THE HIVE
‘GODZILLA’ GIVES FRANCHISE A GIANT BOOST
Despite any misgivings that the 1998 film version of “Godzilla” may have put in fans heads about Americans handling the franchise, this newest reboot squashes any of those fears. In the capable hands of director Gareth Edwards, this latest film not only makes Godzilla an awesome force of nature again but sends the viewer back to a simpler time when a movie didn’t have to show its monster in the first
15 minutes of the film. Edwards does a masterful job of pacing his film, starting off with the meltdown of a nuclear power plant in Japan and following up with exciting locales such as Hawaii, Las Vegas and San Francisco for some epic monster destruction. The cast is serviceable here, particularly Bryan Cranston and Aaron TaylorJohnson, although some of its fine cast – particularly Elizabeth Olsen and Ken
Watanabe – feel a tad wasted with their minimal screen time. However, this is a giant monster movie, and when it comes to that, “Godzilla” delivers in spades. At a whopping 350 feet, Godzilla is a terrifying screen presence. Hats off to visual effects supervisor Jim Rygiel and his team for some of the best effects I’ve ever seen in a film. The action moves briskly and it’s hard to believe that the film
is 123 minutes long. There’s hardly a dull moment the whole time. With this new creative team at the helm of the “Godzilla” franchise, fans are understandably excited for new entries now. If you’re looking for a great summer blockbuster, look no further than “Godzilla.” You’ll forget you ever saw the ’98 version. Three out of four stars. ALEX KEEL Hutchinson

This file image released by HBO shows Woody Harrelson, left, and Matthew McConaughey from the HBO series “True Detective.” The Associated Press
MCCONAUGHEY, HARRELSON MAKE ‘TRUE DETECTIVE’ AN A-PLUS DRAMA Recently released on DVD, HBO’s “True Detective” is one of the best new shows of the past few years. It follows the exploits of two homicide detectives, Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), in a case that spans from 1995 to 2012. To spoil the plot would be unforgivable with such a gripping
show. Created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, “Detective” is filled with not only a strong story but also well-written, fully developed characters. While McConaughey has received most of the acting praise for the show – and he is in top form here – credit also must go to Harrelson for not only acting as his co-star’s anchor but for
keeping the show grounded from too many long-winded monologues. While he may not have as much dialogue as McConaughey, he conveys so much with his expressions and mannerisms it’s hard to believe his performance has gone somewhat unnoticed. Only spanning eight episodes, the series goes by quickly, but you’ll be left satisfied by the conclusion of the show. One standout scene in particular involves a 7-minute-long take at the end of the fourth episode. It’s a doozy. For those looking for a new show to binge-watch over a long weekend, look no further than “True Detective,” a truly remarkable show. I can’t recommend it enough. Four out of four stars. ryanc@hutchnews.com As the countdown to the Smallville ComicCon approaches its final hours, here’s the scoop on what to expect. Fans of the teenage Superman drama “Smallville” on the CW will recognize Alaina Huffman and Phil Morris. Huffman played Black Canary on the series and Morris portrayed John Jones, a.k.a. the Martian Manhunter. Huffman has appeared in many other film and television roles, most notably as Lt. Tamara Johansen in “Stargate Universe” and Abaddon, the queen of Hell, in “Supernatural.” Morris also has lent his acting and vocal talents to an extensive number of TV, film and video games, including lawyer Jackie Chiles on “Seinfeld” – (“Who told you to put the balm on?”). Michael Coleman has a recurring character in ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” as

Cosplay, a more professional and immersive approach to costuming, also is encouraged. The ComicCon website also lays out some ground rules for interacting with cosplayers, who usually garner a lot of attention: Ask to take a photograph. The majority of those participating in cosplay are more than willing to pose for a photograph and will want your photograph to be the best it can be, so they will want to pose. Don’t sneak photographs while they are eating, adjusting their costumes, or using restroom facilities. Be considerate. Don’t monopolize a cosplayer’s time. Don’t block doors, event aisles, or artist/vendor booths and don’t interfere with events/activities. There are other fans who want to interact or get photographs, even autographs. The cosplayer also wants to enjoy their ComicCon experience as well. Don’t touch. Cosplay is a huge investment. Those fans striving for an accurate representation have invested considerable time and money in their costume and props. Some elements may be fragile, easily break, and even be irreplaceable. Be respectful. Cosplay is not consent. Be polite, accept the responses you are given, and treat those in costume the same as you would any stranger on the street. Respect personal boundaries. Do not permit others to harass a cosplayer. Report inappropriate behavior to Smallville ComicCon staff. A costume contest will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, registration for which can be completed by filling out the form available at

smallvillecomiccon.com/ costume-contest/ and submitting it by 2 p.m. Saturday at the main booth. There are three categories: ages 6 and below, ages 7-15 and ages 16 and up. The 6-and-under category is non-competitive and no registration is required. Commercially produced costumes are welcome. All participants will receive a ribbon. The older divisions will be divided between males and females – based on the participant’s gender, not their character’s. Costumes for these categories must not be commercially mass-produced or rented. A panel of judges will critique participants based on character selection, costume complexity, costume craftsmanship and personal presentation.
Admission Advance ticket sales have ended, but attendees still will be able to pay for admission at the door. A two-day pass is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors ages 60 and over, $10 for children 7-15 and free to kids 6 and under with a paid adult. REVIEW: AMAZON PRIME’S VALUE GOES BEYOND SHIPPING BY ANICK JESDANUN AP Technology Writer
AMHERST, Ohio – Spending $99 a year for an Amazon Prime membership to get free shipping hardly seems like a deal. After all, I can usually get free shipping by spending at least $35 on a single order. But Prime’s benefits became apparent gradually over the nine months I’ve used it. During a trip last month, for instance, I got started on the first season of “The Good Wife” and read Michael Lewis’ “The Blind Side.” Last weekend, I added Journey’s “Greatest Hits” album to my music library and began watching the spy drama “The Americans.” I finished a book on photography on my way to work Monday. All that came for free with Prime. Some features work only with a Kindle e-reader or tablet. If Amazon.com Inc. introduces a new smartphone Wednesday, as widely expected, those features will likely work there, too. Amazon might even introduce additional ones just for its phone. But there’s plenty to enjoy, even without an Amazon device: Unlimited video Since 2006, Amazon has been offering video for download, much like Apple’s iTunes. Although TV episodes cost just $2 or $3 each, I hate paying for something that’s been shown on television for free. Amazon changed the dynamics in 2011 when it started offering movies and TV shows to Prime members for free. Unlike Netflix, Amazon offers only part of its collection that way. Video is available on a variety of devices, but not Google’s Chromecast or smartphones and tablets running Google’s Android system, with the exception of Kindles. As with Netflix, free video has typically been limited to streaming, meaning you need a persistent Internet connection. But last fall, Amazon began enabling downloads on Kindle tablets. That came in handy during my train trip through Ohio and other states last month, when I kept encountering stretches without cellular service and couldn’t watch Netflix. Exclusive video Lately, Amazon has been making exclusive deals to block shows from Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services. Prime is the only way to get free streaming of past seasons of “24” and classic HBO series such as “The Sopranos” and “The Wire.” This summer, Amazon is making episodes of two CBS series, “Under the Dome” and “Extant,” available through Prime just four days after the broadcast. Without Prime, you can still buy some shows digitally or on DVD. CBS is also making its shows available for free, though they will carry ads, while Prime will
not. Amazon also has been getting into original programming, though none of its shows has gotten the critical reception that Netflix has had with “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” After getting customer feedback on 14 shows, Amazon ordered full seasons for two comedies and three kids’ series. So far, people who don’t have Prime aren’t able to buy episodes. E-books You can borrow one book a month as long as you have a Kindle e-reader or tablet, but you’re not offered everything that Amazon makes available for purchase. The selection includes the “Harry Potter” and “Hunger Games” series and several books by best-selling
author Michael Lewis. But once I finished those, I struggled to find books of interest. Each month, Prime members can also choose one of four books to own outright, regardless of whether they own a Kindle device. These books are all published by Amazon. So far, none has interested me enough to get – even for free. Music This is Amazon’s newest benefit, debuting just last week. More than a million songs are available for streaming on Kindle tablets, Web browsers and Amazon’s Music app for Apple and Android devices. In some cases, you can download songs for offline playback. As with books and video, free music is limited to a
portion of what Amazon makes available for sale. Universal Music Group’s catalog is missing, but you do get Grammies winner Daft Punk and plenty of ‘80s
tracks from Journey and Madonna. For kids Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service offers
plenty of kid-friendly apps, books and video for a set monthly price. Prime members still have to pay, but they get a few dollars off the monthly fee.
