HUTCH AUTHOR PUBLISHES 1ST NOVEL BY ADAM STEWART For The Bee

astewart@hutchnews.com Reading a dedication in the front of a book prompted a Hutchinson writer to spend 22 months writing and publishing her own first novel. Erin Willis released “Battle for the Throne” in late August. She said she was inspired to write a novel after seeing C.S. Lewis’ dedication to his goddaughter in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” deciding to write for her nephew Matthew and niece Lauren. She initially figured they would be the only ones to see her writing, but she became engrossed in writing, spending 20 to 40 hours on it most weeks on top of a full-time job. “It’s how I relaxed,” she said. “That was my downtime. I absolutely love writing. I can’t imagine not doing it now.” Willis, who published the novel as E.J. Willis, finished her first draft in December 2013, but she was unsatisfied with the result, scrapped it and

started over in May 2014. “I learned a lot more about what it takes to write a good novel, so it was worth it,” she said. Willis said she is inspired by authors including Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Peretti and Brandon Mull. She describes “Battle for the Throne” as a young adult fantasy novel, targeted for readers 12 to 18 years old. With that in mind, she wrote it without obscene language or explicit scenes. It does include some violent scenes, but she said they aren’t graphic. The theme of the novel is about persevering, overcoming obstacles and standing strong in the face of adversity. After finishing writing and editing her novel, Willis stepped into another arena that was new to her: publishing. Willis self-published her book with some help from her parents, printing it in small batches. It is also available as an e-book for Kindle and Kindle Unlimited. “I’ve had a lot of people say they’re having a hard time putting it down,” she said.

Willis is trying to spread the word about her book and get it in local bookstores. She said the Hutchinson Public Library, where she works, will have a copy soon. “The library has been very supportive of me,” she said. Willis is still waiting to get a copy of the novel to her nephew, and she decided her niece is probably a bit too young for it still. She commissioned artist Steven J. Catizone to design the cover. Willis tried her hand at that staple of fantasy books, a fictional map, but decided to go without one for the time being. “I made a few attempts to draw a map, but it just came out as a few squiggly lines,” she said. She will have a couple more chances to include maps of her fantasy world. “Battle for the Throne” is the first book in a planned trilogy. Willis is about halfway done writing the first draft of her follow-up, tentatively titled “Into the Wildlands.” She hopes to publish it in summer 2016.
