary raises questions about the effects of captivity on killer whales at marine parks such as SeaWorld. Nelson and Barenaked Ladies made their decisions after fans launched
Change.org petitions urging them not to perform at SeaWorld. Barenaked Ladies said in a statement provided by their spokeswoman: “We watch movies too, ya know!” “This is a complicated issue, and we don’t claim to understand all of it, but we don’t feel comfortable proceeding with the gig at this time,” the statement said. SeaWorld officials “have been gracious, and extended us invitations to the park to learn more about what they do, and how they do it,” it said. SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck said in a statement that marine park officials respect the performers’
decisions but added that they were disappointed that “a small group of misinformed individuals” was able to influence the performers. “The bands and artists have a standing invitation to visit any of our parks to see firsthand or to speak to any of our animal experts to learn for themselves how we care for animals and how little truth there is to the allegations made by animal extremist groups opposed to the zoological display of marine mammals,” Gollattscheck said. “Blackfish” explores what may have caused Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca, to kill veteran SeaWorld trainer Dawn
Brancheau in 2010. She was killed when Tilikum pulled her into a pool. The orca was also involved in two other deaths. Tilikum was one of three orcas blamed for killing a trainer in 1991 after the woman lost her balance and fell in the pool at Sealand of the Pacific near Victoria, British Columbia. Tilikum was also involved in a 1999 death, when the body of a man who had sneaked by SeaWorld security was found draped over him. The man either jumped, fell or was pulled into the frigid water and died of hypothermia, though he was also bruised and scratched by Tilikum.
