PARK QUEST TO PROVIDE SUMMER EXPLORATION

Now through Aug. 30, Reno County residents and visitors are invited to participate in Park Quest, a free community exploration event offered by K-State Research & Extension. This is the third year for the event, which encourages teams to visit and explore area parks and document their progress in a Park Quest Passport booklet that will earn teams entry into a drawing for outdoor-themed prizes at the finale party on Aug. 30. Teams must be made up of a family unit that consists of at least one adult and
one minor 16 years old or younger. Registration is available online at http:// renoparkquest.eventbrite. com, by calling (620) 662-2371 or by visiting the Reno County Extension Office at 2 W. 10th Ave. in South Hutchinson. Participating parks can be found in Abbyville, Arlington, Buhler,

‘CAUSE’ CONCERT SERIES RETURNS WITH A BANG Concerts for the Cause kicked off a preview to its summer season this past Saturday with a “School’s Out” all-day music festival at The Rusty Needle. The event benefited the Sexual Assault/ Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson. Held under a big tent in the parking lot of The Rusty Needle, the afternoon session was a family-friendly, all-ages show that featured Fraktured Black and Hutchinson’s own Earth to Matilda, Staynlis and The Brian Davis Band, which rounded out the afternoon’s entertainment. Beginning at 2 p.m., Fraktured Black opened the show, and halfway through their set they did their version of a Kurt Cobain hit,
“Heart Shaped Box,” which was superb. Earth To Matilda brought their fan base with them and played a couple of original tunes that I loved. Front man Conner Eaves sang the song “Love is Like a Slasher Film,” which he wrote with a friend of his, and the band previewed a new song that the band had written together with their newest band mate, titled “127.” Staynlis sang a couple of songs from their newest CD, which I thought were outstanding: The tracks were “Alive” and” Pieces.” The Brian Davis Band rounded out the afternoon session with a couple of new experimental tracks that haven’t made it to CD yet: “Overcome” and “Imagine.” I can’t wait until they get those tracks recorded. The new CD is going to be incredible. Each band played a 45-minute set, and it was hard to believe that it was 5 p.m. and the afternoon’s entertainment had come to an end. After a 45-minute break to change out for the evening’s adult entertainment, the festival started up again with a different set of musical groups. The evening began with Perpetual Fist, then transitioned into Apathy Syndrome from Des Moines, Iowa, and Hutchinson’s own Victims of Spotlight (VOS) and Reign in Peril. Rounding out the evening was Hemlock from Las Vegas, Nevada. At 6 p.m. the music took on an edgier turn with Perpetual Fist, who halfway through their set did a cover of “Bad Girlfriend,” and they gave it their own spin. Apathy Syndrome had
to be one of the most unusual bands to ever play in Hutchinson. They made a six-hour drive to get to the festival and brought their fans on a bus with them. They had costumes and put on an unusual show for the audience. Check out the CFTC website for photos of the band. Just seeing this group alone was worth the price of admission. Victims of Spotlight (a.k.a. VOS) is one of my favorites, and I couldn’t wait until they took the stage. These guys have such a stage presence, and the last two shows that I’ve seen them at, they’ve done their version of “The Twilight Zone” and had the entire audience on their feet. Reign in Peril played their final show as a group, and it was bittersweet. The crowd couldn’t get enough and even asked for an encore. Hemlock rounded out the evening, and the crowd energy went up 110 percent. Everyone was on their feet and dancing to the beat. There is a rumor that Hemlock will be back during the state fair and will play at The Rusty Needle again. It was a great day for an outdoor festival, and the live music was incredible. Crowdgoers could be heard after the show exclaiming that this was one of the best shows they’d been to in a long time. Many of these bands will be playing Concerts for the Cause during the summer season, so check out the website for more information and to see photos of Saturday’s event.

‘TARZAN’ SWINGS ONTO FLAG THEATRE STAGE BY RYAN CHRISTNER For The Bee
ryanc@hutchnews.com Tarzan may be king of the jungle, but on stage, as the Family Commuity Theatre presents the Broadway musical based on the 1999 Disney animated film of the same name, it’s the entire cast and supporting ensemble that reign supreme. More than 30 predominantly school-aged actors appear in “Tarzan,” providing a burst of youthful exuberance throughout the show’s 20-plus musical numbers, which include familiar songs from the movie and more by singer Phil Collins. “Obviously, the classics from the film, ‘Trashin’ the Camp,’ ‘Two Worlds,’ ‘Strangers Like Me,’ they’re all in there,” said director Lisa Sack. “A lot of these newer ones that are coming out are rapidly becoming my favorite. They’re catchy and in your head all the time.” Also included, of course, is the touching “You’ll Be in My Heart,” which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Sack has managed to assemble a very musically talented cast, partly by luck, she admitted, and partly by design. For example, Sack said some recruiting through local music departments had to be done to fill the part of the grown ape Terk – played by Hutchinson High School sophomore Trevor Sullivan – due to the high range of his parts. Other cast members, like Maggie Kovach, who plays Jane, have grown into their roles and add to the strength of the show’s performances. “She’s really, I think, just come far in bringing that character to life,” Sack said of Kovach. The rest of the show is brought to life through the set – thickly covered in a mix of real and artificial foliage – and costumes, which Sack promised won’t consist of the typical monkey suits. Inspired by the vividness seen in another Disney show on Broadway, “The Lion King,” Sack said the cast of “Tarzan” will be dressed in bright colors and “traditional African garb” with accompanying makeup that features “tribal” themes. “That’s really what we were going for, was more of a bright feel,” Sack said.
