KUDOS TO ‘LEGOS,’ BUT NOT TO ‘MONUMENTS’ If you and the 10-and-under kids have cabin fever from our recent bone-chilling cold, “The Lego Movie” that opened this past weekend at the Mall 8 in Hutchinson is a good place to head. It's a clever action- and humorpacked animated film that could wind up among the best of its kind for the young new year. And the emotional ending is definitely worth staying for and worthy of praise. Four stars for this well-written and excellently executed movie, certain to draw you and Legos closer together. The same positive review does not hold true for “The Monuments Men,” which is a fascinating, little-known, worth-telling story that lacks a meaningful script and believable actors and has too much Hollywood embellishment for believability. Too many scenes either fall nicely into place or are corny and predictable. I'm always leery of stars such as George Clooney directing themselves, and this offering firms up my belief that few can successfully pull off both directing and starring. Totally miscast, in my opinion, are both Bill Murray and John Goodman. They

join Clooney, Matt Damon and others as art experts drawn into the ending phases of World War II to save stolen art from France and other war-torn countries before the Germans and Russians either destroy or keep for themselves some of the most valuable and treasured paintings and sculptures of all time. While the basic story of art experts drafted into the Army and given special status to save artifacts is true, the way their story is told in this film is shallow and lacks depth. “Cute but clunky” is how one reviewer described the overall atmosphere of “The

Monuments Men,” which I can grant only two and a half stars. This film may allow you to leave feeling good about what the actual monuments men accomplished but knowing deep inside that you haven’t seen anything close to a well-done, award-deserving picture. DAN DEMING Hutchinson

LAUGH AT ‘WITCHES’ WHILE IN GUILD’S BRAND NEW DIGS BY KRISTEN RODERICK For The Bee kroderick@hutchnews.com Be a part of the Hutchinson Theatre Guild’s first performance in its new home with “The Kitchen Witches.” Caroline Smith’s awardwinning comedy won the 2005 Samuel French Canadian Playwriting award. Guild actors Melanie Twineham and Peggy Livingston play Dolly Biddle and Isobel Lomax, soon-tobe-ex cable access cooking hosts who have hated each other since one stole the other’s love away more than 30 years ago, according to a release. They both face the demise of their cooking shows, so they join forces in a show that rivals Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer combined. In the midst of it, Dolly’s son, played by Matt Christian, tries to keep the feuding hosts from killing each other. Blaine Teter plays Rob the camera man. The performance is presented with a special arrangement by Samuel French. Charles Johnston, the guild’s production coordinator, will direct all 2014 shows. “The Kitchen Witches” will take place on two week-

‘WIZARD’ LOOKS TO WOW WITH BIG CAST, EFFECTS ■ Classic story – running through Sunday – brought to life with a cast of 175.

BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee ryanc@hutchnews.com If three’s a crowd, what’s one to make of 175? Rest assured, there shouldn’t be any dysfunction when all of those Munchkins, monkeys and Winkies come together this weekend when the Family Community Theatre continues its 25th season with its production of “The Wizard of Oz” at Memorial Hall. Gargantuan casts are nothing new for the local group’s annual winter musical: Last year’s “The Music Man” had 125; there were more than 200 for 2012’s “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”; and “Willy Wonka” in 2011 nearly reached the 200 mark. But, as was the case with all of those shows, the direction of “Oz” is in the capable hands of local stage veteran Craig Williams. “Yes, it is large,” Williams admitted of the size of the cast, “but we think it will give everybody involved in that a significant contribution to the show.” In total, about 250 people auditioned for the show. After trimming down to the more manageable 175, the final cast features actors from 140 regional families – hailing from Arlington, Buhler, Haven, Hutchinson, Little River, Lyons, Nickerson, Pretty Prairie, South Hutchinson and Sterling – who range in age from 5 to “much older,” as stated in the show’s media packet. In short, it’s the ideal makeup for an organization that strives to utilize and appeal to local families by offering wholesome entertainment. As is typically the case, the largest hurdle in preparing for the performances has been managing the organization of everyone involved. “It’s a challenge at any time to put 78 Munchkins on stage – to have them dance, to get them coordinated, to get them off,” Williams said. And even more characters are on stage together during other sequences, he added. But one of the keys to overcoming such challenges, Williams said, is to bring together a talented pool of assistants. For “Oz,” Williams is receiving directorial assistance from Mary Kay Dechant, another longtime FCT contributor. The show also features choreography by Piper Harding; music direction by Ben Jones, who has assembled a pit orchestra of musicians from across the area; costuming by Nathan and JoLyn Geuy; publicity by Dechant, Danny Mason and Shannan Miller; makeup by Janice Hoppes; set construction by Rob Garrett; art direction by Ann Franz; props organized by Shannon McPike and Jill Garrett; and ticketing and house supervision by Janice Woods. “They all have good experience working with kids, working with adults, work-

ing with theater,” Williams said. The show also is receiving outside assistance from Las Vegas-based theatrical flying service Flying By Foy, as well as professional makeup artist Lacey Bailey of Derby, who will work on the six main characters – Dorothy (Taylor Smith), Hickory/Tin Woodsman (Eric Smith), Hunk/Scarecrow (Randy Lind), Zeke/Cowardly Lion (Lynn Hase), Aunt Em/Glinda (Sarah Berblinger) and Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West (Betsy Geddes) – and help illustrate their transformation from earthy Kansas residents to elaborate inhabitants of Oz. Other notable roles include Uncle Henry (Mark Zimmerman) and Professor Marvel/the Wizard of Oz (Nathan Geuy). “These kinds of things will add to the spectacular effects of the show itself,” Williams said of the flight and makeup aspects of the production. “We believe what they bring to the show will be another highlight of the 25th season.” It also helps that the story by L. Frank Baum has grown into one of the most iconic pieces of American fiction of all time. Because nearly every member of the cast is familiar with the plot, most had a good grasp of their characters and where they fit within the overall arc of the story. That allowed for more time than usual to be devoted to perfecting the performances and less time explaining intricate details of the story. While there are several theatrical adaptations, FCT has always made use of the version by the Royal Shakespeare Company, which Williams describes as the closest to the classic 1939 movie starring Judy Garland. “It really gives people what they’re looking for,” he said. “This show being so iconic, people are coming to see the story that they know.”
